All three Dune versions thus far have their pros and cons.
Here the pros are the story and most of the characterizations. Irulan, Jessica and the Baron are all great. And Barbora Kodetova is the definitive Chani.
Cons: the film-video look, graphics and some of the costume designs (silly hats!). And the depiction of the Guild is ridiculous. Although I did love the opulent decadence of the Emperor and his palace. And I also like that most of the cast were unfamilar to me and not big stars. So they were just the characters without any baggage.
But I do think that the Messiah/Children of Dune series is excellent overall.

Yeah while I thought most of the costumes were cool the hats could be distracting 😆 Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

I’ve binge watched (listened to) all your content while I’ve been working nights recently. Your points of view are always interesting to me

One thing to remember about the graphics is just how bad our tvs were in 2000. This was back when CRT tvs were still common and HD-tv was just starting up at all.

    SUPERSPOILER
I think the best part here is Chani's death. It really pictures what was going on in Paul's heart, the inevitability of that future and the fact that in the end everything he did was for prolonging Chani's life. And it makes you wonder... was it right to kill 61 billion people and destroy a culture in order to save the ones you love and obtain revenge for your father? And also, the contempt of Leto towards the cowardess of his father.... chills.

so frustrating that all of a sudden the series was pulled from youtube! it's not streaming anywhere and the CDs are hard to come by- literally forcing us into piracy.

Yeah so annoying! Maybe they will be streaming soon and that's why they were pulled from yt...

I definitely saw that coming, due to the popularity of the new film.

Ara was casted and her scenes where filmed in Lynch Dune, but the scenes were all cut. Some have been restored and can be found on youtube

I wouldn't say Leto was good guy who become villian - it is quite opposite: Leto was someone who decided to make sure humans survived whatever the cost. He became tyrant to ensure this. He definitely was ruthless, but his goal definitely was noble. Fact that after 3 thousand years of his reign he still hold to this, show he actually did NOT lose mind, as he was still very much focused on his initial goal. It's hard to label Leto simply as good guy or bad guy; from perspective of his subjects he was monster, from human as species persepective he is hero who saved humans. It's not really question about is Leto good or not, it's more about: is greater good morally justified? Some will say 'yes', some 'no' - Leto certainly believed in greater good as he chose this path and he achieved all his goals: save humans, save dessert, bring back sandworms and create human lineage free of prescient powers.
As for Irulan portrayal in series - she was sidelined, but in book version Children of Dune she does even less, so I personally liked they expanded in show her arc a bit, gave her more scenes with Jessica and twins. 💗 She is also brighter and more intelligent, whereas in book she for long time doesn't see how much danger Alia posses. I personally believe show is superior to book, but maybe it's because I watched series first, and then I read book. 💓💓💓

Great video as always!!! I know you said this will be your last Dune video in a while but... Would you be interested in covering the "Jodorowsky's Dune" documentary? It's powerfully interesting and I think you'd like it!

@@WhytheBookWins If you do end up finding Jodorowsky's work interesting I recommend you read the graphic novel "The Incal" which will have a film adaptation soon, with Taika Waititi at the helm. Would be a cool book vs film video! Although it is a graphic novel and not sure if you're also into those.

I always say - as a book reader - these are the best adaptations of Frank Herbert’s novels.

    • @WhytheBookWins
      @WhytheBookWins  7 месяцев назад

Yeah I can see that! I personally think the new movies capture the book better, even if the plot details differ at times. But again, I can see why book lovers would prefer the mini series

The 84 Lynch Dune had no graphics to look bad. The special effects are models, real world. Computer graphics didn't exist yet.

awwww. Sad to hear you didn't like the Dune as much. Its my favorite of the 3 adaptations personally. Its probably like touring Europe tho..... Like you go to France and Rome and see the amazing architecture from 500 and 800 years ago and then you go to Greece and see similar architecture but thousands of years older....Kinda is far less impressive seeing Greece after you see Rome and France. Have to see Greece first then go to Italy and France xD
Children of Dune was awesome! i can't wait to see how they adapt that one. I also thought that sexual tension between them was weird too haha.

Yeah, seeing this after watching the new ones really wasn't fair! But yeah, I liked Children of Dune much better here and am curious to see if they will adapt that one in the future!

Currently writing a book on Dune called "Done". It's a 1500 page tome with one sentence "I'm done with Dune" written over and over two million times (Think of The Shining with "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy"). Love your channel Laura, always look forward to new content but Odds Bodkins is fantasy and world building not my genre. It's me. Not you. Until next time. All the best. 🤡🤡🤡🤡
