Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse | The Film Score with Daniel Pemberton | "Start a Band"
/ sonyanimation
It makes me so happy to hear a composer talk so extensively not just about his craft and how he did it but also how actively he thinks of story and how to color the scene and help aid the storytelling. Filmmaking is a collaborative art and to hear artists emphasize how they're all working to help elevate and tell a story and not just be auteurs and narcissistic is wonderfully refreshing in a business that right now seems to want to kill art and sell the parts for pennies.
It’s honestly beautiful to think about. So many great artists coming together to help create one phenomenal piece of art. This is humanity.
A masterpiece
This man deserved to be nominated for an Oscar
He did win the golden globe for his work on this movie! Unfortunately it did not get nominated for original score for this year's Oscars, I have no idea why.
@@kermitthehusk4278 He did not, only nominated.
@@hoanganhvo7874 damn that's rough
Yeah, instead of American Fiction. That was a fairly generic jazz score.
This is a masterpiece
This is a masterpiece of a modern score Daniel was robbed
A shame this movie wasn't nominated for Best Original Score. The music in this film is incredible.
I thought it should’ve won. I was taken back when I heard it wasn’t even nominated.
“It’s not rocket science. Everything we did in hindsight was just oh of course. “ as he literally has created a Hans Zimmer level score
Zimmer is a corporation who doesn't do much actual composing these days. He creates a sort of mood tape and an army of "Zimmerlings" do the work to turn it into an actual score, and he just signs off on it
@@barndoor8628 This ^^^
@@barndoor8628 Kinda sad tbh, Hans Zimmer should be a band label at this point. Does Hans Zimmer at least credit them? I hope so and not purely ghostwriting (something I find in poor taste).
Also any other ghost-(artist) as well is poor taste. I like to believe I hold a great value on “cite the source and credit the craft”.
he has tonsof ghost writers@@corrinflakes9659 but at least it pays well i suppose
This is one of those few tracks that’ll get you pumped to face the future no matter in what point of time or space you are in
Such a rare quality to have
@SonyAnimation please pin this🙏
I wish there were more of these ost breakdowns. As someone who's very much into making music, its both inspiring and fascinating to watch these.
I'm very glad we get to see behind the curtain in more modern film scores
May I suggest you watch the RUclips video on the ost of Killer Instinct (2013) if you haven't already (ruclips.net/video/RYg1qdXm4Og/видео.htmlsi=C8zHoJNOqpuZpVFJ)? Mick Gordon does a thorough breakdown of a lot of the songs he worked on for the first two seasons of the game, and it is such a facinating watch.
Totally agree. I would would a video like for every song from this OST.
This track was one reason I rewatched the movie in cinema multiple times. So powerful and colorful.
Ps: I would’ve never known Daniel screamed in the track 😂
Broo! Same, I had to see that ending scene for myself. I immediately when to look for the track when it was over.
He did a amazing job at the end.❤❤❤
To me it kind of sounded like a wounded animal the first time I listen it to it, it makes sense that it came from actual screaming.
I thought it was whales 😂😂
I love how ****ing psyched he looks playing this back. When he gets to the sections where lots of sounds and motifs are coming together, he's so (DESERVEDLY) proud of himself.
For sure! I got hyped just watching him talk about it 😂
it makes me wanna sit in a room with him and just yap about this movie’s soundtrack 😂
Across The Spiderverse has the best original music score I've ever heard. And Start A Band is the best piece of music ever scored here. I've been listening to it all year. Everyone's been obsessed with Miguel O'Hara's theme, but for me, Start A Band is the best
For everyone Start a band is masterpiece.
It's just the best thing I ever listened.
You know what I didn't recognise its peakness for the First time but when I heard it for second time, at that time I became a fan of Daniel
the music at the end is the only reminder of the true hype I felt when the movie was ending. "wait waitWAIT, ITS ENDING!!! WAIT!"
Falling Apart and Start a band are two of the greatest scores of all time.
@@EternityFandom me personally, gwen and pav's theme + Indian Teamwork
So true, nueva york train chase and the intro with Gwen are some of the best things I’ve heard in this movie too
Look. I love Ludwig Gorranson's work. Oppenheimer is a great score but maaaaaaan Daniel created a world that swallows me whole everytime I hear ATSV soundtrack. Every sound makes me relive all the excitement I felt watching the movie. Hope Daniel gets the Oscar this year
😢 not even nominated
@@maxssoundtracks3867 yeah, I know, right🙈
It should’ve been Daniel Pemberton to get nominated instead of John Williams
@@donuts6498 Couldn't agree more!! Williams' score wasn't nearly as memorable as Pemberton's score! Nor was it as groundbreaking!
@@donuts6498 obviously
It's a crime this guy and his team didn't get an oscar nomination for this score
I absolutely agree. He deserved it.
