Delayed drifting (if it’s anything like MKWii) works because your mini turbo doesn’t start charging until after you land from the hop, so more of the turn is used to charge the mini turbo. As for the glider thing, I don’t know this for sure, but it’s possible it has something to do with vectoring, which is used in a number of speed runs such as Mario odyssey and the original doom games. Basically the game stores forward speed and sideways speed as separate values, and because there is a cap on these values rather than overall speed, moving diagonally allows you to move slightly faster than you otherwise would. Think of it like a square, with one edge being forward speed and one edge being sideways speed. The line from the centre to the diagonal corner is longer than the line from the centre to the middle of an edge. It’s possible that the reason this only works with gliders is because I they offer 3D movement, hence pulling backwards and left/right.
Very interesting information, I had kind of a rough guess about the delayed drifting, but I legit had no idea about why the glider strategies work. Thanks for explaining all of that!
Finally an advanced tips video that actually gives _advanced_ tips. So many just go over the bare bones basics, especially with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe since it is the most casual & mainstream Mario Kart. This has been really helpful, thanks.

Great video to become an advanced MK player! The only thing that is not correct in this video is that motion glider is also an essential skill to have to compete with top players on online racing, and it is not only for a speed run. I have seen quite a lot of players quickly switching on and off the motion sensor before and after the final corners of, for example, Mario Kart Stadium and Dolphin Shoals. When it is crowded around that corner, it is possible to move up in the final place by 3~4. But of course, this technique shouldn't be the first one to learn before mastering the others.
Great video! Here is just a quick note: You can actually use motion glider in online if you are fast enough to pause the game before and after the glider. It is pretty common among high level players to do that in wars or wws.
@@Bayesic For motion glider I know you press the stick back and to the right or left, but what about the controller angle itself? @@WhiteLightnin38 The controller’s motion sensor is more precise than you think, so that means the top of the controller should come to play as well, and generally you want to make the angle of your controller at 45 degrees to left/right. This video helped me a lot, and thank you, but I still have questions. Can you only low glider RIGHT AFTER your kart’s glider comes out, or can I low glide at any time when I’m gliding? Also are there any hints that show that I’m low gliding?
Your videos are great. My wife and I just completed the full gold buildout of MKD8, and your tutorials were a huge help. As a 50 year old trying to pull off maneuvers that are easy for the kids, it's vital to get these kinds of broken-out steps to plan my routes. Now to beat all the 200cc ghosts! :-)
The ironic thing is that learning how to break drift is one of the most important things for learning how to play 200cc, but then once you learn how to play 200cc, The most important thing is learning how to stop brake drifting while still being able to maintain the same lines
@@IncertusetNescio Nah 150 and 200cc lines are pretty different. What I mean is that like, learning how to brake drift is pretty important for learning how to play 200cc... like at all But then once you start getting a lot better at the game, you realize that even on 200cc, you *really* don't need to brake drift all that much, and on many... maybe even most courses you don't need to brake drift at all
@@Bayesic It's the 200cc lines that are kicking every square inch of my rear right now because they're so different, long, and wide vs 150cc. I'm going to have to put in the hours with it to learn them. I suspect that some of those lines are not even on the track for parts which will take a while longer to learn. For a cartoony kart racer there's a lot more there than you'd expect.
@@Bayesic in french announcer voice *one dozen races later* Ah, I totally see. The braking is important to learning the new lines and adjusting, but once you do know them, and experiment a bit, the need for braking mostly disappears except for hard turns and mistakes. Much appreciated!
Pausing as a means of a pro strategy never seems legitimate to me. It is used in several games for speed runs for different purposes. I feel the same way when glitches are exploited for speed running.
I'm totally fine with glitches and even with pausing mid run to make those glitches easier to execute, mostly cause that usually impacts your timer (the more you pause the more time you're "wasting") but pausing mid time trial just rubs me the wrong way specifically because it *doesn't* add to your time
@Bayesic super monkey ball speed runs come to mind when it comes to pausing. I think in the case of monkey ball it takes away the purpose of the game in the first place. The idea is to time the levels yourselves, not spam pause to get the right frame/timing with that method. In other speedruns that I watch pausing can be a little annoying regardless.
I was so surprised with the way you said electrodrome. I always thought it was electroDOME, so I looked it up and it turns out you were right. Imma keep saying it like electrodome tho, I think it sounds better that way after saying it for years.
I had no idea this was even a thing. I looked into this and it turns out that unlike in Mario Kart 8, acceleration ALWAYS increases your acceleration (i.e. it's not in tiers). I might actually make a video about this cause it's really interesting how this works

