It was stated somewhere by the author that when L gives percentages, he is purposely low balling and that he actually believes it is much higher.
The author has also said that L lied quite often in the story.
He was so try-hard about it that he even lied in his internal monologue.
To be fair I do the same thing in my day to day life, it keeps me from being too disappointed.
Honestly the author has made so many claims about what was actually meant and such that I have a hard time believing anything he says anymore..
In novel it was stated that anything above 5% would be around 90% or so
L is 95% sure its Light
The 5% is how likely his reasoning would be accepted in a court of law.
Yes, all hints point at Light and only Light, I always wondered why nobody else in the team saw it.
I dunno, without knowing the limits and scope of Kira's ability, even if all the evidence is pointing in Light's general direction it is probably still more reasonable to think it is all a coincidence. They are dealing with supernatural powers here they could do anything really.
like, they "know" that Kira needs a name and a face and has at least limited control over the timing and actions of the victim and has information on the investigation. There are hints that point to a student and hints that Raye might have been involved but considering the things they know that could be coincidence or even intentional misdirection from Kira.
The entire case against Light is essentially just speculation until they actually get hands on the notebook. L is more willing than the "normal" detectives to go down the speculation rabbit hole but it's reasonable that the other wouldn't be
@@Vael221 First we had Light killing Lind L Taylor which showed that he is in Kanto, then he changed pattern based on internal police informations which showed he has access to police informations, which reduced the amount of suspects to the police and their familys.
Then he starts experimenting with criminals, which means something changed.
With the death of the FBI agents two things became clear, he noticed the FBI and really must be part of the police or their familys.
To kill them he must have made contact to at least one of them (Lucky for him Ray was not smart enough to report it, since that would have made it crystal clear to everyone).
He must have used the experiments to test his powers to know how to create a situation, where he could make contact, so he must be one of the people that got investigated in the timeframe when he started the experiments.
Out of all the FBI agents Ray was the most suspicious one right before his death. Which means Kira must have meet him. Which only left two familys, with if I remember right 7 or 8 people, of which only one fits the psychological profile.
It was clear at that point, that it must be Light, the problem was hard proof for it, like maybe a report of Ray that he made contact with Light.
Ray had multiple ways to lay out who Kira must have been, even without realizing it himself, with reporting the contact and after he recieved the mail after writing down his bosses name, he could have suspected that writing down the name does something and that Kira does not seem to know the FBI agents, cause why would he need their names, if he already knew, so Ray could have used Fake Names to write down, which would have left him and his boss as the only dead people, combinated with the control experiments and the report of his contact with light, that would have been proof that Light is Kira or involved.
With the police accepting that Light is Kira or involved, they would have investigated different to find out how he kills. And could have collected more evidence pointing at Light.
I've always wondered why they didn't tap into his pc to log his online activities, would be pretty evident, if most of the people he researches die and that he uses most of his non learning free time to research criminals, that later die due to Kira.
Not sure if they even need to proof how he kills, since they have evidence that the killing is mythical/magical and would have stopped a few weeks after the arrest of Light, with only long time known criminals dieing after the arrest and zero newly reported criminals.
The chance of it all being an coincidence, is nearly 0, there are to many things happening that point to light to brush it of as coincidence.

Remember that this is a show. Light's thinking is taking longer so the viewers can understand what is going on inside his head. He is not sitting there for 45 seconds thinking before ansewring XD

I mean it’s never revealed directly in canon so it’s technically never a spoiler, but whenever L says a percentage he’s actually more than 90% sure, regardless of the number he throws out. The creators confirmed he’s a massive liar haha
His inner monologue states something different though, also I've read, that this 90 percent thing doesn't have any evidence to be truly meant by the author, much information comes from data books which are almost never made by the authors themselves, only influenced. People also like to rephrase and reword quotes of authors to make certain fan theories "true".

it's my head canon that he's saying "that's how much evidence I have" rather than how likely he is to be Kira.

It actually is stated in the Manga. There's a lot of emphasis put on the idea that L is liar.
Something I don't think gets enough attention is how ACTUALLY certain a 5% chance is when we're talking about 7 billion potential suspects. One of them carrying 5% of the total suspicion is basically him saying "it's this guy for sure." while trying to remain marginally accurate.

