If on land and in the air, Russia went to war with Ukraine having a strong quantitative advantage in numbers of every weapon system available, on the sea, such advantage was the most prominent. Initial Russian plans were to use their Black Sea fleet that could conveniently operate in both, the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov from multiple naval bases in Crimea in a supporting role for land forces. This is because the Ukrainian fleet was not seen as even a minor threat to any of the Russian ships. The idea included enforcing a naval blockade of both military and merchant Ukrainian vessels just for enough time for land forces to capture the main Ukrainian ports in Odesa and Mykolaiv together with intact assets. Focusing on the first two years of the war, we want to tell how exactly Ukraine managed to completely turn the tables on the sea, achieving the unthinkable. Without much of its conventional fleet, eventually enforcing its own naval blockade of Russian military ships across the Black Sea by the second anniversary of the Full-Scale Russian Invasion of Ukraine.

Thank you so much for this video, as much as i hate this conversations about this war, this specific topic is barerly covered and fascinating.
great video
if you improve mike a bit you will become more accessible and I am sure you will get a lot of recognition
You did an amazing job Ukie !
Thanks, very fun
I don't care about what the RUclips algorithm wants creators to output, an hour-long analysis of war events is awesome
Can’t find this stuff in many places and the best stuff always has the least views
Downloaded several of their videos for my flight. Absolutely perfect.
never knew how intense the re-capture of Snake Island was. Awesome stuff
Russian planes were running low level sorties, a pilot describes how crazy it was.
pointless and needless but awesome lol
@ronin3028 The video didn't go in to how important it was for maintaining grain shipments. The main source of income for the ukrainian economy. It wasn't just for PR
@@ronin3028 denying the russian navy complete control over the Black Sea and allowing grain shipments to continue is hardly pointless. Ukraine has been punching above it's weight in that theatre and inflicting defeats on russia that have much longer term strategic implications than pretty much anywhere else
@@ronin3028 You described your comment
Imagine loosing naval warfare against an opponent with no notable navy
NO FLEET AT ALL!!! ONLY DRONES
The Russians probably feel something like the British sailors in 1939-1941 in the fight against the Wolf Packs of Admiral Dönitz
thats the future , drones
In b4 China BTFOs the US Navy.
Russia is the only country that lost a naval engagement to a landlocked country.
The best part is that Putin thought he could just leave the grain deal and hit Odessa and that his black sea fleet would remain intact.......now his black sea fleet is absolutely fucked.
even living in Ukraine and watching all the news first hand makes it a bit hard to appreciate a grand strategic result. Thank you for this great summary.
You forgot one interesting thing. During the liberation of Snake Island, the Ukrainians placed barrel and rocket artillery on a barge so that the island was in the zone of destruction.
This war has definitely changed naval combat of this century!
I doubt in open ocean fleets but definitely in local naval clusters like this.
This is nothing new. The advantage of small attack boats in coastal waters has been acknowledged since the late 19th century.
Shhh, contrarian.
@@user-do5zk6jh1k just remember the 2nd Pacific squadron battling Japanese torpedo boats already in the North sea
These naval drone attacks only work in the black sea and other closed seas where the waves are small.
The effort put into this video is amazing.
I am not sure how many hours this took for you to make, but it was worth it, in my opinion.
The script is well written, informative, and easy to follow.
Your info-graphics, video clips, animations, and maps are edited perfectly together.
This video is doing important work.
It is important to record modern history. I consider you a historian.
An amazing historian can produce content, such as this, which effectively shares your findings with the rest of the world.
Can’t express how amazed I am by this video, best of luck. Keep up the good work!
Without this video, the sacrifices of many brave Ukrainian men and women might have been lost to history.
Thanks for immortalizing their sacrifices.
Thank you for your support! We are thrilled that you found the video informative and well-produced. Such feedback always motivates us to work on upcoming projects and further raise the quality of research and visuals. Thanks again for your encouragement!
@@TheWarArchive IT WAS EPIC! Thank you!
Very well said.
Early war was really something else
Hi Archive, a 1 hour 16 minute video. Yay, and it's not even my birthday. 👍
"I'm Not Locked in Here With You, You're Locked in Here With Me" - Ukraine
I knew Ukraine gave the black sea fleet a bloody nose. But holy hell, this is insane. They sank almost of the Russian fleet with nothing but UAVs and cruise missiles.
The Muskava was an embarrassment of a flagship.
Even if the aledged leaked maintenance report is fake, the dact that the ship was sunk at all indicates something was seriously wrong with the ship's defenses or the crew's ability to use them...
You spoil us, good sir! An over hour-long vid about the ongoing war in Ukraine? Surely, I haven't been that good this week.
In all seriousness, thank you so much for making stuff like this! I get so sick of how obnoxiously stupid so many Americans are when it comes to the literal details of war, the logistics of what makes an Army or Navy or Airforce function, or the various other details that you cover so well. You have also helped me immensely with my pronunciation of various locations, or officials. I can't wait to see what other info you have in store for us as it relates to this ongoing tragedy engulfing Ukraine. Slava Ukraini!
I had been looking for an updated (and correct) graphic of the current state of the Russian Black Sea Fleet. Thank you for providing such a great overview!
What a way to end the week, thank you!
What a complete documental!!!
Thanks for it
Slava ukraine 🇺🇦 Greetings from costa 🇨🇷 rica
Чудове відео! Було б цікаво (іноземцям) послухати про те, як починалась російсько-Українська війна в період 2013-2022.
Absolutely amazing informational piece - you sir keep going above and beyond. Thank you for your continued effort.
Very happy to hear you are getting sponsors, and a very good one too.
Just to nit-pick a bit, as Perun mentioned in his naval video, Moskva and the other capital ship being from the 80s, isn't that old in terms of naval assets, they're still quite new (which make the losses even more embarrassing.)
