    I remember watching a PPV in the 90s (I think it was Rock Bottom in Your house, but don't quote me on that unless you can confirm it too.). - In a backstage brawl segment mid-way into the show, in the background you could clearly see the Rock and Mick Foley (unmasked) chilling out with drinks, watching the brawl happen. - Mankind vs Rock was the main event though!! - I was a kid at the time, and I was like "WHAAA?? And like wrestling, the magic industry kept the techniques behind the tricks behind a secretive curtain in order not to ruin the industry and still get bums in seats. People obviously knew it was trickery rather than actual unexplained “magic”, but put it to the back of their minds to be fooled and entertained.
      I’d recommend watching ‘The Prestige’ by Christopher Nolan just as a random recommendation, a fantastic movie about magicians dedicated to the craft that take things too far!

    Al Snow's talks are always great. I've always known that wrestling was a show and not "real fighting/real hate", but it still sucked to go to a wwf show back in the day and see tag teams that were supposed to be having conflict sitting with each other during the show. Even when I played sports as a kid, it was frowned upon to hang out with players on the opposing team during tournaments because we were supposed to get on the ice/field and sell the game... and that wasn't even an act. Maybe some coaches took it too seriously, but I got it.

  • @RyuHayabusa06
    @RyuHayabusa06 7 лет назад +31

    One reason why wrestling has been so successful despite it being fake was because kids didn't know that. The WWF, NWA, WCW, etc all blew up in large part because of kids. Action figures, T shirts, video games, cartoons, etc. for the kids.

    • @davidgriffithsbjjcoach7207
      @davidgriffithsbjjcoach7207 5 лет назад +3

      Erm I knew it was fake but the attitude era and Austin Vs Hart submission match were two of the greatest things I've ever seen.

    • @6steveo9
      @6steveo9 4 года назад +2

      What makes wrestling truly successful is when a promoter, like Vince or Eddie Graham or The Crocketts, find one (or 2 guys if they are lucky) that make the audience say "I know all that other shit is fake but that guy........that guy is real".

    • @ivanvalentin3898
      @ivanvalentin3898 Год назад

      @@6steveo9or the guy is just very charismatic has a great gimmick and sells it properly. Also selling in the ring and match pace is very important. I can't tell you how many times as a kid the matches turned me off because they were too slow and too long. Brett Hart was my favorite as a young boy because of the shades he handed out to kids and he good in the ring. But he bored me while watching his matches. As a kid I didn't understand in ring tactics move sets ECT. Matches would go like this. Wrestler A throws Wrestler B into some hard surface and Wrestler B injures arm. Now I have to s Wrestler A working on Wrestler Bs arm for 10 mins.

    Al Snow explains things great. I wish WWE thought like he did. Yes we know it's a work but that doesn't mean they can't treat it like respect. We know movies are fake but there is a reason The Godfather made more an is more respected than Sharknado. Yes we know it's a work Vince but more people watched and respected wrestlers like Flair, Savage, Hogan, Sting, Vader, Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels than this crap today. I used to get into a feud between Rick Rude and Sting but today I turn on the TV and I see the New Day fighting the Wyatts and it doesn't remind me of a wrestling feud or a movie feud , it reminds of the actors that work on the Disney on Ice tour.

      Thomas Barrett Did you not hear Al's analogy on movie production? It's not about "tricking" people, it is about keeping a certain level of quality in their work. If you watched a movie and saw camera crews and equipment in the background of every scene, surely you would think it's a shit movie.
      Well it's not much different than this. Except the camera crews and equipment are the wrestlers in real life. Keeping their real selves hidden from the show makes the show better.

    I think one of the biggest insults to the fans in recent memory was the Charlotte/Becky episode of Ride Along. It aired during late 2018 when they were in the middle of their feud over on Smackdown. Now at the start of the episode, the narrative voice-over explained that it "was filmed" prior to Summerslam when they were still friends. That's fair enough and it might have flown right over our heads, but the problem was that later in the episode, Charlotte and Becky started talking about the women's Evolution PPV which wasn't even a concept prior to Summerslam! So it was obviously filmed *after* Summerslam after Becky and Charlotte had already started feuding with each other!

