Don't know if you'll see this as the vid is 2 years old, but thanks for introducing raw jeans at a reasonable price. Raw denim jeans are something I wanted to get into for a while but the price point was too unreasonable for my budget. Thanks for turning me on to Gustin, I just ordered a pair and can't wait for them to show up
Just when I thought I had too many vices. …. Thanks to you. I have a new one. Just received my first pair of unbranded Loving them so far. And I have a pair of brave star on order. 😊
I have both, Brave Star and Gustin. Both brands are high quality and have cone mills (still, although the plant closed a few years ago) and Japanese denim. Gustin usually takes a few months before you get your garment. I never had problems returning items there, but you have to pay for the return shipping, unless it was their fault (which has happened to me). They exchange if they have another item in stock, otherwise they give you store credit.
I believe there able to keep the brave star price so ridiculously low because of the size of the whole operation they got. I live only thirty minutes away so I can drive over the the store the got set up in El Segundo, only four minutes away from lax Airport. There staff, I noticed the few times I was there, not including the owner might have been 6 or so people. The "storefront" I'd say is not much bigger than you're flat. I also believe where they cut, assemble, and ship the clothes off the side of the storefront is as big or equivalent to it in size. So they more than likely don't have to pay middle man for assembly or shipping as well as paying only a small staff. Plus they can show you all the cone denim they got that they will use in the production of the jeans which I thought was really neat.
Oh nice, I would love to see the set up! Yeah, a small operation. Affordable retialspace and no wholesale would save them a huge amount. Seems they pass this along to the customer which is super neat! Thanks for letting me know.
I own two pairs of the gab Selvedge jeans and both are cone mills white oak denim. The first pair I bought, I got for $40 something. The other pair I got for around $25.00 and both had free shipping. I wear them to work in the oilfield and the held up (I’m really hard on my work clothes) surprisingly well.

Buy a pair of Unbranded or Brave Stars Jack. Don't just be interested in Selvedge Denim Jack, be a top consumer, owner, and conisuer of Selvedge Denim Jeans. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND HEAVYWEIGHT SELVEDGE DENIM JEANS, AND UNBRANDED IS SO COOL, COMES TO MIND, AND I LOVE THEM. BETTER THAN LEVI'S AND I LIKE LEVI'S. BRAVE STAR IS SO COOL TOO. I LOVE, ENJOY, AND FEEL SO DISTINGUISHED AND ILLUSTRIOUS, AND PROMINENT, AND PROUD IN HEAVYWEIGHT SELVEDGE DENIM JEANS. ESPECIALLY ONCE you GET THEM FITTED TO your BODY.
@@ghostmarcinko3938 I’ve always been obsessed with raw denim and I just got my first pair. I went with unbranded’s 21oz raw denim in their tight fit. I’m super excited!
I have a half dozen or so different jeans from Gustin in my closet and I really like them overall. You get a really great selection of materials for a decent price, and if you sign up for the newsletter you won't miss out on the constantly rotating stock. I do wish they offered more fits though, because even the straight fit doesn't offer a ton of room in the seat or thigh if you're a bigger person. They say to size up one size from your typical "vanity sizing" but I found you might actually want to go two or three sizes up, especially for heavier denims.
I tried to order from Gustin once and after months of waiting (plus delays) they finally told me that my order was one of the defective pairs and I wouldn't receive a replacement. Got a refund but after that I just can't go back to the brand, no matter how highly recommended they are.
Unbrandeds makes my favorite selvedge denim. I've showcased a few pairs on my channel. I've had the 14oz, 21oz and chinos, skinnys, straights. They're all great!
Btw the 1968 jeans were the first pair I got from Gustin, and they're great. Really classic looking blue jeans. I have the #172 denim, not the #68 denim though. The only difference as far as I can tell is it's 13.5 oz denim vs 13.75 oz.
Yeah, I have seen some good fade examples and have seen some folks are happy with their jeans. I had my hands on them and I was not overly convinced by the denim. Construction seemed solid though.
