I think one of the biggest insults to the fans in recent memory was the Charlotte/Becky episode of Ride Along. It aired during late 2018 when they were in the middle of their feud over on Smackdown. Now at the start of the episode, the narrative voice-over explained that it "was filmed" prior to Summerslam when they were still friends. He's saying the same things now, but he's learned to express his opinion and present his wisdom without coming off as a needlessly aggressive asshole. That's a good thing.

When he asked the question I tried to come up with my own explanation before hearing his and the best I came up with was "Active Performance Verisimilitude." I also realized that Kayfabe was a bit hard to explain, hence why they made a new word for it. Al respects the craft. I draw a little line between the "Business" of wrestling and the "Craft". “I do magic for the blind for rotary clubs”. Lol. The sad thing is, I don’t think the students know what a rotary club is. Even sadder, they probably didn’t get the joke.
My Grandad was an Honorary Rotarian!! He had been in involved with them since the 70’s and was Club President and Treasurer at one point! Not to mention his work with second-hand books for kids in East Timor and helping with the Rotary Art Show!
I think the movie he is talking about is Commando. In one Scene Arnie chases down Sully (David Patrick Kelly) in his Yellow Porsche and runs it off the road and partially rolls it, he then turns the car back on it's wheels (he is Arnie after all!!) and you see the entire left side i severely dented and paint scraped off. He then drives off with the heroine (Rae Dawn Chow) and the car on the left side is brand new. But aside from that i think Snow is a great wrestler and is fantastic on these shoot videos.
i would love to see kayfabe comeback. If the WWE were smart they would work kayfabe and film all the backstage stuff that they want and save it. Save it until they retire and then release the backstage work when the people are looking for nostalgia. Then they can relive their favorite eras and matches and even have new content that they haven't seen before that will take them right back in time.
@Jt Money of course it's not, in the 30s people cared about wrestling and today they don't.. Face it kid, wrestling is not cool again and it never will be while companies play to a handful of smartmark loyal fans that think they are special for being smart. In the 1980's and 90's we all knew wrestling was fake. We didn't ruin the show because of it though
A lot of people will say that it doesn't matter if you see 2 wrestlers in a fued out together, imagine the night before Starrcade 97 seeing Sting and Hogan downing beers together, or Stone Cold & The Rock the night before WM17.
1:04 Not entirely true. I remember reading the wrestlemania results and even Saturday night main event results in the Boston Globe sport section as a kid in the 80's.
Kayfabe is your gimmick, or in other words, breaking kayfabe would be saying something or doing something that wouldn't make sense for the character that you are trying to be. For example, cm punk's pipebomb is a good example of walking that line of kayfabe where you break the 4th wall, yet still say things that would pertain to your character. "WWE would be better off once vince mcmahons dead". Punk spoke from his heart, but everything he said made sense for the character he was trying to be.
I like his explanation…. Very simply put. However, I would never make fun of professional wrestling. It was part of my childhood and teenage years….kept me entertained. I don’t care about what it actually is. I’m happy I got to see wrestling’s glory days. These men and women of wrestling are very much respected by myself. I remember when Dr. D David Shultz slapped John Stossel. I was shocked that he did that but so happy that he did.
Nothing kills kafabe faster than seeing Sammi Callihan selling his merch next to Wera Loca whom he just piledrived, also selling her merch:-) and the funniest thin, Wera Loca's HUSBAND is standing right there NOT trying to kill Sammi Calilhan. I am NOT trying to blame Sammi for it. He, actually said in character and did his best no to notice any other wrestlers. Of course, any time you see Marty Scurll peddle his wares, it is hard to take him as "The Villain" (real villain doesn't care about fans buying his merch), but you take him as Marty "The Peddler" Scurll.
That's not what i took from what Al said; ".....1938, they stopped reporting results of professional wrestling in newspapers, because the newspapers knew it was fake....." That verbiage to me, means that papers used to print results in the same way they still print football, basketball etc results. I could be wrong, but he didn't seem to say anything about printing it before the match itself (and if that is what is meant.....that kind of goes against everything Al is saying here) Regardless, love the interviews/matches and content you provide - especially anything with Al, he's great :)
When I was a kid I went to a show and got in real early and saw Brad Armstrong and the Spoiler putting the ring together joking around, playing around. My brother and I were like OMG what is going on here....they were the headline at the WEB flea market in Cincinnati Ohio that night. We confirmed our suspicion on that day LOL.
