If I ever get to England I want to see 𝘚𝘵𝘰𝘯𝘦𝘩𝘦𝘯𝘨𝘦, Fly in or see a 𝘚𝘱𝘪𝘵𝘧𝘪𝘳𝘦 up close, and finally to visit Sheffield and 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘍𝘢𝘮𝘰𝘶𝘴 𝘚𝘩𝘦𝘧𝘧𝘪𝘦𝘭𝘥 𝘊𝘰𝘮𝘱𝘢𝘯𝘺. I have a similar T.E.W. Barlow in Buffalo with fine metalwork, an absolute beauty. 𝗖𝗵𝗲𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝗲!

You made some great choices there mate! My favourite would be the Joseph Rodgers. My MM ergonomic is no nailbreaker either but my theory is that it is like that deliberately to help make the knife more comfortable to use ,hence the name ergonomic!

I got the Ergonomic as a "custom" so mine has the file work, it's probably the star of my modest collection, !
Nothing prepares you for how it feels in the hand,, it could, (and was) made to fit my hand absolutely perfectly,, the fact that the bog oak is English, and Five Thousand years old, is mind blowing,, imho,,
I'm still on my self imposed knife hiatus, but a TEW Premier, similar to yours, is definitely on my list, once funds, (and wife) permit,, lol..
Thanks for showing us these, I'm well jealous,, ha ha..
I might just have to visit this shop,,
    Cheers. John..
ps,, ALL my knives except my Leatherman Skeletool, are packed away in a box, in preparation for moving house, so I'm experiencing severe withdrawal symptoms,
    ha ha ha..

Well, there's a lot to unpack pack here, so I'll start first and foremost by expressing my love for this company.
The Famous Sheffield Shop is among my favourite sellers, ever. They have a moderately small selection online, but seem to have a huge catalogue in-store. My biggest praise is their customer service. I've spoken with Jordan and Jane, mostly and I have nothing but good things to say in terms of customer support. I've complained about issues with knives in the past, and they've not only tolerated me, but have also gone out of their way to make everything right. Response time and clarity over Email are 10/10, as well. Overall, I've found few companies that can even come *close* in terms of friendliness and swiftness of communication! I'd love to visit some day, but in the meantime, I'll just have to stick to online shopping.
Moving to the next subject; Your glorious triumvirate of knives.
First, the Rodgers. The style is undeniably classic. I've got a couple A. Wright Spearpoints that are very similar, although I'd be curious to compare them to the Rodgers. While I prefer natural cover materials, I can appreciate the rugged simplicity of the Delrin. Overall, it's a great looking little knife!
Then to the Michael May...I have only one 'Ergonomic', but find it has a very similar action. When I first received it, the blade had an incredibly light action, not to mention, a very mushy one at that. Thankfully, oiling it a bunch has led to it snapping open and shut with moderate authority, although it's still far from a nail-breaker. (Not that I mind!) Overall, the Ergo' makes for a very trusty and *ergonomic* knife to carry. I prefer the filework over the plain back, but that doesn't take away from the knife's rustic beauty. Bog Oak, is of course one of (if not) my favourite handle material. It's got a nice, oily feel, but with a bit of texture from the Oak. Plus, the fact it's thousands of years old gives it an 'ancient' feel. Quite a nice conversation starter! And lastly, I'm surprised my comment on the "UK Legal Buck 110" caught on. Even so, I still stand by what I said!!! 😂 Thanks for the shoutout, by the way!
As for that TEW, I can confidently attest to the fact that a Buffalo Slim Barlow is a great 'first-line' of "Taylor's cocaine". I have one that I snagged from Fendrihan for around 130-140 CAD, although it didn't come with the filework...again, not that I mind. The other models from TEW are nice, but to me, the Slim Barlow/Gent's Clip is just special, as very few makers (particularly in Sheffield) will make such a style. One shudders to imagine how hard it must've been to decide on just *one,* especially when you're in the dragon's lair of Sheffield cutlery stores! Anyways, I hope you enjoy that knife, it's certainly a sexy one. (Again, my bias shines through!)
Oh, and "A Brew and a Blade" is an absolutely outstanding idea. Perhaps you could make it an open tag? (Of course only if you'd like) I can say on a personal level that two of the hardest choices I make in daily life are: A. Choosing daily carry knives. And B. Deciding between a cup of coffee or a cup of tea! First world problems, I suppose. 😅
Anyway, here ends my TedTalk. If you managed to make it 'till the end, I am extremely grateful. Although I suppose people listening to my rambles is why I have any subscribers at all!
    Cheers, as always, friend!

