@@minigambini361 ping depends on a lot of things. maybe his ips routing is shit rather than his parents using the device alot. wifi and ethernet work in different ways. wifi sends the signal to all devices connected to it unlike ethernet. your router will give more priority to the ethernet before wireless
Wow it just hit me, this is true most people that don't build PCs won't know that some motherboards don't have WiFi. I guess I've been building PCs for so long that it's second nature to me. Nowadays most people associate internet being the same as WiFi.

@@kazuares7212 True, but let's be hones with ourselves, this is a case were the customer is just ignorant of PC's past someone installing the PC, or laptops were either the seller will connect everything in place for the buyer, maybe including a cheap network cable, or they expect every device to just have wifi. On the other side, we, knowing the ins and outs of PC components even if the knowledge is basic will assume everyone else is at what we consider the baseline, without thinking that there's people who literally have no idea of a perspective so far from our own. The client is in the wrong here, yes, but it doesn't seem to come from malice, taking the case as an experience, I would add a WiFi dongle to any order that doesn't have an integrated antenna, one of those cheap but usable tplink ones that are like 10 usd on amazon, probably cheaper if bought in bulk, you can check it with the client in store, to be sure they don't want it, and refund them the money if they don't want the adapter, but then you can do that while having a short but informative conversation so they know what they get, and they know that you're not charging them a "please don't be mad" tax.

A good salesman makes sure of the customers needs before selling them something. You build PC's for Christ sake, you of all people should know that most people don't know simple things like this. When I worked at best buy, we would cary out a check list as we talk to the customers to make sure we get the customers specs before the products. Very easy to do. I recommend making your own checklist and making a bunch of copies. Ex: 1.what kinds of things do?(workstation/gaming) 2.need wifi?__y/n 3. Need mouse and keyboard?__y/n Etc.. I'd recommend maybe even making your own easy start guide like "step one, plug in power. Step 2,make sure your monitor is connected to the GPU NOT mobo (maybe even add pictures.) Anyways,

I had $2000 worth of car parts destroyed by FedEx, I went to my local FedEx, because over the years I've had thousands of dollars wasted by fed ex. I asked to speak to the guy who delivers on my route, and his manager. I felt like a Karen, even though i knew it was justified. So she checked my address, and recent deliveries, and she said, "oh, I'm so sorry, you got *redacted*, he's a washed up, grumpy asshole.", I said "wait what", she said "yeah he's just a piece of shit, only reason he's not unemployed is because he sweet talks management, and gives them sob stories", so she got the manager over, who i immediately started going off on, saying that if he wasn't fired, i would start a regional boycott, which i let him know I've done before. And the dude got fired in front of me. He started crying, it was so satisfying. At least $12000 in damages, and just because i got to witness this, it makes it all better. I'm pretty sure I get special treatment now, my packages are always spotless, and sometimes the delivery people legit hand it to me instead of putting it down, even when they don't need a signature. I'm living the good life. Threats work.

People don’t know what they don’t know. It’s important for the person selling the product to be upfront with all expectations. Having a checklist for customers is very helpful. They see all their options and choose to accept or decline what goes into their PC. This essentially becomes the contract and then service can begin.

Sure to an extent, but It is not the builder's responsibility to anticipate Every theoretically possible buyer assumption. Like if you go to a car dealer and order some customizations, they won't necessarily remind you that what you happened to order doesn't come with heated seats, or other addons that weren't in the order. Most Desktop PCs use wired Ethernet for internet connectivity and don't come with a wireless adapter, but it's an extra USB accessory you could get at any time. If they didn't ask for wireless network access, A builder isn't legally responsible for the buyer ordering parts without understanding that capability is in there. But also, they probably don't want to upset the customer of a $1500+ build who can be made happy by adding a $20 part.

If you're ordering a Customized product or a custom build, it's being produced from parts mainly based on what you are asking them to do --- You are not selling a commodity product that has a checklist of whatever features may be popular: it's not the same. Say you're ordering one of those custom Batmobiles. You can probably rely on the result being a drivable automobile -- the implied warranty of merchantability, But you had better get agreement from the builder about any specification of the product that you need to have. Like you cannot assume it is going to have a cupholder, Power steering, or certain conveniences like Air conditioning - no matter how popular they are, unless you told your builder that, and got that included into the specifications.
Client-oriented service may be the thing, but this guy is really nice by himself. wifi are not that common in desktop computers. because they are not regularly moved and usually connected to internet via Ethernet wire. more secure and stable connection and lower latency.

