I love the footage of his girlfriend knocking him down. If you want to start off more gently, go to a trampoline park. You can fall down a ton without any scrapes or bruises until you are consistently rolling out of a fall.
Be careful tho, practicing only on soft ground can lead to some bad techniques. What's helped me is to move onto hard ground inbetween practicing on soft, starting crouched down and "falling" slowly. It's hard to notice where you're hitting bone on soft grounds and wrong technique is annoying to unlearn. You'll probably get some bruises, but that's better than broken bones or concussions.
The first decent fall I took while learning I was stationary and the board slipped out from under me and I basically went horizontally landing hard on the side of my knee and elbow. Luckily I was able to ice my knee immediately which minimised the swelling and bruising. Next week I bought pads which would have saved both injuries if I had had them.
lol literally the same thing happened to me and I also bought pads after that. that is indeed a very good idea, invest in some pads and enjoy more time on your board, less time recovering from pointless injuries.
My greatest fall was when I bombed a really long walkway bridge between a mall and a metro station. It was at least or nearly a kilometer, I would say; it had moving sidewalks on either side and the middle part was empty and a marble floor that had declines, so I couldn't resist. Also, I was really late for work (rode the wrong bus and fell asleep). Of course, I didn't yet know how to properly break or slide or anything that could reduce speed, and foot breaking was out of the question since it was marble. But my god, the speed felt amazing, it felt like an eternity. I thought I was gonna get away with it as I could already see the end of it, but then I suddenly realized that at that speed I didn't have any other way of getting out of it but jumping out. Of course, this was also the time that I started getting speed wobble, so I just succumbed to it and let momentum and gravity take me. I crashed into some tourists. I bet it was the highlight of their day.

@@andrewregrets The guy who originally inspired me to skate spent an afternoon in the local car park getting his ollies higher. Every 5 minutes he's get something wrong and writhe on the floor in agony: then he'd get up and have another go. From this I took home the lessons that that falls are inevitable and that I thought he was cool for getting up and having another go. But if I can fall in a painless way, I'd rather do it, and then the tricks aren't so scary to try. Actually, when I fall off, catch my fall just right, and come to a controlled stop without feeling any impact anywhere, it can feel like quite an achievement in itself. It probably is worth practising! originally
1 thing that taught me how to fall well was doing some basic parkour in highschool being able to take a 10 foot drop believe it or not makes falling of a skateboard a breeze especially when im getting speedwobble on a hill or traffic comes outta nowhere instead of trying to stop and hurting myself alot i just jump off take the roll and hope my board makes it out okay i have lost a board this way but it was better than slamming into the truck that pulled out of a hidden drive way lol

Local skater from queens. I swear at the park. When’s the vibes are high, the best skaters aren’t even the ones doing the coolest tricks. They’re the ones who take the hardest slams and keep skating afterwards and finishing what they started. #queens ❤
Learning how to fall in judo, a Japanese martial art, has been extremely useful. Since you are thrown onto tatami mats, you can avoid injuries. In Japanese middle schools, almost all male students learn judo.
Fantastic advice thanks - practice falling first and skate within ones ability (or at least, a tiny bit beyond it obv to learn something new). Thanks!!
Another tip imo is to play pickup balled sports like soccer and basketball. Learning basics moves, drills, driblling and shooting in those sports really improve your on-ground balance that will make most of this stuff second nature subconsciously in those split seconds before hitting the ground
Great video! This stuff crosses over to every day life so much too. I think researchers need to do a long-term study on the rate of falling injuries in older adults, grouped into people who skate or used to skate vs people who never skated. I'd bet the falling skills will help even into old age. Furthermore this kind of data could be used to support teaching this as part of physical education in schools. It would save so much healthcare cost over a longer time period if everyone had the right instincts when losing their balance
You could make the same argument about any physical sport really, not just skating. Sports in general give people a much greater sense of how to use their body in a variety of situations. It's a shame that so much of sports turns into a competitive thing that ultimately turns people away from it. Even just participating in sport as a hobby has so many great long-term benefits.
I see a lot of comments about being scared & i genuinely think if fear is at the forefront of your mind, this may not be for you. Theres been plenty of times when I’ve gone down from a rock on the sidewalk just riding my board so if that’s something that’s gonna be hard to overcome I think it’d be better for one’s safety to appreciate skating but not engage with it. These tips are immensely helpful but there is no 100% guarantee with sports like this, ride safe yall!
Taking a 15 year break because of a traumatic brain injury; has me embracing the fact that I may not ever ride with the same confidence I once had. I now respect how frail the flesh I live in can be
the reason i quit skateboarding after a little while is because i managed to get 4 mild to serious injuries within a few months, and that is WITH a few weeks recovery to heal. I don't know why but i am a magnet when it comes to hurting myself. A tiny pebble on the road will cause me to have to go to the hospital, i wish that was a joke but it actually happened multiple times. I just don't think it's for me.
The one time I did not have knee pads because it was to tight (got the wrong size) ate it 2 weeks ago brushes and scraps just now going away lol thankfully had hand pads on
Great video and sage trips to live and skate by. Dude, I broke my ankle trying to drop in bowl (went outside my ability) in that skatepark!! Pflugerville, right?
Yessir, Northeast Metro in Pflugerville. A few years ago, I tried to drop in on that vert ramp and took a slam straight to the hip (not one of my brightest moments). You have to be careful there!
My worst fall as a beginner involved going down a hill and having my back foot behind the rear truck. I ended up with the board shooting out in front and falling backwards i.e. in the opposite direction to my direction of travel. But then the forward momentum caused me to roll in the opposite direction of rotation and so I effectively had a second landing on my front or side. Several grazes and bruises, and a nearby dog thought I was really stupid. Not really sure how I could have handled that better once it happened and I suppose it could be argued that the lack of any more serious injury means I didn't fall too badly after all. Obviously you can probably learn to balance on the tail and get the front of the board back down rather than just fall, but once the fall is inevitable, I wonder what the best method would be. Any ideas?

