    I also prefer the Sony...it's my go-to mini HD cam for a variety of tasks. But the excellent side mount, rotating lens, laser, large lockable button and water resistance on the Contour Roam 2 are very attractive if all you want is a purpose built simple helmet cam.

    This is precisely why I sub to this channel. My local bike shop had a blistering offer on the Roam cameras and I was seriously considering buying one for insurance protection, but I would never in a million years have thought that a camera with such a good reputation as the Roam, would perform so poorly in the dark. Money saved. Thanks given.

  • @Techmoan
    @Techmoan  11 лет назад

    No, it's just a standard camera, no looping function, no auto stop-start. If you want these functions, you'll need a different camera.

  • @Techmoan
    @Techmoan  11 лет назад

    Yes, it's best to use it before you set off indoors. You need to be able to see it shine off a wall in front of you.

    At least you are prepared. Its a great camera for the money.

    I haven't heard from anyone else having problems. Make sure you give the link time to load up. Perhaps you have some kind of blocker enabled.

    Importing to the UK from Monoprice would double the cost of the MHD, once postage, import duty, and tax are added, making it uneconomical.

  • @Techmoan
    @Techmoan  11 лет назад

    Seems like a strange reason to avoid them - the camera is just as good today as it was last month. I've stocked up on extra mounts and will be looking to get a Contour +2 if I see any good deals. The Contour is a great camera.

    It's his voice. Reminiscent of Ringo narrating Thomas the Tank Engine, very smooth and relaxing. I also like seeing the area that he drives around in as I grew up there. Always love these videos. The more random the better for me. More coffee makers, egg roll cookers, and whatever else you have techmoan. Keep 'em coming.

    Coincidentally I just did a review of the Monoprice MHD which is the same camera. You'll find it in my channel.

    The SJ1000 video quality is definitely sharper and brighter over a wider variety of conditions.

    I haven't noticed that effect, but I always prefer to shoot in 1080p30 because it can be edited and shared easier.

    The Japanese Contour.jp website is still up and running. I've just downloaded the Win & Mac Storyteller and the .bin Firmware update for the Roam 2 from the site. Get them while you can.

    Great review. I use Contour PLUS mainly and ROAM2 as a second camera (in case it rains or I want to record different angle). On the roam to make sound better I use the a windstopper - a mini "dead cat" I have bought on ebay -inexpensive and there is like 10 or 12 in a package - will last ages.

  • @Techmoan
    @Techmoan  11 лет назад

    Well it's there on the Japanese site. RUclips doesn't allow links. I'm not sure how you can't find it though. It's pretty much impossible to miss. It's under the software tab.

  • @Techmoan
    @Techmoan  11 лет назад

    I'm a bit unusual because I have to swap mounts regularly to do these reviews. I've never had any problems though. I just saw them off with dental floss and then clean any adhesive residue off with isopropyl alcohol.

  • @Techmoan
    @Techmoan  11 лет назад

    It means I can get the video out about a week earlier without the over-dub. I'm shopping for a decent camera with a Mic-in socket.

  • @Techmoan
    @Techmoan  11 лет назад

    That clip wasn't shot with the Contour. It was low light so I used the shot from a Mobius camera because it looked better.

    I've got a video planned about suppressing wind noise - in a month or so.

    Thanks for the review. I love my Contour Cameras. They give a much better view of the first person shooter perspective when compared to the GoPro.

  • @Techmoan
    @Techmoan  11 лет назад

    I should do this. Nothing ever seems to fit inside my helmet though and I never have use for an intercom, but i'll see what's out there.

  • @Techmoan
    @Techmoan  11 лет назад

    I hadn't heard about this. That's a real shame. I'm off to buy some sticky mounts in case my camera outlives my helmet and I want to attach it to the next one. If I now see a heavily discounted top of the range model I'll still pick one up.....I never use product support or warranties on things ike this so that's not a concern to me.

  • @Techmoan
    @Techmoan  11 лет назад

    As time has gone on and I've managed to put more money into to making these videos, I'm now trying to cover a wider variety of cameras - anything that seems different to something I've tested before. A couple of weeks ago I looked at the cheapest decent action camera and now it's a side mount water resistant helmet cam.... If you need Mic-in then the Contour +2 has this - but you'll pay handsomely for the privilege.

