This is the story of my Daddy’s life. Literally grew up one “holler” over from Butchers Hollow. My grandpa worked the coal mines. No shoes in the summer, mail order clothes…. This song is in my DNA.

There’s a movie about her life called “Coal Miner’s Daughter”, starring Sissy Spacek and Tommy Lee Jones that’s excellent!!! She started having babies as a teenager.

When I was a teenager in 1977, I worked at a concert and basketball venue in Lexington Kentucky. Loretta Lynn and Conway Twitty came and did a concert there. I believe the entire population of Butcher Holler, Kentucky, her hometown, was in the audience that night. After the concert, she and Conway sat on the stage at a table and signed autographs and took pictures for over 2 hours. She was the most gracious person who ever sang on that stage.
This was Loretta’s life. Most of her songs were stories of the life she lived.

Loretta Lynn died in 2022 at the age of 90. She was an influential singer/songwriter who, as you may have guessed, wrote about her life. If she and her husband had a fight, she wrote a song about it. They married when she was 14 and she had the first of 6 children when she was 16. Her sister, Crystal Gayle, is also a famous country singer. Crystal is only 73 yo now. Her signature song is "Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue". Country music is very interesting. Most of these songs are about the lives of ordinary people and the hard lives they have endured.

My father-in-law worked in a tire factory...he & his wife raised 9 children...took care of the elderly that had no one....there were times that there were 21 people at the dinner table...their 9 children...the elderly who had come to stay a bit...children that had nowhere to go and themselves...mother in law loved them all...they were a good example to follow...💛

Great Reaction. My mother was a coal miner's daughter, and one of her sisters (my aunt) was named Loretta. My grandfather moved the family away from the mines after three decades. I sometimes think about where I would be if he had stayed. My father was a farmer and we grew nearly everything we ate. Her brother served in Vietnam and retired from the Air Force after 23 years. My childhood was only one step removed from this song.
Great story…. Same values were instilled by my parents. Loretta had a long career with many more hits …. Married at 15 she had 4 children by 20 then began her singing career initially to make a little bit of money to help support her family. She had twins later in her thirties. Her eldest was 12 when she recorded her first album in 1960. She recorded 70 albums was nominated for 18 Grammys had 24 #1 hits on the country charts and 11 #1 albums
Loretta Lynn was my first favorite female country singer back in the 60s. She was definitely the Queen. She and Patsy Cline toured together. Dolly Parton was in the next group of women to follow. Women who grew up poor and wrote about it and made a career from it. They helped to teach me about hard work and dedication (along with my family).
My grandmother was born in Oklahoma's Indian territory in 1902. She attended a 1 room school (only up to 8th grade... unless the child was exceptional) near a creek. After school, she walked to the train station and sold tickets. They washed clothes in that creek.
My grandfather was a drafted WWI soldier who fought in the trenches at Argonne Forest. He was educated, but they made him a private. He nearly died there.
After the war, he went to Oklahoma and got an engineering degree and worked on WPA projects. That's how they met ... at the train station!!!
People were much stronger and determined back then. They didn't complain. They didn't expect everything to be handed to them. They appreciated family and relied on each other.
I wish i could have met my grandfather, but he died fairly young as a result of his time in france in the winter.

Coal Miner's Daughter was a great movie of Loretta's life starring Sissy Spacek in an Oscar-worthy performance. If you haven't seen it, it's worth a look. My Daddy grew up in the country, one of 11 kids farming. Later he was a Firefighter, along with a mechanic and he could fix anything. Sweetest Daddy a girl could ever ask for. He raised me with country music and I later played it on FM Country Radio. He taped every one of my shows. I miss him terribly. 3/30/2019.

My dad was a single father who raised us working for $1.75 an hour driving a forklift. We never had a clue we were poor until I was an adult. He had the "bills box" which was a shoe box under his bed, and he would tell us "Go play, I have to do the bills now.". We didn't even know what it was, but we knew it was important. Many lessons learned not to be greedy or always wanting things, I've never let money rule me. Because my dad. So when she says "Daddy always managed to get the money somehow", I can relate to that.

