    A good mock test, I have no doubt Caitlin will be have a strong pass very soon.
    Obviously Pin explained the late signal being a serious fault, but didn't cover what to do in that scenario. Many people's automatic thought is "Well I'll just have to signal late and take the fail." The solution (whether on your test, or driving once you have your license) is don't indicate, simply to drive straight past the turning.
    If you are on your test, simply say "I'm sorry I hadn't indicated in time to make that turn safely and chose to drive past the turn for safety." Your examiner will adapt your test.
    Remember, your driving test is not evaluating your navigating ability, but rather your ability to make safe decisions while trying to navigate or follow directions. Your examiner will not try to trick you into making a bad decision, but if circumstances occur where you have to make a quick decision, they will mark you on it.
    More importantly, this is also what you do after you have your license. In the wrong lanes on the roundabout? Follow that lane and turn around later if necessary. About to miss your exit while in lane 2 or 3 of a multi-lane carriageway? Just drive on to the next exit and reroute or turn around as necessary.
    Good drivers occasionally miss their turning or exit. Bad drivers never miss their turning or exit.

    • @t-yu
      @t-yu 2 года назад +1

      This is true to a point; I don't think there's a serious fault for "taking a wrong turn" or missing one if you proceed safely, so I think it's pretty good advice, but what then stops the learner from just driving straight the entire time for an easy pass since they can't be marked down for it lol? I'm sure they're still expected to follow the instructions, so even if they can't be failed outright for this, especially if they explain that what they did was safe, they could very well still be marked down for it or evenfailed for not correctly following the directions. Plus, if they had done it correctly to begin with, then it would've been safe to turn so ultimately their choice to go past was because of a potentially serious fault as well (not signaling earlier WAS the fault). Not sure about the official testing rules so can't say for sure and I might be totally wrong but yeah

    • @damionlee7658
      @damionlee7658 2 года назад +1

      @@t-yu going to respond to your points in reverse order. The serious fault was not "Not signalling earlier", it was "Signalling too late". I realise at first glance these may appear to be the same thing, but they are not.
      If you don't signal early enough for a turn in a test, that isn't what you receive a fault for. The fault is for your decision after that issue has occurred. Your main decision options are:
      1 - Signal too late for the turn and take the turn anyway.
      2 - Don't signal for the turn and take the turn anyway.
      3 - Don't signal and don't take the turn.
      3 won't get you a fault providing you are driving safely and appropriately. 1 and 2 are going to get you a fault. But it is that decision to do something unsafe that gets you the fault, not that you didn't indicate early enough, of failed to follow instruction.
      What stops somebody from just driving straight? Common sense? If you ignore the examiners requests to make turns you will still end up at junctions where you have to make a turn, and likely ones with heavier traffic than if you had followed the basic directions. However, you may not make it that far, because if you are willfully ignoring the examiner's instructions, they may well just void the test. Bad news for the candidate, because if the test gets voided and they didn't choose to have their instructor accompany them on the test, they are going to be walking back to the test centre. Once the test is voided, the examiner will have you pull over, get out, and walk back to the test centre. There won't be an option to drive back. Not that a voided test is not a fail.
      The thing you should be taking away from this is that it is okay to tell an examiner that you cannot complete an instruction as it would now be unsafe to do so; but don't act the fool on your test and willfully ignore instructions that you can complete safely.

    • @t-yu
      @t-yu 2 года назад

      @@damionlee7658 Right, so if they signaled too late, then there should be another option 4, where you signal late and then don't turn, which is the only thing the driver could've done in this situation that maybe wouldn't have screwed them over completely. They were already gonna fail if they signaled late and took the turn, and they already signaled, so their best bet is to turn it off, apologize, and keep going. Not signaling entirely is cool if you already didn't signal late, but if you are already the driver that signaled, it's probably gonna be a fault (and if you were paying enough attention to know to not signal at all, then you probably aren't the driver that makes the mistake of signaling late, or else you wouldn't have signaled late and would've just missed the turn as you advised lol).
      Yeah, it's not wise to just ignore every instruction but my point was if there's something too difficult for you, you could theoretically just ignore it and apologize. It's not a fault to do it once, but minors like not checking your mirrors will eventually become a serious fault if you've committed them consistently enough in 1 test, so it's not unreasonable to think missing turns can fail you.