  • @AllanSavolainen

    I have the previous version, ContourROAM and with that you record extra long videos by turning the recording on and then attaching USB-cable with power. Recorded extra long drives with my car using that and used it as security camera and left it to record my backyard at night.

    Don't know if they have fixed this, but I never for the date/timestamp to work with the Contour 1. As mentioned, I contacted support and they were at a loss once I explained that I was in the UK. If I had to replace this camera today (and won the lottery) I'd go for the Drift HD Ghost. It ticks all the boxes and is much smaller than the original, but, as you say, it's a premium price. If you want simple HD video on a helmet cam then the ROAM is the way to go & no horrible waterproof case.

    This camera seems to be the best you have reviewed. I like it better than the Go-Pro because it's so compact and light. The mounting system is brilliant and the battery life is pretty good also. Now, I will have to save up to get one.

    super review, but you could have different SD cards for different settings as the file that retains settings is on the card. You could also edit the TXT file on the card using a smartphone. You have 2 ways to do this. You can either insert the micro sd into your phone and edit the file or if your phone supports OTG you can get the appropriate lead to allow your phone to connect to the camera so as to edit the file. x

    I bought a Cardo Systems Scala Rider Teamset Pro bluetooth intercom system for my full face helmet and my girls. we both enjoy them very much really nice to talk to each other while driving. at the higher speeds hard to hear each others voice but still works well. but i also use it to play a little music when i drive to and from work its over an hour on the bike one way and nice to have music from my phone through the blue tooth and you can hear that at all speeds. Just thought i would mention

    This is an interesting review. I recall you saying some time ago that you wouldn't review more mainstream cameras because they were all reviewed elsewhere. You also mentioned that you wanted to focus on a budget market. So to see the ROAM2 reviewed is a surprise. I have been using the ROAM 1 for over a year and the ROAM2 hasn't changed much. Use a Class 10 card and pray you don't need support. The BIG gotcha is no ext Mic socket, so it's useless for in situ vblogging. The Laser is a godsend.

    I got myself a Drift HD. Sound is terrible but exposed microphone versus wind will be one winner. Got some footage on my channel. Considered a Contour but Drift was a little cheaper. Be good to see you review a Drift HD sometime. Your videos have been great teaching me about action camera's probably saved me some money. You're also from Manchester too.

    I've looking for a helmet camera that doesn't look like a horn on the top/side of the helmet and this camera seems to be perfect. But the bad night filming and some unstable image quality seems like a deal breaker.

    Another great review, Thanks for helping us make sound choices on these cameras, but I would like to see one without that fish-eye effect, since it can get quite irritating at times and you have to edit and crop to get a decent vid

  • @knoxieman

    I had one of these but sent it back, after a little while of use twisting the lens at the end makes it loose and it rattles and moves especially on a motorbike, low light performance was poor and having no screen or remote setting adjustment was no good. Got a Drift HD in the end which is for me a much better camera, good review though as usual but watch for that lens it will come loose.

    thanks for the review mat, do you find it creates drag on the side of the helmet it is worn on (does it pull your head around at higher speeds?) also does the wind noise from the extra turbulance become excessive?

  • @pigeonlove

    The file is not viewable on a PC unless you change the settings to allow viewing of hidden files. You will see the FW_RTC.txt file once you have enabled hidden files to show which you can edit on your phone/ tablet using free simple txt file editor. It is very simple and just make sure you select Y for the update attribute after selecting new settings.

    True, those are some good points the roam 2 has over the sony, only problem with contours though, is as you've said to others, if you want that with the same quality image as a sony, you'll have to pay MUCH more than the roam 2 or even the sony cost, still keeping my eye on the sony skeleton mount.

    I was split between this and the Replay XD720. The video on the Roam2 definitely is better and the prices (including shipping) was roughly the same. I was about to purchase the Roam2 when I saw night footage of it and it really disappointed me. Sad to hear that Contour has closed shop. Kind of a stroke of luck for me, I guess. Do you know how to configure the camera now that Contour have gone bust? I got the ROAM2 last week but it's stuck in 720p at 60fps... I have StoryTeller installed because I've had the original ROAM for a couple of years now, but it won't let me configure the camera, and it doesn't seem to acknowledge that I've registered it or anything...
