we have TONS of carob trees here in Portugal, mainly in the south where I live :D I don't even take snacks to school, because whenever I'm hungry I just pick fresh carobs from one of the trees and eat them xD
I saw carob seeds on a nursery website and decided to search youtube for more information on this fruit. I'm not surprised to see John has a video on this (and an old one at that!) with a wealth of information. I had no idea it grew into a tree and that it takes 10 years for the tree to produce plentifully. Phew. Wish I could taste this. I'll try to find it at Whole Foods or Trader Joe's. Hope they have it. Thanks John!
My neighbor has a carob tree that drops literally thousands of pods into my yard. I have never once thought I could be eating them rather than throwing them away, until now when I saw your video. Thanks for enlightening me!
Carob tree grows everywhere. We have it in morocco, almost in every city. Morocco has plains, desert, montagnes where it snows...carob can grow almost everywhere, and never seen carob fruits being sold. You just go where you can find a carob tree and you help your self.
You rock! I had no idea all the benefits and I’ve been eating it like you do without knowing that was the correct way I just did it kind of naturally thank God! We have so many carob trees around Israel it’s amazing!! And I had no idea it was a fruit! Thank you so much for this very very informative video. God bless you!
The carob trees are dioecious, so there are male and female trees. Both are needed for pollination and fruit to be produced on the female trees. The tree mentioned (at 6:12) to be sterile may be a male tree, which does not bear fruit (though he says " it rarely makes any fruit"). Wonderful video! :)
I was today years old when I realized that this tree only grows in the Levant, to the extent that Jews in Europe requested from the Jewish relatives living in Israel, to bring them this fruit. So now I am just amazed and eating this Carob fruit, a friend got it for me and said it was one of the sweeter he tasted. this fruit tastes a bit like honey.
Hi, I grew up eating Carob pods back in Malta and now have one growing at home in Australia. Really good to munch on and live stock love them as well. I also make a syrup from the pods which is good to cook with and make hot drinks. One thing is that you need to grow a self pollinating variety the Santa fe is a perfect choice. Cheers
i just found a carob tree in sacramento downtown, i ate several pods, however i think they are from last year as there are green ones on the tree now.......so i bet the fresher the chewier and softer and better, but these ones are good!!!!!!!!!! so now i'm looking up carob trees on youtube and HI ( :
Wow, great video! I just half heartedly looked up if carob was edible for humans after hearing about it being a dog substitute for chocolate for the first time. I had no idea cacao was toxic for humans or that healthy cacao fruit or carob fruit even existed! I absolutely LOVE chocolate and want to try both now! This video was very educational and helpful! Thank you for sharing!
To be fair though, anything is toxic in the right quantity. There are many things that have been shown to provide benefits in small doses but can kill or maim in larger doses. Notably, all fat soluble vitamins fall into this category. Toxicity in these cases largely depends on the amount of time a substance stays in your body and for cacao the "main toxic components are the methylxanthine alkaloids theobromine and caffeine. Humans can easily digest and excrete methylxanthines, the half life of theobromine being 2-3 hours." taken from the national institute of health website. Whereas the same article states dogs take 18 hours or more to process it, which is why it is easier to build up a toxic amount.
All chocolate is toxic, but carob is the healthiest. Carob still has tannins (which is addictive. Less than 17% in the seed) in it, but the fruit has far less (less than 3%). It is carcinogenic (cancerous) and an astringent (shrinks the flesh so that blood cannot pass through) and so is not 100% good for the heart. But the body should be able to cope with it as an occasional treat.
When I was growing up we had a tree in our school, and we used to throw them at each other. I had 0 idea it was edible. I now started eating products with carob, it is so good!
what i did was cut the tips of these seeds off and soaked them until the seeds expanded. then, i placed them in a planting medium and it conjured up a seedlings. i have 3 now. i noticed, out of all the seeds that i have germinated, i learned to make sure there are no snails in the pot because they seem to be attracted to these seedlings. these seeds are very easy to grow if you either poke a hole into the seed or snip the very very tip off one side.
A fingernail clipper works good to snip a tiny hole in the hard brown shell, this lets the water in so the seed sprouts faster. I do suggest snipping the fat round end so that the germ (located in the pointy end) does not get damaged. Another way to sprout them is just wrap the whole seed (snipped or unsnipped ) in a moist paper towel and put it into a sealed ziplock baggy, then put the baggy on top of a high shelf in your home where it is warm. But it will take a few weeks longer to sprout if the seed is not snipped.
