Do you hate drum machines? I used to but now I'm not so sure.
This video features three drum machines, the Boss DR 01S, The Trio and Beat Buddy.
The Boss "rhythm partner" is definitely my favourite because it suits the folk singer. It has loads of individual percussion instruments like shaker, congo drums, cajun, tambourine etc.
This machine is a dedicated unit for the lover of world music - not your average crash, bang, wallop merchant.
Each percussion instrument can be used alone or in combinations.

I have one of these and there is a lot you can do with it. I have even used it on some recordings. It is very versatile. It does have an adjustable reverb effect built in as well. Get the foot switch.
Run through a stereo delay pedal, this unit can get really interesting to experiment with.

I'm a harpist (the string kind). I would love the Boss! I specialize in performances for Assisted Living and Memory Care audiences, as well as background gigs. But just to jam with this at home would make me so happy!

On behalf of those living in Assisted Living, I thank you for your efforts to share your Music with them. My Parents lived in a wonderful Assisted Lv situation and LOVED visiting Musicians, especially the Harpist and Pianist. They never missed a Performance! I know how much it enriched their World and they always said so with such great appreciation and enthusiasm.

Yeah u rite..Bass also sounds awful to me..I just use whole unit as drum machine I dont want to teach it songs cuz it fills up that slot.Also I don't mind the built in distortion it can give you if you pass thru it.Thick.

Great review and explanation of the unit. I got the beat buddy but too hard to use for a gigs and this may be the solution, of course.with the foot switch added. Thanks!

I own the Beat Buddy and enjoy it a lot, the only thing that I dont like about it is the foot switch that triggers the Beat Buddy is cheaply made & breaks right after the warranty expires (2 ) years . Great video btw , very intuitive I'll have to check out the Boss drum machine 😎👍 🥁🎶🎶

I love drum machines especially my uncle Ric’s Roland R8 which he gave to me. It is a massive drum machine that contains not only stereo outs but also ate assignable outs. I would have to use a 32 channel mixer to enable me to mix all the drum machine/sampler sections with a mixer. I have the Mackie CR1604VLZ (16 channels) and Yamaha MG06XU (6 channels). Not all DMs are “mechanical”. The R8 is considered a human rhythm composer because a person can physically play out the drum machine pads dynamically. What an innovation. The humans who renounce drum machines are those who either only witnessed the Step sequencers or early drum machines which are simply for programming or just computerized production of Top 40 hits.

Is there a balanced line out for pumping through a sound system?
Whdt a great bit of kit, what does it sound like through a guitar amp? Or fo you need to go through a P A live? Cheers Martyn
Would have liked to hear it with your style of music. Pleasant Latin rhythms? Light jazz sounds?
The old Boss DR5 is an awesome drim machine with 1 track of drums that you can program and 3 tracks for bass, piano or whatever you want to add. You can build songs with different patches for each part. It also has a foot switch if you want to use it live and tons of other features. The Zoom r24 digital recorder also has it's own drum machine and also works great for playing backing tracks and can be used as your stage mixer. My Digitech Jam Man looper also works great as a backing track player. You can import tracks off your computer and you can carry around all your backing tracks in a unit the size of a standard stomp box.
The Boss DR-5 is a beast!

@@Jimmywilliams_ the Boss DR5 works both as a midi slave or master. the jamman and Zoom R24 do not have any easy way of syncing up with other devices.

I am from the Bahamas, and I start using drum machines after having to work finish a job after the Drummer pick up.his snare and said.he's not playing anymore, because of a drummer stop playing on the job.
I will Always have one for emergency.

I just got my rhythm partner and LOVE it. I would be great fun if you could recommend some drum patterns for calypso, country, rock….. I find it hard to match a pattern to a song. Do you know of any lists of drum patterns? Thanks in advance for your help.

" He´s behind you !! " seriously, great review. Done everything you´ve done too. Finally decided to go on without Drum units. Unless absolutely needed - then Beat Buddy, its got Midi Sync to loop my Voicelive 3.
I might give it a try? Maybe wait to see if the price gets a bit lower. New ones I found for $245, and the foot switch is about $50. I owned the trio and absolutely hated the thing! Never got a decent bass line out of it either. Thanks for the review!

