    Nice job! My layout and display shelves are in Idaho where the odd earthquake is possible. So I cut 3 inch 48 inch long strips of 1/8 inch pelxiglass and mounted them to the front of the shelves and sleep much better that way. Cutting wheel grooves was hard enough with a good table saw and can make fitting the trains difficult. I like your idea of old track and would use that if I had to do it again. Love your videos.

      Thanks. I like the idea of plexiglass. I might even have some in the garage somewhere. I’ll have to look.
      Thankfully I do t have to deal with earthquakes, I mean we might get one very rarely but they are tiny, but who know. Better to be safe.

      Thanks! Yeah apartment living and shelving can be an issue. I built a similar shelf when I was in an apartment but the sides went down to the floor to support the weight and I used a thin board on the back to add strength. Worked out pretty well with minimum damage to the wall, just a couple screw holes.

    This was a great project. I want to do the same, but my layout is in the livingroom, and I am concerned about damage to the walls. But the main consideration is the weight of my DMIR (Georgeous Locomotive) and the possibility of a flood from a hurricane. Yes we are in Florida. I pack up everything and store as high as possible, and then worry about moisture damage. Need to go north.

    • @dagryffynhobby
      @dagryffynhobby  Год назад

      There are options that do less damage to the wall, if I were to do one where I cared about the wall, I would construct a shelf with a backing that is structurally strong enough and then hang it from a single board that is attached to the wall into the beams. Then there would o to be a few holes to fill when taken down.

    Thanks for sharing what you decided in making shelves. Making it as economical as possible with good insites was pleasing to see. Having shelves is a must in this hobby. I can enjoy mind being on the shelf without putting them on the layout. What you did looks great. I share your concern about them falling off the self. Maybe stretching a rope across on each end of the wall would give you a peace of mind. Use of hooks to hook each of the end of rope across the cars would solve the problem. Fun watching you enjoy your lay out.

    Super job Dave. And lots of flat paint hides wood imperfections and gives a great background. You now have a wall of lionel mpc era abstract art. Its beautiful.
    Have you looked at really cheap shelves from shipping pallets? Their the perfect width for reused 027 track.
    For more storage ideas you could build a wooden garden gate shelf infront of the wall shelf that swings out.

    • @dagryffynhobby

    Hey Dave,
    Nice job on the shelves! I have a similar rack of shelves and I've found that alternating the direction of every other train looks really cool. In other words, one faces left, one right, the next left, etc.
    If you get lots of visitors, buy an inexpensive label maker and identify each train so they can look and admire at their own pace and then they don't have to ask what everything is. Plus, I think it looks great and very organized. If you use two-sided tape, you can easily remove or re-position the labels as needed.
    Keep us informed on what you're doing. It's been fun to watch the progress.

    Man, I know how you feel about needing more shelving in the train room. I have two walls and the front of one side of my layout covered in Glen Snyder Shelving and can’t get more because of them being unable to get materials for some time to come. Looked into other options but not near the same. I am like you and most of us, too many trains and cars, too few shelving areas. I have shelves full in the train work room that eventually I’ll be able to store boxes under the layout and cover with some type of material. That will free up my shelves in the work room for scenic modeling and buildings and cars without boxes. I will say you did a very nice job on that wall…excellent presentation. Also I have my Williams set of the Southern Pacific on display! 😂 Have a great week and chill wit the projects. They will still be there next week.
    Best-
    Tim

    I wouldn't both putting track on the shelves, I started with that approach on my shelves and it just got frustrating to put the trains in the track each time I rotated cars. I just put them on the raw wood now and I have no issues with them falling off.

    • @wayneantoniazzi2706
      @wayneantoniazzi2706 Год назад +1

      It's user's choice really. I put tracks on my shelves since I didn't want the wheels sitting on unfinished wood with possible corrosion problems resulting. Since the plain wood looks fine to me I didn't bother painting or varnishing it.

    • @dagryffynhobby
      @dagryffynhobby  Год назад +1

      @@dagryffynhobby the only thing I have noticed after a while of putting the cars directly on the wood is sometimes there is some grease / oil marks on the wood, especially from the engines. I guess track would help prevent that?

    • @dagryffynhobby

    Dave, the shelves look fantastic! Oh yeah, putting up shelves and then putting the trains on 'em opens up a whole new world for you. It gives a train room a cozy hobby shop ambiance and I guarantee you you'll get a rush every time you go out to the garage and see the treasures on the walls. I sure do whenever I go out to my "Chugger Barn!"
    If the wood's a little rough that's OK, the white paint covers a lot of imperfections and as the saying goes "The best is the enemy of the good enough!" And I'd put some track on the shelves just to keep the trains aligned and a bit more secure. There's plenty of old 027 and 031 trackage around you can use and of course there's no rush.
    One MINOR thing, I'd put the Blue Comet up on top. A little Jersey Pride ya know?
    And I'm OH so jealous of that Public Service first aid box!
    Great show! Thanks for posting!

    ah that really looks great ! now you surely have more trains to put on some shelves. Would it be possible to put a thin wall on hinges, in front of you shelves, Say like two long doors. Put new shelves on these doors and voila you could double your space for trains. Open the doors and you will see these trains and close the new doors and you could fill them with some trains that still are in their boxes ... what do you think about that ? 😍 thanks for a very inspiring video !

    Dave, did you ever post a video explaining what the space is you used for your layout? It sounds like it is part of a garage because of the cold comments you occasionally make. You do a great job when you share your time with the trains. Thank you.

      Thank you!
      I’ve probably mentioned it over time but never specifically outlined the space.
      It’s essentially a four car detached garage. I have the train room and then two garage bays on the other side of the wall. Concrete block, old cracking floor, roof disintegrating, but I do the best I can. I’m just thankful to have the space!

    You do realize that the displayed stuff & shelf needs to be cleaned and dusted from time to time. Your magna traction engines should be placed on sections of track. So your plan to set them on tracks is a good one.

    • @wayneantoniazzi2706
      @wayneantoniazzi2706 Год назад

      I only dust mine when I take them off the shelves to run them. Since I rotate trains on a fairly regular basis and I don't have much of a dust problem anyway it's never gotten bad enough to worry about.
      Dust is only a problem if the trains sit on shelves unused for months or years.

    I see you don't have any Berkshires or Northern steam engines, or a U36B
    Not knowing were you door handle is be aware of it hitting a train on the shelf, maybe that is where you placed that first aid kit for that reason.
    OK in the end you showed us where your logo came from, you borrowed one..
    I'm sure you know this but you need that shelf supported directly into the wood at some spots or cement block wall. If mounted just into the dry wall, that will crack in time or from weight and you will have a disappointing mess.

    • @dagryffynhobby
      @dagryffynhobby  Год назад +1

      I wanted this shelf for my MPC sets mostly. My postwar Berk is in a safer spot.
      No worries about the fort handle, the door doesn’t open far enough, the floor is far from level and it bottoms out before hitting the shelf.
      The shelf is screwed and glued together. Supports are screwed to the beams and to the shelves. It’s pretty solid. Thanks!