This track slaps SO HARD! Easily one of the highlights of the entire soundtrack!
Slapping people is bad tho
@@TheNaturalGamer1 Kilometers Immorales is a the prowler😂
BEST MOVIE EVER. BEST MOVIE SCORE. BEST CHARACTERS. BEST STORYTELLING. BEST DIRECTION. BEST EVERYTHING. MOST HYPE CLOSING 5 MINUTES OF A MOVIE AND THE BEST CLIFFHANGER I EVER SEEN 🕸🕸🕸
Yes yes yessssss
fr
I seen someone say it’s the worst movie cuz it got them hyped up then it ended like that was kinda the point 😂😂
💯 agree! I can’t stop watching them! It’s perfect!! All elements are perfrct! It’s almost a religious experience!
RIGHT
You can tell he's so proud of his work here. Both movies have had banger soundtracks.
This man is a genius. He literally composed one of the best movie soundtracks in history.
It's a crime that he wasn't even nominated for this year's Oscars!
This is my favourite track in the movie and honestly one of my favourites of the year. Blew me away, have it on repeat all the time lol
Start A Band is my most listened to track from the soundtrack because it brings so many sounds and themes from the movie and the prowler theme is upgraded too. I love it so much
This man was on my Spotify wrap's top artists.
Impressive composition.
ME TOO!!!
OH MY GOD. ME TOOOOOO
Forget Margot and Greta, how the hell did Daniel not get nominated for best score??
Eh the Oscar’s continuously ignore actual art in favor of more popular pieces
Not even a nomination for this masterpiece.
dude this score was so good that it actually really pissed me off, i have never been so hyped by any song, i have heard songs that make me happier or sadder or angrier or more relaxed or that i overall enjoy more, but never had a song had me this excited to see whats about to happen and then....IT ENDS, IT JUST ENDS, I DIDNT EVEN NOTICE THE TIME PASS SO I THOUGHT WE WOULD HAVE A CONCLUSION, i was so angry, but in a good way, but still extremly angry
He seriously needs to be nominated for the Oscar’s, this film’s score is so perfect
Welp, he is
Pieces like this make me wanna become a composer so badly. Actually hearing all the layers and the thought processes behind a single piece is just so inspiring and cool. Clearly a labor of love for an outstanding final product.
he seems so excited when talking about his craft, you're lucky if you love what you do for a living.
Man this is so cool, seeing a composer talk so passionately about how he’s made this incredible piece of music is something that more movies should do! Easily my favorite score ever, thank you Daniel Pemberton!!
This soundtrack has been in my head for 5 years and now with across the spider verse it’s been in my head even more.
This movie NEEDS to win best original score at the Oscars. This is legitimately one of the most creative movie scores to ever exist, in probably the best superhero movie to ever exist. David Pemberton deserves all the praise in the world for this outstanding achievement in musical storytelling.
Oppenheimer will probably win
Sighhhh
@@theworm7156you must be a time traveler.
@@Jaexvan they haven’t announced the winner yet right? But seriously atsv not getting nominated for best original score is criminal
@@theworm7156it wasn’t nominated 😮?
I hope an Oscar is on the way for Mr Pemberton.
I love the smile he gets on his face while describing elements and how it all comes together, he really seems proud of the work and it is so deserved.
This man seems so passionate with what he’s doing, it’s amazing to watch thank you for the chef d’œuvre you produced !!
Sony, please don’t let this be the final chapter of Miles Morales please let it chatter continue with his story after beyond the spider verse. Don’t let this be the end of Miles Morales.
Sorry to break it to you buddy, but Phil Lord and Chris Miller already confirmed that Beyond is the end of Miles' story
I disagree. Stories should end. You can't keep a content machine going forever with the quality of these two (potentially three) movies. Let Miles rest and not become the next milked to death Avengers series.
@@austin.paquettetrueeee
I do think it’s ok if he makes cameos and stuff too
@@leothepickle Definitely. But I think trying to keep this train going indefinitely is a ticket to disappointment. I'm tired of movies spinning off into crap-tier shows, or movies that try to rekindle the spark of earlier ones.
They made something great here, free of typical Hollywood meddling, and it'll probably be known as the best animated trilogy of all time. Don't soil it with getting executives and investors involved trying to ride that hype and extend it for as long as possible, until everyone gets tired of it and dies with a whimper. Avengers should've ended with Endgame, look at the state of it now.
They should start a new series of movies surrounding Miguel O’Hara. We need an Inheritors saga.
THE MAN
THE MYTH
THE LEGEND HIMSELF
DANIEL PEMBERTON
The idea of him just screaming the living shit into a microphone has me dying.