The Trio+ can be set up for songs no problem. Its easy to use for live gigs and has bass too. Its definately not a toy.
Wish you would have modelled it a bit and played along with it. Can it be played through an extension speaker?
Thanks for this Demo - definitely helped me make a decision which I'm sure save me some $. I do wish you had at least played the Drums a few seconds (even tho you ignore them) just to hear what they sounded like. You piqued my interest wondering why you dismiss them completely? I also play mostly Folk/Country, etc. but creatively, on occasion when writing, drum percussion would be helpful. But thanks again for taking the Time to share & Demo - JBC/NYC

This is EXACTLY what I'm looking for! I play Celtic music, but also find myself playing solo guitar gigs for country, soft rock, ie. Cat Stevens, Gordon Lightfoot..light rock- Journey, Styx, James Taylor...my primary gigs are coffee houses, breweries, bistros, festivals..

The down side is actually also the plus point, the emphasis on Latin styles which is great, but comes at the expense of straight rock n blues, which even acoustic guitarists play
being a drummer as well ....i am going to loop rhythms i make myself with a footpedal and handclap - so much better to do it live i think

The beat buddy is very complicated, it won’t play a whole song, you have to manually transition every part. Some songs in the premium library have 27 transitions plus fills etc. it also won’t stop at the end of the song, it’s more like a looper and just loops back to the beginning unless you double/ Triple tap to stop it. You have to learn the timing of all the parts when you need to transition including the duration to hold the pedal down or you’ll mess up the song; not good live !
It’s like learning another instrument, you have to be prepared to interact with it like live looping with lots of layers. If you just want a drum machine to play songs like a drummer it’s a ball ache and a waste of money.
After saying that it’s well built, has a good premium library of cover songs and sounds good. But lacks all the basic features the average guitar player in a covers band would need. I’m not posting this to be grumpy, but when I was looking at getting one I wish someone had said this to me. I’d have saved myself a lot of money 🙂

Hello Simon. I have a question regarding the Boss DR-01S. I want to use it live in performance. I have the count-in programmed. I want to have a break (using a footswitch pedal). When I re-enter the rhythm (by footswitch) the count-in comes on again. I don't want this, I just just want the rhythm to resume.
Have you used it in live settings yet? I'm interested to know whether these are versatile enough for live work.
No I haven't used it in a live setting. The reason is that it's really just a glorified drum machine, great for practice but not for live work. Much better to get a Kick Pony stomp box with the various different sounds it can make and you can control. @@michaelduke2026
Isn't Trio much easier than using Boss DR 01S, ? because all you need is to strum to get automatically what you want
I can't believe that there isn't more similar product available. Also foot operated percussion. Companies like Akai or Alesis make drum pads but they hand operated, would be nice to have foot operated pads for guitarists. Boss makes the SPD one, but they are expensive. You could need three for bass drum, rim and snare. There are far too many stand alone musicians improvising the foot operated percussion with stomp boxes. We need professional gear.

I'm the same when it comes to bang and clatter, too much for my head and it also does not fit with my style of playing/singing...I prefer the tranquil side of life for the most part.
Christ I swear you made this for me. I know it’s an old video but I am kind of a solo player singer and I have a beat buddy, I have a trio, they’re both great but they’re expensive and I didn’t love them.
I have a trio.. Fun to play with.. But it makes it an expensive toy. Agreed, the bass is ordinary

It's too light to use as an effective door stop. Don't want you trapping your fingers.
He’s right about the digitech trio. It’s bass lines are not always right. The drums are fine, bass lines are wrong.
Theres a big problem with it. When you turn to a boss pedal, and you choose for instant activate an desactivate one instrument, in preset one, he does it for all the presets, doesn't make song by song. It's Like a bug, and no one in the company can resolve that problem... And in the begining, it works fine, saved changes Song by song. Money back, unfortunaly.

That Trio Plus always gets the thumbs down. You need to work with it. I have been using it for a couple years now in my solo/duo on weekends. Over a hundred cover songs on it with the SD cards.
What an honest Vid--how to use a drum machine in the real world in front of an audience hope the big 3 see this / we're not kiddie tekno geeks who want a hand grenade beat box that goes boom in the basement / just something easy to interact with / real musicians want to play not play with JUNK /electronic pianos where nowhere until (velocity) touch was invented/timing & volume for our playing /can't they make that / the first one with that will revolutionize what AI can do and dominate the market(Rolands in the mid 70's)bells whistles and shit by these guys put musicians where we are today /Rock Band appearing on shelves of the goodwill/with the time spent on this crap a new crop of young musician would be here instead / instead of twitling their thumbs on useless apps promising the world and give nothing
