How should Muslims Respond to Blasphemy? | Dr. Shabir Ally

  • A couple of weeks ago, a #French teacher showed Charlie Hebdo cartoons mocking the #Prophet #Muhammad to his students as part of a lesson on freedom of expression. A few days later, he was killed. A viewer asked, “Why are Muslims so obsessed with blasphemy of their Prophet to the extreme that they can be instantly radicalized and moved to violence and bloodshed?” Dr. Shabir Ally and Dr. Safiyyah Ally discuss how Western liberal democracies don’t prioritize laws against #blasphemy. Dr. Shabir explains that classical interpretations of Islam make it a crime to criticize religion, but this is contrary to the way blasphemy is treated in the #Quran, where the #blasphemer has the freedom to blaspheme. The Quran doesn’t say that the blasphemer should be penalized in this life. Instead, the Quran repeats the insults and engages with them and correcting them. The violent person, Dr. Shabir explains, misrepresents the Prophet Muhammad and Islam.

@The Truth Exactly! Collectively, the Muslims have double standards! I'm a Muslim myself, but I'll admit to this fact. When something bad is done to them, they cry it's oppression, but when they themselves do it to someone else then it's their right! Allah hates the hypocrites!

Dear Brother, I would not say that his answer is honest. But it is persuasive. It is meant for Western Muslims and Christians. Notice that he does not say that these practices need to change in Pakistan, where they occur almost every day.
Those violent follow the Qur'an more strictly (5:33 & 33:57) as well as the required hadiths.
Really, to be a sincere Muslim all branches require that you follow abrogation of the Qur'an and the hadith of their sect.

    Moral :
    1. NO MUSLIM HAS THE RIGHT TO TAKE MATTERS IN HIS OWN HANDS.
    2. ALLAH SHALL TAKE CARE OF IT IN THE AFTERLIFE BY HIMSELF AND DOESN'T NEED ANY MUSLIM BELIEVER TO TAKE ACTION AGAINST IT IN THE NAME OF ALLAH OR AS HIS REPRESENTATIVE.
    3. TO BELIEVE OR DISBELIEVE IS A CHOICE, NOT PENALIZED. A FREE CHOICE. NOT PUNISHABLE.
    4. ISLAM IS PEACE. PEACE COMES WITH TOLERANCE. VIOLENCE IS OPPOSITE OF PEACE. INTOLERANCE IS NOT ACCEPTABLE BY ALLAH, AND MAKES THE PROPHET AND THE TEACHINGS OF ISLAM LOOK BAD.
    5. EVERYONE THINKS HIS GOD IS THE REAL GOD AND OBJECTS AND REJECTS THE OTHER GOD, CRITIQUES THE OTHER GOD / RELIGION. THIS IS SAME FOR EVERY RELIGION. SO YOUR BELIEFS CAN BE BLASPHEMY FOR THE OTHER RELIGION AND VICE A VERSA.
    6. KILLING ANOTHER MAN IS NEVER ACCEPTABLE. LET THE GOD TAKE CARE OF IT IN THE AFTER LIFE, LET THE MAN LIVE AS AND HOW HE WANTS TO LIVE.

@Muhammad Osama so very decent of you to quote 2:190... but do you honestly think that "those who wage war against you" is somehow the same as "someone who insult you?"
furthermore, do you understand what is a "transgressor?" or the Arabic الْمُعْتَدِينَ
the root word "Ayn-Dal-Waw" also denotes something that is wickedly, unjustly, spitefully, wrongfully. now, with this in mind, you will be able to understand the meaning of this verse and why :
4:140 He has revealed to you in the Book that when you hear God's revelations being rejected, or ridiculed, do not sit with them until they engage in some other subject. Otherwise, you would be like them. God will gather the hypocrites and the disbelievers, into Hell, altogether.
as a human... the only reason one reacts violently towards an insult is because your ego/pride has been hurt/dented. hence, the tendency to react "wickedly, unjustly, spitefully, wrongfully." and, we all know where all that hatred/aggression/violence stems from, right? the devil will be shouting "victory" all day long when humans follow their "vain desires!"
perhaps, the greatest travesty of all is when one tries to justify protecting his own pride/ego to some "divine order!"
      peace.

