love it, I've been a dumpster diver for years. rescuing items is fun and I feel good for keeping stuff out of landfills. my husband Hates it. but i always turn around for great items in the side of the road. I had a beautiful bookshelf for years that I picked up that way and when my tastes changed I sold it for 50
There may be newer 'nuisance' ordanances in some places, but it used to be that once someone threw something away it was fair game, so to speak. Any town or area should thank people who take things out of the waste stream as it saves tax money, saves the town/city/county money, and saves the environment. Dumpster divers are heros in disguise.
razztazz It should be illegal to trash useable items and not donate like they do in England and France!! Huge fines!! Can’t wait till they start fining Walmart and Costco for causing global warming from rotting foods in landfills creating methane gases!! It’s already in the works to target these large chains for the amount of trash they create!!!! Can’t wait till they have to donate it all !!
Minimizing land fill! What I love best about reselling. What a crazy world we live in. I want to try this but I think it's illegal here and they often destroy products before disposal - spray paint etc. I'll never forget that image of a massive pile of Elmo plush toys with paint slopped on them to make them undesirable. What a revolting world we live in. One good thing about resellers is that they actually return value to items and give them a life and purpose. Ultimate recyclers!!
CatDreaming InTheSun I’ve heard of ppl going into the stores that destroy useable items and destroy new items out of revenge. Like drop a $200 coffee machine, or pour coffee on a $300 comforter. It’s negative and bad karma not to donate or think of others rather to destroy and fill our landfills. That’s why I can’t wait till these stores get huge fines for destroying useable items like they do in England and France and not donating them!! Can’t wait till Walmart is slapped with tens of thousands of fines and Costco too!! If u only knew what they toss out. Imagine one long, high dumpster filled to the brim with perfectly new clothes!! You won’t see that cause it’s in the compactor, but when fines are legislated, the compactors will be the first places they will check if items were destroyed and tossed out. I can’t wait till this is enforced!! They will all have to donate with a smile! Or put those items on sale...
I truly respect this guy.. By his accent I can tell he's an immigrant. And it's people like him and my own parents that are willing to do anything to have the american dream. Us natural born American are sometimes too blind to see the opportunities that those from other countries see in our home land.
I worked at Staples and Office Depot. A lot of the time we throw a lot of our recycled computers/laptops away. We are supposed to send them out to places to get them recycled. A few things we also get rid of are dummy models of electronics, which are used for display.
GREAT video!!!!!! i dumpster dive everyday!!! Last year I made $15,000 from dumpster diving. This years i am close to $20,000 right now!!! so doing good for something as little as trash picking. Good video man. i love finding free bubble wrap and shipping material also!!
+Dumpster Marcus Do you have some advice for a new diver ? never been diving yet. are there best times to go, do you get stopped by security etc, and if so what do you say / do, etc. etc. Any tips from either of you would be appreciated. Thanks
+Qinq Teaph Hello Qinq Teaph. Umm well i have been diving for 4 years now and its all up to you when to go. I go at night when the store is closed bc thats the best time for me to go. any day is good also. stores throw away thing daily!! and with police you need to check you TOWN laws. IEach towns laws are diffrent. but my police dont really care abiut it as long as you clean about it. like dont throw the trash on the ground and not pick it up. just go behing evey store you see and see if there is a dumpster you could look in! Hope you go and find some great things!!
+Dumpster Marcus Thanks Marcus for your response and advice. I'm going to check the laws and then go scouting around. Going to sub to you as well. Thanks again
Almost all of my packing materials comes out of dumpsters, one I go to a couple times a week gets me a garbage bag full of packing peanuts. That saves tons of money.
+craiglist Hunter Nothing wrong with FREE stuff...After my divorce, I was able to survive for 3 years scrapping metal and diving for goodies...Heck, I had my own business card and CUSTOMERS!!!! I still have Shampoo and Conditioners..LOL You can save tons of money doing this stuff...I used gloves, though! Great Video ;)
Corporate waste is disgusting, it shocks me the things I find in dumpsters that the stores field destroy before throwing it away, just to make sure it will never be resold. I find good stuff all the time, it's a worthwhile endeavor.
You are lucky on the Half Price Books finds. In most of the cities that I've been in that have Half Price books they put the books in a sealed compacting dumpster or they lock the lids.
wow... I dont get it, around here, there is 24/7 security, how do you avaoid any employees and the like,, do you go on Holidays, ie like labor day, or early in the morning like 6am, everything seems deserted
Chris Rock By law all recalls have to be sent back to manufacturers to get their refund and to dispose of it correctly. p.s. I can’t stand the real Chris Rock. Ur better off using ur real name and headshot instead of his. Lol!