Because Light and L think fast, the internal monologue scenes are essentially in slightly slow motion. They aren't actually spending 10-30 seconds thinking before responding, it's probably closer to 3-5 seconds.
But in the previous episode Ryuk searched for the cameras and found them all and explained to Light in detail where they are. Why is it unrealistic for Light to know where they are?

@@storieswithstyle Light's body covers the opening of the bag. The camera should be on his lap to see inside it. They're not 1080p cameras that can distinguish the slightest light variation, especially on a desk directly illuminated while in an otherwise dark room.
It's shown in the same episode the best angle L was able to get, and he's seeing nothing.
16:07 to answer your question(?): besides the fiancé, no one knows that raye showed his ID to someone during the bus jacking, so they have no idea how he found out his name, just that he did and killed him.

No, she was not his girlfriend, just a friend from school that he invited to a date
(No spoilers) About the girl he went on the date with - her name is Yuri and he did not kill her. In fact, it's not shown on screen, but he keeps dating her even into college. Most likely, he was easily able to manipulate her through their continued relationship and was unconcerned with her being a liability. At some point they stop dating, but it's unclear exactly when, and we can reasonably assume that they had a pretty normal separation and she just moved on with her life.
I see why you're upset with the 5% estimation.. But I can also see why L is lowering the percentage. The biggest lead he has is the live broadcast he did the first time when he narrowed down Kira's location to the city where Light lives, but he can't completely rely on that.. In other circumstances, Kira could've left the city or even the country and carried on his operation from somewhere else. That's why, for such a case where everyone around the world is a possible suspect and even supernatural creatures are, 5% is a pretty high percentage.. In our world, the percentage would've jumped from 1 in 8 billion to 5 in 100

Mate I just subbed after getting hooked on your reactions and personality (you replied a few hours ago) but just wanna say that I'm very different from you- I know nothing about science and i'm a professional musician, but I know a lot about how humans act, so it's amazing to see your deductions in real-time and how much they lined up with mine on my first viewing. I would love for you to react to an anime with more music, but you have already commented on the soundtrack of Death Note eg. Church bells/gospel music with light, representing his character. L’s music is also very calm and balanced. The music in this show does wonders for the characters

I agree with you that Light is basically a psychopath.
But I think the manga is also trying to explore the issue of how a power as powerful as the Death Note can corrupt a man.
Once tempted by this “godlike” power, which allows you to put a lot of distance between yourself and the act of killing, I think you can lose all sense of reality and awareness about the murders themselves.

Also it is "easier" to kill someone like that because of the distance. Light doesn't need to do it directly with his hands or a gun or so.
I also thought it was kind of a shame not to explore Light's character more at the beginning, when he still had struggles to use the Note.
That would have been better to see his change.

when he gets his memories back and when he kinda likes L as a friend but also want s him dead as Kira. His eyes are telling when L dies, that for a split second, he was sad.

Spoiler warning just in case
His well-being was on the line at that moment, and even if we strip his character to TV depictions of psychopathy, being completely without conscinousness and no regard for anyone, there is still a single person he will care about - himself. Remember, people can react very differently when they are confronted with a threat. But when you have power, you show your true colors. As he did when he got the Death Note. And as he did later as well, he got into position of power, and kept working his ego up. He was the same, even though the means changed, he still was doing the same thing. And if the opportunity presented again, he would do the same exact thing all over again.
Granted, he is more complex than that, of course, a psychopath is not someone who just chooses extreme means and violence, a lot of psychopaths are firefighters, surgeons and they work in other highly stressful but highly socially beneficial fields. It's not only psychopathy that makes Light behave like Light. As he progresses, he becomes more surgical, planned and confident. He develops a god complex. He also gets increasingly used to the killing, as mentioned in the comment, it's also a fact that he doesn't really get his hands dirty, he just writes, it's not personal. He stops seeing people as people when they stand in his way, they become obstacles, even if they were saints. Because in his mind, ends justify the means. He believes that the world that he wants to create will be better than the current one. But he also wants to be the god of that world. He also amasses a following that further boosts his ego and conviction. A cult that adores you forms because of your actions? Yeah, that would give anyone an ego boost. If you suddenly strip all that, he is on square zero. But he starts building again, with what he is given. L has influence and power, and he quickly tries to close the gap and catch up to him, and he did that pretty well. He still wants to get to a place of power.

