Meet me at the Architecture + Design Film Festival (adfilmfest.com) for the screening of my short film, A Choice to Make on Saturday November 4, 2017...show starts at 3:30pm...
My background is in Finance along with all my degrees. Do you hold a degree? if not whats the best way to break into this market. If so, do you have any recommendations on programs. I love design and architecture and I'm think about going for my M.Arch? Mentorship?
Where can we find this film? And I just want to say I love watching your videos ... You're a gem. It's funny to think that you're just uploading videos, but sometimes it changes people's lives on what they're doing .
This was an Inspiring video, as an architecture school drop-out from many years ago I went on to become a graphic designer and photographer via Fine Art. I still have architecture in my DNA and am still totally inspired by it. So it was reassuring to see that a famous person like Charles Eames made this part of his creative journey, an integral part of who he was. I also like that he saw no creative boundaries in the work he produced together with Ray.
This comes in my mind: "stay hungry, stay foolish" (Steve Jobs) “You must be shapeless, formless, like water. When you pour water in a cup, it becomes the cup. When you pour water in a bottle, it becomes the bottle. When you pour water in a teapot, it becomes the teapot. Water can drip and it can crash. Become like water my friend.” (Bruce Lee)
"there was no work life balance...work was their life, life was their work.....the world was their canvas".....this would be a lifetime inspiration for me
The opening was very inspiring! Sometimes we are just focus on one thing, one field of work, when there is a world of creative possibilities to explore. Also congratulations on your film recognition! Looking forward to seeing all the great things you create in the future as well!
Awesome that your film was selected . . .Even more awesome is the recognition of others, albeit architecture dropouts, for their energy, pulse and contribution through all those venues you highlighted . . . What an amazing discipline. . . .a combination and love of art (although for some of us that is why we draw . . .because we can't paint), design, innovation and creativity . . .
Thank you for this. I'm also a dropout and i'm now finding my way back to architecture as an amateur. It's a whole new world to me, but I think it's worth it. Really inspiring video
Thank you for this video and congratulations on your ADFF video submission! This is a great video for architects and designers no matter what level. I recently started studying architecture and when I am in the studio doing models or drafting, I often don't know quite what I'm doing. Each new model presents a different or new element and sometimes it feels like I have to "fake it" until I make it, but I'm always learning and designing.
You’re amazing, you’re so professional and entertaining. Please don’t stop what you’re doing as you help me and fair share of people with their architecture studies and life. Best of luck
Congratulations on the recognition of your film in such a prestigious venue. And as others have expressed so well, thanks for sharing your passion for design with all of us that subscribe to your channel and carefully read what you have published. In all of your endeavors, it is clear to see your abiding pursuit of excellence. Charles and Ray would be pleased to be the example of your message today.
Congrarutulations Eric, really glad your video made to the final 30! I must say once more that the short film you made inspired me in many ways, so does the work I get to see in your chanel each week. Not afraid to call you a role model. Greetings from México!
Nice to see what inspires you Eric and how you pass that on to inspire others. Congrats and good luck on Saturday!! Sadly Im based in London so will miss the chance to meet you but I hope lots of people turn up to support you !!
If your free please DM me I’d love to meet you in person and thank you for all your help and inspiration. If not have a nice holiday and a definitely recommend checking out the serpentine pavilion while your over here
Inspiring video once again. The spirit of being a lifelong learner is something the best architects have and I plan on developing. Good luck on the screening. Thanks again!
Hey Eric, This is such a great short content. I love it. This will help alot of us that feel like amateurs. keep inspiring. Sorry i will not be able to make it to New York to see you - i live in Manchester, United Kingdom. Good Luck With your film and be kind to all your fans who will be coming to see you.
Thanks for you videos. They are really inspired. I’m an amateur architect of sorts. I’ve done a dance hall, candles, industrial residential conversions; I keep it pretty simple and economical and I make a living. I’m mad about Fusion 360 and love Revit too. I got a builders certificate so I could build my own stuff professionally. This video helped me see a future path for my work. Thanks and looking forward to seeing the film.
