rough translation for any non jpn speaking fans :] sorry for any inaccuracies
    (i=interviewer, m=mitski)
[everyone says hello and nice to meet you]
    0:23
i: do you normally live in new york?
m: ah, that’s true, i’ve been mostly touring so to say i normally live in new york i don’t really live anywhere
i: originally, do you have an apartment in new york?
    m: no, no i don’t
i: you don’t? what do you do about your letters?
m: my letters are sent to my parents
i: ahh so you don’t have your own residence
m: i don’t, about 3 years ago i lived in new york but now with touring and touring and paying rent was such a pain since i didn’t live there
i: so do all of your papers and letters get sent to your fathers?
    m: yes!
    i: ahh, like a traveler
    [laughing]
i: that’s so cool, well, from a kid you’ve lived in all sorts of places, right?
m: yes, that’s it so i don’t really feel any discomfort in traveling
i: ohh, where were you born?
m: my birth was in japan!
i: in japan, and from there?
m: from there… japan to congo
    i: congo? in africa?
    i: suddenly?
    m: yes, suddenly!
    i: wow, i’ve never been
m: taiwan, czechia… czechia to, umm, malaysia! then, to japan, then a little to the us, then turkey. then, finally, for college, i returned to the us.
i: which country did you feel the most connected with?
    m: malaysia!
    i: why?
m: malaysia’s whole year is summer, so it’s happy to a kid, right?
    i: yes, thats so
    [laughing]
i: that’s right, especially with the beaches. ahh, that’s it, and now to think there’s no residence! a trying musician, mitski, and you came back to japan on november 24 (interview date)
i: other than last year, is this year one year from japan? [i don’t really get what he says here lol]
    m: that’s right, it’s been one year
    2:25
i: is there background in japan?
    m: yes, there is
    i: how is it, japan?
m: well, japan, though i like it, it is different from america, there are times you could say it’s the opposite
i: opposing, basically the opposite. even though, you have background here and to come back for a live, it is happy isn’t it?
m: very happy! especially, having activity in america until now, then to come back to japan with a feeling like “i did it!” and have a live
    i: like being rich!
    m: that, that, yes
    i: that’s it
    m: i’m home and i did it!
i: like i did it! so it is a feeling like that.
m: yes, that is the feeling! to you all who come to the live it must be fine either way, to come from here
i: but that must be very happy right, from a fan coming
    m: yes
i: from when did you start making music?
m: music, from when i was 17/18 i started making my own songs but before that i was playing piano but with no feeling to create something myself. generally from the age when i left highschool, how to say this, i don’t remember but i began to create and then began to study in the us so since i was in new york i started activity in new york
i: so there was a plan to become a musician?
    m: that is true
    i: it came true!
    m: yes, thank you
i: [idk what he says here] travelling around the world and came to this station and bringing your guitar, what song are you playing for us today?
    4:24
m: today, i am playing “your best american girl”, a song with a video
i: from the album, puberty 2, it was released a year ago but playing today, what kind of song is this?
m: this is a song from when i lived in america, about being in love and the person i was in love with wasn’t asian or japanese, just american and there was such a big difference, and i did like them but eventually, to continue in those circumstances and different background makes you consider your life, and it’s very difficult. so it’s that kind of emotion
i: to think like that, it must be like that between your mother and father as well?
    m: yes, that’s true. that’s true
    [laughing]
i: so a song with that kind of feeling. then please go on
    5:26
    [song]

Her explanation about the song, about how she fell in love with a person and as much as she liked this person, their differences in culture made her feel it would be difficult to traverse life together with this person. Despite her parents being in interracial marriage, which was mentioned by the interviewer.

whoa my duolinguo japanese was actually enough for me to understand what they said. i just love how authentic mitski is. not in the sense of her speaking fluent japanese per se, but that her sharing of her personal struggles of being asian in america comes from such an authentic place, not to mention she still keeps very in touch with her asian heritage, like i remember her recommending sheena ringo's teacup album a while back saying that was one of her all time favorites, and it's very organic and not for the sake of "rediscovering my roots and identity".

Morphieta My Japanese is super limited so please take this with a grain of salt... They briefly cover her background like what countries she’s lived in (Japan, Congo, Czech, Taiwan, Malaysia, United States, etc.) and when/how she first started making music (17-18 years old via piano). How she lived in NY for ~3 years, but stopped having a place of her own (it didn’t make sense to pay for rent when she was constantly touring). Though she mentions playing a show in New York is like returning (to a home base kinda?). Segue into song. They ask what it’s about and from her response I could only decipher “living in America,” and the words “different,” “background,” and “difficult.” It’s especially hard to determine what the song is truly about bc I have a preconceived interpretation. Anyway after performance she explains that sometimes she tours solo on acoustic guitar, but for this show in Tokyo, Mitski is a three-person band; she plays bass and there is a guitarist and drummer. I think she says she likes bass more than playing guitar bc bass is powerful and it just feels good. I think the aesthetic design of her record is mentioned. Also one DJ asks “Why ‘Puberty 2?’” She says it’s just funny, like “...Puberty Comes Again!” Mitski mentions she likes music by Bjork and M.I.A. As for her own songwriting process, something about vocal melody coming first and then the other parts come together. At the very end they plug her Tokyo gig and exchange thanks... Sorry this is so long and drawn out lmao 🤣
