    The DC6 is one of the best multi engine transports, the PMDG sim with the Flight engineer takes a lot of the work load allowing you to fly the mission. Enough complexity with pressurisation, wet/ dry takeoffs and the many controls and gauges..very realistic simulation.

    This is not a name drop, but genuine great memories. I was very lucky to do CPL training at Coventry. I deliberately chose Atlantic Flight Training because of the group's propliners. I can honestly say it was a privilege to have to occasionally stop mid lecture to await the DC 6, DC 3 or Electra run up just outside of the building. I missed two DC6 flight opportunities one to Toulouse (I think) on a delivery of car parts, I didn't have a passport with me (I never left it at home after that), the second was to Geneva (I think), but I had an important exam that afternoon. I did fly in a DC 3 with them as well as their Cessna 310s.
    Mike ? who owned the company insisted students had to have read a copy of "Fate is the Hunter", I was lucky to have already been introduced to this Ernest Gann book and carried my well thumbed copy with me. It had been my inspiration years before. Although I was training with them, I was not an Atlantic Airlines Cadet, they worked through line training much as with Gann's book... very old school, eventually giving some very young crews to the Propliners. All of the cadets were very able, young new pilots and had a great attitude and outlook with a balanced view of life at the top and at the bottom! On minimal wages, it was nothing to see them cleaning cabins or the most mundane tasks one day and then in the right seat (or left) of a DC 3 the next.
    I have got to get this PMDG having seen this. Thank you for a great review.

      Thanks very much for the story Eric! I very much enjoy reading about other people’s aviation experiences etc.
      Sounds like it was quite the environment in which to train, must have been magical to be studying whilst being surrounded by some of these machines! That’s a shame that you never got a chance to go up in the DC6, but I’d imagine a DC3 is every bit as wonderful. Haha, like you’ve I’ve missed out once or twice on some amazing flying opportunities, just by not being in quite the right place at quite the right time (and with the correct documents hehe).
      I have a slight “affinity” (that’s probably a slightly grandiose term) for AA myself. Growing up I’d always wanted to fly and I was constantly checking on the availability of their cadetship going through school. I remember reading their job description and it certainly sounded like they had you doing the hard yards (by no means a bad thing), but the reward would have been well worth it of course!
      I’ve heard Fate of the Hunter lauded on so many occasions. It’s actually on my bookshelf as I type this. I’m currently reading about the first crossing of the United States by air, but I will make sure I finally get around to reading Fate is the Hunter afterwards! Again, I’ve heard so much praise for it, that I’m certainly looking forward to it : )
      If you did pick up the DC6, I hope you’re enjoying it. All the best and happy flying!

      You definitely missed out on the 6 flight, I got to ride out to Sparravohn and Cape Newenham, one way in strips for radar sights on the outer coast, it was pretty cool. We took off empty in around 1200 feet, I was standing behind the FE and I almost fell down when they let off the brakes.

      Ah nice UCD - I’m sure an around the world trip in the DC-6 must be great fun! I did an around the world in the A2A T6 a few years ago. I’m a little bit miffed I did it before MSFS existed haha; the experience doing it in this sim would be a whole lot more immersive than in other sims (in most respects). I’ll have to give it another go one day. . .

    The DC-6 is, for me, the ideal plane. Lots and lots of gauges and systems to keep an eye on and it's not so big that you can't get to some really neat small regional locations. And those sounds! I don't dislike the modern airliners but after takeoff they just fly themselves with much less immersive interaction for the most part.

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations
      @IntotheBlueSimulations  3 года назад +13

      Im more or less inclined to agree John! The more I fly it, the more I appreciate it. I do a lot of GA VFR flying in the sim personally, so obviously it doesn’t tick those boxes, but for flying some heavy metal, it’s a wonderful combination of brilliance in a number of areas. It provides a really nice challenge and leaves one feeling genuinely satisfied after a decent flight. As you say, it’s brilliant that on the one hand you can take it 1000s of miles, but then again you can take it into a small gravel strip.
      This is definitely a much more hands on beast than a modern jet! : )
      All the best

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations

      Absolutely Matt; it’s a wonderful and very capable aircraft! Much more interesting to operate than your average jetliner as well.