It is designed to take fast advantage of scant rainfall. It is a desert survivor seed. I plant them as they are and they sprout as fast as beans. I have only needed to clip lotus seeds and aquatic plants to get germination. Personally that rapid germination has been always easy with Carob bean seeds for me and the seedlings grow fast. Just By Planting in Soil Directly Like Beans.
hey, i moved to Siliqua in Sardegna, the town is named after the latin name for carob... we've been working hard in the garden & in the north corner there is a bi big big carob tree... tomorrow i'm gonna start using these babies!... thanks for the info
i have amonster sized carob tree infront of my house maybe 40feet southern cali but i never tried cooking them or eating. ive chewed on some of the ripe ones it tastes kinda sweet but it gives you cotton mouth dries ur mouth weird feeling
When they grind up carob to make powder (in large scale operations) do they include the seeds? I hope not but I’m guessing they likely do.. I think I will try some anyways though.. It sounds so tasty, maybe one day I can grow a carob tree here in CA :)Thanks for the cool video!
There are carob trees already growing near parks and hiking trails in CA. The natives used to eat carob. You can still find the trees sometimes at preserved locations where natives used to live in CA. There are reserved lands for natives that are not open to the public though, where Native Americans still live in the way of their people. So make sure you find a location that’s not private property. There are many Heritage parks in CA though, where you can find all kinds of foods the natives used to eat.
i heard that st. john the baptist came eating "locusts and honey..." and that these locusts are NOT bugs but carob pods,,,,, and that the carob trees other name is LOCUSTA.....
There is a carob tree near us and we would like to harvest the pods this Sept-Oct when ready to be picked but cannot find info on how to grind them, since you noted the seed inside is hard, do we remove them and then grind the rest of the pod?
Yes the seeds are too hard to grind. If you plant the seeds they sprout faster than anything else. Use any food processer or coffee grinder after popping out the hard seeds
Carob is eaten to celebrate Spring and the blooming of the trees. All over the world, Jews buy this special fruit and recite a blessing on eating the fruit for the first time in the new year agricultural year. We used to call it boxer. In Hebrew it is called haruv . Many blessings are tied directly to the agriculture of the land of Israel. For instance- every seventh year when the land is not to be worked but must rest.
⌈The Book of Enoch That tree is in height like the fir, and its leaves are⌉ like (those of) the Carob tree: and its fruit is like the clusters of the vine, very beautiful: and the fragrance of the tree penetrates afar. 5. Then I said: '⌈How⌉ beautiful is the tree, and how attractive is its look!' 6. Then Raphael the holy angel, who was with me, answered me ⌈⌈and said⌉⌉: 'This is the tree of wisdom, of which thy father old (in years) and thy aged mother, who were before thee, have eaten, and they learnt wisdom and their eyes were opened, and they knew that they were naked and they were driven out of the garden.'
Are there trees which flower pods that are similar to carob pods? Because in my school in Australia we have a lot of smallish, skinny looking trees and during the winter it flowers pods that look almost identical to the carob. Are these pods carob or just some random tree??
I noticed in the Las Vegas Parks there are similar trees, but I am not sure if it is a carob. Any suggestions how to identify if it is carob? I am afraid to poison my self :)
They planted alot of carob trees in Las Vegas a hundred years ago. There are some still alive around and some are now being planted in fancy edible landscaping there. It might be worth grabbing the big smooth flat pods and taking them to a person from the middle east and asking. They are really good for you.
I know this is an old video, and maybe somewhere in the comments this has already been mentioned... but I wanted to mention that the trees are often male or female, as well as hermaphroditic. So the tree that is flowering but not producing must be a male. Nothing wrong with it, just a pollen producer only. My neighbours, who provided me with the seeds to start my own trees, have a hermaphroditic tree.
Interesting! That actually makes a lot of sense. I was worried from the video description there might be some genetic issues with the carob plants. Thank you for sharing!
Amazing info......................in pakistan these beans simply lies along side the roads . because no one knows there importance. these are thought be waste.

Carob is addictive, once you taste the first yummy pod you won't be able to stop eating more, high in calories and make you gain weight very fast Also the tree is very big and messy, unless your garden is half hectare or more forget the idea of planting one
There is a difference between addictive properties in something and a lack of self-control, which is gluttony. Carob contains no addictive properties and no it does not make you gain weight unless you consume ridiculous amounts of it. It is a low-calorie food. Let’s not spread misinformation.
We have it in Bahrain but no one knows it’s edible. I always looked at it when I was a kid in my school and the smell was very tempting and I really wanted to eat it, they told me it’s a food for camels lol so sad
I believe all your info., Thanks, keep in touch. One question: Don't you need to clean and possibly "not" eat the pod, part (the outer shell???) Thank you, the inside looks delicious!! Thanks for the contact info. where to order them, too!!
Carob syrup: chop 1 kg of carobs in small pieces and cover with water for 24 hrs. Boil for 2 hrs and let cool. Squeeze and filter the water, reboil and add 1 kg of brown sugar stirring gradually.