In the Tampa bay area if you get caught doing that you can get arrested, that is what I told. The dumpster here some companies have cameras and locks to stop people., I hate that.
Hey Pete just wanted to say great video. I have been watching your vids for a while but finally subscribed under my personal channel recently and now under this one.as I wanted one to start doing videos for my reselling business as well. I am a newbie to the game and this was the first time I have seen you do a dumpster diving vid. For those of you who are too freaked out by doing it are have not tried it I would check out your local laws and if it is legal like in mine go out and try it. I have found some unbelievable stuff both new and used in a very short time. It is amazing what people and businesses throw away and what the businesses will do to stuff they throw away to discourage people from pulling it from the dumpsters. I have seen them put paint in and on products rip and tear holes in stuff and destroy it all becuase they don't want people to pull it out. It is really shameful when they should be putting the same time and efforts to donating stuff and helping people with it! I have pulled electronics out that were just missing a power cord including a portable dvd/ipod player and I found a cord at Goodwill for a few bucks and it plays like a dream and it retailed for a 100 bucks new. Now my daughter has it and loves it! Same thing with a a Sony surround system minus the speakers, got some decent speakers and viola I have a great sound system now! I have found brand new with tags clothes someone threw out with some used ones that were all clean and all good brands! I have about 6 boxes of stuff to process from 3 nights from Half Price Books, Game STOP among a few others in a recent major haul! But went back the other day and two out of the 3 dumpsters at one of my honey hole Half Price Books dumpsters I frequented has changed their dumpster service and added locks so it seems they may be starting a trend as this was mentioned on someone else's comment! So sad they should really donate these childrens books especially! Shame on these corporate wasters! Anyways sorry for the book but I always find your vids to be very good and educational and well done! And I really dug this one! Keep up the good work!
It's disgusting and backwards why stores throw perfectly good stuff away, theres a number of useful and charitable causes it could help greatly. Target I think gives to Goodwill. This is why we get regulations, these companies should be made to find use for this, such a waste and bad for the environment. The local outlet mall here sends security guards round 24/7 to stop dumpster driving, but they will let me take big boxes for FBA. The good stuff has to go to landfill though, makes sense!
+Karaboudjan Yeah but if they have to write it off the can't donate it because it was deemed as no good. I used to pull boxes a boxes of Mission tortillas that would last at least a month past exp date but it was expired the the day they throw it out so charitable causes would be like let people starve its expired (best by date mind you, but with the charitable donations, just like your local mall, it can be a liability issue) so Id have to get my hands a little dirty and go to the homeless villages or streets they would line up on to donate it. I wouldnt say this if i still dived often but Goodwill is one of the offenders too. On another note, I read a couple days ago that america throws more of the seafood that it brings in in the trash then it consumes every month
Here in the uk charitable shops get given stuff by the public, then after so long the unsold items get put in binbags and put out for the refuse truck, to be taken to landfill. Why don't they just drop the prices so they would sell. It's crazy!
Awesome have done this many times myself. My grandfather got me started when I was a child. Small note......most women will get pissed if you take them out to eat and then stop by the dumpster on the way home lol
That's my sourcing type too. The only difference is that I have everything on the curb or in regular 30 gal trash cans, so I really don't have to dive. Thanks for sharing Pete.
I can give some insight on why they throw this stuff out. A lot of things at drug stores get thrown out when they're 3 months away from expiration because that's the expected shelf life at home for medical products. For snack food it tends to be thrown out a month before it's expired. It's sad to throw away all of this stuff that's not quite bad yet.
Pete check the expiration dates on any of those items have one. Also most of the Half Price Book stores where I've lived in Texas and Washington states. lock the dumpsters, so that is pretty cool that you can get to them.
One reason many dumpsters are locked is the "divers" often leave a mess after they get what they want. For cleaner diving go to industrial areas where there is much less garbage in the dumpsters.
Scanning In The Mafukin dumpster frikin SAVAGE get that money Pete!!! love the videos thanks a ton for all the advice & dedication you put into paying it forward
Karmah17 Who cares if it’s sealed?? I know grocery stores take older eggs and fill newer egg containers that have a cracked egg. No one knows all that goes on inside stores also. You’d prefer the dumpster in some cases. Lol!