      I think it’ll be fun to try though and intend to have a bash at it, when the mod releases.
      My pleasure on the video! Here’s a little bit more DC-6 action, if you fancy it: ruclips.net/video/whdjKwmmNvM/видео.html

      Hehe, only joking of course. Naturally there’s no substitute for the real thing. Both mediums have their benefits though I think; it’s nice to be able to try different aircraft / demonstrate different situations and not be constrained by the bounds of reality.

    G-SIXC is still up at coventry as well as -APSA both in a dreery and sad state but.... both of the dc6's that are up there are being dismantled for thier move to SWAM (south wales aviation museum) its great that you could bring the air atlantique fleet back to life in this fantastic video!

      Sad to hear that they’ve been left to decay (always a shame to see these sorts of majestic machines in a sorry state), but great to hear that they are getting a new home.
      Yeah, I was super happy to see the package included an Air Atlantique livery. I was originally going to fly it for the review, but I figured the UK features just a touch too heavily on the channel at times (nice to explore other places sometimes). I actually watched a Just Planes video of an AA Jersey run in a Lockheed Electra recently. That was sort of the inspiration for this video (but Jersey still has weird terrain glitches at the moment). Always had a bit of a soft spot for AA; I used to dream that maybe I’d get in on their cadetship, back when I was in school etc haha. Never had the chance to apply in the end, but at least they gave me the virtual gig! ; )

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations
      @IntotheBlueSimulations  Год назад +1

      Completely agree Drarf!
      I’d certainly consider it, indeed I have made some tutorial vids in the past. That being said, unfortunately tutorials haven’t proven to be all that popular previously on the channel and as I don’t tend to enjoy making them quite as much as these sorts of vids, I ultimately moved away from them. My hope was / is that people can still pick up a few tips throughout my “normal” videos, but perhaps I ought to explain things more explicitly from time to time. Anyway as I say, I *may* make some more tutorials in the future, but that would be contingent on having the free time to do so (and right now I’m very short of any free time haha).

      @@IntotheBlueSimulations Funnily enough if it wasn't for the Isle of Man Tourist Trophy, I wouldn't even know the island. Well at least I wouldn't have heard of it at a young age.
      Anyways these races are mental though. A bit too sketchy for my gut, but well I'm not attending.
      Well the price of the DC-6 is justified, however it's too much for me.
      I don't play the game enough and don't fly airliners enough, to actually justify spending that much.
      I'm still out here hoping for a study level version of Scrappy and I'd happily pay for that.

      Yeah, very sketchy indeed! You really do have to have brass b*lls to pull off something like that. Usually when I watch flying vids, motor racing vids etc I think “yeah, I reckon my brain could process that”; but when I watch the TT footage, I can’t even keep up with what I’m seeing on the screen haha. Scary, but seriously impressive!
      Fair enough. Totally understandable. The DC-6 quality justifies the price, but it’s only worth the money if you get decent usage out of it. Otherwise it’s a lot of cash, for it to sit gathering dust in your virtual hangar haha.

      @@IntotheBlueSimulations There's one more thing, that I can't really comprehend... Aerobatics.
      You know watching Kirby Chambliss doing mental stuff in the air with his Edge 540. It (somewhat) looks understandable from the outside, but you need to put yourself in the pilot's seat and it's a completely different story.
      I tried doing some Aerobatics with the Extra 330 in the game and well it wasn't good.
      I don't even know, how people even keep their planes properly in control during these stunts.
      Well, I guess that's what makes it so interesting.

