Man, starters these days have it GOOD. When I started, basses at these prices were pretty bad overall. These days, 139 Euros, man that's pretty damn sweet, and comparable to stuff that was like 700-800 back in the day.
Roseacer is stabilized and dyed maple. (Hard maple's linnaean name is Acer saccharum, Eastern maple is Acer rubrum, etc...) Also, the Bongo basses have a basswood (also known as Linden) so it's not at all used just for cheap basses.
I just received an HB MB-5SB yesterday, for €129. I got it, to try 5 string. Is 5 string for me? Ok, at this price, the tuners are not the best, but they work. The bridge isn't the best finished, but it works. The knobs aren't quite straight, but they work. Out of the box, the set up wasn't bad (other than a massively high action), not bad at all. All of the important stuff is really well done. Neck straight, tight neck pocket, beautiful finish, frets not the smoothest, none high and nothing sharp enough to cut your fingers. I am exceptionally pleased with it and think I'll be keeping this for a long time. How they can do this, for this price is beyond me.
Got the same one, just did some working on it...fretjob ans so on, made a TUSQ-nut, i love it! I will do some more, a switch to choose the humbucker in several modes, especialliy I would love to use it in serial mode. I think that PJ will join my Harley-Benton-collection too...soon.🙂
I bought one about 6 months ago and can say these things about it. The B string on mine is fantastic. Very balanced. The frets have a few high spots, and the pickups sound good, but am going to be upgrading them (the J pickup is a little noisy) But with shipping to the US it was around $220, so I will attest these are a steal. The hardware is basic but works well. I would imagine an upgrade with some Delanos or Bartolinis and this bass would really be amazing for the money.
"Crazy times we're living in" @3:39 was the funniest part. I'm soooo tempted to buy this bass but I have the 4-string p bass version of this and it's a bit noisy. I'm swapping out the pickup on that for an active EMG (plus, I'll do some shielding while I'm at it). Any opinions on the noise level of this one?
All this bass needs is a Balance control instead of the neck pickup Volume. much easier to manipulate on stage. (like rolling off the single vol at the end of a ballad) I have the Harley Benton PJ-5 HTR Deluxe Series, and the B string kicked ass !
I have this bass and love it, but the one problem that i have with it, is that a great set of strings cost as much as the bass itself LOL jokes aside its a great bass, cant recommend it enough
I think overall the pj tales the win for the versatility I was choosing between the two literally today and searched it up on a Harley Benton owners club forum and someone said with the MB-5 you'll have THAT sound but the pj gives you more freedom but if you that stingray you can go with that but one of the reviews said that the pickup on the mb was not that good and the pj's pickups got much more positive reviews also one video said that the bridge on the mb was annoying to work with when comes to restringing the b string and I chose the PJ myself and I'm in a death metal band. I haven't bought it yet but I think I'm gonna buy it soon P.s: definitely restring it after you buy it and if you can get new tuners and bridge definitely do it and if you want to paint the pickguard use plastic paint
I bought this bass last week used for €80. Iweights 4,35kg! Its a little heavy compare to myLakland 55-01 with 4kg! When i was at home. Adjust the neck (little flatter), stringhight and intonation! But!,! There was a lot of distortion when i dont touch the strings. The bridge was earted! The i stick shieling tape in the room under pickups and knobs. Nie it is quiet!!! A good bass which says the cheapest fenders are a lot too expansive!!,
A bit late, but the paint in the bridge is not conductive so you have to scrape of the paint where the strings touches the bridge. it works. I have the same bass and I love it.
Dang Dood, I'm looking at getting a custom built P-bass 5'ver built exactly how I want by Maruszczyk but your videos entice compromise. $1800 to get what I Really want or $200 for the essentials? Old fart alert: back in my day, if your parents were buying you could get Fender or Gibson (if you played guitar) or Japanese copies like Ibanez, Lotus or my beloved Hondo II Professional from a summer's worth of mowing lawns, working movie theaters or fast food. I love that quality instruments are affordable to beginners now!!
I ordered 3 HB basses (not this one). All of them had issues. The shortscale p-style is incredibly heavy. The 5-string fretless has a giant paint smear on the back (was not advertised as "b-stock".. but this is even beyond "b"). The 5-string musicman knockoff has a very wide neck and narrow string spacing.. also, strings are offset from the middle. Very weird to play on. In the end, you get exactly what you pay for. A working instrument with all kinds of issues, that you can't allow to be seen with. I own a variety of basses, the cheapest being $320 5-string Squier P-bass, and those HBs feel like child toys in comparison to it. And I'm really not a demanding person or super-pro musician noticing slightest instruments nuances, but those HBs don't cut it for me, not with this production quality, nor with the playability, nor with the sound.
Because in current times making serviceable basses is not actually expensive if do not have to do R&D. Harley Benton as far as I understand has contracts with the manufacturers of big name brands and basically has access to the same machines and presets. A robot controlled by a computer doesn't do shoddy work. The rest of the price is Thomann's ability to do bulk contracts. And you see how this puts pressure on the market. Ibanez recently had to put out high quality cheap price guitars, because their traditional offerings lose a lot of value in face of Harley Benton. I think long term Harley Benton will not seem weirdly cheap but just like "yeah, that's what a bass of that quality level costs".
PLEASE stop playing the B string with a pick and distortion every time you play it, and especially on cheap basses. All it does is make it feel like you're hiding how bad the B string is instead of letting us hear how it really is. It also just makes me go and look for other reviewers to hear how it really sounds and basically makes your reviews feel lower quality and like you're trying to hide the bad aspects.
Never Harley Benton again. Sorry. Had a faulty instrument that was a "B-stock" which should have been checked before sending out THE SECOND TIME. Also it was not the same model as advertised. Double scam. No thanks. Budget instruments you want? SX is the way.

