I was wondering how he always got such a unique cross stick sound on his snare...never realized he grazes the side of the small hats on the way down. Genius!
I love this. Jojo just took us on a journey through a drum solo. Heres a drummer with crazy fast chops but doesn't have to pull them out to wow everybody.
Wow! I love the way he's able to subdivide that slow 12/8 beat and make it sound like he completely changes time signatures and tempos all at once. But he maintains that same tempo and the same slow 12/8 beat and keeps coming back to it. Try tapping your foot along to the quarter note while he's playing those crazy subdivisions and polyrhythms and see if you're still in tempo when he comes back to the slow 12/8 groove. It requires quality listening skills as well as a strong internal clock.
What a wonderful musician. Jojo has technique sufficient to light the kit on fire at any time. Yet he creates a specific mode of tension by selectively deploying it and whipping it out once he's lulled us into a deep, melodically induced trance. Further, to hear him speak about his concepts regarding his musicality is like going on a transcendental journey to a mystical land! There's a lot of cats out there that I like to listen to. Jojo has been anointed in a very unique way.
Gordon Fremen hmmm I’m not so sure. I think it’s just personal preference and that’s totally fine. My original comment was purely just a joke. People can use whatever the hell they want on their kit and I’m happy for them.
He does use a china but not always. It's usually on his right but I've seen one on the left as well. He likes to change his setup from time to time. Two Ominis or one Omni and a Fierce Ride, etc. His stack evolves too, it's usually a (Fierce) hihat top on a china but in this case it's a prototype that I don't recognize.
He used to play an 18'' or 19'' AAX (or similar) china that was placed on his left side, next to the secondary snare, that was until 2011, then he switched it to right side, next to the 8'' tom. In 2015 he stopped using a china. And in 2107 he stopped using the left side Omni (at least with Nerve) :)
Not only is Jojo a beast, but the mix on this recording is so clean. Any engineers in the house could take notes on the compression used to accentuate Jojos dynamic control and drum tonality. Love.
yes as a drummer and currently studying music productiom at the moment, I agree that this is a sick mix! Spot on infact. I haven't even used the mixing headphones, just through crappy phone buily in speakers and they cut through still.
My favorite drummer because of his uniqueness and also he is as technical as anyone out there. No weaknesses anywhere. Most guys use their hi hat as a metronome, his Independence shows that it is a separate musical instrument, same for everything
I love when he drops one stick and then like a total beast throws the other one and plays with his hands. I've had that same experience one too many times where you relax too much and you into it that you just lose your sticks. Thanks for the idea Jojo!!! Sounded great as usual!
One of the coolest things about this piece that I think a lot of people haven’t noticed is in the beginning with the cross sticks. He’s coming down on that mini hat side swiping it right before he hits the rim on his snare. It’s like he’s doing a one handed flam cross stick! Little things like that are so creative and that’s what makes Jojo one of the greatest drummers of all time!
I was so tired of drummers that just played like only speed and acrobatics were important. Then I discovered Jojo and some other drummers and a whole new world opened for me. This is a guy that really finds the musicality of the solo in every note keeping the groove and making the drums sing
It's crazy how when he messes up you barely notice. He clicked the stivks, missed a drum and dropped a stick and then he threw the other stick and said" to hell with it, I don't need it". and proceeds to produce beautiful music. That's a true professional man. That's what we should all inspire to be. Man I love the Drums.
The song is called Mindwash from his album The distance between zero and one with Nerve if anyone was wondering I love it, I saw them live in Paris in 2019, they are simply out of this world AMAZING, most of what they do is improvised live and at the end they were very friendly and chatty, all of them are masters in their area.
A man, drummer...even with worldwide fame will never do a shampoo commercial! The most effortless technique on the planet. Other cats can do what Jojo does, but his feel is unmatched...and look. Highest form of drumming expression here. Anyone that does not get that, just does not get that. Jojo strives for art and achieves just that.
What a great artist and a great drum sound! Evans heads are definitely some of the best sounding heads I've heard. I still have Remo Pinstripes on my set but I've used Evans on other kits and they are just absolutely immense! Just need to bring myself to buy some new Evans heads. Everything from D'Addario company is just great product, cables, strings, sticks, but especially Evans heads! Keep doing what you're doing Evans and I'll eventually get around to buying some new skins to put on my set for my RUclips videos!
Lil JOV: Agreed. I started using his sticks 4 years ago. I never knew a shorter stick could feel that good. I just had to bring everything on my kit in a little closer, that's all.
That crazy hop he does on his bass drum pedal to get double time beats is, as far as I know, unprecedented. At least, I, for one, have never seen a single pedal bass drum played this fast.
Kick: Coated G1 for batter (sometimes with EQ pad, sometimes not) Toms: Clear G1 for reso, Coated G14 for batter Snares: Hazy 200 for reso, and batter side he seems to go between Coated GPlus (the single-ply 12-mil head) or Coated G14. With his (now discontinued) Sonor Earth Snare he also used a Marching Hybrid head. I've got that snare and that head, and it's a good combo. In fact all of these are great heads.
You can replicate the whole kit/studio etc, but only JOJO will ever sound like that! Putting it bluntly,he would sound great on a shit kit, whereas most people would sound shit on a great kit etc!
It makes it more exciting when speed is used sparingly. It's more impressive to be creative than to be fast.
BrandonPryorMusic : Agreed
BrandonPryorMusic
Jojo transcended musicality, he plays tastefully
this is actually a song called mindwash, but I see what you mean
a true artist... this guy deserves fame, not cooperdrummer
Hahaha, win!
he dont need fame to show how good he is
I agree, cooper is very fucking overrated
+Khalifa Al-Ard i know that, i am not ignorant
+James Lamm :(
Wow! I love the way he's able to subdivide that slow 12/8 beat and make it sound like he completely changes time signatures and tempos all at once. Definitely easier said than done. And no, I couldn't do it. Mayer is a monster!
eardrum buzzer Try it again.
drewper73 I need to learn to understand 12/8 signatures. Dang...
+Josh Barry 4/4 in triplets
Mago simple as that