Just ordered some tellason stock on Amazon the other day can't wait! And some nf denim goes under 100 depending on size and style I got my super guys in today and paid 110 with taxes on Amazon for left hand twill
I have 2 pairs of brave star cone mills jeans and they are great. I also have 3 pairs of Gustin jeans, 2 cone mills and 1 pair with Japanese selvage denim, they are great also
All of my selvedge jeans were found on some ridiculous sale. I found a pair of black LEE selvedge jeans for $13 at a shop in LA. They fit so well, maybe my favorite pair. I’m assuming they were some kind of 101 but I wish I had made some kind of note. I’m on the hunt for new jeans now and have no idea where to look for sales anymore so I’ll have to drop some good money and hope the fit is ok. Thanks for the direction.
It's cool if they're not technically Raw nice ! do you have any suggestions for women's cuts? Or know a site/channel for women's ? My girlfriend is fairly tall but men's cuts are hard to wear on her hips
Hey Juan. Yeah, Mary was asking the same thing. I dont know of any channels with consistent content for women's jeans unfortunately... I am going to look into some brands who do good womens jeans and make a vid at some point. I think it is a good topic.
I'm a recent subscriber to your channel, and I really appreciate your content. I've been researching the Selvedge inventory out there, and was wondering what your impression is of The Red Tornado line of Chinese Selvedge? I haven't found a video you've put out on them, have I missed it? Thanks for the great work.
I’ve had amazing experiences with Red Cloud from China. The others I’ve never had my hands on. I find the availability and the uncertainty a bit big to really recommend.
I have a pair of red tornado 18 ounce, the one with the rivet in the crotch, absolutely amazing jeans. After one cld soak they turn into a dark rich indigo blue with all the white fuzz that you can associate with great selvedge. I highly recommend them, the build quality a second to none..
I have heard and seen great things on Indonesian denim over the years. To be honest, when the Indonesian denim craze started a few years ago I was really keen to get my hands on a pair but then there was a lot of weird stuff being reported on the forums and message boards about price differences between customers. I wont name names, but you had to contact them for a price and this would vary wildly. A couple of guys never saw their jeans also... in the end I decided it was not worth the risk. But this was about 5 years ago. I think things have moved on since then and there are some brands out there I would love to try.
They say most nearly all there denim is sanforized in there FAQ and in person they confirm. Unless specifically specified that there UNSANFORIZED in the item description, they got it sanforized already 👌
Great video as always. The one obvious one that you missed and you should investigate is mass drop. I have one of there offering they are fantastic. Less then my Gustins Similar quality of construction better material. Yes better material.

i have to say, i got a pair of the uniqlo and the gap selvedge jeans from the thrift store and they are awesome. they are a lighter stretch denim but they work great in the summer and i love the fit on both of mine. also i think the little bit of stretch keeps them from fraying as easily, but that's just a theory i have. was really impressed and didn't have high expectations. gap also has 100% cotton selvdege which i also found second hand and they feel pretty tough
Hmm, I have seen some great faded example and I know a couple of people that were happy with them. But I had them in my hands once and I was not that convinced of the denim quality. The construction was solid enough tho.
Hey dude! I'm looking for stretch selvedge(need them for work) looking to stay around the hundo mark and have them be a straighter fit with decent sized rear pockets. Any help??? Great vids dude!
Hi Matt, I'm a new subscriber. Thanks for your analysis & informed opinion regarding selvedge jeans & raw denim. In several of you videos you're wearing the same hat as you're sporting in this video. What is the style and brand of this hat? Much appreciated.
Cone denim isn’t closed. The white oak plant that made the selvedge denim and had the shuttle looms. It closed. Not sure. But I think cone is owned by some international conglomerate.
Cone mills denim is high quality but not exactly rare. There are hundreds of thousands of yards of fabric sitting in warehouses around the country collecting dust. The fact that the mill closed 4 years ago and you can still buy whole rolls of the fabric on eBay speaks to how much they really made.