6:10 at the end of the day, him Killing those 2 minor criminals is AN INCREDIBLE alibi....he couldn't have known them, and L himself is the witness to that. It's done. By all "legal" means, he is clear.
The only eye raising suspicious thing here is the severity...why did Kira kill those minor criminals? Was it because Kira couldn't be picky and Had to kill them (to obsolve himself) ? Or is it that Kira is now killing minor criminals too? Light chose the latter. That was a good move.
Earlier you said he gave too much evidence that he IS kira...no no no . He was clean. Scary clean. No evidence to suspect him. That's the only reason L is suspicious now "the Yagami household is too innocent"

The thing with L and Light. They enjoy the game, the challenge. So they move for pride and the will to win. More than justice
IQ tests also have other problems. For instance, people from different cultures generally score lower than they should in another culture's test, either due to language barriers or other factors. This has allowed bad actors to use IQ tests as proof of some kind of racial superiority, when in reality it's a limitation in the tests themselves. To make matters worse, this was used in the past as justification to forcibly sterilize people who were deemed to have "low IQ" in places like the US, which is really sick. In some parts of the US this was still considered appropriate until _1977,_ which boggles my mind.
It would be infinitely less suspicious if Light just said “bullshit” and refused to believe L. Only Kira would expect L to come knocking on his door.

I don't understand why you think the previous episode showed L that Light is Kira. Granted Light was smug and all, but as far as L knows 2 criminals that Light didn't know about died while Light was doing homework.
Also, as for Light's "girlfriend", she was simply someone he went on a date with once, there was no indication that they were dating regularly. No one has a reason to question her about that date (especially since he hasn't dated her since), so why would it come back and hurt Light?

You gotta keep in mind, that wenn L says something has a chance of 5% that he is weighing that against every single other possibility: If he says there's a 5% possibility that Light is Kira, that means he gives the (in 2006) 6.6 billion other humans as well as the possibility of higher godlike beings only a combined 95% chance, making Light's chance extremely high by comparison with the average human.
L’s announcement to light is the greatest gigachad move in all of anime.
Ok now that you know L is absolutely loaded, I don’t think it’s inappropriate to say that L is basically Batman without fighting crime physically: the worlds greatest detective and very VERY rich
When comparing Lights and Ls intelligence, please consider that L is not only older and way more experienced in tricking the people and getting information, but that Light displays a wider range of skills.
Till now we know that L knows multiple languages since he operates internationaly, has brilliant deductive skills and human reading skills and that he is the best in solving cases.
Light has shown to have incredible deductive skills, knows at least english next to japanese, knows enough technical topics to create a device that burns the Death Note if necessary, knows to sew as he demonstrated in altering his clothes to hide pages of the Death Note, solved two cases for the police and knows how to present himself and act socially to be popular among people, girls in particular as the one date was happy to have him all for herself.
I think L is better since he concentrates all his effort into solving cases, while Watari handles all the other tasks. I also think L has a form of autism, since he has a certain way to move and sit and is hyper fixated in solving cases. Prior to meeting him, we also see that he only has his Pc and Microphone, not even a table in his dark room, meaning he ignores all other things other people would take as a minimum requirement to work.
Light on the other hand seems way more versatille in his abilities and also socialy adapted.
With this in mind it isn't far of that Light is smarter, but lacks not only experience, but also juggles his social and academic live to seeming perfection!

When L says 5% I think he's means out of the billions of people on the Earth, meaning the average person has less than 0.0000000125% chance of being Kira but light has a whole 5% making him 400 million times more likely to be Kira the avrage person so he's suspect number 1 by far

I mean, is L talking about his own suspicions or about a probability equation he's running simultaneously to quantify the veracity of his opinions? Like, L is clearly devoting a lot more attention to Light than anybody else. Reminding himself of a low percent probability could be a way he keeps himself in check. "I believe Light is Kira, but I won't get tunnel vision with this assumption."