Fantastic! Thank you Jojo and Evans!
Cheers!
I’m showing this to anyone who claims they need 8 tom toms on their kit so they can get a fuller sound. Simply amazing!
Ross On Drums also Travis Orbin has proven this
@@animateantiques1585 Travis is the shit
what about the people who say that about cymbals
it really depends on style and the kind of music you're playing
Gordon Fremen hmmm I’m not so sure. I think it’s just personal preference and that’s totally fine. My original comment was purely just a joke. People can use whatever the hell they want on their kit and I’m happy for them.
One of the better cymbal setups out there... so many tones / flavors
I love his set-up, he's very economical, everything has it's purpose. very fitting to his style & skill.
He does use a china but not always. It's usually on his right but I've seen one on the left as well. He likes to change his setup from time to time. @@Bluums Yes. And I believe he has ditched the Chopper as well.
@Xtra Spice Mikey ruclips.net/video/2VSGSFWagl4/видео.html
I liked this performance. Really like his set up too
+Fabio Cacchioli Glad you enjoyed it!
Evans Drumheads
Jojo knows every instant of time and space between two beats. His understanding of swing is beyond anyone else I've ever heard.
What a fucking legend! Thank you Evans for bringing the real master to play this art piece!
Glad you enjoyed it! Keep your eyes out for more videos in our Set the Tone series.
+Evans Drumheads what does he play witch piece does he play
Jojo improvised elements of this performance.
Every time I watch JoJo, I am in awe... I love how he plays with so much feel and emotion. So great!
Not only is Jojo a beast, but the mix on this recording is so clean. Any engineers in the house could take notes on the compression used to accentuate Jojos dynamic control and drum tonality. Love.
Thanks so much!

true
Honestly, how can anyone "dislike" this video?
But who cares though, this guy is a Drum Legend!
Great video!
My favorite drummer because of his uniqueness and also he is as technical as anyone out there. No weaknesses anywhere. Most guys use their hi hat as a metronome, his Independence shows that it is a separate musical instrument, same for everything
Evans makes easily the best bass drum heads. My emad sounds amazing
I love when he drops one stick and then like a total beast throws the other one and plays with his hands. I've had that same experience one too many times where you relax too much and you into it that you just lose your sticks. Thanks for the idea Jojo!!! Sounded great as usual!
Awesome! the man is a master in using his extreme technical skills musically, dynamically
i love his drum set up. so simple yet so intricate and complex. i definitely need to get rid of a tom tom and implement a side snare.
So much more than just a drummer. Words can't explain how I feel when I watch him play

Holy shit that was absolutely beautiful- loved the groove and the feel !

