what would be odd would be if she talked with a deliberately contrived accent. Most singers use different accents when they sing, she just has vowel modification cranked a couple of notches higher than some, because it's a sound that feels right to her I'd guess. I like the sound of it too, so I think she's right.

The other two artists she says she's influenced by are two of Jolie's friends from Portland, Oregon: Stefan Jecusco, a musician and artist who built Jolie's violin (out of wood from an old door), has a band called Ginggang, did the illustrations for 'Escondida' and turned her on to Daniel Johnston; and Jason Leonard, who composes and plays atmospheric music, has a band called Loch Lomond (which Jolie can't pronounce!) and has contributed to a radio show in Portland. They both have MySpace sites.

Jeff played golf at a course in Scotland years ago called Loch Lomond. He thought it was super-duper neat and beautiful!

What are the names of the two other artists she says she's influenced by besides Will Oldham, D. Johnston and Syd B.?
    I can't hear what she's saying.
    Thanks!

ugh, unfortunately i agree! this reminds me of two college girls mock-interviewing themselves for when they're famous. where's the jolie who wrote all the songs i love?

I think the point was that it doesnt matter how you clasify music, who cares? i certainly dont.
Its all irrellevant when your listening to it what bracket it comes under, i think her response was entirely justified.

@cybershane There's a clear edit in the interview. It seems like she's gone and described who she listens to now. I.e, "I listen to Will Oldham all the time".
Btw, why so angry? A few deep breaths and it will pass...

Very appropriate word. I am taken aback. In her defense, she is a feeler, and therefore is probably frustrated when asked to enumerate lists of her favorites. She likes certain things. (Period.) Moreover, I think her insipidity is partially her natural response to what she feels are tedious questions. But yes, she's not exactly an inspiring character, a fact only exacerbated by uninspiring impositions.

Exactly how I feel. :( The upswing in her voice at the end - like the statement suddenly turned into a question. Drives me fucking insane. Say it ain't so. lol @ "and such as"

Rachel Bloomfield She either doesn't like being interviewed or simply wasn't in the mood for this one. That time of the month.Incidentally someone commented on her speaking voice being quite different from her singing voice. That's pretty common with folk singers from the south who usually try to dial up the twang. I heard an interview with Iris DeMent whose singing is as hillbilly as all get out but when interviewed sounds like she's from California. It's an affectation that gives them a unique sound. As soon as you hear a song sung by Holland you know who it is.

goes to show...not all who can play 6 instruments, make brilliant, nuanced, poignant music are particularly eloquent (or polite for that matter) when not singing. Oi, Jolie, this interview isn't painting you in a particularly good light. Agreed. Really wish I hadn't seen this interview.

Funny I've watched two interviews and Jolie was rude as hell both times, and both times everyone blamed the interviewer. She's got to get over herself and realize these people have a job to do. And well, that they're people. If she believes she's above their questions then she should simply stop showing up to answer them. The questions aren't original? Perhaps if they were asked in an annoying accent it would give them more originality? Humble thyself, please.

Gotta agree with a lot of the comments on here. This interview is brutally awful. A shade away from embarrassing. Come on now, you're not Charlie Rose. I was halfway waiting for this question: "So, you're, um, so totally awesome. How did you get so awesome?"

That interviewer was really amateurish. Quoting other people's opinions and then simply asking what someone thinks about the quote is lazy journalism.

The person giving the interview here did not do enough research and sounds like a fool. It makes sense that Joli had an attitude towards her.

@@HYPNOTICVIDEO I guess...I was only saying that the interviewer deserves it here though. I would have had an attitude also.

This is a terrible and embarrassing interview. Its mostly sad, that the interviewer lacks the depth to ask a single interesting question. And she clearly does not, um, get what Jolie Holland is trying to do with her music. Jolie Holland is a poet. And If anything, I feel like Jolie was being nice to her. Being asked insipid question is tiring even to layfolk. Overall it was brutal - don't send a 24 year old to do a serious job if s/he hasn't the chops to do it right.

Classifying, sticking a musician, especially a very unique one like Jolie Holland is such a bore- I once had the manager of a record store move Leonard Cohen from Easy Listening, right next to Perry Como! We stood like dorks each clutching a handful of CDS surveying the bins- well, where did the great performer end up- haphazardly plunked into TWO sections, I was annoyed and annoying the manager to! Rock and folk? Or ALTERNATIVE- that one really bugs me! So it is with a wonder like Jolie Holland- if the store even stocked one of her titles- nope! SPECIAL ORDER! But I wanted it for a gift, a friend's birthday day after tomorrow- Namaste

Sometimes, it's just nice to be turned on to new music from an artist you like when he/she tells you their loves or influences. Because we're all human and love to connect and share our passions.

love the music, but this video was a waste of 3' 27" of my time. I'm sure that she is really worth a decent indepth interview but this wasn't it.
Be careful of Daniel Johnston, a man with that much mental health concerns becoming aware of his own 'genius' is in danger of losing his 'gift'.
