Hi. I'm loving your stuff. I'm 67, so I've been a fan of good denim for over 50 years, Selvedge was either easy or hard to come by, back in the day. Brands like Brutus, Falmer, or Lee Cooper had a selvedge offering, but selvedge wasn't a thing then so nobody knew. My jeans this year are a pair of Unbranded 18oz slub selvedge limited edition. I've just washed them for the first time (three months wear) and they are looking fantastic. Do check them out. Ok, so thanks for the vids and make them any length you fancy.
Had my eyes on those they looked amazing! Settled for some PBJs instead though 😬
Got these as well. Glad I did. Already sold out in my size. Only 1 month wear so far, but they're breaking in nicely already. Love the natural veg tan patch! Unbranded is definitely underrated.
Would love to see the other 5 brands video. That original video about the Grailed list you made is one of my favorites you've made. Passion is important even if it's not always concise. Don't sweat the length. Thankful to have learned so much from you.
Nudie truly was the gateway drug of an era. My intro to selvedge was APC in high school, but even the Abercrombie crowd at my school rocked Nudie. 2001-2011ish was such an interesting era for denim.
Great video, would love to see the rest of the list of course
Nudie is super underated I'm 38 now last year picked up 7 pair of nudie jeans and 2 Jean jacket. Nudie and Naked & Famous and A.P.C are my favorite brand
Love your videos! They have never been too long. They are appropriate to each individual subject you have discussed. Your videos are informative, witty and entertaining
Love watching your videos, short or even the longer one. I don't actually own any of the items you talk about but i enjoy your passion for the brands and fits. It make me feel like I'm in the game with your knowledge passed on to me and others. Thank you for whatever length of video you put out
Tim. Really appreciate you saying that mate. Cheers and a happy new year.
@@CeeAreDee happy new years to you my friend
Please, do the next five. I like the long ones. If you don’t have time to listen to the whole thing at once, come back later. You are helping many people like myself get into selvedge denim for the first time. I started with a pair of 17 oz bravestar and love them. Looking forward to trying some other brands as well
Honestly surprised this guy isn’t more popular yet. Very niche content and very informative. Thank you and keep up the great work!
You've answered your own doubt. Niche content targets niche audiences only. 👍🏼
@@bryanbt18lmao was gonna say this
Because he waffles to much shite and wears communist era hats not knowing what they symbolise or worse knows what they symbolise…….don’t ask if you don’t want the truth 😂😂😂
Matt your videos are not too long. Keep going man. Does anyone mention Naked and Famous. That’s my favourite brand… and it’s local, 20km from home!
Been binging your vids. Love how much you talk about denim. I’ve been learning a lot. F the haters. I enjoy your conversational style and longer vids too
Thanks for the video Matt. I’m new to to this Raw Selvedge denim world and your videos are super helful.
Big fan of the long videos! But also of the shorter ones… tbh just a big fan of all your videos, haha!
Thanks buddy. Really good of you to say.
Adding Shockoe Atelier from Richmond, VA to your list! Your videos are great; thank you for the content!
love you stuff m8, cant wait for the next 5. Been eyeing oni denim jacket the past few weeks, never had an oni denim before but they looked amazing!
I personally love the long videos, don’t let the hate get to you, the people that like you LOVE you
You helped shaped much of my first forray into denim. Just went full fledge and first purchase I just receieved are a pair of Rogue Territory. I've got a pair of Brave Star on the way (along with a belt from them), a pair of Kato, a pair of Naked & Famous and lastly 2 pairs of Gustin. Gustin crowdsources their orders so only one of the two have met the goal but the other is at 99%.
Thanks for your help!
You’re welcome, James. Looks like you’ve got a lot of projects coming up.
Definitely drop the part 2 video!
Plus here's an idea: I'd love to watch a video of you discussing what broader trends and insights you draw from the popularity of these particular denim brands.
Please make a second video. I would love to hear your opinion on the other 5 brands.
Hope you are also happy and healthy
Great video and video length, don’t listen to people talking rubbish.