Yeah, that's a fair point. I tried to hint at that when I said that Moskva, after all, was unmatched in its capabilities in the Black Sea. US Nimitz aircraft carriers, even though being a completely different class of vessels, also can be regarded as ships from the 80s, if we look at the time when they were designed. By all means, this does not make them less formidable, especially due to high-quality maintenance and modifications.
It wouldn't be very old in any navy, except russias...
The lackluster maintenance of russias navy makes the vessels age more quickly then others...
@@SuperUltimateLP The maintenance issues in the Russian navy is fucking laughably bad 🤣.
The age of the vessel is much less relevant than it's maintenance and upgrade cycle. Most halfway modern vessels are built to acommodate upgrades later in life and in the times of guided weapons those are usually sensors and electronics.
A burning aircraft carrier anybody? I still remember making my foreign policy classes burst out laughing by showing images of Russia’s Navy spontaneously belching out smoke off the coast of Syria. Here we are six years later.
How this channel only has 75k subs is baffling to me.
Incredible production. Thank you for your work and looking forward to your next!
I really appreciate the captions of contexts for the photos and video clips shown.
I love that RUclips translates USV (unmanned surface vehicle) as "American Vehicles" when putting the subtitles in Spanish
Amazingly good video, though I do have one gripe with it related to the section at 38:50 on the Sevastopol attack. The information given about the Starlink malfunction was proven incorrect by the very author of the initial passage for the information used and widely reported by the media.
Starlink coverage of the area was never turned off, as it was never online to begin with. This was an operational error on the side of the UAF, as they would have known that Starlink was not active in occupied territory to prevent Russia from using it.
For whatever reason, Ukraine still pushed for the attack and did not contact SpaceX or the DoD until after the drone wave was already lost, urging spaceX to turn on the coverage. However as per the official DoD directive on western weapons and systems imports, no imported weapon or component used in weapon guidance/communication could be in excess of a certain range from the front.
As a result, on top of escalatory concerns (which were the exact same as for other long range systems at the time), to give ukraine acess without prior DoD approval (which Ukraine should have done prior to the attack) would have meant asking spaceX to go against their own license and brazenly violate official US policy. After the incident, Ukraine and SpaceX worked out a temporary deal with the DoD (who was still refusing to give Ukraine a military license for starlink use) to use the system for strikes until many months of battling resulted in Ukraine finally getting a license they could employ for those strikes (and the DoD finally stopping its freeloading off the civilian network)
Following the failed attack, naval drones kept using starlinks as their communication and in fact intensified their use over time. The only reports of "adaptation away from starlink reliance" only appeared after the release of the incorrect story and therefore do not seem to line up with reality (as the in between period saw a drastic increase of positive UAF feedback on the system).
Just something to note as this story was the topic of heavy political recuperation and intentional disinformation, and does not make any sense considering new drones still use V3 terminals and even relay drones have begun equiping terminals for mid air control. Which does not fit at all the idea of an unreliable system from an untrustworthy source.
this channel deserves more subscribers and its videos could be shown in schools and a public forums all over the world, they are important and the channel very much deserves its name!
Slava Ukraini
Around 17:00 you mention a ua Konkurs ATGM attack on a russian patrol craft as being the first in history. If i may bring your attention to an event during the Siege of Dubrovnik in 1991 where a Croatian team using a Malyutka ATGM scored several hits on a Yugoslav navy coastal gun boat.
Anyways loving the videos, keep up the superb work.
in 1982 the Royal Marines defending South Georgia from Argentinian Invasion damaged an Argentinian Corvette using a Carl Gustav ATGM. Also during that conflict the Argentinian cruiser Admiral Belgrano was sunk by a British submarine and I think it was bigger than the Moskva. Apart from those details this was an excellent explanation of the early invasion and subsequent events, keep up the good work!!
Few people know about this, but at the beginning of the war there was an incident that is bound to go down in history; it is little known. The Ukrainian boat lured the Russian ship to a place closer to the shore, unfortunately the boat was sunk, the crew died, but fortunately the ship was also sunk. The RZSV hail system was placed on the floating platform and, sailing from the shore, it waited for its target and with an accurate salvo it was sunk. I also remember a battle between 3 boats, against the shore, then 1 boat was sunk and 2 sailed away. I saw it with my own eyes.
I think the best compliment to this video that could be done is the fact that I didn't expect to watch the whole thing but over time it grew on me. Thank you very much for making this documentary! Слава Україні!
i’ve been waiting for a video like this since the start of the war
1 HOUR?!?
And 16 minutes :)
And 21 seconds :)
And is not Christmas :)
Really great work. You’re a true inspiration as an academic. Documenting these events is a hugely difficult process but much needed for proper dissemination
1:15:46 That's some impressive work from a country "without a navy". Slava
@41:35 As someone who is familiar with fighter aircraft, though not the SU-27, it seem like the fighter ignited its afterburners to swat the drone rather than dumped fuel on it. I say this because, given the contrail location, it seems incongruous that the dump system would release fuel right next to the engine exhaust. I would, however, welcome contradiction to my assertion.
Some planes like F111 have the ability to ignite dumped fuel so it’s entirely possible, and perhaps even makes more sense in case you’re flying over populated areas
The fuel comes from the afterburners. The reason it's not igniting is because the afterburners ignition isn't on. Not all of the exhaust is hot air. Plenty of it is passive atmospheric air from the intake. And on top of all that, I'm positive even shitty Russian planes have near instant afterburners. I live near Luke afb and have seen plenty of f16s, f15s, f35s with afterburners and it's almost an immediate giant flame. Way too much time passes for this to be the pilot igniting afterburners.
You are doing a great service to world history
We have to give Russia’s Black Sea fleet credit for how successful they were in attacking hospitals, maternity wards, schools, shopping malls and apartment buildings.
Ukraine shouldn’t use them for military purposes than

