Awesome performance Joe! And testimony to the quality of Brompton bikes, essentially quality bikes for commuting! Are they aware of you having ridden one to the top of Alpe d’Huez and back? Overtaking a car and lorry! Brilliant! Thanks for sharing, mate! Glad you can enjoy riding up and down on the BMW this week! Cheers, Tom
Thanks -- very impressive. Afraid I would not make it without a mountain drive -- and quite a bit of training. Well done -- and thank you for making the video.
Joe, total star! Just watched the ride again. The hills in Cork scare me! Defo on my bucket list.... and to think Chris Froome ran up it. Cheers Keith 😉
amazing! your brompton must have been tweaked to extreme performance! first time I watched a folding bicycle go down at speed and hold together. a triumph for british bicycle engineering! and extreme rider skill!
For some reason this made me think of Aviation Hill in Kodiak, AK, where I lived as a child. It was a long hard trudge up the hill pulling my sled behind me but swooshing down was glorious!
Extremely impressive Joe, The Alpe is a such an inspiring climb with beautiful scenery all around, which helps a little bit when the going gets tough. The first few km's are a killer though!...
Thanks for a great video which gives me a good idea of what to expect as this is on my bucket list. Bromies are great little bikes - one of mine goes everwhere I travel. Yes I also wonder what what were the thoughts of the occupents of the car lol.
So ... I have no reason to fear this climb on a carbon road-bike with a compact chainset and a dinnerplate cassette then :) What a mad one you are. Certainly way out of the regular terrain of a brompton
Hi Joe, love your channel. Had no idea you were a cyclist. I'm looking to buy my first Brompton but I'm scoffing at the cost. Are they really worth it? I really don't care they're welded in London, just means the welds are filled with bitterness! Aren't the stock components bargain bin plastic from China? Cheers
Joe...have been an avid fan of your car reviews (especially BMWs - influenced my purchase of a '19 230i xDrive). My wife and I are considering getting bikes and particularly interested in folding bikes for ease of transport. Would you recommend the Brompton or have other suggestions? Have you experienced the Brompton electric which I understand is soon to come to the U.S.? Thanks much..that was quite a ride down ;-)
Hey guys, great to hear and thanks for the support! I've not tried the electric Brompton yet, but I can vouch for their regular bikes being massively well build and over engineered, mum has ridden Bromptons for over 25 years now, she will never ride anything else 👌
Thanks for the vid!! Question on the kosuac carbon wheels...are you aware of anybody putting a 5 speed sturmey hub on there? I keep getting told it is not compatible...just wondering if it is worth ignoring the good advice and trying anyway :) Cheers...
Thank you! I have spent some time with titanium forks and rear triangles, they ironically provide a better ride quality, but flex too much for my 105kg weight, I think they would be more beneficial to those under 80kg maybe. Cheers
@@JoeAchilles1 ah, ok. It's true: my wheigt is 72kg, as usual. Now, I've just passed under Covid19 and I'm 68 kg. I have to eat a lot in the next months!!! 😆😆😆
Fantastic footage their Joe, very challenging & inspiring. Did you cut the length of the JK Bars down or was it kept at the original length of 600mm? What would you recommend between these and say a riser bar for an S type Brompton for comfort, I'm 6ft 4" tall, so have long arms! Cheers
Did you have to modify the gear ratio of your Brompton at all? If I'm not mistaken, a standard 6-speed brompton has a low gear ratio of only 1.8 (at -12% option) which is still very high even for Tour de France riders on that hill.
dtmateo I actually talk briefly about my gearing whilst taking a break at the top, I had a 2 tooth bigger chainring compared to standard, so actually closer to a high ratio 6 speed, it was hard work... Cheers
It takes a very British brand of craziness to do this on a bike like that! At one stage I wondered if you'd sped the descent video up but then concluded that you have....commitment 😀 Great vid and thanks for sharing. BTW, how were the brake pads after that?
Gavin Hall Sorry mate just seen this! Haha yeah I'm a little mental when it comes to bikes, I get more adrenaline on them than I do in cars... Incredibly the brakes didn't really heat up much and the pads were totally fine, think the long straights in between each corner helped cool them and just sitting up in the wind prior to each corner acted like a parachute 😂👌

Cheers buddy, was a great experience for sure!

Box Hill, Surrey is my limit on a Brompton. Amazing, well done.

Discovered after your cycle surgery pod cast - need to do this myself someday soon - not on a Brommy though! Great achievement - well done Joe

+Gary Patag Haha thanks Gary, gonna set myself a much bigger challenge next year so watch this space :-)
Chapeau Joe!
Holy Crap, Batman!! After watching that descent, I'm gonna have to change my shorts! That was one helluva ride, Joe! You are one helluva bloke! Wow!!
Hahahaha cheers man! The awesome decent made the painful climb 100% worth it 👌
Wow what an amazing climb! Thanks for sharing the video! Truly impressive!
Thanks for showing the potential of my Brompton, Joe. Just need to grow some...to follow your led.
For some reason this made me think of Aviation Hill in Kodiak, AK, where I lived as a child. It was a long hard trudge up the hill pulling my sled behind me but swooshing down was glorious!
Awesome video. As a former pro downhiller you made the decent look easy, overtaking a truck and car; brilliant.
Extremely impressive Joe, The Alpe is a such an inspiring climb with beautiful scenery all around, which helps a little bit when the going gets tough. The first few km's are a killer though!...
Brilliant, good job mate, on all fronts!!!
56t chainring!! Usual 13/16t at rear? I run a 54/13 3spd setup - chapeau for such a fun ride.
I've climbed this virtually on Zwift, so was fun to see the actual climb. What a thrill ride on the way down, not sure I trust my brakes that much! 😂
Amazing feat, that descent on a brompton must have been scary!
Thanks for a great video which gives me a good idea of what to expect as this is on my bucket list. Bromies are great little bikes - one of mine goes everwhere I travel. Yes I also wonder what what were the thoughts of the occupents of the car lol.
Inspirational ascent! Terrifying decent! Bravo!
+Mark Foltz Haha Cheers man
Passing a car going downhill. Wow!
Great work Joe
Your rims must've gotten so hot on the decent because of the brakes! Great video!
Chapeau sir... one handed. I could not have done that! Great video...
+Jim Clayton Cheers man
Everyone saying you have inspired them to take on hills. I won't say the same because it's hard work on a folder! However I will say bloody well done
Amazing, you inspires me a lot! I hmv more passion to pursue my dream
So ... I have no reason to fear this climb on a carbon road-bike with a compact chainset and a dinnerplate cassette then :)
What a mad one you are. Certainly way out of the regular terrain of a brompton
holly crap..... at this speed with just one hand on a Brompton....
Sandro2746 That would be difficult. Fortunately Joe has 2 hands.

Thanx man! that was really cool.
+Emil “KNÅDA” Eklöv Thank you!
Awesome video, thank you!

+Richard Koch My rear wheel has the Sturmey hub on it, so yeah its 100% possible :-)
Great effort mate!
Cheers man 👍
Joe Achilles
what route/start point did you do?
Those little wheels must have been spinning fast...flew past a car easily!
Nice video. Have you ever mind to upgrade you Brompton with Titanium rear and fork?
Thank you! I have spent some time with titanium forks and rear triangles, they ironically provide a better ride quality, but flex too much for my 105kg weight, I think they would be more beneficial to those under 80kg maybe. Cheers

Joe Achilles keep riding. you inspired me to tackle more hills with my folding bike.
I can just about imagine me doing the climb on my Brommie..but the descent? No thanks.
Haha thats the fun bit!
