  • Here I go into detail on a few of the most common toe injuries seen on the mat. The dreaded 'mat tape' injury and the more common toe joint sprain. Tape em up and go train!

    Thanks for the video. When I first got into BJJ, I broke a pinky toe on my second day. Just started again after a year, today was my second day back, and I sprained my big toe 🙃

      I just broke my pinky toe after my fourth class. I'm kinda worried. Did it took a year for your pinky toes to heal?

      Yeah. toe injuries aren't that common. I'd slow down a bit and if a digit is painful, tape it to a buddy finger to keep loads manageable

    In my last BJJ class, I think I either sprained or broke my big toe. I thought I just jammed it or something because it didn’t hurt too bad once I was home from practice, so I took my sock off and tried to pop it by pulling it outward, which didn’t help.... the next day I noticed it was bruised pretty bad and couldn’t really move it without help from my other toes! The only reason I think I broke it tho is because sometimes when I’m trying to sleep, I’ll accidentally move my feet around to reposition the sheets and will bend it down and cause some decent pain... it’s been about 4 months since that’s happened and I still can’t move/bend my big toe 😂

      Hey Austin. Thanks for the question. Sounds like you might have mildly dislocated one of the joints of your great toe OR tore away some of the supporting ligaments. Neither is fun but both fit the timeline you are discussing. Ligament injuries typically take a LOT longer than bone to heal and they will do so with much more soreness and deformity like swelling and nodules around the joints.
      Short story is that you will continue to have less pain day by day. Pain tolerated movement and as much support as you can give it is the best medicine at this point. Depending on your BJJ game, you should be good to roll. If you're a big spider guard guy or a fast pass player, it might limit you some. But this sounds like a great time to work on your heavy guard passing and top control game; both of which place less demand on your great toe for power or as a rudder.
      I hope this help. PLEASE be sure to check out our BJJ Physio RUclips page, IG and fbook profiles for more vids and info on injuries like you had. I broke my big toe today somehow when a much larger guy shot a double leg on me. The E.R. doc said I couldn't train for at least 6 weeks. This was only my 3rd roll, I don't want to stop going to class or have to sit on the sidelines for 6 weeks. Is there anyway I can tape/stabalize it so I can at least still drill and light spar? As I understand it, healing will occur as long as the great toe joint is isolated from any articulation? Tia

    • @SPARKPhysiotherapy
      @SPARKPhysiotherapy  11 месяцев назад

      Yeah, but that's a tough one to stabilize on the mat. Take the rest. Let the bone heal. That time will go by quick. Sorry.

Don't know why, it's not swollen or changed color. just hurt when walking. I can move toe too. Will help this. If I go to the doctor they will say I came because of nothing. Our health sistem is very bad.

    Hey thanks for the vid. I quite often roll on my big toe or 2nd biggest toe just by stepping awkwardly. It hurts for a while but I usually just walk it off and try to remember to tape it up to avoid firther injury. But I've just accidentally kicked a chair and it's set it off again, quite painful but no excruciating. I don't mind but it's normal for it to keep hurting right? For a long time? Is there any long term damage of this injury if it keeps happening?

    • @SPARKPhysiotherapy
      @SPARKPhysiotherapy  3 года назад +1

      I'd def recommend you keeping that toe protected for as long as it takes to "stay out of the way" on the mats. Rolling over toes or jamming them on the mats or mat tape is pretty common. The more you do it the more likely you are to roll a toe again. Keep them protected by taping them together. Or if you've got a flexion or extension biased injury, then there are lots of cool taping techniques to help. This vid is just a small sampling.

    Question, i got a middle toe injury 4 weeks ago. My profesor said it didn't broke but got twisted bad, so i have got better, but some a part of my toe is still swollen my question is after 4 weeks is it normal that my toe is a little bit swollen?

    • @SPARKPhysiotherapy
      @SPARKPhysiotherapy  4 месяца назад

      Yes. Swelling would still be present only 4 weeks after a bad soft tissue injury. No worries... yet

    Long story short, I recently had to tape two of my toes together, the ones right next to the big toe. I almost immediately felt that I was irritating my big toe in that entire area. It wasn't long before there was all kinds of problems with that. Then that's subsided and now I am having trouble with other part of my foot, I just know it is from overcompensating, etc. Any thoughts on this? Is this common?

    • @TheBJJPhysio
      @TheBJJPhysio 2 года назад +1

      I can't say if what you're feeling is common. When we take loads off of one side of our foot, it's for sure going to ask for more work from the other side. If buddy taping was the fix for the issue you had first, then you may have just used that for a bit too long. I'd suggest taking a peak at our foot control programs on the bjj-physio.com website. Get to work on your foot and hip control to unload the parts of your lower extremity that need a break. If you need more help, I'd be happy to set up a virtual visit with you to discuss. You can sign up for your VV via our site (www.bjj-physio.com) or on our IG BIO (@bjjphysio). Let us know! Oss.

    Guys, i got my big toe broken recently, now its quite ok but i still can feel it when i do bad move in sparing(bjj) will it help if i tape it with index toe together or its useless?thanks

    • @SPARKPhysiotherapy
      @SPARKPhysiotherapy  6 месяцев назад

      If the toe is broken, there's no amount of tape that's going to fix it. That should take 8 or so weeks to fully heal. Now, if you injured the soft tissues, but didn't break the bone... well that's a different story. Keeping it taped to a buddy toe might help but also might not. Hard to tell without seeing the foot right in front of me.