Newbie questions here: Selvedge doesn't mean raw, right? The nice fading comes from raw denim wether they are selvedge or not? Does the jeans needs to be thick to fade nicely or is raw "enough"?
I don't think unbranded jeans are Japanese. It doesn't say it anywhere on their site. Like it does on naked and famous site. In fact, it says made in China on unbranded's page. I'm not sure if that is referring to where the fabric is from and or just where they are sewn and put together. Either way if they were Japanese I think they would mention it.
I was able to get my NF Cerulean Kasuri Jeans on sale for under $100. I didn't know Unbranded was a sub-brand of NF either, that makes me feel better about buying from them. I wanted to buy their chinos.
My problem with a lot of raw denim brands is that being a fat guy it's hard to find any in my size outside of naked and famous and unbranded. (There is williamsburg garment company, but in my size it would be a made to order and i'd be looking at $500 a pair or so) Most brands stop at a 40" waist, and i'm a 44" waist. Obviously the companies are not the problem, my weight is the problem, and I'm working on it. But all that is to say I don't necessarily care whether jeans are selvedge or not, but I definitely do prefer raw denim, so once I drop some of this weight I might have to look into the Tellason jeans.
Well done for non selvedge cone mills denim. I had some old tough wrangler bluebells from the 1970s flares that were far harder wearing than any other jeans I've ever had. If it's made with non selvedge denim of that quality, it's a no brainer for me buying good value quality jeans. Selvedge denim in my opinion is way overpriced and a rip off. Give me well cut and well made jeans like Lois jeans or some wrangler cuts any day. I've even had some George ones from Asda supermarket £10 in the sales that were so tough I used them in a metalwork factory. That's hard on jeans.
So, you've been a bad influence on me, and I bought a pair of Gustin jeans. I absolutely LOVE THEM but, they fit like an absolute glove....100% perfection..when I wash them are they gonna shrink and not fit me? 😪😪😪 I couldn't resist bc they were $58 and they're amazeballs!
Got a few pairs of Gustins and I'm pretty sure that if the campaign isn't funded by the time it "expires" they just keep extending it. They did that with my 1968's. I was worried that it wasn't going to get fully backed and they did just push it back until it was 100% funded. Currently waiting for my heavy 21oz Gustins that I ordered in November I believe. Covid-19 has understandably delayed their production unfortunately. I do like Gustins business model and I don't mind waiting to receive my pants, it gives me time to get more wear in on my current pairs.
from feedback I got on the vid from folks with Gustins, there is a month to 6 weeks waiting. Returns will be managed if possible with something as similar as possible but you need to pay for the returns
I own a pair of UB201s, and just got a pair of the regular taper 15oz Bravestars. My preference is definitely the Bravestars because of the patch and the details; but the Unbranded jeans are easier to find in your size, and have worn incredibly well. What's the next step up from jeans like these? I'm not at the point where I want to spend $300 on a pair of pants, but I'm interested to hear your opinion on what the next step is.
For 180-200 you start getting into some really interesting brands. Japan Blue, Benzak, Nudie.... all amazing... or you can find some on the sales and that really opens up at that price. Check them out here. ceearedee.com/sales-list/ Hope that helps :)
New to raw denim (about a year or two): brave star and Gustin are great. BUT! If you're a big legged, big assed fellow like me, neither of these will fit great. The Brave Stars (even in "true straight") are clearly meant for the skinny LA boys. The denim is great but they're so damn tight. For big legs, the Left Field folks are great. Their greaser and atlas cuts!!!
Yeh, I found Bravestar and have two pairs of jeans at 12.5oz black and their 18oz Slubverter, and their awesome Ironside 15oz denim jacket which is just the tits.
@@CeeAreDee you're in Germany right man? I'm near Brighton England. Shipping has been pretty inexpensive and even better when it smeaks through customs without a charge. Still works out cheaper than a pair of non selvedge Nudies for example.