LOVE the "curb finds". I've found a free mid-century drop center dressing table that I cleaned up and sold for $140 and yesterday found a free extra large, hard side dog crate that just needs $10 worth of bolts and will sell for about $75 on CL
Peter you could take note of when the dumpster is empty, thats because they just emptied it (duh lol) but something good to know so you can check inbetween it being so full.
i do the same thing, however i not only do it to make money but to save good things from going to the dump. for certain things i take them to goodwill or a shelter were people in need can use them. and i'm amazed on how many new items retail stores throw away for no reason. their loss my gain.
You need to get yourself an extender. They sell them in the Dollar Store. I think it might be called a reacher, I use it alot to grab things from the dumpster that I can't reach. Happy Picking....
CRAIGSLIST HUNTER: Items that aren't perfect can be place in a "Jumble Box" and sold at an auction. Tell me if you sell some items at auctions. I'll see you at the buffet!
In some states this is ILLEGAL and it will cost you some time in jail or $300 on fines so check before you dive. Legally the merchandise still property of the store wen is on the trash bin
+1miltond I was looking around the back of a shopping center here in the UK ( I just wanted some carbourd for packing) Its all fenced up and locked , I would get done for trespassing for sure
I like this idea of call or contact you government guy legislator and change the law wow there is people naive in the planet to believe that you have a friend in congress that really give a crap about the people are you serious? after the last 25 years of politicians pissing in you face and laughing abut it really ?
Actually trash can be picked through legally and stores can't really say much unless posted or fenced off. Stores don't even own the dumpsters outside of their stores, they are usually rented from whatever company picks it up.
***** I've worked at a mall as well and their trash was, for the most part, crushed in trash compactors. This stopped people from digging through it and the security guards didn't and still don't patrol them. There are, however, some stores like Ultra and Best buy that use dumpsters. I haven't checked them yet but I am very tempted to start going through them. ☺
I like your attitude. My recycle areas are treasure areas. You have to look at everything as a win. I have found some great stuff. Sometimes you win sometimes nothing. Keep digging.
Isn't it criminal that people throw away perfectly good stuff. People in the village that I live will get up your ass about killing a bird or cutting down a tree but they will throw out a working computer without blinking an eye. One guy who knows what I do told me he threw out an entire house full of perfectly good stuff last week and he didn't even offer me a chance to grab it. Un F@$^&ing real!!! Luckily where I live the dump is unmanned.
Encouraging video...... I'm not ashamed to do this, but I probably am WAY too old for it!!!! One suggestion for you....get yourself a 'reacher' to extend your grip.....they are about 3 feet long with a trigger that engages a grip at the other end for picking up light to medium weight items. Might save you from having to climb into a lot of the dumpsters!
Hey need to get your self a grab stick! Has the claw on one end and you just reach in and squeeze the handle and it grabs what's out of your reach! Great video!
What a colossal waste by those stores. A lot of that stuff could help people, including the books, of which there is a shortage for inner-city kids. By getting it back in circulation, you make a living, and some of the stuff finds new homes. Thanks for what you do!
I worked for a big name retail store in the charge back department. Vendors asked that merchandise be labeled as b-marked outs/ damages and destroyed. Store now uses automatic trash compactor. Books got out to a flea market once and store got in trouble with vendor. Goodwill was getting all the shoes, but the crate was pulled out and they were sent to a salvage company.
I think you would've find great treasure if you just dig a bit more in some of those dumpsters. I have been diving for years I get all my food from them and eat like a king. The food dumpsters can be nasty but the non-food are clean.
Can you share what stores you go to that throw away good items? this is a disgrace to our environment. Glad your taking it out to resell save the landfills!!!
I'd be interested in seeing a video on how you keep track of inventory, sales, profits, etc on the computer. ie: excel spreadsheets. What headings do you find most useful? What changes have you made in your bookkeeping/inventory management system since you started? Etc. Thanks
The amount of good things that get thrown away is amazing... I worked in a membership wholesale warehouse blue color... and they threw away atleast 200lb pounds of good food away every night... just because they didn't sale...and the sell by date would expire the next day
Pete< you need one of those grabber things to reach those things in the dumpster that are just out of reach. lol. I understand the "too old for this" crack. haha Take care and happy diving!
