to the comments or should i say negative comments about the scooters being for little girls in short skirts. well guess what, i have seen scooters in southeast Asia and India as well other places. these scooters work hard and i mean very hard. so they are not rubbish .
they have been used for towing as well has carrying a full family. scooters are also used as taxis in south america.
these machines are rebuilt again and again, so they have a long life of hard graft.

You are so right. Reliable machines with low maintenance. In old days, real man projected real machines. Nowadays we have garbage. Pieces of bullsh$$ dont last more than 10 years with many european standards to fill the pocket of some companies.

Any negative comments about scooters can only be by people who dont realise what scooters are designed to do. They are not fast, yet you can make them extremely fast if you want. They are perfect for city riding, they are practical, reliable and work horses. If you compare them to a bike its like comparing cars to trucks. Different purpose completely. Maybe the bikers feel threatened. You dont hear many scooterists complaining about bikes, ridden by power ranger look alikes do you?

That is still why scooters were designed. The 2 stroke engine is inherently less efficient than the 4 stroke although it does produce more BHP per cc. They are also considerably dirtier. The scooters of the 60s were well engineered on the whole but the small wheel diameter had a small contact patch. Working on the oily bits I frequently found overtuned scooters suffered from piston ring damage and scored barrels. The weight distribution tended to be too light at the front and too heavy at the back. I now ride a modern Triumph that completely outclasses any scooter in all

Most vehicles can outclass a scooter.
That's not what the passion for scooters is about....

      Andy,
The scene has to move with the times.
I'm like you, been in the scene since 1985, my first rally was DISC 85, we have seen many changes since then.
Things never stay the same, everything moves on.
All my mates I grew up with never joined the scene, they were RD and TZR riders, these boys never understood the feeling I got from riding my scoots. The point I'm trying to make here is that we ride what we choose to ride because we like our choice of machines.
We don't choose what we ride to please others.
Your attitude reminds me of my RD riding mates.
Stay with the scene pal, ride what you want to ride but don't stick your nose up in the air because someone chooses to ride a GTS300, embrace change pal,
Also remember the scooter scene started in the 50s with LDs, where are they now?
Please don't regard this as an attack on you, I just want to make a point.

Scooters should never be confused with motorcycles, they are slow and unstable.

The Italian scooter of the 1960s and 70s, although dirty (petroil mixture 2 stroke) and with handling like a pig on roller skates, dire cornering and unenen weight distribution was perfectly suited for its original purpose. The scooter was designed to be ridden wearing a short skirt and stiletto heels around town and at the same time light enough to be lifted onto the stand by a girl. Scooters were adopted in the UK by not very bright posers who proceeded to cover them in lights (far more than the feeble generators could power) and mirrors. At night all the glassware could focus headlights behind on the riders and dazzle them. On the lighter side, these idiots would frequently come crawling round to our garage and ask us to 'fix' their scooters for them for no charge of course. The problem with these mechanically simple and reliable machines was usually a buildup of oily crud in the expansion box and the cure was to give them a damned good thrashing. The best bit was the last when he came to collect. Keep the punter lalking while a mate bump starts the scooter in reverse. Mods would invariably try to impress us by doing a flashy takeoff and go sailing over the handlebars. With the scooter on the ground, switch off, pick up the scooter. kick start it and ride around on it saying 'How did you do that?'
    They never worked it out.

GEOFF COLE. Lard Ed I presume? 😅 and yes, you’re right plenty of ‘chicks’ wearing stilettos and mini skirts on the back of my 180 SS. I’d no real interest in the scooter, it was merely a babe magnet. Worked too. The greasers could only stare in jealous wonder! Happy days

No, the best bit geoff is when you re on a highly tuned scoot and some prick on a bike thinks its the 1960s and classis scooters still do 50mph tops. Oh how time and engineering has changed. You keep wearing your leather chaps and dreaming of being a son of anarchy