A lot of fans used to think that wrestling was "partially fake." They thought that the wrestlers might have cooperated on some of the moves--but they did not know that it was a complete alternate-reality farce from top-to-bottom.
Al is one of THE BEST trainers the wrestling industry has right now. And i'm not saying that to "mark" out or anything of that nature. Because there are A LOT and i mean A LOT of pricks in this industry who have no problem with taking a kids money and teaching them jack shit...!!! Al TRULY wants his kids to learn this business. So if your going to wrestling school and he happens to be a guest or your even lucky enough to be trained by him. Do yourselves a favor and SOAK UP EVERYTHING he is teaching you...!!! You'll be the better for me in the long run.
Compared to the past today's wrestlers don't sell the finish near as well as,they did in the 60's, 70's, and 80's. Today I rarely if ever see story lines like Dusty/Sullivan, Flair /Funk, I can go on.

Kayfabe is all about maintaining the act and being in character, wrestlers are as much actors as they are athletes.
“I do magic for the blind for rotary clubs”. Lol. The sad thing is, I don’t think the students know what a rotary club is. Even sadder, they probably didn’t get the joke.
They all seem to take everything very literally. They needa loosen up a little
My Grandad was an Honorary Rotarian!!
I'm never gonna try out but this is just awesome stuff.
Holy fucking shit Al Snow looks fucking amazing!!!!!
The St. Louis Post Dispatch reported the results until the early 80's.
The spiderman bit lol I'm dyin here
How am I supposed to take Al Snow seriously whenever he was wrestling a mannequin head on national TV?
Al snow just jacked af lol
Greatest explanation ever
He's right about suspension of disbelief. Seeing a 555 phone number in a movie always takes me out of it.
My left ear loved this video
A lot of people will say that it doesn't matter if you see 2 wrestlers in a fued out together, imagine the night before Starrcade 97 seeing Sting and Hogan downing beers together, or Stone Cold & The Rock the night before WM17.
1:04 Not entirely true. I remember reading the wrestlemania results and even Saturday night main event results in the Boston Globe sport section as a kid in the 80's.
They still put GNW results in the local papers in the majority of the towns we go to.
twice_baked potato That's because Boston was awesome to be growing up as a fan.
barring the shit bunny bit this was great
So much Truth in this.
Hey Al....where is Head these days?
Al explains it all!
He said Spiderman shoots Jizz outta his wrists 😂🤣😂
I like his explanation…. Very simply put. However, I would never make fun of professional wrestling. It was part of my childhood and teenage years….kept me entertained. I don’t care about what it actually is. I’m happy I got to see wrestling’s glory days. These men and women of wrestling are very much respected by myself. I remember when Dr. D David Shultz slapped John Stossel. I was shocked that he did that but so happy that he did.
Al Snow looks better here than he did back in the day!
I've seen wrestling results printed in my local paper.
He's talking about results of matches printed before they actually take place.
That's not what i took from what Al said;
".....1938, they stopped reporting results of professional wrestling in newspapers, because the newspapers knew it was fake....."
That verbiage to me, means that papers used to print results in the same way they still print football, basketball etc results. I could be wrong, but he didn't seem to say anything about printing it before the match itself (and if that is what is meant.....that kind of goes against everything Al is saying here)
Regardless, love the interviews/matches and content you provide - especially anything with Al, he's great :)
Loxxov Voxxol
And that's what I'm saying. I used to cut out the results and carry them around.
Good teacher.
A lot of fans used to think that wrestling was "partially fake." They thought that the wrestlers might have cooperated on some of the moves--but they did not know that it was a complete alternate-reality farce from top-to-bottom.
Anyone that has thought that in at least the last 50 years is "partially retarded".
WE MUST PROTECT THIS HOUSE!
Damn, mid 50's and dude is rock solid.
Kayfabe=protect the business. Duh!
Compared to the past today's wrestlers don't sell the finish near as well as,they did in the 60's, 70's, and 80's. Today I rarely if ever see story lines like Dusty/Sullivan, Flair /Funk, I can go on.
You mean like WWE network airing an episode of Ride Along featuring The Mix and Dolph Zigler right in the middle of their IC title fued
