I love these wee Chinese radio! I have a few and think they’re great value! I know the quality isn’t fantastic but it’s not bad especially with my tinnitus! They’re certainly a good starting point for newcomers!
probably was dripped in when assembled and broke loose from the metal frame overtime causing the vibration. nothing surprises me with these things any more.
I too have experience of the D808. It's build is pretty basic and it would certainly benefit from a better quality speaker! Still it remains the best value for money, small DX portable. 73s and GDX. Jim, Dundee
Now that was strange, it looks like hot glue but why would they use it inside. That speaker looks very shallow, not much chance of replacing it if it failed. My mate has nearly all of those small radios, why i dont know. Maybe he is trying to breed them lol :-D. Hope you have a loverly 2023 :-D

Anyway, that lump of 'hot-snot' did look as though it had been there from the factory, what with the bit of black it picked up from the cone and all. A friend of mine has a very similar looking radio, as viewed from the front, but it runs on normal batteries. Otherwise it could be the same radio. I know it won't be because she wouldn't pay that sort of money a palm sized set! I have a Roberts R9921 that I've owned for donkeys'years. I bought it for whenever I wind up in hospital, but apart from taking it out of the box, testing and putting it away again, it's never been used in anger. It's a very basic set which claims to be a "World Radio". My guess would be that yes, it would work anywhere in the world, but it's not going to pull in stations from all over the world! So anyway, I'm glad you got it sorted out. Now, Happy New Year to you and Mrs OjNoj, and may the best still be yet to come.🍾🥂🍺🍻🎉

Good tip on upgraded battery. I’m all thumbs on repairs as evidenced by the fact I seem to get visited by the magic pixies every time I work on anything with elecflickery involved. 👍
Makes you wonder how these odd things happen. My original D808 has an intermittent power fault and occasionally dies. Remove the battery for a few hours and it will work for days again. So I bought a 4 month old one last year for £40, has the later amber display but the new firmware makes the radio slower to respond, the original version I have to say is a better radio. I also did a mod on the old one to improve Long Wave and it makes a big difference, just a switched 560pf cap in parallel with the pick up coil on the ferrite rod and a tiny switch on the side of the case.
I have carried out some tests. Summary first: The Xhdata D-808 is mediocre on LW; inconclusive results on Airband (see details). I tested the Xhdata on LW against 2 other radios: a Panasonic GX500 (also marked RF3500) and a Sony ICF-SW11. For signal sources, I used BBC Radio 4 on 198kHz, RTÉ Radio 1 on 252kHz and the time signal from Allouis on 162kHz. The tests were done during daytime. The BBC Radio 4 transmitter is rated at 500kW and is approximately 100 miles away. Both the Panasonic and the Sony gave strong reception with no noise. The Xhdata gave listenable reception, with moderate noise. In my view, this is quite poor performance from the Xhdata. The transmitter is powerful enough to cover all of England on mass market domestic radios. The RTÉ Radio 1 transmitter is rated at 300kW and is approximately 230 miles away. The Panasonic picked up a fair signal with some noise. The Sony picked it up with a bit more noise; listenable only if you're really keen! The Xhdata barely managed to detect the signal at all. The Allouis transmitter is rated at 800kW and is approximately 350 miles away. It was strong on the Panasonic and the Sony, but only weak on the Xhdata. Unfortunately, there is barely any Airband usage in my area. In any case, I do not have another Airband radio to hand for comparison tests. I did hear two quite strong but brief transmissions from aircraft on 132.300MHz, which I understand is a radar service for Western England. During several scans of the Airband, the Xhdata picked up nothing more.

they are a great wee set bar their inability to scan the 26-30 Mhz band.
I’d silicone the speaker back in but make sure you use the none corrosive stuff!

I had a very similar problem of a cracking sound from the radio. I replaced the speaker with one from another radio and now works ok.