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations
      @IntotheBlueSimulations  3 года назад

      Yeah, that sort of thing is seriously impressive! I’ve done a little bit of aerobatics over the years, but pretty casual. What those guys (and girls) get up to is incredible. I presume at least some of it becomes muscle memory as much as anything; what really gets me is the g-forces! It’s so debilitating to your mental capacity, pulling significant g - makes me wonder how people competently dog fight as well. I suppose you become conditioned to some degree, but it’s still a physical assault on the body.
      As with most skills, there’s always someone who’s just better than us mere mortals XD

    A year late but thanks for a nice video. After the DC-3 left me wanting more i jumped on the sale on MP. While i am not a fan of the MP due to the slow updates, i am utterly happy with the purchase. This is hands down the best GA i own. I say that GA tongue in cheek but i mainly fly the A, doing cargo ops like the Everts DC-6's landing on dirt strips etc.
    It just looks like the 736, realy solid, polished and with a proper feel of innertia.
    Specially that feel when you slow down and you really feel those ailerons and elevator lose effectivenes, really something that lacks on most planes.
    The FE ai is a blast and really gives that feeling of teamwork in the cockpit. The sounds are perhaps a bit too smooth externaly, more of a subdued drone, but pleasant to listen too.
    I really enjoy flying this thing at like an oversized bushplane 1500-3000feet agl. Watching the world glide by. the EFB is easy to use and the Gyropilot is quite straight forward.
    Really starting to enjoy PMDG, this is my second purchase and like the 737 i think this is really is a plane that sets a bar in MFS. I am a big fan of Just FLight their planes and even those in my opinion are not at this level. Close but not fully there.
    Already 25 hours on this frame. Really nice with the hours and maintainence on the EFB too.
    one thing that i noticed compared to the L1049 is that PMDG opted for the handover state as cold and dark where a groundcrew has done a warm-up, and the plane is handed over with most non importand switches and functions already set. So getting ready to startup is pretty fast. A small detail, but makes quite a difference.

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations
      @IntotheBlueSimulations  Год назад +1

      Haha, it must be quite jarring to go back and forth between my content - I sound quite different and certainly the quality of the videos is quite different between the years. That being said, I very much enjoyed this trip at the time, so I’m glad you did also!
      The DC-6 is indeed excellent, still one of the best aircraft in the sim (in my opinion). PMDG are certainly throughly deserving of their reputation; there may have been a little bit of controversy recently, but they certainly now how to make a quality addon haha.
      I think one of the best things about the Cloudmaster, is just how versatile of an aircraft it is. Just as at home crossing the Atlantic, as it is landing on a short gravel strip in the middle of nowhere (I enjoy using it more like a bush plane also hehe).
      I don’t know whether you caught my Christmas DC-6 video last year - might be of interest over the festive period ; )

Not quite sure how best to present that sort of thing though. A livestream springs to mind, but I’m not sure I have it in me to be “entertaining” for that long. Yeah, originally the intent was to have a lot more tutorial-based content on the channel and whilst I do still intend to make some from time to time, it’s not the most enjoyable content to make. My hope is that with videos like this 1) they’re a bit more “entertaining” and 2) they act somewhat as a practical lesson at the same time. More “learning by doing” as it were. I enjoy making them much more as I say and that’s important I think for the longevity of the channel.

      That’s one of the reasons I’m loving the DC6. It might be virtual, but it still offers up a great challenge and an opportunity to do the sort of flying that isn’t really practiced any more. I have to say, I do find it very satisfying getting it from A to B in a reasonable fashion haha. Hats off to the guys that had / have to do it for real!
      As I think I mentioned at the end of the video, hands down one of the best flights I’ve had in the sim to date. Everything is really starting to come together and I think that came across nicely in the video.