Easily one of the greatest tracks in a superhero film score I've ever heard in my life. So grateful for the creative effort and genius that Daniel Pemberton brings in the realm of comic book films with his orchestral and musical skills since ITSV and that everyone is recognizing him more
I loved this video so much. It's always so interesting to hear Daniel explain his tracks. I can't unhear him screaming in the score now.
Star a Band partiture is like combining crazy sounds with horror, hip hop, rock with Infinity war vibes but at the same time Avengers and X men vibes, simply something so iconic, emotional and epic, Thank you Daniel, you are definetly a master.
I love seeing how excited Daniel is to talk about his music. He’s so proud of what he’s created, and it shows in his face!
When me my brother and my friend first saw this movie we all said "this doesn't sound like the original prowler theme this one sounds like instead of elephant sounds it's shrieking" and I guess we were right.
This has gotta be my new favourite Spider-Man score
I respect the time, patients, thought, effort, and love, Daniel put in to this masterpiece, it just makes this so much more rewarding .I love the talent he has, and I'm glad they choose him to do the spider-verse score, may god bless him and all the other artistes that understand and put love into this music .I will forever have mad respect for them💯
the fact that Mile's destiny" theme is actually mixed up with spot's theme is amazing...showing how their destinies are intertwined, one created the other, (as the spot returns to their point of creation! @ 20:27) and so they're meant to face each other as hero and villain - Genius!!!!!
I love how last movie, the starting credits theme sounded like a machine starting up and this one had that a bit but with more tensed up music fluctuating and, I’m not explaining this right it’s just soo cool. And the movie kinda loops around now that I think about it…
3:17 yes this

I hope Daniel does a "Neuva York Train Chase" breakdown, that moment is so monumental and I went to the theaters multiple time just to see that scene again and again :]
This song makes me want to fly through the roof! smashing through anything and explode with energy
One of the most FANTASTIC scores ever!! The way everyone's theme comes together at the end absolutely floored me when I first heard it. It's phenomenal
That was a breathtaking score for the climax 🔥
I wish this video never ended. It is a great opportunity to learn from the master himself.
I can’t believe he wasn’t nominated
This film just fucking exceed my expectations and the score is such a highlight. Might be my top of the year. It’s a 4.5/5 for me only because it’s part one of two 😅
daniel pemberton is just amazing at what he does. His score is jaw dropping and its so fun to listen to. What's so cool is that it looks like he totally loves what he created. He talks about this track so enthusiasticly, I absolutely love listening to him speak about the process on making his tracks to the even smallest detail. This track has layers and layers of different sounds that all come together and he managed to make it work, which to me it seems pretty hard to do. Thank you pemberton for this amazing score, i cant wait for what's next.
*truly bone-chilling scream, as if conjured up from the depths of hell* “So that was recorded at Abbey Road”
I love every single detail of this movie . Sooo hyped for part 3🔥🔥🔥
Phenomenal composer. Loved the opening & ending track
I can't think of a better score-to-end credit song in the past decade than "Start a Band" and "Am I dreaming" from Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse
This track in the ending when Prowler Miles gets reveled goes SO HARD!!!🙌🏽🔥🔥🔥🕷️🕸️Best movie of 2023!🤟🏽🕷️🕸️
This is amazing, been searching so long for a proper breakdown of the score and finally it's here - best early chistmas present haha (also I guess "first"...?)
The soundtrack is a masterpiece, I hope they reuse it in the next movie.
I love watching experts passionately talk about their craft. This is always gives me chills, and the bassline makes me want to run through a brick wall 😂.
13:20 18:02 These two parts probably sum up what makes these song/score so amazing. He understands that while he could use these great sounds that he has at his deposition, he knows that this song needs to tell the story as it goes, not the other way around, and he progresses the track to go higher and higher so that it reaches that climax over time but also adds that extra to the storytelling itself. While you might be able to say "yeah that what a normal composer is supposed to do" he was responsible with ending the movie and as he said it himself, is in turn setting up the anticipation for the cliffhanger and is what makes so many people that love this scene, score, and movie excited for what's next in BTSV
From the very first minutes of the movie, the opening with Gwen, the insane bassline and the drum part, I knew I had to buy the Vinyl of this soundtrack.
This video analysis is a gem
Being able to see exactly how the spiderverse sounds and music are made is so satisfying, and it's all because of this legend right here! Thank you, daniel!
Can't wait to see how the music will turn out in beyond the spiderverse!
I've listened to this song so many freaking times. As much as this is a Spider-Verse song, it also feels like a hero's redemption song. Like as if everything bad that has happened, the hero never gives up and finally has that moment where they jump into the fire, only to come out holding the flame in their hand. I love this song so much. Also a good song for writers to help with writer's block lol
This man and the work he did on the score along with Metro are a huge reason why this movie is as good as it is. Not only are the animation and story itself amazing in this movie, but also having a complete soundtracks and score that elevate it to connect emotionally with the audience is what takes it to another level. Props to this man, give him his flowers, it's been the first score that I listen to on a daily basis because of how dang good it is
This is was incredible! I wish he'd speak about Spider-Woman (Gwen Stacy) as well, it's my favourite track.