Thanks a lot for this video, I’m trying to do competitive Mario Kart for the first time this year in my school’s esports club, and I’ll have to be sure to give these strategies a try.
Thanks for this helpful video! A question about Delayed Drifting: So would you say that with exception of tight turns, Delayed Drifting should always be used? What do you think is the advantage for 150cc?

I only very recently found out about brake drifting, and only because I couldn't make turns in 200cc and had to figure out how. It's pretty tricky to learn to use at all for me since My brain is already nearly 100% occupied as is, and a fair bit more so to use competently, much less well. Slip drifting I learned accidentally and has served me very well. It's one of the best ways I've learned to be good at 150cc and make several of those tighter post-jump turns.
I came here because im tryibg to get gold kart i keep getting passed by 6 people after one banana and i cant fucking get a single star on star cup because nintendos cash grab of a game rigged it to where it makes me suffer a fate worse than death whenever i hit a red shell one singualr fucking time
Whoa there, cowboy. Clearly, I'm way 'zero' for this guide--I haven't even played this thing in years. It's time for me to go back to your 'how to play, video I wish I had when I started.'😅
Mkw has a lot more speed tech than mk8 which makes mkw more fun imo. The tracks in mk8 barely have any shortcuts and rely heavily on 200cc to be remotely interesting. Also in mkw you can get custom tracks for free, as well as play online without a subscription.
Thanks for the vid man! There really aren't any videos, especially non condescending, explaining these things Working on getting better at 150 cc TTs. I think I might need a tutorial on counter hopping jump alignment whatever though haha can't figure it out. Improved times thanks to your tutorials tho 👍
I mess around on the MK8 speed running discord from time to time and I’ve lost track of the number of times that somebody has come in like “I’m not sure how to figure out this strategy here” and someone goes “just watch the WR” Like if I could figure out all the stuff the world record is doing, I’d already have WR lol
So does no one know about hidden ramps…? Like on bowsers castle on the mote bridge there’s a little bump that if you use it like any other colorless ramp it gives you a boost
This content offers a wide array of profound insights. A book I read with like-minded themes reshaped my outlook. "The Art of Meaningful Relationships in the 21st Century" by Various Authors
I honestly can't believe how much Nintendo has flat out copied the great game mechanics that Naughty Dog made way way back during the original Crash Team Racing in the PS ONE era!
you dont have to know any of this to be succesful at mario kart. youll develope your own style and techniques just by playing a lot. i have top 100 times on 4 courses, and i dont remember the last time a lost a 200cc online race. id say i probably do about a third to half of these techniques. dont over think it and just play. if incorperating these makes you worse or makes you enjoy the game less dont do them. easy as that
You can perform motion glider without pausing the game if you have a controller that does not have a motion sensor, like a GameCube controller. You must have motion controls turned on. Drift off a glider section and move your right thumb to the d pad and use up and left/right with the joy stick, then move your thumb back to A when you straighten out
Finally I found a good MK8D expert trick tutorial, thank you for making it! I'll be sure to implement some of these into my online play as I head for 99k. Cant believe I didnt know what brake drifting was, I was still using smart steering for certain 200cc tracks lol. One question: if when using a UMT onto a glider pad it is faster to not trick, does this mean the same is also true when using a mushroom onto one, or is that speed the same as the midair trick speed?
That’s actually a good question, I’ve never thought about it. I would imagine that it would be faster to just mushroom off of the glider, but I can’t think of very many circumstances where you’d want to hold onto a mushroom to use it off a glider I guess long story short is that because pretty much every track in the game has short cuts it’s probably better to use your mushroom there then to use it off of a glider
@@Bayesic Thank you for the reply! I was mostly thinking chaining a mushroom on the tracks where the boxes are next to or on the glider ramp such as DK Jungle and the end of Sunshine Airport, since I do racing; cant think of anywhere it would be useful for time trials. I can try not tricking and see if I notice anything, I have been tricking out of habit but I'll try doing the jump onto the end of the ramp sometimes too from now.
So is it always best to hold down when gliding (obviously if there’s safe ground there) even if you’re a light character like shy guy? I thought you travel faster when you’re gliding.
Huh i have everything gold 3 star in 200cc yet i didnt know how to break til now after hearing about it, that definitely explains how to not fail those supper sharp turns without hitting a wall and loosing momentum
I didn’t know slide drifting was I thing I just thought it was something that wasn’t practical since I usually try and readjust by moving the joystick and I end up drifting in the wrong direction
I don't know about calling drift braking 'advanced', the game literally tells you about it in the help menu, unlike all the other things in this video.
Delayed drifting (if it’s anything like MKWii) works because your mini turbo doesn’t start charging until after you land from the hop, so more of the turn is used to charge the mini turbo.

