  • This digitally remastered instructional film was made for distribution among US forces to describe the Supermarine Spitfire's various roles in different theatres of World War II. The American commentary tracks the aircraft's evolution from the victory of the Supermarine S-5 in the 1927 Schneider Trophy to the Seafire Mk F XV and Spitfire Mk F XXI. The design evolution is depicted in diagrams and a wide selection of film clips designed to show off the aircraft's unique, and changing, features.
    Original production date: 1944-09

Apart from anything else, this is fantastic footage, and a wonderfully recorded soundtrack, which still makes the hair on the back of your neck stand up.
I wonder if Reginald Mitchell had any idea back in the mid thirties, just what an incredibly adaptable platform he was designing?

Watching the 1969 film ‘Battle of Britain’ with my dad, he would always comment on the Spitfires being wrong for that time (1940) because of their propellers, guns etc.

Yeah, me too.. 😁 Not to mention the Buchon... Looks like a Spitfire front end grafted onto a Bf109.

They were wrong. In 1969, most flying Spitfires had Rolls Royce Griffon engines.

Thanks. I know 1,2 5 9 and 14 off by heart. Cheers for the handy film to fill in the holes..

No mention of the Vokes filter, which would have been common throughout North Africa and probably Italy. It would have been a radical change to the forward profile of the nose, so I'm surprised it wasn't mentioned. Maybe they were all out of use by the time this film was made.

One wonders if this film was produced and distributed to airmen gearing up for Operation Iceberg and the (then) to be expected slog of Operation Olympic? Certainly could imagine this was useful postwar, considering the BCOF had MkX!Vs distributed to Miho and Iwakuni. Was probably strange for US servicemen and Japanese civilians to see the camo RAF and silver RIAF spitfires flying patrols along Southern Honshu.

Odd film as the opening titles make it clearly a British production with the B and C call number. I suspected this is just that, but has had the opening audio track changed.

At 2.27, is that a Vokes filter under the nose, which makes the profile decidedly Typhoon like? I've never seen this before, so got a bit confuaed!

It must have been a very late recognition film if it covered the Spitfire 21.