Hey Matt, just bought some BDD stuff on your recommendation, superb stuff and Nudie were my first pair of decent jeans back in early 00’s, love ‘em. If you’ve got more to say on other denim I’d be watching…thanks, love your posts :)
Nice! What did you get in the end?
The BDJ-04 Sherpa…never really settled with a denim jacket before but you got me thinking about them again. The fit is perfect and its so warm….think it’s going to be a staple in the wardrobe for a while. Also picked up some B-03 Blue Flame jeans, again the fit is perfect and like you said a while back it’s got to be one of the most interesting denims I’ve seen! Big fan of BDD now.
Don't let them mislead you. Even the long videos do matter, since they are not full of fillers. Still a lot of valuable info in them. And then- how many of them did you really put out? Really like you channel- keep it up! You are one of the very very very few reasons for me to like Berlin- at least a little ;)...
Great video Matt. Bollocks to the haters and happy new year!
Matthew. Well said mate. Happy new year.
HebTroCo popped up in the list flashed on screen. I have a pair of their straight fit, relaxed cut, called the GVNR. It’s 13oz Canadiani selvedge denim, and it softened up very nicely - those jeans started to feel like sweat pants after a month of consistent wear. Made in England, if supporting local manufacturing matters to any Brits. Recommended.
They’re very local to me being near hebden bridge, my excuse to buy a pair next pay day
I have three pairs from Brave Star. Love them. Another pair on the way. A mystery pick!
Check out Gustin. Not sure if they ship outside the U.S., but they produce some incredible denim in all sorts of shapes and colors. Fabrics from Japan, US and Italy. All sewn here in America.
I stopped buying Bravestar. After trying out other brands I finally realized, BS-pants don't fit me good enough. What a pity, liked them
@@jurgenbrandt642 i also stopped with bravestar, i believe the low rise is not for everyone. Felt the same with Unbranded. Though i never tried the Bravestar jackets, and they look very good imo, and if they are the same quality the pants are, the prices are spot on
@@pedrohenriquemagalhaes4188 I have the Badlands Jacket. It is awesome!
@@jurgenbrandt642 cool! winter is coming here in the southern hemisphere, ill pull the trigger this year
Yes yes yes, the next five please.
Oni, Oni, Oni....!!!!!
I liked the long videos. Well guess you can't win them all!
Make long videos if you need to. Also love the content. Happy New Year
Also! The other five jeans!!!
Cheers Matt
Billy. Happy new year to you too. Thanks for the kind words. Gonna make that final five vid for sure. Take care buddy
I'm glad Nudie made the list, it's such underrated brand.
Haha. I guess nudie is bigger than all the other brands on the list together. But they don’t the props they deserve.
my fav ones, LVC, RRL, Iron Heart, Lee 101, Mister Freedom
Was sad to see Shockoe Atelier wasn’t on the list briefly shown. They have a workshop in my hometown of Richmond, VA so it holds a place in my heart
Heard good things about them and I think I chatted with them for a while years ago. Stoked they are still going strong.
Bravestar and gustain jeans my favorite nothing beats the price
Please do the rest!! Love you content 😘 🙏
Can you do raw denim tier list
Not a bad idea actually.
part 2 lets go!!!!!
Yes sir. Coming soon.
Excellent well-delivered presentations which are both highly informative and amusing for the few who're genuinely interested in the world of the clothing business. Alas, a few 'sub-zoology' specimens dare to make derogatory and vomitous comments🤮🤮. Report them IMMEDIATELY!! Keep up your quality endeavour CRD😃.
I have about 6 pairs of brave star all shipped to UK without any problems, they are very well made jeans well worth a purchase.
Hi Matt,
Happy New Year!
Part two please!
Happy new year to you, Chris. I’ll do the final five for sure.
Thank you!
Nudie was my first pair I had the black coated ones for 5 years.
Definitely voting in favor of part 2! Not sure where all the hate for long videos comes from - though I'm speaking as someone who works from home and has the time to watch them all the way through.
Side note: I recently picked up a pair of Japan Blues in their 16.5oz Cote d'Ivoire denim about a month ago, and the fabric blew my expectations out of the water. I haven't had the opportunity to see a pair of Momotaros in person, but I'm curious to see how they compare.