@@Funny___Dog what do you mean? the ethernet cable that goes into my pc is straight to my modem, which has 4 ethernet ports. put the modem in whatever room the PC is in and turn on wifi on it for the rest of house (TVs, phones and tablets). or do you mean the DSL port? all houses has that for modem to connect to internet, it costs like $20 extra for my electrician to put a new one in my bedroom while he was here fixing some new lights.

My computer doesn't have WiFi either. I connect to the internet using wired network connection. Requesting a refund for not having WiFi is just ridiculous.
Yeah, especially because WiFi is pretty garbage. Things like WiFi 6 have made it better, but it still sucks, and it feels like they just make up new WiFi standards every other week, so it's an incredibly confusing thing to buy into.

Listen, the first pc I built didn’t come with built in wifi, and I had no idea until I turned it on. To people who are e experienced, especially a middle aged mom, companies do not make the no wifi fact clear
That's useful for telling them to sod off but idiocy overrides paperwork. I literally sat down with a client and went over what not to do on the internet, repeatedly telling her and put in writing, "call me if you get a random web page telling you about malware or viruses on your PC. DO NOT do anything it asks." Three weeks later she lost 5 grand. I advised her to call the police. She did not retain my services.
I built my first pc without any integrated graphics and made same mistake not plugging into gpu directly. I felt so dumb. Might be worth mentioning to his customers. Scary when you can't figure out how to boot a pc you spent 5k on lol.

As a professional, should have warn the customer from the beginning that wifi was not available from the build when they pick their parts. They needed the help/opinion and that is why they come to the store.

To be fair, sometimes customers don't know any better, you could have informed them early on that this build didn't have wifi connectivity & needs LAN cable for internet access. Chances are they would have probably bought the adapter from you if this had been the case.
To be fair, if you're throwing money at a PC builder without knowing you need a cable to get internet access, then you're mad uninformed, or just stupid. You see, only mobile data routers are able to wirelessly supply internet connection to the household, so it should be common sense that you'll be needing another cable to plug into the thing that gets you internet access through A CABLE. Anyways, he should've told her to get her scrummy vagina off of the idea that WiFi is the best way to get internet access, and should've instructed her to buy a cable. Why would anyone inform anyone that a build doesn't have WiFi connectivity when 90% of builds in the world don't have WiFi connectivity? He should ask perhaps, not inform, but when someone speccs out their own PC, they should at least be informed of its capabilities.

They probably don't know about ethernet, don't have a port nearby, or a cable that's long enough. Now maybe the mother was a bit rude but for once cut them some slack. @@shapelessed Depends on the internet and your wifi. Good enough routers can make even high speed indistinguishable from Ethernet. Sort of like how people say wireless mice are useless because they introduce latency. While this was true when they first launched they are now equal with their wired counterparts. Even if wifi did bring latency, the ping from your internet alone would be more of a factor than most routers would.
He definitely should have made her aware that it didn't have wifi capabilities when he sold it, but he did the right thing to resolve it. It's good news if you don't hear back from her anytime soon, means it's working.

As someone who has also worked on a PC Repair Shop that does custom order PCs, this does really happen a lot, specially the Wi-Fi part, I started to warn them before even getting the parts about it.
I feel like this person obviously didn't do their research, but as a builder, you should have the information on your site. The people buying prebuilt PC's arent the type of people who want to be well informed about everything they use, and even adding it into the front spec sheet could help.
those two are probably the most common and annoying things i have to "troubleshoot". That is why i tell potential buyers where to plug in the display cable and there is wifi or no wifi included beforehand.
This situation shouldn’t be frowned upon but should be looked into. As most consumers doesn’t have the same level of knowledge across the board. I think it would be better if there was a small survey when people are ordering custom builds from you to see what they’re using it for, if their connection at home is wired or wireless. Surveys could be annoying but something along that line of getting to know your customer and have a better grasp of how much they understand.
Yeah, a lot of pre builds. Especially lower end ones don't have wifi, however. He should have told her that it can connect to the internet. Either with a wifi adapter OR an ethernet cable. You don't NEED a wifi adapter.

