I am a 75yo man from South Africa. When Tom did this song I was a youngster. I now still marvel at this man, this recording, this video. Good visual quality, no frills, no effort at artificial enhancements of any aspect of the song, the performance, the stage setting. Recording quality beyond belief for those days and even now 50 and more years later. Simple. A man with an excellent baritone voice presenting a beautiful song recorded and videographed to the highest standard.
This man was under-rated. The singer, the song, the recording, the presentation all simply exquisite.
It remains to this day a fantastic work of art. A few minutes encapsulating the deepest emotion of someone who lost love and blames only himself.
A perfect gem of the music industry then and to this day. Blessed be the memory of Tom Paxton. I so hope relatives of Tom will read this. I feel the need to express my deep appreciation to someone who might really care.

Lost my wife of forty years after a two month illness. She was on a respirator for the last few days, and when they removed it, she passed away before I could even cross the hospital room to say goodbye. So, she went away with no word of farewell. But, after forty years of memories and our joint collection of momentous, she left many traces behind,

I was in the small basement of Cousins in Soho, London watching about to be famous folk singers. It was a summer night in 1967. The place was full and there was a space on the bench next to me. As a singer sang this man quietly slid onto the bench and sat next to me. He clapped as much as we all did when the singer ended their song. The man next to me was Tom Paxton.

With so many performers - of this song, but of other songs too - I find myself thinking "Why don't you quit messing around, and just sing the song?".

    Lyrics :
It's a lesson too late for the learning
Made of sand, made of sand
In the wink of an eye my soul is turnin'
In your hand, in your hand
Are you going away with no word of farewell
Will there be not a trace left behind
Well, I could've loved you better, didn't mean to be unkind
You know that was the last thing on my mind
You've got reason a plenty for goin'
This I know, this I know
For the weeds have been steadily growin'
Please don't go, please don't go
Are you going away with no word of farewell
Will there be not a trace left behind
Well, I could've loved you better, didn't mean to be unkind
You know that was the last thing on my mind
As I lie in my bed in the mornin'
    Without you, without you.
Every song in my breast lies a bornin'
    Without you, without you.
Are you going away with no word of farewell
Will there be not a trace left behind
Well, I could've loved you better, didn't mean to be unkind
You know that was the last thing on my mind

I love, as we all do, the simplicity of the sentiments, the memories we all have about unrequited love. So many sing this from a sense of anger, passion and so on, but that's not what Tom wrote about. He wrote from the viewpoint that it was all his fault, he did something wrong, he didn't understand his lover. As 'ccolemanification. says a year ago, Tom 'encapsulates the utter sadness and desolation . . from lost love'. It IS heart-breaking, and we all know that feeling, his plea has not been heard.

I've loved this song from the beginning, having seen Tom Paxton perform this at The Main Point or at the Philadelphia Folk Festival. Shortly after, my friend and I were getting on the PA Tpke, but too a wrong turn, towards NJ instead. As luck would have it, Tom Paxton was just by the toll booths, looking for a ride. So we decided to give him one, to the next rest stop at least. No room in the car for playing, hardly room for the guitar, since we were driving a Renault (pronounced 'Ren-AWLT' back then), but we had a nice chat with him. Nice memory brought back after all these years!

I was part of the Folk Music Era (mid fifties and sixties) . That music I played my Guitar many a times and still do now that I am in my mid 74. Every Folk Singers of that time I have it deep in my mind and heart. I never get tired of it. Those were the times when music of the heart flowed from the dreams, hopes and gentle Solace was part of all my generation. We love and shared our lives with such fervor, sentiments. And violence, dislike and envy was very minimal in our generation. We were more concern with peace, non-violence, we marched for the rights of the needy ones. And our music reflected what was in our hearts, concerns, love, for our friends and others. Plus the intense love and respect we had for our soul mate. The air of our music were reflections of the deep love we had for that girl or boy we loved dearly in our youth. And never have forgotten that love. I still remember that girl. Never have I had such deep love and sentimental in my heart. It was a love that never asked but gave with eagerness to understand and pleasing air. And smiles from our heart and spirit. I still remember those times very vividly. One could hitch hike with very little fear of being hurt, robbed, or any form of danger. Those days are gone. I hope that in times to come I will perhaps see that era come again. But it is only a dream or maybe not. I traveled most of the States and Europe in my VW Van. Also parts of Algiers, Morocco and parts of Eastern Europe.

Learned to appreciate his music later in life, so glad I got to see him perform in Beverly and University Park a couple of times, and meet him after the shows with mom and cousins. Just a nice fella, wonderful music, unbelievable how many years he played and toured. Love this song the best.

What a rich quality timbréd voice Tom has! Beautiful Baritone. I came here via The Seekers...whose version (as a group) I enjoy. I have heard Joan Baez and she also contributes some good musicianship to this song....but Tom? Well, he wrote the song...and all things being equal (quality of voice/instrumental quality etc), Tom wins "hands down"!!! Key of "G" perfect for this song.

Yes, I heard both The Seekers' version and Joannie's version before I heard this, and they are both wonderful interpretations of the song, but this is the man himself, it's HIS song.....

Saw Tom P. on stage, in Irvine, Scotland, early 1980's, with my sister Rose .
That's what we did, back then, as young wans, we went to concerts, every other week .
Met Linda and Paul McCartney, after they flew in, in their private jet, to their wee cottage, up near Campbeltown, summer 1974.
🎵 The Long And Winding Road 🎵
Linda sat with us, while Paul saw to the kids.. she had a ciggy, saying she only smoked O.P's .. other people's.
    Happy days indeed ..
Rest easy Linda, you lovely lady .
    🎵Oh Mull of Kintyre🎵

He did a concert in Santa Fe last night, 4/12/24 with his songwriter friend from Albuquerque, Dan Bolling, and they were great. He did this song and his voice still is very good. It is amazing how many songs he wrote we know. He introduced "The Marvelous Toy" by saying "I bet you think Peter, Paul, and Mary wrote this!" He and Bolling have a weekly songwriting meeting on Zoom every Thursday!

Some of the greatest songs were written by lesser known musicians. If I were a carpenter; The first time; Streets of London come to mind... but in the end the greatest and most prolific songwriter was Charles Wesley (6000+ songs all up)

This song takes me all the way back to Castlepollard Vocational School, Westmeath, Ireland, May1974. We at the Castlepollard school were competing in a multy event talent competition against other secondary schools.
"Tha Last Thing On My Mind" was our song in the song contest. Sung by Mairead Corrigan, Mary Connell, etc., we won. I loved the lyrics and the rhythm of the song back then, and for the same reason I love the song today.