    When he asked the question I tried to come up with my own explanation before hearing his and the best I came up with was "Active Performance Verisimilitude." I also realized that Kayfabe was a bit hard to explain, hence why they made a new word for it.
    Al respects the craft. I draw a little line between the "Business" of wrestling and the "Craft". They are related, but not the same. I expect he also respects the business of course, but respecting the craft is what makes an Al Snow over a Hulk Hogan. Hulk understands and respects the business, at least enough to get what he wants, but he doesn't respect the craft, not like guys like Al do.

    I thought I didn't care about off screen interaction, but like he said, I went to a show once and saw a couple tag teams who were feuding at the moment hanging out together before the match. It took me out of the story a little bit, as it would.

    Kayfabe is all about maintaining the act and being in character, wrestlers are as much actors as they are athletes.

    I think the movie he is talking about is Commando. In one Scene Arnie chases down Sully (David Patrick Kelly) in his Yellow Porsche and runs it off the road and partially rolls it, he then turns the car back on it's wheels (he is Arnie after all!!) and you see the entire left side i severely dented and paint scraped off. He then drives off with the heroine (Rae Dawn Chow) and the car on the left side is brand new.
    But aside from that i think Snow is a great wrestler and is fantastic on these shoot videos.

    i would love to see kayfabe comeback. If the WWE were smart they would work kayfabe and film all the backstage stuff that they want and save it. Save it until they retire and then release the backstage work when the people are looking for nostalgia. Then they can relive their favorite eras and matches and even have new content that they haven't seen before that will take them right back in time.

      @Jt Money of course it's not, in the 30s people cared about wrestling and today they don't.. Face it kid, wrestling is not cool again and it never will be while companies play to a handful of smartmark loyal fans that think they are special for being smart. In the 1980's and 90's we all knew wrestling was fake. We didn't ruin the show because of it though

    Kayfabe is your gimmick, or in other words, breaking kayfabe would be saying something or doing something that wouldn't make sense for the character that you are trying to be. For example, cm punk's pipebomb is a good example of walking that line of kayfabe where you break the 4th wall, yet still say things that would pertain to your character. "WWE would be better off once vince mcmahons dead". Punk spoke from his heart, but everything he said made sense for the character he was trying to be.

    I like his explanation…. Very simply put. However, I would never make fun of professional wrestling. It was part of my childhood and teenage years….kept me entertained. I don’t care about what it actually is. I’m happy I got to see wrestling’s glory days. These men and women of wrestling are very much respected by myself. I remember when Dr. D David Shultz slapped John Stossel. I was shocked that he did that but so happy that he did.

    Nothing kills kafabe faster than seeing Sammi Callihan selling his merch next to Wera Loca whom he just piledrived, also selling her merch:-) and the funniest thin, Wera Loca's HUSBAND is standing right there NOT trying to kill Sammi Calilhan. I am NOT trying to blame Sammi for it. He, actually said in character and did his best no to notice any other wrestlers. Of course, any time you see Marty Scurll peddle his wares, it is hard to take him as "The Villain" (real villain doesn't care about fans buying his merch), but you take him as Marty "The Peddler" Scurll.

      That's not what i took from what Al said;
      ".....1938, they stopped reporting results of professional wrestling in newspapers, because the newspapers knew it was fake....."
      That verbiage to me, means that papers used to print results in the same way they still print football, basketball etc results. I could be wrong, but he didn't seem to say anything about printing it before the match itself (and if that is what is meant.....that kind of goes against everything Al is saying here)
      Regardless, love the interviews/matches and content you provide - especially anything with Al, he's great :)

    Al is one of THE BEST trainers the wrestling industry has right now. And i'm not saying that to "mark" out or anything of that nature. Because there are A LOT and i mean A LOT of pricks in this industry who have no problem with taking a kids money and teaching them jack shit...!!! Al TRULY wants his kids to learn this business. So if your going to wrestling school and he happens to be a guest or your even lucky enough to be trained by him. Do yourselves a favor and SOAK UP EVERYTHING he is teaching you...!!! You'll be the better for me in the long run.