I’m surprised that naked and famous never made it onto the list. Maybe because they’re so ubiquitous within the denim zeitgeist that people don’t even think twice about them anymore. I love their jeans and everything the brand stands for, they’re just so cool and innovative. Affordable too.
Yeah. They didn’t quite make it into the top 10. Amazing brand for sure.
I’m interested in getting some jeans from samurai or iron heart, but I’m currently only 6 months into a pair of N&F and I only get a new pair when the old is worn out
And i really want to see you wearing those IH 777 with one leg up to the max.
I wanna know how many degree angle a leg can be lifted in a pair of jeans should be or normally.
Please do that when you do review video.
Thank you 🙏
Definitely want to see the rest. Also I like long videos.
I'd love to hear more about oni since it's maker is pretty mysterious and not much is shared about the making of the denim
Brave Star is actually not too difficult to get. I've got 3 pairs and had them delivered to New Zealand with no problems. Delivery time was about two weeks.
Great that it worked out. I’ve just heard a lot of nightmare stories.
my 10 favorites in no particular order
Oni denim
Samurai jeans
The flat head
Iron Heart
Pure Blue Japan
The strike gold
Studio d'artisan
Big John
Cushman
Fullcount
My size 32 regular taper 21.5 oz Brave Star arrived a few days ago.( Same size and fit as yours except that I had them shortened.) I ordered a pair just to see what the hype of these heavy selvedge jeans was about. Indeed they were heavy.
I struggled to button them up. Then had trouble unbuttoning them. Fortunately I could slip them off without unbuttoning. However, that meant I had to slip off the whole pair to pee. WTF. I am still trying to unbutton it. Using a screwdriver to pry the top button open is not working at this moment. Help! 😩
😂😂😂 yeah. Heavy denim just ain’t that practical. Hope it gets a bit looser.
Happy New Year! 🍾🥂 And yes we want part 2! Why do you even ask 😜
Who's mad at long videos!? Don't they know it's what the algorithm wants??!!! I'm looking forward to your follow up!
I'm honestly surprised there's more than a handful of dedicated selvedge companies left since "heritage menswear" peaked in, what? 2012? Of the ones you mentioned that I've tried: Bravestar seems really good. Nice high rise on the jeans for us tall folks. They even do 'mystery' sales from time to time (I got the pair I'm wearing now for $70!) I'm a bit suspicious about how they can do all they do while still maintaining a super low price point but until I hear horror stories, Im going to keep wearing mine. Iron Heart: props for being the first with super heavy denim for fanatics but their stuff is so overpriced. I owned a jacket from them and...it was fine. That's the best I can say. Their forum is super toxic so I'd avoid at all costs.
I'm surprised N&F didn't make the list as that's what I assume would be the entry point for most people into selvedge? They do a bit too many novelty drops for my taste and their fits remain low rise for some reason (and they're trying to push baggy, 1990's style fits now which...no. Just no.) but the good stuff is really good and their price point is decent.
Nudie Lean Deans were definitely my gateway drug to selvedge denim. Just got my first pair of selvedge from Momotaro
I own a steinhart, and yes some models are very good, just a bit too much rolex hommage, but good watches, i really like a particular brand in denim, it s called "Dao Davy", 2 denims 14 or 16 oz, their 14 oz denim "chevron" is amazing, maybe one day i hope you could try it.
Off this list I have a couple of pairs of Nudie's. A slim pair of raw/dry denim, and a 13.5 ounce selvedge pair of regular tapers. The selvedge pair were expensive but the quality is there. Japanese selvedge denim and made in Italy. What I also like about Nudie is that you have a choice of leg lengths, so no need for hemming.
Hi, been watching your videos and are pretty informative. Whats your opinion on the Blackhorse Lane brand? Cheers and keep up the good work.
Never seen their jeans but met the guys running it. Nice folks and really fostering the denim community. I like that!
Do the other five! And then do the other other 5 after that. Give us a bonus 5!!!
Haha... go through the whole list? Why not.