OH MAN!!! a dumpster full of books!!! I'd be heaven!!! They should give those kids books to schools though seriously!!! Wish there were open dumpsters at the places near me
The Half Price Bookstore near me ALWAYS has a half full dumpster of books and no trash. There are no less than 20 signs on the dumpster and the back of the building saying no trespassing in the dumpsters.
.. hahaha, I gotta' tell you buddy, you got the junkin' fever bad ... even though you have 2 nice stores, a successful, established Amazon & eBay presence, you still can't resist digging for the free stuff ... I'm the same way, not matter if I won the damn lottery, I think I'd keep right on digging ... it's in the blood ... somebody call me a Doctor, I got the fever bad!
MondosBongos It’s like any addiction. If u loved going to the gym, you’d become addicted to that. Everyone has some form of addiction now with all the social media or gaming pulling ppl in. Marketers target everyone now, but divers get exercise and free items. Gamers sit on their asses and spend more money on games.
People are saying about how wasteful it is to throw some of this old junk away. I've got a better one for you. My sister works at a restaurant (well known) and they throw all kind of food away every day. And I'm talking good food not table scraps. Sad.
Now you're in my sourcing area Pete lol great episode. Should of stuck it out a bit more in the half price books dumpster for more treasures haha but being in a hot dumpster isn't that fun I would imagine.
dumpter diving is good as you show us there are treasures to be found,so those that are prideful this is not for you,and those who don't mind sometimes getting a little dirty well let us at it.
Let me just throw this out there, as I'm a retired dumpster diver... First off you have rats to worry about. They may bite and or have rabies along with carrying other assorted diseases. Secondly you have the police which can nail you for trespassing. Lastly you don't want to dive in the area you live in, as it will swiftly demote any social class you currently have with your neighbors. Otherwise you have a great idea! I never thought to hit major retail stores. PS - Wear gloves!!
I always go for the Craigslist free section always good items. Especially after garage and moving sales. I gotta working fully functional LG surround sound system from a post garage sale Free pick up. Hasn't sold yet but Still cool
+Mary Cole Guys I make $3000 to $4000 a month with eBay by working part time with the help of *MyOnlineSelling .Com* Recommended to all you guys who want to make money with ebay.. I personally tried it and it works….. ============
15:59 selling breast milk pump cups out of a dumpster wataf zero fucks given And before you try and bullshit that they're "sealed" I've sold those before, they are loose within the cardboard box. Bugs could walk right up in that shit. Usually this stuff is clearance at 90% before they toss it, try going in the store and hitting the clearance rack before the stuff becomes garbage 16:39 JUST PLAYIN - you're the bomb. Keep being awesome, great vids, great tips
Cameras at the back of the stores and trespassing, I'm not sure I want to do that, I think I'm too chicken. But great for you, glad you're able to do this and make the profit.
my step dad would do this when I was younger to get cans. living in a small everybody knew he was my step dad. I was so embarrasses. I'm in my 40s now and still can't look people in the eye when I go to my old small town. talk about making a person feel stupid. now if I'm seen by a garbage bin I feel like people think I'm doing this. i dropped out of school and left town at the age of 16. the impact has followed me forever
I was young. and did not know that then. now its ok but still has Ben in my mind. they don't care but it stuck with me. I don't go to my home town enouph to really care. but the "scar" is still there. or do i

Our country wastes too much. It's too bad a lot of places make it illegal to dumpster dive.

Dumpster diving tip... Keep a roll of packing tape in the truck. You can tape those cat litter bags closed and salvage what's left in the bag :)

Chris Rock recalls get sent back to the manufacturer usually thru the claims dept

You are the most dignified man I’ve ever seen in a dumpster! Seriously you make me want to do some diving!!!
Love it!! Don't mind a little dirt on a regular bases: good for the immune system!! LOL
That's my sourcing type too. The only difference is that I have everything on the curb or in regular 30 gal trash cans, so I really don't have to dive. Thanks for sharing Pete.
Pete you should get one of those grapplers on a pole like the one's for reaching stuff on high shelves for this then you won't be to old for this
Lol "I am to old for this shit"

LOVE the "curb finds". I've found a free mid-century drop center dressing table that I cleaned up and sold for $140 and yesterday found a free extra large, hard side dog crate that just needs $10 worth of bolts and will sell for about $75 on CL
Do you ever get caught by employees or security?
yes i agree 100%
Resellers Highway those suck
I really enjoy your video tips ! I'm researching wether or not to try eBay and such,,, I'll be watching and learning thank you
Deborah DHARMA Ackerman
Can you share what stores you go to that throw away good items? this is a disgrace to our environment. Glad your taking it out to resell save the landfills!!!