Loretta Lynn came from very humble beginnings, married as a young teenager, had 4 children by 17, and then had twins just as her music career started taking off. Se wrote most of her own material, said what she thought if you liked it or not, had a very hard love story with her only boyfriend/husband (yes, he would get drunk and hit her...and she would hit him back twice!), her husband literally had to make her go on stage in the beginning, she was so scared (she would get 4-day migraines, she was so stressed), although he cheated and could be abusive, he believed in her more than anyone else and pushed her to be the best she could be. She died living her motto: Never Quit, Never Retire. She was forced by health problems to stop touring, but she continued writing and recording songs. She was in the middle of a 5 album deal when she died, recently javing released yet another award winning album. She went from nothing to a net worth of $65Million...never forgetting where she came from, calling her fans "friends" because they afforded her to give her children a better life than she had, opening her ranch and campground to the public so they would have a place to stay when they visited, and thanking God for all her Blessings. She died peacefully in her sleep with over 3,000 songs she wrote but hadn't recorded yet.

I'm a coal miner's granddaughter: he mined soft coal in Iowa after he and grandma immigrated from Sweden. One of my fun memories is going out along the railroad tracks to collect spilled coal from the train cars; we used it in the coal furnace at the house.

Both my parents were almost this poor growing up (in Michigan)....mom's fam from Detroit, dad's fam from a farm in the north. I remember hearing about their hard times, and both sets of my grandparents' even worse times, from their respective European countries. Now here I am, typing my thoughts to you in my own warm house on this piece of technology. I take nothing I have, or am, for granted, and am so thankful I had good parents who instilled traditional values in me and my siblings.❤ I'm grateful for the better life we have now, and I wish the same for the younger generations in our family. Music like this touches me too, and it's among my favorite. R.I.P. Loretta

This song tells more than just a story. The thing about being a coal miner *before* unionization and governmental regulation was that most mines paid their employees in "script", not Dollars. Back in those days, the food and variety stores in coal mining towns were usually owned and operated by the local coal mines just like the available housing market was owned and operated by those same coal mines. When populations are "poor" in the USA, there's a reason behind it and it's usually $$$$$$$$$ and poor governmental regulations that allows the rich to profit while workers get the short end of the stick.
History is no mystery. As it was then and *remains today* situations like this are the fault of a local government that refuses to support the Common Good for All average citizens in the USA.

If you want to hear how much of a badass this woman was I would highly recommend songs like Fist City, The Pill, You ain’t Woman Enough and Don’t Come Home from Drinking. Even though it isn’t as popular today as her banned songs like “The Pill”, I think “Rated X” is one of them that is worth a listen. This woman didn’t hold punches. Literally and figuratively. This was my mother’s favorite song. She grew up on her father’s farm but when times were harder grandpa worked in the.coal mine at night while working the farm in the day time. They made the story of Loretta Lynn’s life into a movie and called it Coal Miners Daughter. I remember the day I took her to see the movie.my mother and her family and I all grew up in Western Colorado.
I knew her due to our love of Walking horses Not a big fan of her music but love the person she was. Hope to meet her when God calls us all home

Lynn was huge. When she came up when most of the country worked with their hands and backs. Moms did a lot of sewing making children’s clothing, you would buy a patterns. The women also knitted along with housework,sewing and caring for children. Most families had multiple children,I was 4-8 were commonplace. It was a hard life but you did what you had to and society was based on kids being educated and safe . As much as possible
My daddy did drywall (1970s)) so in cold months we did without a lot but my parents made sure we were loved. This song always reminds me of him. ❤

Wow. That hit my soul hard. My dad is just like that. Working hard to make sure we girls always had what we needed. Now he has cancer and we are trusting in god to help him recover. Hit me in the feels.
My Daddy worked as a house painter, and a very good one too, we lived in a little white frame house in Alabama. We raised chickens and hogs, we raised a big garden in the summer, canned vegetables for the winter. My Daddy would take my sister and I swimming in a beautiful clear creek in the summer , but we would be covered in dirt when we got home because our old pick up truck had a hole in the floor board we drove on dirt roads and the dust would fly up and cover us.
I had a wonderful childhood, at the time I didn't know it but now I wouldn't trade it for the world.
