I googled "how to red guard a shower bench" I'd never heard of the stuff before. I'm a plumber but I'm tackling a renovation remodel of my garage at home adding a bathroom with stand up shower. Your video was the first to come up on Google. And I found it helpful.
Correct installation of any cement board is to use thin spacer as you set the lowest panel so that it doesn’t sit on edge of bathtub flange. Needs a caulkable space; Durock says 1/4” although 1/8 is probably enough
Thanks for the video. Did you have to do any dilution of the red guard before applying to cement board to ensure it adhered well? I had an issue with red guard peeling off the cement board.
Hi Jason, Interesting, I don’t think diluting the red guard is required, weird that it’s not adhering probably. All I could advise is double checking the manufactures recommendations. Couple things come to mind, has it had enough time to dry, is the cement board porous enough, is there any settling of the red guard or maybe it’s been frozen and has separated a bit, which might hinder it adhering properly. Hope you’re able to figure it out! Good luck
Forgot to Redgard prime (4 water to 1 Redgard), Redgard fabric over all screws/changes of plane, and two final coats perpendicular to each other. Hope this is in the basement ;)
So because you used mesh tape and thinset in the seams, you don't need to use the redgard felt tape? I was planning not to use thinset and mesh tape, but to just caulk the seams, followed by redgard felt tape with redgard.
Ya you could totally go that direction! I wasn’t able to with this job as it was during Covid and material was hard to come by where I lived. So went old Fashion with the thinset and mesh aluminum tape
I found it was almost enough, depends on how porous your cement board in, mine was quite porous so it sucked in the first coat of red guard quite a bit

Hey thanks for mentioning that, I’m new to the RUclips world so it’s interesting to see how the videos circulate!
Good luck with the home project!

👍🏾...glad I ran across this video. You make it look so easy spreading the thin set in the corner.
Thanks! Ya it takes a bit of practice, but eventually you find the groove
@@zackcraftedcan the shower be the most downstream
You don't tape it with the red guard tape?

I read somewhere (might have been the manual) that if you can read the markings on your backer board through the redgard, it's not on thick enough.

@@zackcrafted Thanks! I haven't seen a lot of videos regarding the use of felt tape. It is so damned expensive.
Idont know why some people use felt paper under wonder boards
How long did you wait to apply redguard after applying the thinset?
I waited until the next day, I believe the thinset was a 6 cure time. But double check the manufacturers recommendations, Good luck!
Gasket is such a nice word
Does what side of the cement board is showing matter?
One side is smooth, one side in rough. The smooth side works best with mastic and the rough side with mortar.
How much of the bucket did it take to do the two coats
I found it was almost enough, depends on how porous your cement board in, mine was quite porous so it sucked in the first coat of red guard quite a bit
What thinset did you use
I use a modified thinset, Schluter all-set usally covers most substrates/tiles
Why did you not mesh the edge of the shower where the durock meets the drywall?
I figured those two products would move to drastically from one another and that my tile trim piece would cover it, but I could have!
Forgot insulation on walls, not smart
Ah good idea! Did insulate under the tub, wasn’t to worried about the walls just because of where the shower is located in the house
You only need insulation on outer walls, genius.