Harley Benton are building some really good instruments
Sometimes they do, sometimes they send you a lemon via serious negligence regarding B-stock regulation and false advertising.
@@Landon_Bailey. let’s talk then

still a made up name ;) exists nowhere outside of Harley Benton
Nah that's a lie bro
The Fender Aerodyne is also made of basswood
@@basstheworldofficialall names are made up 😉

My first bass was from Sears. Bass and amp combo. Loved it.

I have the Harley benton JJ-55OP and i love it ! Sounds good and feels great.

Might be one of the prettiest HB released yet.
Can't wait for the Harley Benton "Bass The World Edition" basses!
Thanks for the review. I'm looking at this bass.
I have this bass and love it, but the one problem that i have with it, is that a great set of strings cost as much as the bass itself LOL jokes aside its a great bass, cant recommend it enough
Good strings that are affordable are the regular ernie ball slinky 5
I just got one recently and it's the nicest bass I've ever played under $250
That's a very nice-looking and sounding bass!!!
Between this and the stingray style, which would be better for metal/ cutting through guitar distortion?

I'd be delighted if you do a review of capo preamp by jad freer audio.
Im starting to think that, considering harley benton is made by thoman, those basses are good because they recicle what remaines in stock
I've got the 4 string version. It kicks ass!!!!!!
Awesome video
What is the weight of this bass ?
5 string dream

Ok, what about the string spacing ?
Anyone 🙏 🙏 🙏 pls
Where can i find the serial number of this bass?😥
You hide it well, but I see some subtle hints that you used a stunt double for the guitar playing scenes.

i dont for other HB models but those deluxe series for me are far great than any squier i have played and i have played a lot of them!
hello Uncle Gregor
How is the b string?
very very nice!but you must change strings. ernie ball are great fit
If Harley Benton are so good, why don't you have them make your Signature basses?
Harley Benton guitars and bass are absurdly cheap and the bass guitars sound pretty decent for the price tag.
I hope they do a 6 😂
Im from philiines give me samle a best pedal reggae bass . Tnx
WHY Harley Benton is so cheap, and acceptably Good?

It's Thomann's brand and they're the biggest instrument dealer in Europe.

Well... it's a german product. 😉👌
It sounds like a cheap bass.
