That's so sad and brilliant at the same time. GENE sings it like it's his song, his voice draws in the listener. It doesn't get any better, typically GENE. Thanks so much for posting this wonderful song. I love it a lot.

A song of anguish written by John Lennon and sung with all the soul of the original by Gene.
    So powerful.

@@ST-xg3gy There is a video of Gene performing a song (not this one).at this show on another YT channel. He looked awful. Perhaps that what she is referring to.

I have seen footage of I Shall be Released, years ago online, but haven't been able to find it anymore. Its as if he knew...

Holy Christ, or Dionysus, what sublimity. Gene makes all his. Genius incorrigible.
His last show was one of his best. H and booze only fueled the fire, didn't diminish it, my God. Thanks for putting this up, the whole show should come out----the greatest claim for Sherman Oaks is that Clark died there.

Don't know if this was the Cinegrill but I went to two nights, the third being understandably cancelled, and Gene was not good. I had seen him as a solo or with a Gene band a good dozen times at least and the Cinegrill was a mess. The band were not hot, Gene was in bad shape, it was not a pretty sight. It was, in fact, heartbreaking. So your last sentence above leaves me gobsmacked.

According to John Einarson's biography, the Cinegrill was a five-night stand with April 13th the last. In my research, the first couple of shows were quite bad as you say. However, things began to jell as the week progressed. On the 13th, he came out and the first 5 songs were Gene at his absolute best, the band was cookin', it was the very best that he could do in that shape. After those initial songs, he tuckered out and the rest of the night was a bit haphazard, although the band was good. I've posted two other songs that opened that night, "Your Fire Burning" and "She Darked the Sun." Go check 'em out. In my opinion, "Your Fire Burning" is absolutely transcendent and stands as my favorite Gene live performance ever. It's incredibly emotional. However, your mileage may vary...
