  • Seed starting mix versus Potting soil, let's see what happened!
In a previous video I share an experiment with you on seed starting mixes versus a plain potting mix to start some tomato seeds.

In my winter sowing video and blog post I share with you that I don't bother with dedicated seed starting mix though others feel it is necessary to be successful in starting seeds. In light of using what you have instead of going out and buying extra things I thought I would do a side by side test to see if one really is superior in performance.
I was curious myself and I found the experiment enlightening and rather fun.
    Come see what happened!

This is good information. Her's proof your homemade potting soil blend works as well as the packaged, more expensive potting soil. Nice job Pamela!

thank you, I must admit I had thought my mix would be the lagger but was pleasantly surprised when it work equally as well. Also the seedlings that needed to be separated came apart much easier with my loose mix as opposed to the Jiffy and MG mix. The Gardeners and Bloom was nice and easy to separate as well as mine.

Always wondered about difference! I use my homemade potting mix. Just found your channel and watching all your older vids too. Thanks for sharing! Love your gardens!

It was a fun experiment. One thing I liked better about my mix is it was looser and when it came time to pot up the seedlings the ones in my mix were so easy to separate. The peat based ones were a big clump and didn't want to just pull apart.

Pam I used the Jiffy Natural Organic mix the seedlings seem to germinate but then they never get any bigger with watering, lights and or heat. Never get a second set of true leaves. I am at a loss for what I am doing incorrectly. Thinking it may be the watering when you mentioned feeding your seedlings a small amount of fertilizer.

Yes, I have found that they do need a boost shortly after germinating. I gave them some liquid seaweed feed, very diluted. The mix with the Miracle Grow I did not add any more feed to. I prefer organic products but I must admit the MG Seed start mix worked very well.
