The main cast is getting seriously overshadowed by that one jaffa doing flips and kicking people in the face. That is an extra who also put in extra. Madlad didnt even need a staff weapon.
Nevermind the Ninja, the guy at 4.04 who gets between one Jaffa and his staff, headbutts him and reaches behind himself to catch his victim's staff as he drops it. Little throw away shot and it's one of the best moves in all ofStargate.
This was one of my favorite battle scenes in SG-1. Love the use of the high ground advantage and sniping. And it doesn't get any better with the 3 of them at the end blasting the crap out of the jaffa.
@@Ragitsu But effective and makes sense, although headshots are the best, you are more likely to miss especially with a moving target. However a shot to the stomach is a wider target and you are more likely to hit and even if not lethal it will several wound an enemy and disable him/her. The fact that the symbiote pouch is located there and it will certainly kill an jaffa makes it an even better target to aim for since not only will they die but it reduces that chance of them being healed and recovering with their symbiote aid
A favorite scene of mine. Nice touch at the end with the 3 staff blasts IMO but would like to have seen more of the fight. This episode is so full of good scenes! Another favorite of mine is when Jack gets idea of how to distract them "MUCH bigger!" LMAO
I remember in the first season or so the Jaffa armor was very effective and required a lot of bullets to give the team a chance to penetrate. Even in Cor Ai Jack switched his MP5 for a staff weapon when they return and get into a firefight with the Jaffa.
A stronger bullet would be better. It would be interesting to see if off world forces would switch back to the .308, or something bigger to fight more armored opponents.
@@kyle18934 I think that's part of the reason why they went with a P90 as the main reconnaissance weapon. If they run into Jaffa, they have the penetrating power of 5.7 to get through that armor.
@@generalantilles2586 In the Pilot when they originally attack Earth the guards are using M16's and a 5.56 has far better penetration then a 5.7. The 5.7 while a bit better then most hand guns still considerably lack vs an actual rifle round. Now if they had switched to using .308 AP rounds those would easily go through armor that 5.56 almost penetrate. *Edit Just checked its actually CAR-15's in the pilot.
@@jerithil The P90 is generally also used on full auto, they tend to fire bursts that would mean 5+ hits, something thats not as easy with a AR platform. The P90 is exceptionally accurate at the ranges they engage with great recoil control, a large capacity. It's also smaller and lighter than any AR-15 platform, which makes it better suited to CQB. There is also the fact that the 5.7mm round it uses was specifically designed to penetrate armour, unlike the 5.56mm (actually designed to wound, thus been more lethal) which makes up for its lower energy per round. Essentially they both are effective against basically the same armour (lvl 3) at less than 200m, the 5.56 just maintains this effectiveness at higher ranges and can push to beating lvl 4 armour on occasion. Issue is accurate followup shots with the 5.56 take longer, you can generally land 5.7 hits faster than 5.56mm hits due to the recoil control, and from what we see, its usually volume of fire that kills in the show, not single shots. Sure they could use a .308 but most rifles that use those rounds are larger and heavier, have very poor recoil control, and tend to only have 20rnd magazines. They are also far louder, which would be problematic when used in enclosed spaces without hearing protection. Also need to consider when the show started using the P90, the SCAR-H wasn't widely available (especally as a prop) meaning they'd be using things like the MK14, long barrel battle rifles, really not good for CQB and from a purely show perspective, they are too bulky to be carried easily in scenes were they aren't fighting, a P90 hangs from the vest quite nicely. They do occasinally use 5.56 still, but not in an AR platform, Teal'c is often seen with an M240 in later seasons, were again he seems to use it for volume of fire rather than penetration.
Now this is how you show Earth actually has better weapons for ground fight. Guys lying down on a ridge mostly 1 tapping or firing short burst and jaffa droping left and right. Later on it became people full spraying and almost no enemies would die.
In this particular case, there's an awful lot of possible collateral, so they really had to be precise with their shots. Most times, they're not dealing with a mix of allegiance in their line of fire.
To be fair, im pretty sure a lot of the later firefights were like that because it was just more fun. Instead of bad vfx muzzle flashes, they were all firing blanks. In various interviews, different cast members said they had a ton of fun with that and would actively try to avoid zats whenever they could.
"We are good to go in 30 seconds." "Assume we do not have 30 seconds." Timer hits zero 35 seconds later. The damage doesn't create a noticeable change for 70 seconds. Nothing negative happened during that entire time.

This really demonstrates how the Jaffa don’t really have proper military training or doctrine. They’re outstanding in personal combat but they don’t function as well as a unit as Earth troops do. When those Jaffa tried to take a hill defended by dug in infantry with light artillery / mortars it was over right then except for the dying.

one mistake i noticed, from the other episode where the russian general has a gaul'd inside him healed the eye sight, so why doesnt this one heal this guys eye?
Because a "sniper rifle" is good in exactly one of engagement, instead of an assault rifle with correct attachments which is useful in multiple engagements.
@@TheNerdForAllSeasons modern assault rifles are only good for engagements out to 300 yards. That's why designated marksman rifles exist. Snipers don't work well within a squad, but every so often a squad needs to be able to reach out and touch somebody.
Yep plus the PSG1 wasn't designed for a battlefield setting it's primary design was for police and law enforcement hence the need for semi auto as you may need to fire rapid shots in a hostage siturition. Also the scope was hard welded onto PSG1's which is not practical in military settings as if the scope gets damaged the rifle it almost useless in it's primary role.
So I get from a production point of view why they used p90s they look sci-fi and what not but It never made sense to me from a in universe point of view why not just use m16s and M4s they far out class on range and penetration as well as modularity plus if you’ve got new units coming into the program they’re already familiar with the SOPs on them instead of having to teach them new ones plus logistically 5.7 isn’t exactly a common round. Then you’ve got g36s and that psg1 stuff that’s not common in the US arsenal and has arguably superior counterparts already in US service. Now I know it’s not exactly a realistic concept it’s just it would make more sense to Arm them with US military weapons not European ones.
SG-1 is one of the vanguard teams. They're one of the first to arrive on a planet, perform initial analysis and recon, make first contact with the locals, etc, and then they hand off the planet to another, long-term team if the planet has something or someone of interest. So the requirements of a firearm for such a team would be: 1. Small, so as to not get in the way when interacting with people or things 2. Look less threatening than a carbine or LMG 3. Remain lethal against potentially armored targets in case a hasty retreat is required (first contact goes wrong, learn something horrible about the people, discover Jaffa just over the next hill, etc) In that regard, the proposed NATO "Personal Defense Weapon," which the P90 competed to be, seems perfect for the role. Small, unobtrusive, non-threatening to civilizations that have never seen a gun, and capable of laying down some serious firepower.
It looking sci-fi isnt the only reason... Iirc, the US opted against adopting the P90 as a standard weapon, so there was just a huge surplus of them. It was cheaper to bulk order a bunch of a unwanted p90s.