As a custom pc builder it is your job to make sure that the customers orders do not lack essential parts or systems. Especially if you suspect that the customer has limited technical knowledge to place the order.
Just a tip, use a non-descript box over the case box so there arent any issues with it having being stolen during shipping. And it adds an extra layer of protection
I think you should explain if something is missing from the pc and ask if they would want to have that component installed in the pc before delivery since anyone getting their first pc usually won't have that kind of knowledge. These days almost every device that can connect to the internet, comes with wifi.
On the other hand, the burden of knowledge is on the consumer, if you don’t do your research, eventually the least of your problems is going to be a WiFi card, custom builds are more for people who know what they’re doing enough to pick all their parts, but don’t want to build it or just don’t know how. An 11 year old really doesn’t have much use for a custom build over a prebuilt from an OEM like HP, as bad as a lot of those are. People are spoilt by their phones and laptops, they shouldn’t expect everything to have WiFi built in.
@@man5286 It's the refund threat that's annoying, custom PC shops don't always have the means to refund someone just because they don't understand the tech. Shops get stuck with a $800+ custom PC they might struggle to sell. They got a free PCIe card, so it's all fine.

The expectation of on-board Wi-Fi is extremely common. People think that because all of their mobile devices have it built-in, their desktop will too. I was once stuck on the phone not knowing what exact motherboard a customer had for hours walking them through all the troubleshooting steps, only to have them come in the next day. Sure enough, they bought a PC with no Wi-Fi card. It’s hard to explain to someone that if a custom PC’s spec sheet doesn’t list a specific feature, that machine probably just can’t do that.
@@outerik90 For a personal example, my router is in my basement while my PC is in my bedroom on the third floor. I would need a 200 ft Ethernet cable which would look ridiculous. Wi-Fi is often more convenient.
I made this exact same mistake myself when I bought my first custom PC. These days I just build them myself but back then I didn't know enough so I bought a custom. No WiFi card. I realised my mistake after getting the PC and simply ordered myself a cheap WiFi card online, which arrived the next day and installed it myself, and that was my first foray into a lifelong obsession with computer hardware.
Sales tip: Words like unfortunately or sadly set customers up for a negative experience; skip words like that completely. “Often times motherboards exclude on-board wifi to save some money for users who plan on using a wired connection. It looks like the specifications you selected do not include a motherboard with wifi.” From there I would offer an exchange (at their shipping expense) if that is in your policies and offer a PCI-E wifi card that often have better specs than onboard that I can sell at a markup.
If you put a "Fragile" label on a package, they will play forklift-rugby with the package. It's like bulls seeing a red flag. The more "Fragile" labels you put on it the worse the outcome will get.

Wow it just hit me, this is true most people that don't build PCs won't know that some motherboards don't have WiFi. I guess I've been building PCs for so long that it's second nature to me. Nowadays most people associate internet being the same as WiFi.

@@kazuares7212 True, but let's be hones with ourselves, this is a case were the customer is just ignorant of PC's past someone installing the PC, or laptops were either the seller will connect everything in place for the buyer, maybe including a cheap network cable, or they expect every device to just have wifi.
On the other side, we, knowing the ins and outs of PC components even if the knowledge is basic will assume everyone else is at what we consider the baseline, without thinking that there's people who literally have no idea of a perspective so far from our own.
The client is in the wrong here, yes, but it doesn't seem to come from malice, taking the case as an experience, I would add a WiFi dongle to any order that doesn't have an integrated antenna, one of those cheap but usable tplink ones that are like 10 usd on amazon, probably cheaper if bought in bulk, you can check it with the client in store, to be sure they don't want it, and refund them the money if they don't want the adapter, but then you can do that while having a short but informative conversation so they know what they get, and they know that you're not charging them a "please don't be mad" tax.

A good salesman makes sure of the customers needs before selling them something. You build PC's for Christ sake, you of all people should know that most people don't know simple things like this. When I worked at best buy, we would cary out a check list as we talk to the customers to make sure we get the customers specs before the products.
Very easy to do. I recommend making your own checklist and making a bunch of copies. Ex:
1.what kinds of things do?(workstation/gaming)
2.need wifi?__y/n
3. Need mouse and keyboard?__y/n
Etc..
I'd recommend maybe even making your own easy start guide like "step one, plug in power. Step 2,make sure your monitor is connected to the GPU NOT mobo (maybe even add pictures.)