    • @damionlee7658
      @damionlee7658 2 года назад

      @@t-yu if you put the indicator on too late and then turn it off without turning, and there are vehicles around you, the examiner is likely to record that as a serious fault, and you're still in the situation of failing. The only acceptable choice is to not indicate and to drive past the turn.
      I'm fairly sure that my explanation of the option for the examiner to void the test was comprehensive enough. There are very specific items the examiner can mark the test on. This is all documented, and if you are interested you can look up the DSA DT1 documentation online (make sure you find a recent copy).

    • @t-yu
      @t-yu 2 года назад +1

      @@damionlee7658 Ah, if that's true and turning off your signal immediately and missing the turn is a serious fault as well, then the driver was screwed from the start and there was no way for them to recover from their mistake, and there wouldn't be any way to avoid it if they found themselves in this situation in the future. That's why I was a bit confused by your advice, since they already signaled. The driver did take option 1 in your list and failed because of it, because not signaling at all was not an option, so if they signaled too late and elected to turn their signal off and keep going for safety reasons, they're following your advice but would be failed anyway. If you say "next time you're going go to signal late, just don't signal and go past" isn't much more helpful than saying "just signal earlier" which promotes better habits in the future and is how you'd actually complete the turn. I was trying to find some way to salvage the test after they already signaled late, but if they're faulted for that, then yeah it'd be way better to just not signal if you can...though that's not amazing advice, because it promotes delaying signaling and intentionally missing the turn. If you're in a split-second scenario where you accidentally signal late, you're probably not going to realize that it's a turn you want to miss or signal earlier for, which is exactly the point, because in that case if you're even able to realize such a thing, it's likely you could've just signaled earlier to begin with.

      Right. I drove so bad to my test that my instructor was actually shaking when we got there and pretty pissed off with me. I knew it was awful and I had no idea why considering I drove perfectly earlier that day… but I passed with only 3 minors just a few minutes later!

    nerves are a horrible thing, I'm sure she will pass 1st time, if not 2nd time when she realises its not so bad!!
    I failed my first test in the first couple of minutes. assessor told me to park on the left, so I did, but pretty close to a parked car in front. they told me to drive on and at a snails pace I began to creep. she had to tell me to stop because I would have bumped the car in front.
    that's the worst way I failed my test because of nerves, the thought of reversing didn't come into my head.

    I remember doing lessons late in life because my severe anxiety and expectations to fail at things would take over so bad, but I had a brilliant instructor, and I passed my test about 5 years ago now when I was 28 years old. It's interesting to see that learners in your videos struggle for lack of a better word, with things I sometimes did too, because back then in my head it was only me that was making these mistakes and no one else was as bad as me, found out I was just being way too hard on myself and better at things then I give myself credit for lol I don't know if I'd have got as much out of my lessons with a different instructor, it's hard to say because I feel like finding an instructor you can gel with is just as important as the lessons, which might sound obvious but I've spoken to people before who are struggling to gel with instructor for whatever reason it may be and they don't think about opting out and finding someone else until someone suggest the idea.
    I think the way you are with the students is amazing, so much patience, always give great feedback, don't just focus on all the negatives either which I'm sure would be easy to do in some cases, and that's why I always find myself coming back to your channel for more, despite the fact I passed my test years back.

    i had about 50 hrs with a driving instructor(s) and about 30hrs with parents; over 7 yrs) eventually got there. Funny thing was i past theory on 1st try, then it expired, then failed 2nd, and past 3rd.
    Ultimatly it pretty much all came down to nerves. Even when i passed i wanted to just walk everywhere. However mother showed me the cane [or hairbrush, slipper etc.. we kept hiding them for obvious reasons] (this was before parents were told they couldn't dicipline children, or 22 yr old men); and reluctantly i eventually got the courage to drive on my own.