Secularism in Sweden (where I live) means that the state does NOT consider any religion, worldview, or ideology holy. As a consequence rediculing or criticizing Islam is no difference than doing it to christianity, atheism, liberalism, or conservatism or indeed any other idea. All are equally open to criticism. Further, in the political discourse, arguments must be secular and/or based on voting meaning you cant use religious texts or religious dogma as an authority for political decisions. Religious people can of course be part of politics, and let their faith decide their political stance, but their arguments must be secular and not religious.

He is walking a very thin and dangerous line, where he could easily be denounced for blasphemy himself and killed if he’s not careful. That said, he cannot be totally honest and still pursue his mission. Eg.the peaceful Koran versus he quoted were all abrogated by later violent verses. And in general hadiths are commanded to be adhere to in the Quran, where it says to honor the teachings of Mohamed and his companions, whose words are recorded where? That’s right, in the hadiths. Even the requirement to pray five times per day comes from the hadiths, so to dismiss them en mas is blasphemy. Unless, of course, he's just practicing takiya...

I have great respect for Shabir Ali. However, I don’t think he is being intellectually honest when he says the Quran doesn’t support punishment for blasphemers. Does the Quran say, or does it not say….?
Indeed, those who reject the message after their belief and then increase in disbelief - never will their [claimed] repentance be accepted, and they are the ones astray (Quran, 3:90).
Indeed, the penalty for those who wage war against Allah and His Messenger and strive upon earth [to cause] corruption is none but that they be killed or crucified or that their hands and feet be cut off from opposite sides or that they be exiled from the land. That is for them a disgrace in this world; and for them in the Hereafter is a great punishment (Quran, 5:33).
O you who have believed, do not take your fathers or your brothers as allies if they have preferred disbelief over belief. And whoever does so among you - then it is those who are the wrongdoers (Quran, 9:23).
Fight those who believe not in Allah nor the Last Day, nor hold that forbidden which hath been forbidden by Allah and His Messenger, nor acknowledge the religion of Truth, (even if they are) of the People of the Book, until they pay the Jizya with willing submission, and feel themselves subdued (Quran, 9:29).
Make ye no excuses: ye have rejected Faith after ye had accepted it. If We pardon some of you, We will punish others amongst you, for that they are in sin (Quran, 9:66).
He who disbelieves in Allah after his having believed, not he who is compelled while his heart is at rest on account of faith, but he who opens (his) breast to disbelief-- on these is the wrath of Allah, and they shall have a grievous chastisement (Quran, 16:106).
Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah ; and those with him are forceful against the disbelievers, merciful among themselves (Quran, 48:29).

My observation is this. Where Muslims are in the minority i.e. in a western or non Muslim country they speak the way these two have spoken and teach a more peaceful Islam. (I’m guessing they live in the US).
But try teaching that interpretation in a Muslim country .... It would be a very different story then. There is no “let those who believe do so and those who do not have the freedom not to”. No - if you leave Islam in those countries there is a strong chance your head will leave your body.

"Shocking and Unexpected" are the words repeated in this commentary for violence against blasphemers in Europe; not "wrong " or "evil."
I like that Dr. Shabir's interpretation states violence misrepresents Islam. He seems to be following the Qur'an only trend often presented to unbelievers in the West. But how can he say this in the light of the sahih hadith being required for being Sunni or Shiite? Or an interpretation of "Surely those who offend Allah and His Messenger are condemned by Allah in this world and the Hereafter. And He has prepared for them a humiliating punishment." Quran 33:57
Devout students of Islam know that the tolerant verses in the Qur'an have all been abrogated by trusted scholars of all branches of Islam (Qur'an, al Baqarah 2:106).
Dear Brother Shabir, please convince the Muslim authorities, like al Azhar, and the powers of Pakistan and other Muslim nations that they should stop killing people for blasphemy.
Dear Muslims, please see the truth - that Islam is not a religion of peace. Follow the Prince of Peace, Isa al Mesih - Jesus Christ. Read his words in the Injeel. He will bring you peace with ALLAH peace in your HEART and peace with OTHERS.

You should never judge whether a certain people practise their religion the way Muslims do. I say this because only God knows the heart of each soul. The most faithful will be known when your faith is tested.

Could someone explain why every time prophet’s name is mentioned the Muslims say “please be upon him?”
How is this going to benefit or be of “respect” by saying PBUH 1,400 years after he passed away?

