There's a face that we wear In the cold light of day - It's society's mask, It's society's way, And the truth is That it's all a facade! It's a nightmare We can never discard So we stay on our guard Though we love the facade What's behind the facade? Look behind the facade!
I love this song it’s like The Ballad of Sweeney Todd from Sweeney Todd, End of the Day from Les Miserables, and any of the theme songs from Super Smash Brothers combined
Ahhh we're doing Jekyll and Hyde (along with a few other musicals) in my school's musical theatre program, and my class is doing this song I LOVE IT SO MUCH
Awesomeness. I really don't get all the Frank Wildhorn hate. Granted, I haven't really looked into his other stuff, but this is a pretty legit musical. Sure it has it's corny bits, but what musical doesn't?
Well a good musical has no corny bits (Like the musicals Miss Saigon, Hamilton, and Ragtime) because they aren't relying on the music but simply using it to tell the story and express the thoughts of a charatcer in a way a play can't usually do. They also portray relevant themes like how being a mother is the greatest power of all (Miss Saigon) how history has it's eyes on you and that history will remember you for the way your story is told (Hamilton) and how times are changing and the people change too (Ragtime) but this is just my sill opinion.
i have said it on this video before but i will say it again. The Stride on this is sooo good, really undervalued. his voice is like guiness, and his phrasing is excellent. unlike some people (Hoff, im afraid to say) his voice is full of colour and concept
This is my favorite song in the whole musical; I'll be going with my school to see it in a few weeks, and I plan to warn my friends that I WILL cry when it's sung.
"And I'm certain, life is terribly hard" I don't think he played it out enough. Obviously, listening to the soundtrack it's going to be different but he hardly tried! It's an *amazing* note to reach, if I were him I'd have sung my heart out on that! But that's just me...
@barrettc17 Sometiems less is more. That's what I love about this number. It's so simple and the "choreography" doesn't pull away or distract from the lyrics. Sometimes "community theatre" forgets that what is most important is the STORY not the SHOW.
Anyone else notice the girl at 0:45 who scratches her butt? Every time i watch this i get distracted by that part and wondering if it was on purpose or if during the performance if her butt really itched.
tessa lassman It's on purpose, I'm pretty sure it's a combination of demonstrating their poverty through lack of manners, but also potentially intended from the point of view of the character as an insult to the upper class, willful disrespect
There is another RUclips video billed as a rehearsal which shows the same actress making the same motions at the same point in the song's performance. As Aidan Globus stated the action is part of the choreography.
Everyone in this cast is absolutely amazing, aside from Hoff. Sure, he's in character and all, and hits the right important notes, but as far as legendary singing, nobody can top Cuciolli or Colm Wilkinson. In my opinion, at least.
Does anyone know the name of the actor that has those solos at 2:26 "Do we walk the fine line that we'd cross if we could" and 2:57 "They're all in cahoots?" Or even just his character name? I want to see what else he's been in!
@reader1004 Ours is actually a video response down there. just watch. notice that almost all of the people in the number are under the age of 17 and there are NO mics involved whatsoever and we are a small community theatre in north Mississippi with almost no funding at all.
Who in all things sane and holy is that red-headed guy who is so amazing when he sings, "All in cahoots"? Is this the famed red tenor? I've no clue about vocal ranges other than if I could sing, which I can't, I'd be an alto. I love this musical, wish we did it rather in than Guys and Dolls for SummerStock Toronto 2005. :P
@MissAnon9001 ...? Sweeney Todd is about fifteen years older than this musical, unless I'm mistaken in believing that it came out in 1992? Sweeney Todd is 1979.
I like the hidden irony of the lower class being up on the podium and the higher class being down beneath them
Me too
I'm playing Jeckyll and Hyde right now and Facade is by far may favorite song from the show
That is one of my dream roles. One of the only downsides I can think of for playing that role is not getting to sing Facade.
I love the meaning behind this song because it is still true today and i love this concept of life like a masquerade
It is amazing
I'M INCLINED TO THINK!
There's a face that we wear
In the cold light of day -
It's society's mask,
It's society's way,
And the truth is
That it's all a facade!
There's a face that we hide
Till the nighttime appears,
And what's hiding inside,
Behind all of our fears,
Is our true self,
Locked inside the facade!
Every day
People, in their own sweet way,
Like to add a coat of paint,
And be what they ain't!
That's how our little -
Game is played,
Livin' like a masquerade
Actin' a bizarre charade -
While playing the saint!
But there's one thing I know,
And I know it for sure:
This disease that we've got
Has got no ready cure!
And I'm certain
Life is terribly hard -
When your life's a facade!
Look around you!
I have found
You cannot tell, by lookin' at the surface,
What is lurkin' there beneath it!
See that face!
Now, I'm prepared to bet you,
What you see's not what you get -
'Cause man's a master of deceit !
So, what is the sinister secret?
The lie he will tell you is true? -
It's that each man you meet
In the street
Isn't one man but two!
Nearly everyone you see -
Like him an' her,
An' you, an' me -
Pretends to be
A pillar of society -
A model for propriety -
Sobriety
An' piety -
Who shudders at the thought
Of notoriety!
The ladies an' gents 'ere before you -
Which none of 'em ever admits -
May 'ave saintly looks -
But they're sinners an' crooks!
Hypocrites!
Hypocrites!
There are preachers who kill!
There are killers who preach!
There are teachers who lie!
There are liars who teach!
Take yer pick, dear -
"Cause it's all a facade!
If we're not one, but two,
Are we evil or good?
Do we walk the fine line -
That we'd cross if we could?
Are we waiting -
To break through the facade?
One or two
Might look kinda well-to-do -
Hah! They're bad as me an' you,
Right down they're boots!
I'm inclined to think -
Half mankind
Thinks the other half is blind!
Wouldn't be surprise to find -
They're all in cahoots!
At the end of the day,
They don't mean what they say,
They don't say what they mean,
They don't ever come clean -
And the answer -
Is it's all a facade!
Is it's all a facade!
Man is not one, but two,
He is evil and good,
An' he walks the fine line
We'd all cross if we could!
It's a nightmare
We can never discard
So we stay on our guard
Though we love the facade
What's behind the facade?
Look behind the facade!
I love this song it’s like The Ballad of Sweeney Todd from Sweeney Todd, End of the Day from Les Miserables, and any of the theme songs from Super Smash Brothers combined
I love this song, but Confrontation, Girls of the Night, and Transformation are still my favorites (in that order)
Ahhh we're doing Jekyll and Hyde (along with a few other musicals) in my school's musical theatre program, and my class is doing this song I LOVE IT SO MUCH