Would like to know more about ONI
My path in denim:
Gap (1969 collection) -> Diesel -> R by 45 RPM -> Ernest Sewn -> APC -> Nudie -> Iron Heart -> Momotaro
Considering getting a pair of PBJ
what are the thoughts on Double RL jeans? I found not much info online about them but at the same time it seems to be highly regarded … confused a bit
Please give us the other 5 and your own top 10 in another video! Dying to know your top brands nowadays
I'll take part two and any two hour video you have in the backlog
I remember in high school everyone had raw denim jeans I remember I found a pair of nudies at goodwill and that’s where my journey started. This was back in 2011 I still have that pair today can’t believe they still fit me 😂
Fun geeky stuff~(like your thinking bubbles read out loud)
Pls give the rest five a voice~~~
I love brave stars but I hate that customer service. As an American, it's one of our only real tried and true USA made denim manufacturers in that price bracket, besides Left Field NYC, WHOM I LOVE (and yes, both companies utilize Japanese and outsourced denim on occasion, but they also work with a lot of US denim mills and their production is still in the US for the most part). However, on more than one occasion, I've had to send a flurry of rushed emails about my order as something got screwed up in the process, and it can take them up to 5-7 days to respond. And I'm not even the only one to complain about this, there's a lot of people who've had the same problem. Left Field NYC seems to do a better job at detailing their denim and just having good customer service in general, Christian is a saint. I'd say go for one of those two, but they're limited on fits, so keep that in mind. Brave star is affordable, but there are some design elements and shortcomings they stumble upon in the process that Left Field NYC just doesn't have, and you do pay more generally with LF, but you are getting a better pair of jeans. Mister Freedom is pretty incredible too, but we're talking almost $400 at that point vs $100-$250. One thing I like about brave star and left field is that they both utilize USPS as their main carrier, so my packages never get lost in the mail. Mister Freedom uses FedEx, and they're basically clueless when it comes to domestic delivery, I've had to have all my packages sent to a drop box to pickup at the nearby drug store because they couldn't find my address. It's all preferential at the end of the day, but I'd recommend Left Field NYC to anyone who's tried Brave Star.
Bravestar Demin Jeans are awesome. They have great stuff (Type II and Type III jackets etc.), but their customer service is beyond awful. I am from Germany, and I am (was) a customer of them for over two years. With tax, shipping cost and import duty, a pair of denim jeans for example can easily cost 170 Euros. Last time I ordered from them a pair of jeans, they send me the wrong cut/fit. At first a guy from the customer service told me, they would provide my with a free return label and I could send the jeans back to them. But I have to send them pictures of the inside label etc. Which I did. But a couple weeks later another guy from the customer service then told me I have to pay for the shipping cost myself. And they would reimbursement when they received the jeans. Which probably would have been taken a couple of weeks or even month. In my eyes that’s a pretty shitty customer service policy.
The one negative thing I've heard about them stateside is that while they offer hemming at their factory for an additional cost - 99% of the jeans arrive unhemmed and have to be sent back.
@@rubberlover666 that's hilarious !!! :D
Yeah. The policy on their website didn’t give me much hope and hearing a few comments I’m not sure that I’ll be seeing a pair any time soon. Still. So many folk swear by them.
Had a bad experience with their jeans, they didn’t want to know. Won’t be buying from them again, no matter how much I want to love them
I had a similar shitty experience. long story short, I ordered a size too small and had to send them back and wait on an exchange. It was a three month process and I live in Los Angeles, the city they're based in...
I want a second part!
Good fit, good insight.
Part 3 please lol MOMOTARO NATION FTW
Follow up 5 please!
coming soon
Final five!
Coming soon. 😊
I thought 50 mins for the 3sixteen/Armani face-off (mismatch?) would be a bit much, but every second was so enjoyable. Just a bit sad you didn't push your finger right through those ridiculous sandblasted patches on the thighs. Also very happy to see Pike Brothers take a spot on the most-mentioned list - I'm a big fan. Couple of quick questions - would you ever do a vid comparing different sweatshirts, and do you have any opinion on Soso selvage jeans? Cheers!
What do you think Japan Blue Jeans?
I love my Bravestars!
I got a free box of Velveeta when I purchased "Faded Glory" jeans
Viapiana is a dope Canadian Demin Co all handmade by 1 dude in Toronto.