  • @estherniqab8324
    @estherniqab8324 3 года назад

In Christianity Jesus said give honor unto honor is due. That means we should not blasphemy anything of God, yet we should realize that when a Muslim speaks of Mohammad (PBUH) they may blasphemy Jesus in the manner in which they speak or write. Therefor such a statement should ne overlooked, just as when a Christian speaks or writes of Jesus it may do likewise to Islam and they should do the same. It is one thing for one religion to contradict another but something totally different to speak in a manner which belittles or mocks another religion. I enjoy your manner of speaking even though some things do blasphemy Christianity but I overlook that because of the sincerity of your teaching. That sincerity shows no aggravated desire to blasphemy but to teach your faith in a sincere manner. May God bless.

    • @estherniqab8324
      @estherniqab8324 3 года назад

We should teach what we believe in a humble manner with no contempt to another religion, and if such causes an unintended blasphemy it should be overlooked. But blasphemy done maliciously is another story. In Christianity we forgive both but I personally can understand a sincerity for God that would anger a Muslim to act. I enjoy your videos. May God bless.

“Whoever wants, let them believe. Whoever wants, let them disbelieve.” (Quran 18:29).
“There’s no coercion in religion.” (Quran 2:256). “Do not insult those (gods) they invoke other than Allah; lest they insult Allah in enmity without knowledge.” (Quran 6:108)
The Quran gives a non-Muslim person freedom to choose Islam or stay on their religion. No one can be forced to convert to Islam. They will be responsible in front of God on the Day of Judgment for not choosing Islam, the religion of truth.
HOWEVER, this freedom to choose Islam was never understood to mean that a person is free to commit treason, sedition, hate speech (blasphemy), or desecrate or insult the sacred. No one has the right to insult any religion and gods.
What one does inside their homes is their own business. It may or may not negatively impact public health and safety, but, in general, it is between them and God. Publicly, however, no religion, god, prophet, or anything sacred should ever be publicly insulted, derided, or mocked. Any morally upright human being would avoid such behavior.
The Quran forbids Muslims from insulting other people’s false gods (Quran 6:108).
This does not mean we’re not allowed to disagree or express opinions based on logic and facts. This does not mean we Muslims are not open to academic challenges. Respectful disagreements are always welcomed in Islam. In fact, the books of theology and law are full of academic debates where the scholars disagree with each other on details. The more knowledgeable I became as I studied classical theology and Islamic legal theory, the more tolerant I became of other scholars’ principled opinions.
Historically, apostacy meant treason. And treason meant apostacy. Committing apostacy meant committing treason. Committing treason meant committing apostacy. As such, both were punishable by death. When a person left Islam historically, they almost always joined the enemy. Hence, the treason that results in death penalty.

Muslims being the follower of Prophet Muhammad need to behave the way the beloved Prophet would have done. He forgave his critics at large and went to war when it was necessary. All great did the same. Rama and Krishna who happen to be holiest figures in Hinduism did the same. On the other hand we all should respect the Prophet for his stature and wisdom. And derogatory cartoons of the Prophet or any great men is by and large wrong. May sense and peace prevail....Ameen...😊

Kudos. Surprising and refreshing honesty in this video. The biggest challenge is the Sunnah, especially sahih hadiths like the following:
Sahih Bukhari (59:369) - This recounts the murder of Ka'b bin al-Ashraf, a Jewish poet who wrote verses about Muslims that Muhammad found insulting. He asked his followers, 'Who will rid me of this man?' and several volunteered. al-Ashraf was stabbed to death while fighting for his life.
Sahih Muslim (1801) - "The Messenger of Allah said: Who will kill Ka'b b. Ashraf? He has maligned Allah, the Exalted, and His Messenger"

@Fuzail Ahmed There are alot of even worse Hadiths that tend to "describe" the doings of our beloving prophet Muhammad. We were given an example of Jesus and how people made from him his own religion and own history. Now Muslims are doing the same by following hadith and not what God has send down to us.

All branches of Islam require that you must accept their authentic hadiths in order to be Muslim. Qur'an only is not a valid option. Besides, the branches of Islam have abrogated up to 2/3 of the Qur'an - everything peaceful. Strict Muslims know all of this.
