That footage can also be seen in Peter Jackson's documentary. Cleaned up, speed adjusted and colourized by computers. It's simply astonishing. The apprehension on their faces is quite apparent, and for good reason. Imagine leaving that scant safety and walking to your own execution just a few hundred feet away. Yet they still did it, and for that they have my eternal respect. They deserved so much better. God bless their memory.
My adoptive mother’s father (we called him grandad anyway) lost two cousins who were brothers on the Somme and a brother at Passchendael. Can anyone imagine the horror of anticipating what’s going to happen to you if you’re in a second and subsequent waves on seeing the masses of corpse and horribly mutilated dead and dying. Thank you for your excellent and informative post.
As usual sources are excellent. Stats are accurate.Video is terrific especially the real remains today.I will look forward to seeing more of your calibre work.
Thanks! I'm planning on making a series on the battle of the Somme. I recently bought some books and that combined with the internet, I was able to find much more information on July 1, 1916.
Was in Sunken lane yesterday 28/07/2019 visited for the first time, I have not met one person yet who has ever told me why the Hawthorn ridge crater was exploded at 0720.. Perhaps we will never know, but what we do know is those men went to their deaths that morning and were massacred by withering machine gun fire. Just another disaster on that morning to go with all the rest.
In case you are interested. The firing of the Hawthorn mine was a compromise between the Corps commander of the divisions assaulting Beaumont Hamel ,Hunter Weston, and Rawlinson the 4th army commander. Hunter Weston actually wanted it blown hours earlier, but Rawlinson said 7.20 was the earliest he would allow and Hunter Weston accepted. 7.20 it was.
Very informative video and explains a lot of how this turned into such a disaster ,the men in Sunken lane were in such a bad position, caught in the crossfire no doubt
The Pity..The absolute Pity that this scene evokes will forever be etched into the Hearts of all mortals ,and haunts me every time I view it!! God Bless these poor Soldiers and may they rest in Peace!
Great video!! Did you use the unit war diary or is there another source on 1st LF on the first day of the Somme, just curious as it would be good to find the source.
Hello, I used the unit war diary which I found on Invisionzone1914-1918. You can find the link to it underneath the video, but I'll insert the link here as well: 1914-1918.invisionzone.com/forums/topic/151439-sunken-lane/ I have also updated my script to a more detailed degree, so there will be a new version coming up when I'm done filming at the site with a better camera. I hope to do this this year, but I can't promise anything.
Where can I find this units diaries? Links don't work. Please and Thank You. :) Also, Does Anyone know the Name of the guy with a mustache that stares at the camera almost the whole time?? I'm dying to find out who he is??
Don't know his name, but a lipreader some years ago was able to interpret what He was saying....... '. Sorry I didn't get out when I had the chance....next time I'm gettin out I tell ye....
The footage was from a very brief visit to the Sunken lane, it was one of my first WW1 videos and I was just starting to learn how to make videos. Usually I make the scripts beforehand to then go out and shoot the footage, but this was a bit of a surprise visit, so I wasn't prepared at all. I'm planing to remake this video and add a few more 1 July 1916 videos with much more footage.
question: what happened to the memorial stone? did someone purposely shatter that? i hope it was an accident, those men deserve all the respect in the world

No shit Sherlock
My Grandfather Bernard Gartland was a sergeant in the Lancashire fusiliers ,he survived the somme but didn't talk about it
Wow, Respect to your grandfather, he really went through hell .
Very well made; thank you. Been there a couple of times and it is a very haunted place. They shall never be forgotten
Went to the sunken lane on a WW1 battlefield study with the British Army, very sad to imagine the fear these lads must of been when going over the top

My great uncle died in front of Beaumont Hamel having been in the first wave out of sunken lane. He was 18 years old.

The stone someone mentioned has been remade and is still standing in the trees, you have to seek it out but it's there intact.
What a shear waste of young lives. Thank you for a very informative description of what happened at sunken lane.

That cracked Lancashire Fusiliers monument needs repairing
Luckily it was already replaced last time I was there.
My grandfather was in the Lancashire fusiliers at sunken lane Beaumont Hemel but he survived. He also would not talk about it.
I can image him not wanting to talk about it. I have nothing but the deepest respect for someone like your grandfather.
@@TheAceDestroyer Thank you.
Wish someone would identify some fellas in the Malians film.
Well explained.

The AceDestroyer That’s good to hear. Thanks for the video, it was very informative and a nice tribute