I really needed this. Your channel is amazing. I’ve been going back & forth with the idea of whether I should pursue Architecture or if I should take an AutoCAD certification class so that I can learn the program. I don’t want to be limited and I would love to design any and everything I can. I learn every possible thing I can about what I’m interested in in the moment lol ...my family is really big on education & they just want me to get a degree.
appreciate the kind words...just remember: your education is for you, not your family... AutoCad certification and Architecture are very different things, one will be a repetitive vocation (fine for some, not judging), the other one with much more depth and nuance. i think now more than ever the ROI on a college education is questionable...but what's difficult to quantify about it are the connections you'll make, the growth and learning, the responsibility it forces upon you and, the professors you'll be influenced by along the way. there are very few that i think of as role models or people that have changed the course of my life and (aside from family) they're all teachers. I think a college education ultimately provides more optionality in life and optionality - for me - has been the key to making my own way. good luck...whatever you choose, make it right for you...
30X40 Design Workshop Thank you for your response! I’ve been to college already majoring in business marketing. I agree it was a great experience for meeting people. I just really hate the idea of spending money I don’t have & I just wanna learn! I’ve spent many years just trying to figure out my niche. I don’t want to be consumed with trying to become an architect when really what I should be doing is industrial and commercial design or just drafting. I feel like things really aren’t so simple anymore. There are so many options of careers that one can pursue & so many ways to get there. I recently heard someone say (can’t remember who) if you’re looking for someone to tell you what to do then you don’t know who you are but in times like this (social network & plastic surgery) you can be anything you want or believe yourself to be. - anyway, I say ALL THAT to say do you think it’s best to find a job in these particular careers first? Do you think it would be beneficial to have a portfolio even though I don’t have a degree in architecture or anything close...could I be considered?
Beautiful message!!, i'm industrial engineer but i also like everything related to design and construction(my father is an awesome civil engineer), sometimes i think that there's no reason or time, or both to try other things apart from my career, that's why i find this message so beautiful and useful.
Eric you are an inspiration hub.. I wish someday I could visit your studio and you. You are amazing. God bless you. Love and respect to you and to your work from Bangladesh.
Licensed architects are usually against unlicensed practice even they have actually learned a lot from unlicensed, mostly self-taught architects....F. L. Wright, Tadao Ando, Mies Van der Rohe, Le Corbusier, ...... And, No, it is not the same thing to be a doctor without a degree (or license). Btw, from the beginning, I doubt you are a kind of self-taught until you said you have passed through the architectural school :). Your approach is so old school in many ways and indicates you as pure talent at the same time. Your channel completely obsessed my mind. All this video told us much much more than I have ever heard from university teachers at all. Thanks a lot for every single video. It completely influenced me.
I look just like my thumbnail, but larger. Congrats on being selected. I'm sure there were many worthy entries making it a difficult decision for them. That shows how well rounded your work is, and how important the details you provide matter.
Congrats Eric! Well deserved. Truly inspiring to watch your hustle and learn from you over the past 2 years. Hope to meet and chat with you one day. Cheers
story of my life... Many thanks for your insights. Great videos, rarely found on internet. I studied civil engineering. never practiced it though. I am self taught in the work I do now, interior-graphic-video. Therefore, so encouraging this video, when there is no firm to get encouraged from.
congratulations on the film thank you for your videos Im an art architecture and design fan Im from El Salvador where this type of knoledge doesnt exist thanks again your videos teach and inspire and provide new valuable information to me thanks again
what an inspirational video Eric, thank you once again. I’ll be monitoring your film and the festival with much enthusiasm from over here in Spain and wish you the very best of luck.
"I always wanted to 'say' I was an architect." - George Costanza "Architect" is in my job title, but I design software systems instead of homes and buildings. Eric has inspired me to rediscover sketching. Who knows, maybe I'll design my next home.
I am an arch school drop out, and I find your videos inspiring, especially this encouragement to explore our ideas as amateurs. I'll be glad to stay in touch. Check my insta @Bell_Road_Gardens
Love your videos! Thanks to you I was able to create a website for my portfolio and got an internship in a couple of hours as well as a lot of feedback! Congratulations and good luck! Sadly I am based in Turin, Italy but I would have loved to get the chance to meet you!
Thanks so much for sharing your insights and knowledge with us out here. This video struck a cord. I am a fine artist painting mostly in oil but i explore other mediums too. I was offered an opportunity to work on architectural drawings by a local hardware company and I'm jumped at the offer because well art and design, I love it no matter which form it is in. What I'm searching for is a video of how to transform blueprints into an architectural drawing. Would you be able to point me to a video that will help me figure this out. I have drawn three samples so far but they are not good...fail, fail, fail but in these failures I am learning something. Any pointers in the right directions would be gratefully recieved. 🏯⛩🏡

The fact the word Amateur has its origins in meaning somebody who does something 'for the love of it' says it all. Contrats on the film.
