- Cycling Plus' annual search for the best road bike has come to an end. This year, it's been split over four different price groups, with the winner in this category - £1500-2000 - being the BMC SLR02 105.
This video contains paid product placements on behalf of Witter Towbar Systems, Giro, Altura and Bell.
Love that you do a bike of the year in different price categories rather than just the one in the I will never be able to afford it category.
I now have this bike. Absolutely phenomenonal machine. If you're fit enough, it virtually turns 5% inclines into flats and I can now climb 10%s at twice the speed I could before. I thought people were over hyping the frame but it really is as responsive and comfortable as advertised. Acceleration is unreal. Can't fully comment on handling and descending yet as I've held back on both, but early impressions are it's not the fastest downhill but for what it is, it is very stable for a race bike. My CX bike is more twitchy!
Have you tried the Cannondale Caad 12? I'm hearing great things about that bike. It's at $1,300.00 US now. 105 shifters, front and rear derailleurs. Hollow gram SI cranks. Which are 735 grams!
I'm riding one tomorrow!
+Ricky McGill I haven't tried it, but I would love to. I've heard great things about it too. Let us know what you think of it.
Tomorrow afternoon I will be riding it on a 25 mile short hop.
I have the 2014 version and stuck some Dura-ace c24 wheels with 25 Conti GP 4000s on and it really is a super bike.
"This bike feels virtually telepathic." Give me a break.
+Nautishko You still have to pedal it :)
Love that Electric Blue, just wish it came with. Disc brakes.
+Andrew Hoffman I agree it's a great color.
I really like the BotY segments but these seem to be more of a best frame contest rather than the overall bike. Is it because the wheelsets vary by region e.g. the Cannondale sub 1500 winner comes with Mavic in Canada not Fulcrum in your video?
+Mike Williams Probably because most people get better wheels, and sometimes components.
awaiting a new review on the updated bmc slr
Awesome bike. For me Red or Swiss color will look better.
Is the frame pre-drilled for internal cable routing?
I like red and black color
Bought it 3 years ago - electric blue - after seeing this review - and I must admit I still love it - only adapted the tires to 25mm. Now looking for some new wheels - still in doubt - not willing to spend more then I paid for frame :(
Nice! got the same one too. Do you know if it would fit tires wider than 25mm? roads where I bike are in awful condition.
What about the Specialized Tarmac sport ?
Are you guys going to do a under £1000 pound category or have you already done that?
+Rik Knowles I think they're working their way backwards in price. They already did their overall winner at any price.
They named the CAAD12 as bike of the year. That's a bike you can get at around £1000 with 105 level components.
Oh right,sweet
BennyOcean I found the caad 12 very stiff even with 25m tyres . I prefer the ride of the bmc slr03
Rocky stiff is bad?
haha great April fools BikeRadar :) hahah
why is canyon never in the list?
Hodor?
2000 euros and no cable through frame
I'll pay extra not to deal with that shit. I'd pay another $150 for a threaded bottom bracket...
he says its got a 11-30 cassette so is it a ten speed, cus Im pretty sure you can't get a 105 11-30 in 11 speed.
+Steven Dolman looks more like an 11-32
It is a 11-32 with a compact 50-34, rolls up even the most daunting climbs. I was sold on this bike the moment I got on it, two words... Simply superb.
The 2017 BMC ALR01 105 50/34 11-32T is my number 1 choice. I've been told $1599 USD but I've seen as low as $1300 USD. Any idea where to buy here is US? Conte's in Virginia no longer carries bmc for some reason.
my guess it can, because if you see the technical specs on the shimano website, the GS Deraileur minimum cassete are 28, and maximum are 11, that mean we could use cassette ranging from 11-28 to 11-30 above. what it cannot fit are i.e 11-25 cassette. CMIIW
Ugly color but great looking bike.