      I may have got a little bit lucky with this one Mark ; )
      I have to say, I find it a very tricky aircraft to land without even a little bounce. I guess to some degree it’s just a case of getting used to a new technique though. I remembered you saying that you were finding it tricky to land in a crosswind, so those comments were actually going through my head as I was flying it down the final approach in this video haha XD
      Overall I found the crosswind handling ok myself, I was pleasantly surprised in fact (it was only 12kts or so in fairness though - according to the real world conditions anyway). One thing I did notice, that perhaps wasn’t totally clear in the video; the wing was very easily picked up by the crosswind (to the point of the right main landing gear actually coming back off the ground). Made the rollout rather tricky. That seems to affect a lot of aircraft in the sim, unrealistically so I think.
      Still, if you want to watch the video a couple more times, please don’t let me stop you! ; )
      Yep. I think my top 3 at the moment would be the DC6, the Arrow and the Stearman. All excellent. Although only the DC6 has been getting a look in recently haha.

    Great video and finally an accent that's not annoying and easy to understand. How did you flight plan? Did you use real-life then do a direct flight? I had no idea about the localizer stuff. Can you get that info from the game or just in real life? I usually only select an airport to arrive and depart, then just follow what they tell me. It's irritating that they keep you so high for so long, then if you improvise, they yell at you for being below assigned altitude etc. They'll keep you at the highest altitude then bring you down from 16,000 to 2600 in around a couple minutes, totally annoying.
    How did you decend from 12000 to 3000? Did you use something on that gyro machine to set a decent rate? I usually hit 26 inches option then trim to around 1500 or so per minute, but I don't know how to really fly. Did you use localizer data from 3000 to landing strip? I remember you saying a glide plane, did you use instrument settings or do you actually know what to do? If so, how did you acuire this data? Thanks!

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations
      @IntotheBlueSimulations  2 года назад

      Hi Rage,
      Haha, it’s funny how polarising my accent is; some people like it and some people hate it - I’m glad you’re in the former category anyway : P
      For this particular flight, I used a website called Skyvector. I highly recommend checking it out, it’s a real-world flight planning tool and can be accessed for free + without a subscription etc. So I planned the flight using that and similarly that is where I obtained all of the data for the navigation aids I used (including the ILS). This can all be done in the sim, but it’s much easier (and more accurate) to do externally I would say.
      If you want to get Navigation info in-game, you can do so via the World Map. Click on the “More” option in the bottom left and then click on “Filters” (if memory serves me correctly). There will be an option to turn navigation aids on and off. With them turned on, you can click on them on the map and it will give you the frequency and some basic info.
      Sadly the default ATC is very broken right now. I generally either plan VFR, or (more often than not) don’t bother using it at all. The downside of course is that you won’t be provided with any guidance and will have to navigate laterally and vertically yourself (but that’s preferable to being held high and then having to make a dirty dive - particularly in something like the DC6).
      Your method of descending is just fine, but you can indeed make life easier for yourself. The Gyro Pilot has a pitch wheel and that can be used to set a constant rate of descent (you would have seen me doing this throughout the video hopefully) - it makes for a much reduced workload. So I used that for the descent and planned on a descent rate of 1,000fpm. You will need 5 (nautical) miles for every 1,000ft you need to descend and then I would suggest adding an extra 20 miles onto that (at least), to give some room for error and time to slow down etc.
      To fly the ILS, again I obtained the frequency from Skyvector and then used the Gyro Pilot to follow both the localiser and the glideslope until I was visual with the runway (the gyropilot has an approach mode and again, hopefully you might have seen me activate this during the video).
      I hope all of that helps somewhat. I realise it might not sound very straightforward if you’re still getting used to things. PMDG actually has an excellent series of RUclips tutorials on their channel that are well worth a watch, but I have a couple of other DC-6 videos as well ; )
      Cheers and all the best! : )

      Thank you sir! I somewhat based the flight off a real-world one. I know that Air Atlantique used to do these sorts of runs down to the Channel Islands and that was the original flight planned for this video, however the Channel Islands in the sim don’t look great, so I opted to switch them out for the Isle of Man instead (the flight distance is shorter to be fair, but not massively so). If you wished that the video had been longer, I’ll consider it a success haha! I’m sure we’ll take another outing in the DC-6 at some point ; )

