How and When Jerkbaits Outperform Swimbaits

Jerkbaits aka minnow baits are similar to soft swimbaits in many ways. Both closely resemble prey fish on the retrieve, they catch predator fish everywhere and they’re easy to fish. But when bass are in a tentative mood, you need to elicit reaction strikes by manipulating lure action, and well-designed jerkbaits provide endless retrieve options.
As pro angler Mark Fisher points out, real minnows dart around, stop quickly and often hang in suspension. Quality jerkbaits mimic this action while most soft swimbaits sink toward the bottom on the pause. A suspending jerkbait remains in the strike zone and creates a collision that often triggers bites. Another benefit is that treble hooks catch nippers or lazy bites whereas they need to eat single hook swimbaits to get pinned.
The beauty of minnow baits is that anyone can cast them out, reel 'em in and be successful. Just remember to experiment with a variety of retrieves until you start getting bit then repeat what’s working.

I been working this bait so wrong. That underwater footage is amazing.
The only wrong way to work it is when fish won't eat it! It's a fun freestyle bait that has a lot of moves. Good luck jerkbaiting with it, and thanks for the love on the bait underwaters 🙌.
Having fished multiple s in different sizes and colors, ruclips.net/user/postUgkxCbNOWAGmn6nfbCbJDmasvBq7J38KZNw2 this is by far my favorite. One thing to be aware of is the sided willow blade. One side is silver and the other is the green/orange shown. This is not bad, just unconventional. In terms of fishing, I have found the lure works just fine without a tail like a craw or shad. That addition is up to you. Also, the hook part where you attach the swivel snap or tie the line is a problem on baits these days, since it's able to slide up and down. However this lure seems to be tight enough that that doesn't happen often, and you can solve it by putting a thin slice of medical tube over the hook before attaching the line. Like others have said, it's really magic on a good windy day.
Great advice on jerkbait fishing. I know a lot of people that use the straight retrieve when throwing them and it works. You don't always need to use the traditional jerk bait cadence and retrieve.
For use in salt water, which one is better ?! RipStop or XRap?!

I know it's been a long time since you posted this but I am hoping you may answer a question. I am fishing in 30 foot of water for walleye with fish near the bottom. Do these lures go that deep? If not, how do you get the lure down to the fish?

What's the best rod to use for smaller jerk baits and crank baits like the one you just used
Hi Jimmy, boy, for small jerkbaits, a medium-light power spinning rod spooled with 8-10 pound braid and a 10-pound fluorocarbon leader is tough to beat. You get better (and easier) casting distance as well as the ability to work baits both up and down as discussed in this video: ruclips.net/video/pxeBnHrSOG0/видео.html
If casting gear is your thing, then you'd want a shorter 6'7'' to 6'10'' medium power rod with a moderate taper, probably spooled with 10-pound fluorocarbon or monofilament line.

Thanks Johnny, a little different than our standard jerkbait content, but some important points made. The most important being ANYONE can cast and catch. Just experiment and play around a little on the retrieve.

I found rapalas have really good action but I can’t cast them very far. I use them when I’m sightfishing or targeting structure. If you want a long cast, use the googan squad scout. It doesn’t have the best action but it can cast very far. Lucky craft jerkbaits are also really good because they have the best of both worlds. Just buy a bunch of jerkbaits from a few brands because they all shine in certain situations.
Only one issue I have picked up.. I can't cast it very far.
Off a boat it might work well, but from the shore.. Just not enough distance.
Are you fishing it on spinning tackle? If not, you'll get much better casting distance using a medium-light spinning rod with 8-10 pound braid to 10-pound fluorocarbon leader.

I'm using an infinity MH 7ft with Burkley whiplash 0.06mm, 24pd moss green and a Shamano Sedona 2500HG.
I do mostly spinning, Skitter V's, Skitter walks, metal jigs like Jigparas ranging from 7g to 20gr. Shiver sticks. Bucktails and soft plastics.
Summer time is coming soon here in South Africa, I will give the ripstop another try.
I do have a Medium Soft 7ft rod Sensation power plus. Maybe I should try that rod and Shamano reel with the Ripstop?

The only bad this about baits with treble hooks is sometimes they can hurt the fish. Not so good for those of us who practice catch and release. Was debating changing out all my treble hooks for singles. Anyone done well changing out the hooks? I know the hook up percentage will go down. But if more fish live to fight another day I am ok with it. I am not a tournament angler.
We appreciate your conservation mindset Vinny. You are correct in stating treble hooks tend to be harder on fish. Boils down to a personal choice as it relates to lure selection. The Canadian province of Manitoba only allows 1 barbless treble hook to be used on any bait and single barbless for all others.

They do have some excellent long-cast jerk/minnow baits. The X-Rap Series, Husky Jerk Series and CountDown Series come in a variety of sizes and cast exceptionally well. The BX Minnow is another good distance casting lure.

I dont like treble hooks!!!! It can ruin the fishes mouth, they are much much worse to pull out of someone or your self, and my biggest issue of all with them is I can not fish any sort of vegetation or structure, for example, grass, lily pads, sticks, tree limbs, and even in salt water, the barnacles, they get snagged and they dont come unsnagged. ALL my lures have single hooks on them and it helps tremendously. Anyways just my opinion. Great video and Great points, I learned.

Definitely gonna have to try the single hook jerk baits, the plastics work theres just always times of the day where a deep diver crank or a deep water jerk bait is the key to getting the aggressive smalleys to bite, and or your large mouth

Believe it or not i absolutely kill walleye on these things early march and April and again in late September to october in shallow water.
Thanks for sharing Antonio. We experience the same in the Great Lakes States -- prespawn and post-spawn walleye are suckers for jerkbaits as are fish that return shallow in the fall.
