How to Brew A Hoppy Lager Beer

  • In this brewing video, we show you how to make a hoppy lager using Nelson Sauvin hops. This is a low abv light lager that we're making to take to a friend's wedding. We're brewing it in honor of their two old cats that are known to pee everywhere, so we're calling this a Cat Piss Wedding Lager. However, catty is also a beer term that can describe good and bad flavors. We're obviously going for a good catty flavor that is similar to blackcurrant juice. This beer is going to get its light, easy-drinking, and dry body from a grain bill consisting of pale malt, acid malt, flaked corn and flaked rice. We mash these at a lower temperature than usual in order to extract more fermentable sugars from them. We recommend you follow along with this tutorial, brew this recipe at home, and take it to the pool on a hot summer day, share it with friends at a cookout, or take it to a game day tailgate. Check out the resources below for a full recipe, brewing equipment, and an article about what makes Nelson Sauvin hops special.

Pretty much sums up every brew day ever.

Rarely comment but got to say I really enjoy your videos, like the balance of banter and brewing. Wish I had the money to order one of your brewing systems, really like the simplicity of it and the grain basket

If you want to try the room temp lager fermentation you can try using White Lab's Cry Havock strain. I have done several lagers this way and they all turn out great. The fermentation temp is around the low 60s if I remember right and they have all turned out great. I used the brulosophy guy's experiments to guide me on how to properly modify the fermentation time.

We actually just brewed and aimed for around a 10% 5gallon beer that we split into 2 5 gallon batches and dumped water on to come out w a nice crushable 4% beer.

On a hot day you'll want a low abv and personally I don't care about the abv. I care more about flavor from a great product that o can make at Home. That Lager looks refreshing.

I love double IPAs and Russian imperial stouts as much as the next guy, but there's something about a crisp, refreshing lager!
I would love you guys forever if you were to brew a legit Munich Helles. Malty, but not sweet. Light noble hops smell and flavor. Pils malt, Hallertau hops, your choice of Bavarian lager yeast... Straight up Reinheitsgebot! It would also be neat to see you do a decoction mash!