Love it tell the other five
Great videos and you’re definitely getting funnier .
I try 😂. Cheers James. Happy new year!
I really really need the next five... not sure my wallet does, but I do
I don’t get the model at least in the US where you order denim online but can’t return them if you’re not satisfied. Denim fit is hard to get right and the price tag too high to get it wrong. I’ve been tempted to try Brave Star or unbranded but at +$100 I’m still undecided. It’s like being willing to burn $100.
mr. freedom is what happens when you mix wranglers Levi’s with Japanese craftsmanship - aka pure western Americana - most japanese brands do not pull from wranglers, cool to see a brand do so
I was wondering about the watch
Man, this video was way too short, be ashamed of yourself...! ;-) love your work!!
Let's do the 5 next !
I'm totally shocked to not see Naked & Famous on the list anywhere. Wow! I saw Unbranded but, not N & F.
I think it’s because they’re so ubiquitous within the denim community that people kinda of just take them for granted I guess?? They’re awesome and affordable.
Pls do the other 5
we need more permanent or reactive dyed black jeans
Love BraveStar
I have two pairs of Brave Star and have interacted with their customer service. I haven't had any problems with them. They've been polite. If anything the company is a little quirky at times. Also, when they send you a jean, if you want a hem you send them back after trying them on. I understand they probably have had experiences where someone would want to return a hemmed pair of jeans, but you end up paying about 8-10 dollars to ship them back, plus the cost of the hem. So, the jeans cost a little more than one might think from seeing the sticker price. But certainly I've liked them and have two pairs.
Samurai should be in the next 5!
Part 2 please
Unfortunately I cannot really speak well of brave star. I bought a pair of supposedly sanforised black on black jeans. The first wash they shrunk an inch in the waist and 3 inches in the leg. Also I’ve had many premature blowouts and rivets popping off. Although they’re affordable in the states, here shipped to the UK you’re looking at nearly 200 smackers when all the tax and shipping is said and done (PBJ territory). I personally cannot recommend, but I’m sure many others have had a better experience :)
I have no negative saying about Bravestar. I have ordered jeans and jackets to Finland and with no problem at all. Ofcourse there are taxes but thats not their fault but international politics. And if iron heart has beginning price over 300e, the total with braveheart is still less and awesome stuff!!
Yeah, the products seem to be top for the price you pay. I guess they could be huge if the customer service was a little better. Hearing some horror stories.
4:37 he finally gets around to the list.
I think Levis deserved to be in the list
Lost was put together from all the comments from you guys. It was mentioned but not all that often.
Yes, I’d like to see the other 5. Nice way to drive engagement. 🙂
Haha. Wasn’t my intention but now you mentioned it. 😉😊😂
Nudie has free repairs although you first need to get your jeans to a nudie store or a repair partner. They offer "free repair kits" as well but those have been out of stock for... a long time.
Sugar cane, SDA, Freewheelers Resolute and Full count...Bought last year..and I think im done for a bit...
Haha. Col. I guess so. Need some time with those
Excellent! Who is complaining your videos are too long? I don't get it. Attentions span problems in a world of Twitter? Father Guido's 10 min. University?
release part 2
Yeah. Will do for sure.
Just figure it out man. Get you a pair of brave stars ! Plz it’s worth it
Don’t give into the haters and give us the next 5 brands.
Bring back the long videos
Is this sage from Indonesian?
Trying my hardest to not buy a pair of ironhearts.
I mean. They are good jeans for sure. Just the heavy denim isn’t for me personally and the lighter, 14oz denim… I can’t really justify the high cost in comparison to other brands
@@CeeAreDee would you recommend japan blue 16.5 oz ?I'm currently wearing unbranded 14.5oz in the ub201. And honestly would like to go heavier but you have more experience as I'm sure you've owned heavier denims
@@chanceweatherford1421 guess you have to ask yourself why you want to go heavier. If it’s for the experience then I say go for it. There’s value in finding out if you like that kinda thing. Only way to know is to try. If it’s for the hype then maybe have another thing about it. The only way I know that heavy denim ain’t for me is that I tried it. Tried it and didn’t like it much.