Unbranded is not worth it after you factor in the additional $10 shipping, and in case the pair does not fit, ship it back for another $15, oh and they don’t do refunds, only store credits, so pay another $10 for shipping...$88 now is $123. Not worth the hassle, was lucky to pick up a pair from Duluth Trading on sale for $119
You don’t happen to have any knowledge when it comes to women’s jeans, do you? I purchased the APC Indigo New Standards and they are tight in the waist. My experience has always been the waist doesn’t stretch very much - nothing worse than a muffin top! But I have no experience with raw denim.
I think that you might get an inch or so out of the waist but not much more. Plus it will be kinda uncomfortable. I would be interested to know how you get on.
Just purchased a pair of Bravestar 15oz cone denim the other day. I took a chance, as I was not filled with huge confidence after reading the info on their website with regard to international shipping ( to EU...Ireland.). They appear to have adopted a stance of.... if they get lost in the post it’s nothing to do with us, so tuff luck! Anyway, I’m taking my chances. It was the amazing price and the chance to get some White Oak denim that made me go for it.
I'm uk and had a few jeans from them and found really helpful. I thought a jumper I just brought from them was lost. But they did say I'd have to wait 40bdays until claim due to USPS. Please be aware due to covid the did take about a month to come. Seemed to be stuck at Heathrow., customs I expect. Great brand and jeans.
Yeah, the way that their international shipping info is worded really makes me hesitate. Especially at the moment with international shipping taking so long. I guess they would get a load more business internationally if they worded it a little friendlier. But maybe they are fine with the domestic business and dont need the headache of international shipping and returns. I have had some experience with this and it is a pain in the ass.
BRAVESTAR SELVEDGE. They dont make the best jeans ever but its still American made raw selvedge denim at a steal of a price. I wont buy anything else. Maybe Gustin but I like Bravestar’s little details.
I can recommend these jeans for women. And check out the video for the sizing. Really well done. benzakdenimdevelopers.com/pages/womens?ktk=UEdKczZRLTRjMDQwMDY3MzVk&tap_a=23949-a716b9&tap_s=788040-80a7f5

You got a pair of the sumo II? They're pretty cool right!
@@liljuanito123 nooo the sumo iii.. Loving them

How are the 25s? that is too heavy for me!
What are your thoughts on Bobson jeans?
Seem suspiciously cheap but I’ve never US my hands on a pair so can’t really say
Where did you get your ring?
It’s from a guy who goes by fine light trading. Sadly not being made anymore 🙁
Unbranded brand jeans are very good (although I purchased 21oz which are just outside the price envelope for this video).
For 21oz denim they still have a great price.
Lots of indonesian brands are under or right around $100. Sage, Warpweft, wingman, and NBDN are one of those
I own a pair of Sage denim, great pair of jeans they're 27oz and if fabric is amazing. Softened up great, definitely looking to get more pairs

Nice, someone else messaged about Indonesian brands as well. You guys are happy then?
Abit skinny but good service and denim
@@CeeAreDee Can you do a video highlighting these Indonesian brands?
That's hard on jeans.
what's a good denim weight? something thicker than regular non-selvedge mall jeans, but not as thick as 21 oz.
14-16oz
for me, 14.5oz is the sweet spot.
If I have dark denim jeans should I wash it if I’m not a fan of fading, I really want to keep the darkness of my jeans
Get them dry cleaned instead
So, you've been a bad influence on me, and I bought a pair of Gustin jeans. I absolutely LOVE THEM but, they fit like an absolute glove....100% perfection..when I wash them are they gonna shrink and not fit me? 😪😪😪 I couldn't resist bc they were $58 and they're amazeballs!
Would depend if the denim is sanforized or not. If it is you’ll be fine. Great bargain!
Bill, that is a very sensible way to look at it. And waiting for what you really want is always a good thing.
Great video, with some great information.