The monochrome with the dark red background looked amazing. It really added to the feel of the performance.
Sometime i imagine... If miles davis is alive right now, who would be his drummer? i guess this guy..
Miles would have been obsessed with Jojo if he heard him play.
Him or Deantoni Parks.
Him or Mark Guiliana.
I love the creativity of the drumming as well as the set up.
Jojo is constantly experimenting with his setup and his drumming. Definitely inspiring!
Even with the stick drop. Keeps the groove. Real drummer there
I liked that he made it a part of the performance and then was like "screw it" towards the end and threw the other stick. lol
großartiges Video - auch vom Bild her
perfection of drumming! 🔥😍
to me this was simply flawless!
2:45 alright... i didn't know that was possible
Now we have something new to work on 8)
where have you been man?? i mean heel toe, heel up and heel down does exist¡
Not heel toe. Power sliding.
Crimson Sunrise
Jojo saids heel toe man haha
alex gonzalez Where did he say it? It looks exactly like his power slide that he demonstrates in his second DVD, which I have.
what a work! sound, timing of speed, artistic way of playing, musicality, everything in control, effortless...what else?! lovin it
I can listen to this all day.
Mr. Jojo!! You are amazing
i like how he effortlessly keeps playing even after dropping the stick... real class act right here
A true master. Making music not just a beat.
I can watch this ALL day!
He thinks, plays and feels outside the box. Amazing.
Watched his group three times in Beijing. This guys has the never expiring creativity passport.
Jojo is always inspiring to watch and listen to
Forget the 32nd note one-foot sextuplets at 02:45--the timekeeping from 03:24-03:37 is inhuman.
I'm convinced he swallowed a metronome and they just left it in there.
Great floor tom sound! .....and also the entire drumset

he sets the benchmark for the tone! @evans is there a behind the scenes with tuning and recording equipment? the tone is perfect!
perfect tone for the drums :D
top 3 favorite solo in my book. unique as it gets!
It's the upside down stick for me
amazing skill . amazing sound. good job jojo & evans
Thanks for watching, Heru!

This is a good lesson in Dynamics. A kaleidoscope of sounds can be created and enjoyed.
Jojo is an incredibly musical player, the amount of motivic development in his soloing is insane!
Such an inspirational musician!
That effortless switch from match to traditional grip impressed me more than anything he actually played lol.
Amazing contrast of red background! Great playing too
Too good, I never want to see this again, I'm gonna pretend it's never happened.
Magical... I'm going to watch it again.
The right side signature crash sounds great!
fantastic performance, thank you for the inspiration!

Evans Drumheads
Absolutely!! Keep making awesome products!!
Holy modulation!
man. this is ridiculous. #JoJoforMayer
I would totally use Twitter just to get that hashtag trending.
SeanIsaacTng
Fuck Twatter but your suggestion is a sound one
(See what i did there?)
#JoJoforMayer yes please
wow, beautiful playing
Incredible sound Incredible drum
Such independence this guy is insane, that hi hat is so consistent
Incredible. He's so avant garde that his "mistakes" actually add to the performance.
Best drummer I see.
One of my favorites!!!!!!
Im not saying Jojo isn't a well known drummer, at all, but i think he deserves WAY more recognition than he appears to get. He's TOO good. God damn.
Wow, amazing. Great timing, brilliant.
Awesome playing!
I LOVE this solo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
my favourite heads are the black chromes but these sound great aswell
Muy Grande!! Genial!! Auténtico!! Gracias!! Eterno Jojo Mayer
Jojo's amazing. So unique is his style.
wowww!!! more drums and no wars youre a genius yoyo
Wow! Beat that!
JoJo you inspire me to Play "better" and keep "Learning". Evans, You make me sound Good...
Just bought his signature sticks!
His sticks are some of the best out there. Good balance of weight and length.
Luca Miebach ikr. i thought that Peter Erskine's ride sticks were the best.... yeah i was very wrong lol
Lil JOV: Agreed. I started using his sticks 4 years ago. I never knew a shorter stick could feel that good. I just had to bring everything on my kit in a little closer, that's all.
Bryan Forth Same here! Once I switched to his sticks it changed everything for me! I love the weight too! 👌🏻
Diane Cancino : the weight of these sticks is absolutely perfect. I've never felt a more perfectly balanced stick than this.
this looks so good
OMG.... freaking awesome!!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
th most best drum solo int tjis world, Its my Idol, never I can make this, its wooow

I'd love to know which heads were used though........ xD

Love the kit configuration definitely gonna try it myself.
Such an inspiration
Fantastic melodism!
This is just amazing.
Awesome groove 👏
Fantastic snare!
Played off the dropped stick like a fuckin champ. Everything about this was butter!
Glad you enjoyed the video! Be sure to watch his interview as well.
God Sabian Fierce crashes sound so great under mics. Also I like how that stick drop was like no big deal lol
now that ... is a composition right there.
Q : do you know what a metronome is?
A : A little short guy from the big city.
God bless Y'all.
Excellent copy and paste skills.
brilliant a s always!
Jojo is the musical genius on the drums!
Excelente performance, en un perfecto relajo, un agrado ver este video, psicodelia en la batería.
Amazing sound.