Most times when I slam everything happens extremely quickly and totally unexpected. This makes me believe that there's something you have to do *before* failling. Perhaps mentally preparing yourself for falling? Doing a trick in a way where you're preparing for failing in a controlled way? Bending your knees "more than necessary"? An example. I rolled my ankle badly last autumn while trying to learn Rock'n'Rolls. I was filming the session in slow mo so I could study what was going on, but don't know what I should have done to prevent this. I did have a "bad day" that day, so maybe my problem was that I tried to "push through it" even though this was a bad day for that trick? The injury happens at 5 min 36 sec in this video: ruclips.net/video/xeAs0ZtshpE/видео.htmlsi=7vVOBSylNXWitq8v&t=336
One time I fell and I rolled like 4 times to prevent myself from getting hurt. (not on purpose I guess it's like a reflex) ngl it worked I only had a few scratches on my arms and legs.
Lets help some grannies on the street to learn falling by casually pushing them on the sidewalk. They usually lack the mobility. Make sure to push them really hard, so they roll properlly each time.
3:38 is quite a bad advice, try to prefer to roll until there's really low speed. The thing is that when you learn to "walk" away a fall on medium speed, your brain will use the same approach for high speed. This approach is not scalable to good speeds and heights. And your brain will not try to figure out if it'll use roll or try to make quick steps in a millisecond - it'll use the method it uses most often. That's how people get rolled anckles and destroyed knees - just add a little bit more energy than your lower joimts can handle. Roll is alway safe, especially in protective gear.
I insist my son wears his helmet and pads. He challenged me to get back on a skateboard, for the first time in nearly 20years. Lo and behold, I overstretched myself, forgetting to factor in how rusty I've gotten. I showed him how vital a helmet is and the advantage pads give. Without the helmet, I would have ended up with a fractured skull. The elbow pads saved me some very painful knocks. Honestly, just wear the pads. It's not lame.

It's gonna hurt. Nobody is saying it won't. But if you're willing to participate in an activity that has a risk of injury, you should learn how to be the safest you can possibly be, regardless of gender.
How do I avoid falling on my hands I know I should make a fist but I can’t for the life of me, how do I re wire my muscle memory any tips? I hate myself for not being able to fall right after skating for 6 years
Why would you want to make a fist? It might hurt, but landing on an open palm is ultimately way better than landing on bare knuckles. There's more surface space and less change of sliding. As was stated in this video itself, you shouldn't really be trying to land on your hands at all though. You've got to try to curl into a fetal position and aim for ending up on your back. I don't know if you're familiar with something like Rocket League at all, but imagine what you'd have to do to get a car in Rocket League to end up on its back when you're flying through the air. It doesn't come naturally to everyone, which is why you need to practice it repeatedly for ultimate safety.