Thank you
Good vid but would have been better if you’d managed to get the answers to the Crowdfunding queries you had.
from feedback I got on the vid from folks with Gustins, there is a month to 6 weeks waiting. Returns will be managed if possible with something as similar as possible but you need to pay for the returns
My problem is I’ve been trying to buy my first pair and seems like everyone is all out of stock
Oh oh. What brands you been looking for?
@@CeeAreDee I’ve looked everywhere naked and famous, brave star, wearegustin etc
get yourself a selvedge jeans from an indonesian denim brand, mostly under 100$ and got very good fade potential👌
Need to check the indonesische brands more closely.
@@CeeAreDee check out oldblue, sage denim, and carnivorous soul

Hope that helps :)
Bravestar slim straight fit is where it's at for me.
How’s the rise in those? Heard it’s super low.
@@CeeAreDee It is low.
sometimes h&m has selvedge denim jeans fpr under 55€
New to raw denim (about a year or two): brave star and Gustin are great.
Yeah. The brave star guys need to make a few bigger cuts. Left Field so make some great jeans for big thigh guys. Love the denim also.
Yeh, I found Bravestar and have two pairs of jeans at 12.5oz black and their 18oz Slubverter, and their awesome Ironside 15oz denim jacket which is just the tits.
I keep heating such good things about Brave Star. It is such a shame their international shipping is not really possible :(
@@CeeAreDee yes it is i have to pairs and you can fallow the jeans voyage
@@CeeAreDee you're in Germany right man? I'm near Brighton England. Shipping has been pretty inexpensive and even better when it smeaks through customs without a charge. Still works out cheaper than a pair of non selvedge Nudies for example.
I own the Gustin 1968 jeans. Cost me $84 after shipping and taxes
It's a good deal!
Unbranded is not worth it after you factor in the additional $10 shipping, and in case the pair does not fit, ship it back for another $15, oh and they don’t do refunds, only store credits, so pay another $10 for shipping...$88 now is $123. Not worth the hassle, was lucky to pick up a pair from Duluth Trading on sale for $119
That is a bit tricky with the postage and returns
Its not like that the security gives you the money. It happens to a friend of mine
I think you might be able to pay for shipping insurance
I’m from Dublin man, let me know how you get on hahaha.
Why not just buy a pair of Wranglers for like $25 (+/-) they last a long time, and are a damned good pair of work jeans.
Selvedge is an old style of denim that is thicker, more durable, and usually of better overall quality compared to your modern Levi’s or Wranglers.
I had some 70s wranglers over 3 years.. best jeans I've ever had by far
I wont be able to wait for GUSTIN ones as advised by you
Yeah, you do seem to get good jeans from them but you do need to wait a while.
I thought Unbranded Jeans were made in Japan.
Don’t think so. China as far as i know. Maybe Japanese denim.
BRAVESTAR SELVEDGE. They dont make the best jeans ever but its still American made raw selvedge denim at a steal of a price. I wont buy anything else. Maybe Gustin but I like Bravestar’s little details.
Brave Star for me also! They have awesome customer service as well.
Seems like everyone is super happy with Brave Star
If you dont care about is political jungle point of view.i have two pairs bat so long Mik
For a guy living in Berlin you don't offer much alternatives for european customers.
Are you german?
Damn i love raw denim but i am never sure which size to choose as a woman :/ i think the quality of men jeans is waaay better
I can recommend these jeans for women. And check out the video for the sizing. Really well done.

ConeMills has closed, I think.
They closed the White Oak plant that made the selvedge denim. It was shut back in 2017 sadly.

I hate that my favorite brand Nudie Jeans have stop using leather patches.
Good for the environment tho! Hopefully give some vegans a chance to join the blue brotherhood!
@@CeeAreDee The new look is cheap and isn't premium, the leather patches isn't hurting the environment.
@@Tiger24kicks I guess that the look is personal preference and leather manufacturer is a very environmentally damaging process. Nudie have always been dedicated to sustainable and environmentally friendly production and I presume this is just another step in that direction. Just like their use of 100% organic cotton.