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations
      @IntotheBlueSimulations  2 года назад

      Haha, well the short answer is many years of practice Jason.
      I’m afraid it wouldn’t be possible to cover everything here, but you can essentially use the RMI to figure out where you are in relation to the navigation aid and then use the DME to ascertain your distance from it. A lot of the skill comes in building up a mental picture of where you are in space and also where you want to be, so that you can plan your profile accordingly. I’m forever saying I will make a Part 2 to my “flying school” series, to teach all of this stuff, unfortunately I have yet to find the time / inclination though. FSX is actually excellent for learning this sort of stuff - well worth picking up (especially if on sale) if you really want to get into it. The great thing about the sim of course, is you can practice practice practice and if you get it wrong, no worries! Learning how to fly an ILS is certainly a good starting point : )

    I'm really new to msfs, how did you calculate the top of descent?

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations
      @IntotheBlueSimulations  Год назад

      Hello Chris, welcome to the hobby!
      In a general sense, for most commercial aircraft 3 X your altitude is a good rule of thumb for when to descend, 4X for some jets (there are more accurate ways of calculating the profile, but it would be a bit too nuanced to get into here). For the DC-6 specifically, PMDG recommends allowing 5nm per 1,000ft of altitude, I then like to add another 20nm to that, to allow for the deceleration etc (which isn’t always an easy process in the DC-6). Obviously this technique requires some understanding of how many miles one has until touchdown, which can be quite tricky to calculate with the basic avionics available on the aircraft, but that’s simply part of the challenge of flying the “Cloudmaster”! ; )
      I hope that helps a little? All the best : )

    So with the AFE, if you so the settings for before start, and them ask the AFE to do the before start checks it acknowledges the ones you've ready set and only changed the ones you skip?

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations
      @IntotheBlueSimulations  3 года назад

      Yes, exactly Jbay. If you’ve already done something, he will skip it, but if you miss something, he will pick it up. It’s a great system like that (for the most part). The only weakness (I’ve found so far) is configuring for the landing. If you’re already at flaps 30 for example, the AFE will bring it back to flaps 20 as per his checklist (not ideal).
      Again though, generally the AFE works pretty well and means you can manually configure what you like and then run the checklists, which is quite a realistic way of doing things.
      Hope that helps. All the best : )

      Indeed Ronnie, a very rewarding aircraft to try and master! That’s strange re the Gyropilot. I did see someone else mention the same thing on the forums, but haven’t had a chance to fly the aircraft since the most recent update. Did you manage to get it figured out?
      As far as I’m aware, Simbrief does not have such an option (though it would, certainly be nice). Well, actually to be more specific; Simbrief won’t generally provide you with VOR only routes, but you can build up your own. That’s generally what I tend to do. I’ll have a look on Skyvector and plan my route and then type in the VOR designations into the route resection of Simbrief - it will then build the flight plan accordingly.
      You can of course also use the sims default flight planner and select VOR-VOR. This works sometimes and not others though, so I’ve somewhat given up on it.

      Was there a specific section of the flight you’re referring to? I presume you mean on the approach? It was more of an MSFS management strategy than an aircraft one haha. In reality (on a modern aircraft at least) I would have armed it much earlier. But I find in MSFS, arming the approach early can lead to the aircraft doing some strange things. So I like to wait until I’m almost on the LOC, GS etc.
      Does that make sense? Again, not a strategy based in reality, just my workaround for a little MSFS quirk that occasionally rears it’s head (and will hopefully be fixed one day). I will try and arm it earlier next time and see how the DC6 handles it, but I didn’t want to leave it to chance in the video.