The test wasn't an IQ test or anything. Light and L both got perfect scores on each section of the test. In terms of knowledge, they are equals. Also, don't take the fact that several seconds passed with Light thinking as accurate. In universe, he probably only took a second or two to react.
L is such a troll. Don't take his words too seriously.
I think in the confusing part near the start, he means that minor criminals tend to be killed when he isn't watching broadcasts. The people he killed every hour were lesser criminals because they were published rather than being important enough for TV. And since Kira usually kills people with more serious crimes when they're on TV, L can hypothesize that Kira may have been unable to hear the broadcast since he went for targets he would normally skip.
Seeing Light seethe and lose his cool for the first time over L is always the funniest part to me.
About the girl on the date.
She wouldn't go to the police herself, because; she has no clue kira is light, and she doesn't know that raye died after. And she saw the police taking care of the matter after the incident.
And L wouldn't track her down because; he doesn't know she was with light, and he doesn't know anyone's names on that incident besides raye and the criminal. And even if she did talk about it with her friends, I don't think she is his classmate, so finding her is searching for a needle in a haystack.

I think you’re forgetting that they have no idea of the method to point to light directly. It’s one thing to suspect him, but not knowing the how is crucial.
Also you bring up why Light’s date hasn’t been questioned. The police and task force don’t know who were on the bus. If they knew then there would be no point in talking to her because they would know Light was on the bus.

As other commentors stated, the author mentions that L's percentage scoring is different from what he says in the literal sense
like I said, he was basically caught by episode 2 they are just now proving or getting proof that it's him
5% for 1 individual is actually super high considering everyone else in the world shares the remaining 95%, whatever L truly thinks aside.
so, this doesn't really come up any time beyond what's already been said, Shinigami essentially haunt the Death Note owner. But they can move around freely. Their obligation is to watch the owner until it's time for them to die. As long as they stay within the spirit of their obligations, they can do what they want.

Multiple choice tests are nice, cause they are more easy than free text, since a. it's easier to remember if you see the right answer b. you can go by elimination c. if you have no idea there is a good chance to score with a wild guess.
Remember, is not that L doesn't know, it's what L can prove
26:05: "He knows, he knows". That would be rather contradictory, as L operates on percentages, to keep exploring possibilities, instead of settling on conclusions. As you described in your problem solving methodology. L will be building up a psychological profile of Light and try to trap him. Even if he had such a strong intuition that he feels Light is Kira, it's not like he could do something legally to catch Light at the moment.
Also Light is shown to suffer from killing in the first episode of the anime, so we can't classify him as a psychopath. He's just brainwashing himself that he's killing for justice, just like a soldier making an irredeemable enemy of the opposing side, to remove themselves from the fact they are killing fellow human beings.

2: If Light is directly in front of the bag opening, and tv and paper are inside it, the camera should be on Light's lap to see inside.
I am really lost how anyone can figure out light was the culprit with the information revealed in the previous episode...
Main point: jita ends two prople as he is observed, but the pattern changes. I would assume he could not kill other people for some reason but had to. Only explanaiton: he wanted an alibi and did not pick. That is a huge sign in my mind.

Also, L now has to fill in not just how light got a hold of the face and name of his victim, but also how he figured out he was being watched.
This is all after kira has shown to L that kira can use killing as a means of experimentation or kill people who have not been convicted of any crime in the court of law due to lack of evidence. So, why can't this be just an experiment this hypothetical kira is working on or the victim had committed more serious crime that the cops/judges don't know about?

The big L reveal is still one of the best scenes in the anime; such an excellent scene!
The issue L has is that he needs to find actual proof, or catch Light red-handed so there's not a sliver of doubt that he's the one. L suspects a motive, and has some idea of how it is performed, but doesn't have a solid method, which given that it is via supernatural means he's at a huge disadvantage. At this point it might as well be looking at the picture of the person and repeating their name three times.
15:30 Oh, but that wasn't his girlfriend, she was only a girl he knew and that he used to get the information he deserves about Raye Penbar's name. We don't see her anymore because he didn't contact her anymore, I think. If he had killed her, the show will have shown that to us.

·so, inner monologues are like bullet time; thinking is essentially a free action, and even if the inner dialogue is five minutes long, assume it's less than 2 seconds
·L usually lies about his percents...i think they are inverted. if he says 5%, think 95%, for example

In general those inner though are way faster if you are in the anime, for us spectators they "slow it down" but in general in anime those inner though are way quicker from other characters perspectives

Weirdly, Arcane was a show I was thinking you’d get some great discussions and thoughts out of, while watching some of the 40K reactions.
Dystopian-esque settings definitely provide some solid ground for interesting discussions and debates.
Settings like Warhammer 40k, Cyberpunk, or Arcane (league of legends) are so completely different, but I think they all bring up some incredibly great conversations.