Behold the Hans Zimmer of animation.
Amen to that
This fucking score absolutely rocks. This shit is next level
Danny Pemberton I love you ♥️🫂 🇲🇽
He def. was the unsung hero of this movie. Kudos to him.
I literally listen to this omw to work. It’s so epic having the Prowler theme, Gwen’s theme, Miles Theme and Spot’s theme all in one. John Pasesano for insomniacs spm, Daniel Pemberton for spider verse, Danny Elfman (Raimi’s spm) and Hans Zimmer for TASM2 imo made the best scores for the spm movies. Ik I left out James Horner and Micheal Giacchino who made iconic spm themes but the other 4 Composers just nailed it 100% spot on for me. I could just listen to the Soundtrack and picture the scene in my head they’re that good.
This is my favorite track from the soundtrack.
Had me jamming.🎶🎶
Oh man, you can't imagine how badly I needed to see this breakdown.
I've been looking for this thing since I first time I sat down to really listen to the soundtrack itself and I'm utterly obsessed and in awe of this particular track among others.
I'm a visual artist but there's something about good music that really strikes a chord for me.
I just want to say thank you to everyone who contributed to making these experiences a reality.
I love you ❤️
Let him cook a full course 🔥🔥🔥🔥
This movie is still amazing of this year
I noticed that scream every time I watched the ending of the movie
Been a fan since LittleBigPlanet on the PS3. All the themes that Daniel Pemberton truly does have its own identity and all are incredible
This guy did the score for LBP!? Makes sense why I loved the first movie and I was floored by the sound design in this one. LBP had a beautiful score.
I had no idea
I loved this track so much, it was my most played song on my Spotify Wrapped
Criminal that the score for this movie wasn’t nominated for the Oscars.
Love this track! Very interesting to seeing the behind the scenes on the soundtracks. Hoping there are more of these for other tracks from the score
my first time watching this movie (on release day in IMAX, obviously) in the intro, something interesting happened to me. I got VERY excited. The score was hyping me up so much. And scaring me ngl. long story short, I had an "excitement panic attack." I realised I was hyperventulating and couldn't feel my hands or feet. yeah... you can imagine how the rest of the film went for me. ESPECIALLY the final scene!!! I'm so glad I'm witnissing the best trilogy ever in real time, wow
As A guy who wants to score as a dream career, I am so happy this video was made. The score is insane and so well done Daniel Pemberton freaking Nailed it.
Music is SO interesting though.
This video is convincing me even more to become a movie composer.
Daniel Pemberton and Metro Boomin cranked the music of the Spider-Verse up to 11 here.
9:00 was hardddddd
Thank God there are still passionate people in this world! 😢❤
Please please please do Right to Remain Silent! Please! That transition in music when Miguel traps Gwen's dad gets me jizzing. Every. Single. Time. It's made listening to the track in public quite difficult 😅 Please Daniel, do this for us! Pleaseeee
THIS IS THE BEST SONG THAT HAS EVER BEEN MADE.
Literally the best moment in the movie, such a heartpumping track followed by the sudden drop of the cliffhanger. I was just jaws open with shock.
Love how he's using Logic with a $140 Native Instruments MIDI keyboard.
this Pemberton guy and Ludwig Gorranson is filling the shoes from legend Hans Zimmer. their sound and music production level is on same level of Mr. Zimmer. the future of film scoring in the safe hands.
this is now my favorite video of all time and it was so informative thank you SO MUCH daniel pemberton u are a genius and i love the energy and passion you have for the music
The Academy needs to start nominating animated films for Best Score again
Give him the nomination ya cowards
Well a lot of people groaned at that cliffhanger, and all I could say was "HELL YA, LET'S GO!"
I'm soooooo hype for this next film, it's been forever since I've been excited for a continuation like this. The score, the animation, the acting, everything was amazing! Only thing I had hoped that didn't happen is this actually coming out in 3D this time around, because the first movie was amazing in 3D.
You guys have officially set the bar for what a movie can accomplish with today's talent and technology, and I am so amped for the finale of this amazing trilogy.
Meanwhile on Abbey Road...
(Daniel Pemberton screaming into a microphone)
From what I'm hearing, this man doesn't need a nomination or reward to tell him his work is stellar, he already feels it. He FELT how good it was while he was making it.
This was the best cliffhanger since 'No Luke, I am your father.' I love this track and have been playing this again and again on my way to work in the car
Peak Music 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Is it too greedy to want this sort of breakdown for basically every track?
Man this song changed my life. It's a musical masterpiece.
