"Our meadows have more life; our life more loves" is a poem written in 1843 by Gonçalves Dias. He was in Europe at the time and he wrote the poem, called Canção do Exílio (something like Song of Exile), to express how he was missing Brasil. He says: "Our sky has more stars; Our meadows have more flowers; Our woods have more life; Our life more loves."

If you excuse me, I'd suggest a modification of the translation title to "Song From The Exile" rather than "Song of Exile". I know nothing of the context, but from a superficial perspective, it seems that he was being somewhat nostalgic about his homeland. I could be wrong tho... sorry if i am! Abraços!

It is weird that when translated you lose a lot from the artistic side, considering that the anthem was write as a parnassian poem, so it is very difficult to understand the meaning, because it considers more "important" the aesthetic. The translation give you only the meaning but not the sintatics inversions, etc.

All the best of luck to you if you want to translate that poem in a way that keeps both the structure and the meaning. Poems when translated usually keep only one of those. Some translators opt for the structure, others for the meaning. Whatever choice you make, you are writing a new poem, not transporting the same poem into a new language.
That is why poems can only be appreciated in their original language. Good poems take the function of language to the limit. It's like a sculpture of words. You cannot move a piece or it crumbles.

Also, languages change: when I learned it was "I wish I were a lion." I thought it was stupid and made no sense. Years later the wrong way "I wish I was a lion." is now correct and accepted.

Bit late, but one of the reasons why Brazil's anthem is more "peaceful" than other Latin American countries is because our independence was not violent, there was no war like in other countries.
The Portuguese royal family fled from Europe to Brazil, and they were the main characters in the country's independence. Instead of a battle, there was a declaration of independence by the margins of the Ipiranga river (mentioned at the start of the anthem), in which Dom Pedro basically said "btw, this is a country now"
Also, if you want to watch one of the most touching displays of the Anthem, search for the crowd singing it at the Confederations' Cup in 2013. They usually cut the anthem short to half or a quarter of its duration, but due to political turmoil at the time, this didn't stop the people

I wonder how much this anthem reflects on the personality of Brazilians. How many times do we hear this hymn at school, or sports competitions. And although there is the valid criticism of being a very far-fetched lyric, it is sometimes difficult to understand. I believe that the Anthem has a positive influence, showing peace as a goal, nature as a greatness and the use of force only as a resource to defend oneself. It's an anthem that has always inspired me with courage, and depending on the context, I even got emotional listening to it.
Thank you Drago, for making me reflect, and yes, being better than Argentina is kind of our sport.

It talks about nature and size because Brazil is a continental size country with over 60% of the Amazon rainforest, the largest costal line in the planet, the most bio diverse country in the world and the country with most drinkable water too. And much more... so make sense it talks so much about the beauty of nature and the ocean.
And it doesn't talk a lot about war because we didn't have many wars, and the few we did we won all but one. And outside our help in the WW2, the wars we have been part of were small for our size, the mostly happen in the south only so it didn't have much effect in the cultural of the rest of the country. And since we were so big and with so much sweet water and nature there was never problem with ration of food or water, so wars although there was a lot of deaths like any other country, it wasn't a big thing in our history and culture. That might be the reason why the cultural norm in Brazil is to be chill, happy and friendly. The biggest struggles we had in our history were manly government corruption and economical/education inequality after the end of slavery because the government didn't help the people that became free.

In fact, i believe latin languages are more “poetic” (although i shall mention shakespear, an other few exceptions)!
In portuguese you can tell a very vivid strong sentimental story without repeating a word, and every synonym of the world itself express a _slightly_ different meaning!

You said our anthem doen't have much violence, its because its out second one. We now call our old ome "Emperial anthem" bacise its from when we declared independende and became an empire.
    Its bloody

I have to say, brazilian hymn has erudite and difficult language and poetry. Not very easy to understand, even to people here. Congratulations to whoever did the translation. A really fine job.

When I was in high school every 15 days at Thursdays we had to sing the Anthem. I love Brazil’s Anthem and every time I have to sing it it gives me goosebumps ❤️ I miss my country so much

On the last part (the "don't piss us off" part), a better translation would be, if you allow me:
"But if you raise, of justice, the strong club
You shall see that your sons do not cower from fight
Or fear those who conjure upon you death itself"
...well, but, as you said, "we are love, love, love, but don't piss us off" also works. 🤣

As a brazilian, I must "say" two things. (1) Our anthem will NEVER be the same for me, after Bolsonaro's The Clown government. (2) You have to be an extremely accomplished portuguese speaker and reader to FULLY understand our anthem. It's written in a VERY old-fashionable way, almost every line is in "reverse order", with words we do not use since we were a Portugal's colony. Poetry does not translate, no matter what, no matter the language. I used to ADORE our anthem - I was a girl Scout, we have that in Brazil - but this trainwreck of a President ruined my joy of being a brazilian. With that said: FORA BOLSONARO.

Now we can take our anthem back! WTF...pq estou falando em inglês? Kkkkk