I had $2000 worth of car parts destroyed by FedEx, I went to my local FedEx, because over the years I've had thousands of dollars wasted by fed ex. I asked to speak to the guy who delivers on my route, and his manager. I felt like a Karen, even though i knew it was justified. So she checked my address, and recent deliveries, and she said, "oh, I'm so sorry, you got *redacted*, he's a washed up, grumpy asshole.", I said "wait what", she said "yeah he's just a piece of shit, only reason he's not unemployed is because he sweet talks management, and gives them sob stories", so she got the manager over, who i immediately started going off on, saying that if he wasn't fired, i would start a regional boycott, which i let him know I've done before. And the dude got fired in front of me. He started crying, it was so satisfying. At least $12000 in damages, and just because i got to witness this, it makes it all better.
I'm pretty sure I get special treatment now, my packages are always spotless, and sometimes the delivery people legit hand it to me instead of putting it down, even when they don't need a signature. I'm living the good life.

People don’t know what they don’t know. It’s important for the person selling the product to be upfront with all expectations. Having a checklist for customers is very helpful. They see all their options and choose to accept or decline what goes into their PC. This essentially becomes the contract and then service can begin.

Sure to an extent, but It is not the builder's responsibility to anticipate Every theoretically possible buyer assumption. Like if you go to a car dealer and order some customizations, they won't necessarily remind you that what you happened to order doesn't come with heated seats, or other addons that weren't in the order.
Most Desktop PCs use wired Ethernet for internet connectivity and don't come with a wireless adapter, but it's an extra USB accessory you could get at any time. If they didn't ask for wireless network access, A builder isn't legally responsible for the buyer ordering parts without understanding that capability is in there. But also, they probably don't want to upset the customer of a $1500+ build who can be made happy by adding a $20 part.

If you're ordering a Customized product or a custom build, it's being produced from parts mainly based on what you are asking them to do --- You are not selling a commodity product that has a checklist of whatever features may be popular: it's not the same. Say you're ordering one of those custom Batmobiles. You can probably rely on the result being a drivable automobile -- the implied warranty of merchantability, But you had better get agreement from the builder about any specification of the product that you need to have. Like you cannot assume it is going to have a cupholder, Power steering, or certain conveniences like Air conditioning - no matter how popular they are, unless you told your builder that, and got that included into the specifications.

Listen, the first pc I built didn’t come with built in wifi, and I had no idea until I turned it on. To people who are e experienced, especially a middle aged mom, companies do not make the no wifi fact clear
You should make a checklist for your customers. Then you can go thru everything with them and the let them sign it.
That's useful for telling them to sod off but idiocy overrides paperwork. I literally sat down with a client and went over what not to do on the internet, repeatedly telling her and put in writing, "call me if you get a random web page telling you about malware or viruses on your PC. DO NOT do anything it asks."
Three weeks later she lost 5 grand. I advised her to call the police. She did not retain my services.
I built my first pc without any integrated graphics and made same mistake not plugging into gpu directly. I felt so dumb. Might be worth mentioning to his customers. Scary when you can't figure out how to boot a pc you spent 5k on lol.

To be fair, sometimes customers don't know any better, you could have informed them early on that this build didn't have wifi connectivity & needs LAN cable for internet access. Chances are they would have probably bought the adapter from you if this had been the case.
To be fair, if you're throwing money at a PC builder without knowing you need a cable to get internet access, then you're mad uninformed, or just stupid. You see, only mobile data routers are able to wirelessly supply internet connection to the household, so it should be common sense that you'll be needing another cable to plug into the thing that gets you internet access through A CABLE. Anyways, he should've told her to get her scrummy vagina off of the idea that WiFi is the best way to get internet access, and should've instructed her to buy a cable. Why would anyone inform anyone that a build doesn't have WiFi connectivity when 90% of builds in the world don't have WiFi connectivity? He should ask perhaps, not inform, but when someone speccs out their own PC, they should at least be informed of its capabilities.

While this was true when they first launched they are now equal with their wired counterparts.
Even if wifi did bring latency, the ping from your internet alone would be more of a factor than most routers would.

because everyone keeps calling wifi internet i have a ton of confused people ask me about it all the time hence my previous comment
As someone who has also worked on a PC Repair Shop that does custom order PCs, this does really happen a lot, specially the Wi-Fi part, I started to warn them before even getting the parts about it.