This is my life's philosophy now.... Thank you
I love this musical-! I love this emsemble-!!

Who does he play?
@@XJIcequeen pretty sure he doesn't. but he did write the music to the musical
@@aediondraws oh
Love this song! It explains the whole musical! And life.
I love this Beaconsfield. When she arrives a 1.54, she sighs and smiles to herself. It's smug without sneering at the poor. Very subtle and I love it.
what a fantastic piece and the story it talks about is extremely actual
I saw this in NYC in the summer of 1998 with linda eder.. amazing. I love this show!
Good work from Brandi Chavonne Massey, and George, so good to see his face again, much love to the cast
My favorite ensemble number in any musical. Probably tied with the Ballad of Sweeney Todd.
This is literally the only thing that's keeping me alive.
I watched this in 7th grade and I fell in love with it! I love David Hasselhoff!
We did this as the opening song of our musical, Facade, in Dutch. It was wonderfull to sing it! Such a powerfull song!
i have said it on this video before but i will say it again. The Stride on this is sooo good, really undervalued. his voice is like guiness, and his phrasing is excellent. unlike some people (Hoff, im afraid to say) his voice is full of colour and concept
The staging of this song is sooooo much different in the revised tour.
favorite musical
I love this musical. We are putting it on at our local theater this coming Fall in October.
This is a GREAT song. And it is sooo much fun to sing. Especially with my company. :) x
Thats' kind of why I'm glad a friend of mine who got to sign that part in our musical. He killed it by going high!
Chocoroko wait, so he was in the musical while high?
I love this song! Powerful
This has got to be the best of all the songs in this.
I absolutely love this song thanks for uploading it
This is my favorite song in the whole musical; I'll be going with my school to see it in a few weeks, and I plan to warn my friends that I WILL cry when it's sung.
„There are Teachers that lia and there are Liars that teach...“ Obi-Wan and Palpatine 🤪
超級愛這首❤️❤️❤️
1:24 is Kelli O'hara!!!
That is Mr. Craig Schullman...in an ensemble role here, I've seen him as Jean Valjean...he's done it several THOUSAND times.
Which voice is he?
I notice Kelli O'Hara and also Brandi Chavonee Massey (former Elphaba u/s on Broadway). Both in the Ensemble!!
We're doing this show next Wed-Sat 7-10 April in our Town Hall, its going to be brilliant! Great Show with Great Cast! =)
2:25 he rocks!
My schools choir is singing this for our choir and it is such an amazing song.

This paints society even today
I love this song! I wish my school would put on Jekyll and Hyde :D
w00t. First comment.
This is one of the best songs in this play! Jekyll and Hyde is the best play ever.
Love this song. Thank you!
John Treacy Egan is the guy the hits the big notes. great job!
we did this at school, and although i was playing danvers i got to do the 'im inclined to think' awsome!

This is amazing...
In high school we did a medley of Jekyll and Hyde, and Facade was always my favorite
He is awesome!!!
"And I'm certain, life is terribly hard" I don't think he played it out enough. Obviously, listening to the soundtrack it's going to be different but he hardly tried! It's an *amazing* note to reach, if I were him I'd have sung my heart out on that! But that's just me...
Loooooook behiiiiiiiind theeeee faaacade ;)
Actually, Barrie Ingham was Basil. Vincent Price was Ratigan.
great song
so amazing!
I love it.
@gracie94elton they slowly say "look behind the facade"; it sounds like "looooook behiiiind theeeeeee faaaaaa-caaaaaaaaaaaaaaaade"
Aahh!! My Choir are singing this song for our broad way night at the end of the month, Its going to be incredible, Can't wait!!
Tenors for the win.
I love this show XD
Maravillosooo!!!

God I wish I could of saw this on Broadway...
I like Hasselhoff as Jekyll, but he's a completely different person as Hyde; he scares me as Hyde

I think it's a gesture to show that she's lower class, not a "proper" lady.

Yes because it's 100% true.
Actually Vincent Price was the voice of Rattigan. If you don't believe me, look it up.

still amazing after ten years!

Danvers or the other guy? If its Sir Danvers, that's Barrie Ingham. He was Rattigan in the Disney Sherlock Holmes mouse movie.
Pause at 0:12. To funny. I love that red headed guy. :)