      Like most things, VOR navigation isn’t too tricky once you’ve wrapped your head around it and given it some practice. There are definitely some good tutorials kicking around RUclips and perhaps PMDG will cover it at some point during their own tutorial series. . . (I do intend to cover it myself one of these days, but it’s probably some ways off at the moment).
      As much as I’d like to try and explain it all here, I’m afraid I don’t think I’d be able to adequately without reams and reams of text; and even then, it probably wouldn’t be very clear without any visual aids etc. I highly recommend going away and reading up on it etc though, it’s good fun, a nice little challenge and can be quite satisfying!

      Unfortunately for me, I seem to suffer a big FPS hit with the aircraft (about 24 FPS less than default 152). Actually at a couple of points during the flight I had 1-5 second pauses, tried my best to edit those out. My machine is starting to show its age a little bit now (though it’s far from ancient), but this is the first aircraft I’ve had even close to this sort of behaviour with in MSFS. I presume the in-depth systems modelling is to blame.
      I’m generally CPU bound. I’ve seen others stating that the aircraft runs very well for them (and have no reason to doubt that being true), so I suspect that the aircraft is very CPU intensive (looking at the in-sim Dev stats, Coherent Draw seems to be taking a hammering).

My guess is maybe the aircraft is very CPU intensive (Coherent Draw gets hammered on my machine) and mine just isn’t up to the task anymore.
      In flight I generally find it ok, but particularly on arrival, the FPS hit is certainly noticeable. Not ideal of course, certainly for videos.
      Seems I’m due for an upgrade. . .

      Haha yeah, that sounds like fun Ian. It's a shame it had to close; a restaurant seems like a good way of keeping some of these machines in half-decent shape and at least preserving them in some sense. I suppose trying to make an airfield restaurant profitable is probably tough at the best of times though, without having to try and stop it corroding etc haha.

    How is it possible to fly a STAR and comply with ATC especially when the DC6 takes over 20nm level flight to slow down?

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations
      @IntotheBlueSimulations  2 года назад +1

      Good question FoBy.
      I’d imagine a lot of modern STAR’s would indeed be difficult / impossible to comply with flying the DC-6. At the very least, flying a STAR in the aircraft would require a lot of prior planning, in terms of energy management etc. I’d be interested to know myself, how the few DC-6’s still flying handle such things; I expect they may just get vectors from ATC for the approach.

    Even seasoned streamers have been struggling with losing speed on decent and approach with the DC6. The key is to take over manual control of the throttles, and manage the speed yourself of which you did here. You managed the speed very well indeed. You're completely right to get it under control early. You're two steps ahead of the aircraft. All this makes the DC6 an absolute pleasure to fly in the sim, and as you say, its an evolutional shift in MSFS2020.

      I’m still refining my descent / configuration profiles (be nice to try and get a little bit more efficient haha), but playing it conservative certainly pays in the DC6! My only slight wonder with the aircraft, is whether it isn’t just lacking a little drag in the landing configuration. Even fully configured and with about 65 BMEP, the aircraft really doesn’t want to come back to Vref. That may well be true to life though, I have no idea. . . Interesting video to watch. Enjoyed it. Also interesting was the way you started the DC-6. For me, I absolutely have to hit the boost on "9," then the prime on "12." Should I try to start them as you do (wait until after the crewman states "12" to hit the boost then prime), the engines will not start. Fun plane to fly though--for me a beast to land.

      Haha, funny that. I find that if I’m not quite particular with how I carry out my sequence (as shown here), the engines won’t start either. . . I wonder what’s making the difference? I will say that I find I have to be quick on the boost and the primer doing it my way, otherwise she won’t fire; so presumably, doing it that little bit earlier ensures that you aren’t “timing out”. It would be nice to see a little bit more work on the start from PMDG, whilst it is already excellent, I find the process is quite formulaic (compared to the likes of A2A). The engine very rarely fails to start. Then again, maybe that is true to life of the real engines. . .
