The three main notes you should use to get that Goa Trance sound is the root-note (the key your track is in), a note one semi-tone higher than the root-note, and a note one tone lower than your root-note, so if the key of your track is in C, then to get that Goa Trance sound you should try using the notes C, Db (D-flat), and Bb (B-flat), these notes are in the C-Phrygian scale, which goes like this....C, Db, Eb, F, G, Ab, Bb, and C .

you can also just consider using the arabic/ double harmonic scale. Which are both alterations of the locrian scale, which is also the Phrygian scale with flatted 5th.

Totally agree with the importance of the sequencer - at first it's a bit hard to figure out since we are all used to piano rolls and recording with quantize...... I bought this yesterday and would definitely say that it's the sequencer, oddly, which makes the difference.... Thanks for the video!

Goa isn't necessarily written in Eastern scales (although some artists do for sure), but one thing Goa (that's composed by artists trained in Western music theory) focuses on is using the Phrygian mode of whatever scale the composer chose to write the song in. Phrygian works well for many other genres as well, not just Goa. Even in modern Psytrance you can apply the mode and get stellar results every time.

Same great sounds and filter response, just easier to program and work with in a MIDI setup. I do like the sound the Phoscyon can achieve, very close to the original 303.

Sure, although I do think Spire's filters come a bit closer in the sound - the strength here is the sequencing imho, while the sound is great, that unique Goa sound is certainly in the way the notes/slides/accents and gates play out if that makes sense :)

most goa relies on the phrygian mode which is just a minor scale but with flat 2nd i.e for Cm that would be a regular C minor scale but with a Db instead ofa D as the second note in the scale.

    • @HalfGodHalfBeast

I would also like to see some more technical videos about... stereo image, deph, widening, pan, mid/side, headroom, make/open room for elements... all this related to mixing and mastering.
I have had enough difficulties with some technical aspects, mainly because I dedicate my whole studio time to sound design, lately I've been having problems with stereo image, deph without using reverb and widening, these problems started when I stopped using virtual synths, all my hardware synths are monophonic so all the sounds I design are in the "center", one of the tricks I use is to duplicate the synth audio track and pan one to hard left and the other hard right, then give a delay of about 8 ms to one of the tracks to sound wide.
I've been thinking about buying the Waves S1 Stereo Imager plugin to fix my stereo image problem, at the moment this is for sale with a good discount but I have some fear in buying the plugin and not solve my problem with it.
      What do you think @dash?

      01. Download and install LoopMIDI.
      02. Open FL and hit F10 to open de MIDI settings.
      03. Select Loop Midi and set it to Port 0 in the Output.
      04. Enable the Input but DON'T enable any port.
      05. In General Settings Tab uncheck "Autoselect Linked Modules".
      06. In the File Tab slect in External Tools the LoopMIDI executable, so everytime FL Launchs, also that thingie.
      --
      07. Open an arpeggiator or a synthetizer with an internal arpeggiator from what you want to extract the MIDI notes.
      08. With the Arpeggiator selected, go to the wrap plugin configuration (the gear icon).
      09. Select 0 as the Output Port.
      10. With the Arpeggiator selected, click on the little green led indicator next to the channel of a Synthetizer.
      11. Draw some notes in the Piano Roll of the Arppegiator which doesn't produces any sound by itself.
      12. You will hear the selected synthetizer playing the MIDI Events from the Arpeggiator.
      --
      13. OR: with the synthetizer from where you want to extract the MIDI pattern, select 0 as Output Port and select other synthetizer.
      14. You will hear the notes of whatever arp sequence you did in Synthetizer A passing through Synthetizer B.
      --
At this point you can record these MIDI events, a way to extract MIDI patterns from built-in arppegiators. To do so:
      15. Once you did all points above, just click the REC Button, select Notes and Automation and hit play.
      16. All events in Source A will be recorded in Destination B as MIDI Notes.
      17. Once you recorded your stuff, set Output Port to none just in case. If you mess up the ports creating a redundance the DAW freezes.
      --
      Hope this help.

This is just conjecture, but I think the name "Phoscyon" is a play on words, 'faux' or imitation, and 'scion' a descendant of a notable family. The Roland TB303 is arguably synthesizer royalty. With this VST being an imitation of that, the name makes sense.

I didn't expect a reply that quickly. I have a question. I've been using the Phoscyon for a while now, but I haven't been able to figure out how to save a pattern to a specific note on the piano roll. For example, I write a pattern, save it so that it plays when I hold down the C3 key. Then I write a variation on that pattern and save it so that it plays when D3 is triggered. According to D16, it is possible. In fact, there are already several stock patterns already saved to notes. I can't seem to figure out how to over write them, and write my own.
Thanks in advance if you know the solution.

hi @dash, yesterday I spend all day messing with the d16 phoscyon and I was overwhelmed by the results I got, I chose the d16 because of midi out, I recorded the d16 midi out and sent this midi to my acid box (korg monologue), then I sent the d16 audio output to the audio input of the monologue to process the d16 audio with the monologue screaming filter and overdrive and... WoW MoMeNt... just added one more trick to my arsenal.
I was already quite happy with the acid lines from my monologue, the screaming filter and drive is prefect for acid lines, monologue has no accent but I can emulate it with the internal sequencer, I program "patch" env int to sequencer and turn int by hand, therefore having accent where there is no sequencer p-lock.
@dash, have u tried korg monologue? What do you think of it as a 303 emulator?
I just heard the real deal once and over 10 years ago, I have no notion of what is its characteristic sound without any processing and mastering.

Check out Muon Tau Bassline, it's ok but it doesn't quite have the sequencing the same and the sound is a little bit off imo

Try Reaper, it's 100% free to try and I think also free for non-commercial use :)

You can often get a good DAW for free when you buy a soundcard. I remember I got a lite version of Ableton to my Focusrite.

It costs a fair amount considering the other options, it's about half the price of the other most recommended 303 plugin and Roland's own plugin requires a subscription model :)

alot of money? it usually costs €61.46 and that is cheap, but now it only costs €43.03. There are alot of other VSTs that costs ALOT more

I said in the video, I'm concentrating here on sequencing style more than sound design. Also you're welcome to put distortion on everything because apparently IM does it, I wouldn't be so sure myself ;)

@@epycedits I entered a D which is in the scale, but I said E by mistake. For someone who's original criticism was "less talk" etc, it's ironic that you're watching my entire video to find something as petty as a speech mistake to criticize on. Good day