I feel like this person obviously didn't do their research, but as a builder, you should have the information on your site. The people buying prebuilt PC's arent the type of people who want to be well informed about everything they use, and even adding it into the front spec sheet could help.
those two are probably the most common and annoying things i have to "troubleshoot". That is why i tell potential buyers where to plug in the display cable and there is wifi or no wifi included beforehand.

This situation shouldn’t be frowned upon but should be looked into. As most consumers doesn’t have the same level of knowledge across the board. I think it would be better if there was a small survey when people are ordering custom builds from you to see what they’re using it for, if their connection at home is wired or wireless.
Surveys could be annoying but something along that line of getting to know your customer and have a better grasp of how much they understand.

Thats why you ask them before they buy it if they need a wifi adaptor.Saves you lots of stupid questions and arguments after the sale.

Yeah, a lot of pre builds. Especially lower end ones don't have wifi, however. He should have told her that it can connect to the internet. Either with a wifi adapter OR an ethernet cable. You don't NEED a wifi adapter.

As a custom pc builder it is your job to make sure that the customers orders do not lack essential parts or systems. Especially if you suspect that the customer has limited technical knowledge to place the order.
Just a tip, use a non-descript box over the case box so there arent any issues with it having being stolen during shipping. And it adds an extra layer of protection

I think you should explain if something is missing from the pc and ask if they would want to have that component installed in the pc before delivery since anyone getting their first pc usually won't have that kind of knowledge. These days almost every device that can connect to the internet, comes with wifi.
On the other hand, the burden of knowledge is on the consumer, if you don’t do your research, eventually the least of your problems is going to be a WiFi card, custom builds are more for people who know what they’re doing enough to pick all their parts, but don’t want to build it or just don’t know how. An 11 year old really doesn’t have much use for a custom build over a prebuilt from an OEM like HP, as bad as a lot of those are.
People are spoilt by their phones and laptops, they shouldn’t expect everything to have WiFi built in.

@@man5286 It's the refund threat that's annoying, custom PC shops don't always have the means to refund someone just because they don't understand the tech. Shops get stuck with a $800+ custom PC they might struggle to sell. They got a free PCIe card, so it's all fine.
its not her fault for not understanding that much and no fuck off anyone should be able to get a custom PC, its not an unfair expectation to have on her part, virtually every device that is not a custom PC comes with wifi built in.

when you get told by electrician that it would cost 100s if not 1000s to put in a ethernet port if your house/apartment doesnt have one you are probably not going to buy it like is pocket change or maybe the house has an ethernet in a parents room where a kid isnt playing on a pc. Just because you have ethernet doesn’t mean everyone else on the planet does. Bozo

No. Ethernet is usually included but WiFi isn't usually a built-in feature anymore because for gaming it's best to use Ethernet
The expectation of on-board Wi-Fi is extremely common. People think that because all of their mobile devices have it built-in, their desktop will too. I was once stuck on the phone not knowing what exact motherboard a customer had for hours walking them through all the troubleshooting steps, only to have them come in the next day. Sure enough, they bought a PC with no Wi-Fi card. It’s hard to explain to someone that if a custom PC’s spec sheet doesn’t list a specific feature, that machine probably just can’t do that.
Why even use Wifi on your desktop just plug the cable in?
@@outerik90 For a personal example, my router is in my basement while my PC is in my bedroom on the third floor. I would need a 200 ft Ethernet cable which would look ridiculous. Wi-Fi is often more convenient.
a "wifi card" is not "built in wifi" just FYI.

I made this exact same mistake myself when I bought my first custom PC. These days I just build them myself but back then I didn't know enough so I bought a custom. No WiFi card.
I realised my mistake after getting the PC and simply ordered myself a cheap WiFi card online, which arrived the next day and installed it myself, and that was my first foray into a lifelong obsession with computer hardware.
Sales tip:
Words like unfortunately or sadly set customers up for a negative experience; skip words like that completely.
“Often times motherboards exclude on-board wifi to save some money for users who plan on using a wired connection. It looks like the specifications you selected do not include a motherboard with wifi.”
From there I would offer an exchange (at their shipping expense) if that is in your policies and offer a PCI-E wifi card that often have better specs than onboard that I can sell at a markup.

If you put a "Fragile" label on a package, they will play forklift-rugby with the package. It's like bulls seeing a red flag.
The more "Fragile" labels you put on it the worse the outcome will get.