Excellent video, thanks for the information. Ukraine's outsized success with a rather limited supply of modern Western weapons really demonstrates just how poorly Russia would fare in a war against NATO. Slava Ukraini!
Thank you for your work. The videos are some of the best detailing, summarizing, compiling and explaining available data. Thank you. 🇺🇦🫡🇺🇦
This video is great! Thanks for what you do! It's been really nice seeing the evolution of your videos!
I can't imagine how hellish it was for those Russians trapped on snake island. They were probably just waiting for a missile with their name on it
Average experience for most of them I imagine.
This never gets tired. Thanks for the comprehensive look at this. Slava Ukraini!
1 day for Mykolaiv, 2 days for Odessa, 3 days for Kyiv. All is going according to the plan… It’s pathetic that neither the Tor or Strela-10 could even take out TB-2s which are slow + big enough to see on radar.
Excellent use of top down with footage intermixed!
People tend to forget how absolutely massive amount of ru forces were engaged in first months. And, against all odds, Ukraine defense forces were able to repel
I didn't expect me to watch through the entire video.
Good job :)
Very well correlated and informative. Thank you 🙏. Slava Ukraine.🇺🇦
This channel is a beautiful thing.
Your channel is so freaking good. I’m a subscriber and watch and like all your vids.
If morale helps win a war then I would say the Black Sea theater is holding up ukraines entire fighting morale right now. Amazing stories. Now matter how the war ends Ukraine’s actions in the Black Sea have not only made but changed the course of naval history
The rescue of 'Conan' says everything about the Ukraine spirit. The ruzzians would have left him to die in the sea.
Your videos are so good. It's amazing what sea drones can do.
Oh hell yah! You make some insanely high quality videos! Always waiting for the next one!
The Turkish Navy and the Turkish Coast Guard blocking passage through the Turkish Straits for naval vessels in complience with the 1936 Montroux Convent kinda prevents Russian warships from other fleets from reinforcing the Black Sea Fleet or NATO countries delivering new warships to the Ukrainian Navy.
Sanctions that actually work :D
A very in depth and well executed video.
Thank you very much!
The amount of military firsts that the Ukrainian Armed Forces hold is pretty impressive. First kill of a major warship by a cruise missile of the 21st century. First air-to-air kill by a drone. And more.
I can only imagine what else they will do as the war gets closer to a conclusion.
Спасибо 🙏 this was very good 👍 слава Україні 💙💛. It is surprising just how impressive the Ukrainian control is over the Black Sea
Wow! Really looking forward to watching this one

The Russian Black Sea Fleet suffered heavily.
those oil rig operations were intense, Plays out like a Chuck Norris Delta force flick.

Good story !didn’t realize how big of a fight Snake Island was !

By any chance, will you be covering the battle over Donestk airport or Donbas war? It would be a helpful and interesting tool, in my opinion, for people to understand how the war got started in general and how the UA military evolved during this period and hardship it had to overcome.
i find this specific part of the war very exiting
Holy shit that's a lotta drones and missiles Ukraine is slinging at Crimea.
Great video, great summary, thank you!

its obviously a shame and im sorry Ukraine has to go thorough this, but i cant help but sit here and chuckle at how Russia is slapped around by basically ad-hoc Ukrainian capabilities. How long until russia either has no ships left or begs türkiye to let them out of there?

Russian navy has always been an embarrassment. Remember how they tried to fight the japanese navy and ended up shooting british fishing boats.
Hey. Thank you so much for this. Could we expect videos from the 2014 Donbas war as well or is the focus on the 2022 invasion?
Currently the focus is on events after February 24, 2022. Once we will get most of the key battles covered, it's possible that we will delve into 2014 events as well.