    • @SteelCityKnives
      @SteelCityKnives  9 месяцев назад +2

I always enjoy your comments, mate!
I'll be honest with I could have spent another couple of hours in there. Because I would have looked at some of the other items they sell also. Plus, I didn't even look over the cutlery books. I spent a lot of time on one book. An old catalogue they made into a book. A one-off, the patterns that were in there were brilliant and varied. I blame you for the slim Barlow purchase 😂. I have a couple of vintage ones. It's an old pattern that I'm glad someone is still making. Jane was brilliant, and I could have spoken to her all day. A brilliant insight. I'm more of a coffee drinker than tea. But you have to leave the country if you don't drink it here 😂. So I have the odd cuppa.
      Cheers mate 👋

@@SteelCityKnivesI'd love to see that book! No, I'd love to *buy* that book!
The Famous Sheffield Shop is still a place I'm hoping to visit, not only for the knives, but also to have a chance to meet the lovely staff!
Sorry, not sorry for the Slim Barlow purchase. I promise you'll be wearing rags in time, but at least you'll have a few dozen shiny knives by Mr. White! 🤣 (Certainly not speaking from experience)
You say you're more of a coffee drinker? Hm, we may have to revoke your "British License".
      Cheers, as always, friend! 😁

@@allancrotch2953Wonderful to hear! Steel City Cutlery is a great company, indeed. I probably mentioned them once or twice, as I've already bought from them a couple times.
A Buffalo Ettrick and Barlow are wonderful choices! I'm pretty sure Buffalo covers have become a rarity among Wrights. In fact, they might not even be in production anymore. I don't know this for certain, but they all seem to be vanishing without restock, so perhaps they're worth snagging just in case.
I've never had a Bowie, from A. Wright or otherwise, so I'd be curious to see how they compare to other brands.
      Enjoy your haul!
      Cheers! 😊

I’m really quite jealous of you, as I have spoken to Jane many times on the phone, but we’ve never met. Three lovely knives there, and though I have similar, I don’t have any exactly the same. I think I’ve seven or eight, slim Barlows, but not one in Buffalo Horn. Equally, I have a Michael May economic. I think it may have been the first knife I bought from him. He does have, shall we say, and reputation for variable quality, but I’ve never had a bad one. as he had paid most of them directly for me, he knows they’re going to be refused. Whether this changes things I can only guess, but I say it as I see it. Incidentally, I do have one knife made by James, a Kiradashi. It’s an old knife to buy from a Sheffield Baker, but it ties in well with my Japanese collection. I don’t have many of the Eggington knives, but I’ve been very pleased to have been sent the last two specials that they have produced. In my current circumstance, there is no way I could buy knives like that, so they generosity was very much appreciated. However, most of the other Eggington no that I have are more budget orientated. Thank you for showing these great knives, and I look forward to seeing more coverage of the famous Sheffield shop, and of course Jane!

      Hi Eric 👋
I spoke to someone at the Eggerton group, and they spoke very highly of James. Where he previously worked. Working with M. May I would imagine would be totally different from a company like the Eggerton group.
I watched a brilliant documentary on Portland works. It was produced by some of the people who saved it. It's on the portland works site.
I strive to be as honest in my reviews as yourself. I love M. May knives, but it has got a weak pull. For some, that wouldn't even be an issue. Maybe even an advantage. But I'm trying to say it as I see it.
I didn't film much at the shop. Took some pictures, so I'm not sure how I'm going to put a video together yet. But a brilliant place, and they humoured me very well 😂.
      Cheers Eric

I have two Ergonomics and they both have a slightly mushy feel. It's odd because they both snap shut firmly but don't really snap into the open position. One is Cherry and one is Bog Oak and the Cherry one is the weakest but i can forgive them because to me they're such lovely knives.😊
Also i feel the need to proudly boast that i own the very knife that you showed from Michael's web page, where he asks Why should you own a pocket knife?(9.02 The Elm burr hybrid). It's a beauty and actually has a decent pull to it. Not AW strong but certainly better than the Ergonomics. It also has some fantastic filework/chasing on the back spring. Sorry for bragging but none of my family or friends have any interest in my knives but i know you guys will understand.😂