Awesome video, straight to the point with no fluff. I’ll have to implement these soon. Thanks
Can you make in depth videos about items in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe? That would be pretty helpful.
Thank you!!! I've had a hard time finding information on counterhopping so this is a breath of fresh air~!
Why should i learn these tricks? If im losing ill just throw red and blue shells 😁
😂
Mario Kart 8 is so easy (unless you're a little kid playing for the first time) Try Rainbow Road on SNES without falling
This came into my recommendations. This was a very interesting video to watch. I appreciate the tips! :)
Thanks for the vid man! There really aren't any videos, especially non condescending, explaining these things
Working on getting better at 150 cc TTs. I think I might need a tutorial on counter hopping jump alignment whatever though haha can't figure it out. Improved times thanks to your tutorials tho 👍
I mess around on the MK8 speed running discord from time to time and I’ve lost track of the number of times that somebody has come in like “I’m not sure how to figure out this strategy here” and someone goes “just watch the WR”
Like if I could figure out all the stuff the world record is doing, I’d already have WR lol
I’m just trying to beat the world record on rainbow road (n64) on 150cc
So does no one know about hidden ramps…? Like on bowsers castle on the mote bridge there’s a little bump that if you use it like any other colorless ramp it gives you a boost
I keep getting 4th-2nd place in online matches, I’m good but someone is always much better than I am apparently
Beautiful content right here! Lots of good information and great structure!
I appreciate this video so much. Took me from 3000 to 8000 like THAT.
I started playing MK8DX recently your videos are informative and helpful thank you

See, every time i try to do this, i just fall off the stupid glider ramp.
This content offers a wide array of profound insights. A book I read with like-minded themes reshaped my outlook. "The Art of Meaningful Relationships in the 21st Century" by Various Authors
I had no idea Delayed Drifting was in MK8DX I thought it was just an MKWii thing
I would imagine that it would be faster to just mushroom off of the glider, but I can’t think of very many circumstances where you’d want to hold onto a mushroom to use it off a glider
I guess long story short is that because pretty much every track in the game has short cuts it’s probably better to use your mushroom there then to use it off of a glider
The funny thing is I'm actually a competitve mario kart wii player and I already knew about slipdrifting and delay drifting so that was easy.
*me a Wii veteran hearing slipdrift and delay drift*
I don't know about calling drift braking 'advanced', the game literally tells you about it in the help menu, unlike all the other things in this video.
I just got a switch(MK8D) and was wondering why I keep being in 8th place and how people are driving so fast.
Missed a SUPER opportunity to name your video “Go from Average Joe, to Super Mario!” - next time! 😊🎉