Great channel, great content. 👌🏻 thank you for all the ideas. I am an eBay seller too so I love watching for ideas.
Fantastic video. The expiration dates are the only thing I can think of that would make retailers so wasteful.
Nice one again :D, good nich "subjects" on the reselling stuff. Keep going !
When I was a kid I found some valuable old football cards in a dumpster. I need to get out there and do some more diving!
Why am I in love with this video
Great job! You're never too old as long as you can still get in and out of the dumpster and making money so keep on "Dumpster Diving". haha
OH MAN!!! a dumpster full of books!!!
This is actually kind of awful. Why do people throw away perfectly good items? For goodness sake, donate them to a good charity or something.
.. hahaha, I gotta' tell you buddy, you got the junkin' fever bad ... even though you have 2 nice stores, a successful, established Amazon & eBay presence, you still can't resist digging for the free stuff ... I'm the same way, not matter if I won the damn lottery, I think I'd keep right on digging ... it's in the blood ... somebody call me a Doctor, I got the fever bad!

It’s like any addiction.
I'd die for that shopping basket! You should buy/find one of those grabber/reacher tools from Walgreens so you don't have to jump into the bins. :)
dumpter diving is good as you show us there are treasures to be found,so those that are prideful this is not for you,and those who don't mind sometimes getting a little dirty well let us at it.
I enjoyed your video.Usually I watch beauty channels but your videos are useful and nice to watch.Subscribed.
Very cool👍🏻 you should invent some kind of very long item with a large shovel like scoop, so you don't have to get in the hot dumpsters😜
+vanessa Herron I use a garden hoe - it's perfect and you can lift very heavy boxes out of the dumpsters.
I love your videos. Keep them coming
Do you ever get caught or run off while diving during the day? What about security cameras on the buildings? We've usually done ours at night.
Scrap Smith don’t think it’s illegal?
Let me just throw this out there, as I'm a retired dumpster diver... First off you have rats to worry about. They may bite and or have rabies along with carrying other assorted diseases. Secondly you have the police which can nail you for trespassing. Lastly you don't want to dive in the area you live in, as it will swiftly demote any social class you currently have with your neighbors. Otherwise you have a great idea! I never thought to hit major retail stores. PS - Wear gloves!!
you should get one of those long claw thingies so if you can't reach something you can use the claw grabbing thing.
Cops font ask what's a nicely dressed white man with a nice truck doing in the dumpsters?
Loved this vlog!!!!!!
Thanks for sharing!!!
Great Video! What day of the week was it since it looked pretty deserted where you went?
I "dived" last week and I found several huge magnetic posters by Addis. Posted these on EBay as a bundle today for $25.00. I'll see if they will sell.
take a smalll step ladder with you to help get in and out

Great video. What are the big ticket items that are easy to sell and/or sell at a good price?
please be safe and wear gloves and and boots. never know who else might uses those trash can
They should be donating this stuff to help out schoolkids, ridiculous!
"Got this cool, uh, picnic basket. Nothing wrong with it, *scree-pop* Now it's perfect!" XD
15:59 selling breast milk pump cups out of a dumpster wataf zero fucks given
And before you try and bullshit that they're "sealed" I've sold those before, they are loose within the cardboard box. Bugs could walk right up in that shit.
Usually this stuff is clearance at 90% before they toss it, try going in the store and hitting the clearance rack before the stuff becomes garbage
16:39
JUST PLAYIN - you're the bomb. Keep being awesome, great vids, great tips
You, sir, are a genus.
Cameras at the back of the stores and trespassing, I'm not sure I want to do that, I think I'm too chicken. But great for you, glad you're able to do this and make the profit.
The 007 enemy intro is hillarious
my step dad would do this when I was younger to get cans. living in a small everybody knew he was my step dad. I was so embarrasses. I'm in my 40s now and still can't look people in the eye when I go to my old small town. talk about making a person feel stupid. now if I'm seen by a garbage bin I feel like people think I'm doing this. i dropped out of school and left town at the age of 16. the impact has followed me forever
why would you care what other ppl think. they make fun of you to hide there insecurities.
I was young. and did not know that then. now its ok but still has Ben in my mind. they don't care but it stuck with me. I don't go to my home town enouph to really care. but the "scar" is still there. or do i
"Damn it, I'm too old for this shit."
Hahahahaha
