    I started keeping goats and sheep some two years ago and how I wished I had someone experienced like you to learn from. I lost about 5 goat kids and one sheep kid to tape worms. And I used to see these white things like grains of rice on their poop, but I gave them a wrong dewomer 😏

    Hi,great video yet again.when giving panacur to sheep how many doses do they get at a time is it a dose once a day for 3 days?

    • @LinessaFarms
      @LinessaFarms  2 года назад

      0.6 ml per 25lbs. The bottle may have different directions. 👍🏻

    • @LinessaFarms
      @LinessaFarms  2 года назад

      We have seen a lot of issues with resistance and have seen people have to give a single 10ml dose to get effective results. I’m not a vet so I can’t tell you to do that. Just letting you know what I’ve been seeing.

    • @LinessaFarms
      @LinessaFarms  2 года назад

      Camelids like alpaca and llama would normally get the 3-5 day dose you are referring to. With sheep and goats, it’s usually a single dose.

      @@LinessaFarms Someone said tobacco works. The nicotine does it. Have you ever tried it?

    • @LinessaFarms
      @LinessaFarms  Год назад

      @@kingdavidson7430 “works” is pretty subjective. The old timers used to feed hogs chewing tobacco because they believed it kept the animals wormed and stimulated appetite. When I was a little guy, the older farmers that had sheep with bad worms would boil down tobacco in water and also add copper sulfate. It did work, but it also killed a lot of sheep. In order to get the amount of nicotine needed to kill a tape worm infestation would more than likely require boiling it down and concentrating it but then you are getting into other issues because there is no way to test the concentration amount. So, I’m not going to tell you it won’t work, I would just say it’s dangerous, expensive, and nearly impossible to control the dose.

    • @kingdavidson7430
      @kingdavidson7430 Год назад

      @@LinessaFarmsok thanks. So copper sulfate doesn't kill tapeworms. How is that possible?

    • @LinessaFarms
      @LinessaFarms  Год назад

      @@kingdavidson7430 Anthelmintics for tapeworms are designed to specifically target and eliminate the tapeworms from the host's body. These medications, such as praziquantel or albendazole, work by interfering with the tapeworm's metabolism and causing paralysis or death of the parasite. Copper sulfate does not possess the same mechanism of action or specificity for tapeworms.

    We've been asked to look for pinkish eye lids with Barber pole worm. Are there any tell tale symptoms with a youngster with Tapeworm ? Sluggishness for instance ?

    • @LinessaFarms
      @LinessaFarms  Год назад

      Pale eyelids can be a sign of almost any parasite to include various worms, fleas, mites, lice, etc. This can be why just looking at eyelids and assuming worms can be dangerous. Fecal samples are the gold standard for determining what you’re dealing with. Lethargy, pale eyelids, diarrhea, bottle jaw, and other symptoms can all tell the tale of parasites. In the case of tape worms, it is usually more prevalent in young sheep and goats under a year of age, although not always. In severe cases, tape worm segments can be visible in the stool as well.

    Hello - sounds like the treatment is one time...but can reinfestation occur? Thanks

    • @LinessaFarms
      @LinessaFarms  Год назад

      Usually one treatment will fix things up, however we have seen some resistance on other farms to panacur/safeguard requiring higher dosages.
      There are certain vectors such as rodents and cats which can carry tape worms and reinfect your animals. Generally, tape worms are a young kid or lamb issue. Most adults will develop resistance. Thank you for the question and thank you for watching. 👍🏻

    With the valbazen, are you using the horse paste? The only wormers we have available for sheep here are ivermectin sheep drench and ivermectin injectable, everything else is formulated into the horse pastes. If that is what you are using, how are you dosing it (since dosages vary from one animal to another)?

    I add cayenne to my cat's food from time to time in worm season; surprisingly she doesn't mind. She eats a lot of rabbits/rodents and will get lethargic if I don't. Perks up within a day of treatment. Big fan of raw garlic and cayenne for stomach worms in goats from what I've seen, but I also move the kids to a separate dry lot paddock temporarily to drop the worm load away from our pasture if I notice eggs. Any idea how long it takes to break the cycle in a normal pasture environment? I shoot for 60-90 days, but I know some can persist much longer.
    Edit: Always appreciate your videos

    • @LinessaFarms
      @LinessaFarms  2 года назад

      Breaking that worm cycle can depend a lot on the pasture. The shorter the grass and the hotter/more UV rays the ground/feces gets, the less time is needed. If the ground stays moist and the grass is long and blocks UV rays, it can take longer. General rule of thumb is if you are getting up in the 90’s, they will be gone in about 35-45 days. Cold winter months where temps are below 40? They can live up to 6 months. 😐
      I placed a post on the Tack Box for you regarding this as well.

    • @lastharvest4044
      @lastharvest4044 2 года назад

      @@LinessaFarms Appreciate the details. It's been 95-100+ here for the last couple of months with only a few rains, and still developed a tape worm load in a 5 month old kid with the rotation. The pasture is taller so it probably did retain plenty of moisture. It coincided with an injured leg, and a subsequent mite problem, so that likely had a lot to do with it escalating to be noticed. She's back to her normal bouncy self thankfully. I'll check out your post, thanks again.

    What about liver flutes?

    • @LinessaFarms
      @LinessaFarms  2 года назад

      That’s a complicated question for a tape worm video. If you would like to know more about liver flukes, the best thing to do would be to ask a question on our Facebook group, Linessa Farms Tack Box. I have no problem taking the time to educate you about liver flukes but it would probably be better received on an open forum and not buried in a video about tape worms, if that makes sense. I will post about liver flukes on our forum. If you would like to see it, feel free to check it out. 👍🏻
