I’ve gotta say, having played Durge in both major ways, going full murder hobo is fun for like a couple hours then the narrative gets really unsatisfying. On the other hand, resistant Dark Urge is one of the coolest story lines I’ve experienced in a game. It’s the playthrough that actually made me like Astarion.

I've started a run with my friends, where we play as a group of magical girls. Every character has a color and can only use abilities and elemental powers that would be expected of that color. We also have to save everyone (and sadly anyone hostile has to die because with spells we cannot really use non-lethal attacks).
I have a bard as the pink and I can only use psychic dmg, buffs or my mace in combat.
A friend brought a wizard as the blue and only uses cold and lighning spells.
Another friend plays as a druid who only uses thorn whip and shillelagh basically.
We made Shadowheart the yellow, respecing her as life domain cleric so she is a better healer/supporter.
We made Karlach into a sorcerer using fire spells.
Minthara will be the purple who only joins us after her redemption ark and her assigned element will be thunder (we aren't far enough into the story, so we don't know what class she will be yet).
Laezel will be the silver who only joins us for a short while (we haven't recruited her early, so we will meet her at the mountain pass and will go to the creche with her immediately. We will probably keep her as a fighter, but we might yet come up with a better idea to fit the narrative.
With the basket full of equipment mod, we could even dress up everyone in their own color, so we also look like the part (still thinking about some transmog mod to be able to use some vanilla equipment set bonuses)

My very first playthrough when the game release was playing the Dark Urge as a Duergar Paladin of Vengeance. I wanted a character that various NPCs in the world would prejudge as being evil, who had the urges to do evil things, but was trying to remain good. It went far better than I had anticipated and is still one of my favorite playthroughs. I'm currently playing another Dark Urge, but this time I'm a Drow Sorcerer and embracing all of the urges.

My favorite run I’ve done is something similar to Pokémon. It is a nuzlocke run of the game. Essentially what happens is if a companion falls in combat you cannot pick them up or revive them and they can no longer be used during the playthrough. I like this idea a lot because it makes use companions you would not normally use like Halsin or Jahera. Also made me use my brain trying to come up with the best builds for each characters, whether it be sticking to their original class or respecing them entirely

For the Epic Failer variant you can also play around being drunk, there's even equipment for it! The condition gives you disadvantage on dexterity and charisma rolls.
This is not my idea but something I found refreshing for making the Dark Urge feel less controlled.
They have unique dialogue checks so the idea is that you roll a physical dice outside the game to resist selecting these options. You could add your character's Wisdom modifier if you wanted a little more consistency. The difficulty checks proposed were DC5 for just saying something Dark Urge, DC10 for hurting another character and DC15 for killing someone.
It does require some knowledge of how certain encounters play out and sometimes the example phrases don't predict the outcome as well as you'd like, but it makes Durge play throughs more variable than just Redemption or Acceptance

Fun ideas from my end. Some of them i did or still want to so myself
    1) What i once did: Playing a Tymora cleric and making decisions with my companions under the Self fulfillment aspect of that deity. Let companions make their own choices if possible and see what happens. You might get surprised ☘️
    2) Playing Dark urge as a wild magic sorcerer/ Archfey warlock. She didn’t really act evil or good, but mostly made funny or chaotic decisions. I had a ton of fun with that :D
    3) Playing a tiefling paladin, taking all the racism in the Emerald grove and then save everyone. The reactions after that are very rewarding actually
    4) Playing a bard who kills every enemy possible by making them commit suicide. The comments of companions can be very funny 😂
    5) Playing a Druid, who saves the Druids from their own mistakes and show them how it’s done. Just alongside, romancing Halsin in order to date the bear as a bear. Still on my list 🐻
    6) Playing the light urge idea as an Aasimar. Trip‘s Whispers of the divine will hopefully make it possible. Still on my list 🪽
    7) Playing the weirdest and weakest combo, to see how far they get. Still on my list
I hope it can help for inspiration, too ;)

Disguise self spells can help change up interactions in alot of instances, like going to the Githyanki cresh with a Githyanki Tav will obviously give you Githyanki unique dialogue, however same can be achieved with disguise self spell.

im on my 5th playthrough, my biggest tip for always having new playthrough ideas is really planning out what ending you want and what major choices your going to make that are different from the previous runs. the main thing that keeps me motivated is focusing on one companion and making a tav that suits them. Ive always liked the roleplaying side to bg3 even it seems childish. right now im playing as a lawful good teifling and focusing mainly on karlach and wylls story. also i recommend playing as the origin characters at least once! you get new dialogue! ALSO mods help a LOT with playthrough ideas, in one of my runs i downloaded a mod to be an aasimar and it was sooo fun (ive also 100% the game, i do play the game like a dating sim sometimes but i still enjoy the combat and story)

  • @ManubibiWalsh

I have enjoyed every run I have done so far (I have only played custom/Durge characters and refuse to play origin runs because I love the voice acting too much and I don’t wanna be playing a whole run without hearing, like, Lae’zel’s voice. If the voice tracks get added on later I might consider it though, especially because I’m very curious about the plot details you can unlock that way). I have particularly enjoyed my run as a Durge tiefling bard bedding (and romancing) Astarion and Halsin at the same time, and every monstrosity throwing themselves at me. That was on my third run, and now I have to say bard might be my second favorite class together with ranger and druid.
So, my first run was probably the boring one (but I enjoyed it IMMENSELY) because I played a half-elf ranger Tav on explorer mode and didn’t know how to multiclass so she stayed “just” a ranger until the very end. Second run, I played as another half-elf Tav but I experimented with multiclassing there, I have absolutely no idea what classes I used there. My third run was possibly the most fun, I played as a tiefling bard Durge and literally fucked everything that moved and got through so many difficult interactions just with charisma, and it REALLY made me understand the importance of having a decent level of charisma especially in dnd sessions. I also rejected Bhaal on that run and in every run I had Astarion not ascend. And now I’m playing as a Lolth drow, Durge again, as a sorcerer and bard mix, I’ll accept Bhaal this time and ascend Astarion (and rough him up and put him in his place if I kiss him and he disrespects me because I learnt you can do that too and ooooooh niceeeee like I love him but I do not accept to be disrespected, especially as a drow Bhaalspawn, like I love him to death but I will NOT be disrespected!!) and I’m slowly learning more about the game’s mechanics and how to build my party in a way that’s efficient. I really love stacking buffs and the tactical aspect of the game, which is surprising because I never really liked tactical games….. still don’t, for the most part, but this game makes it so incredibly interesting and rewarding!

@@thomasrosendahl2783 that is an excellent build, and has the advantage of only needing to rely on Charisma as a casting stat (plus the bent circlet of intellect). I was thinking 5 Knowledge Cleric for the 3rd level cleric spells. The downside being that the build is very multi attribute dependent. Of course the extra magical secrets can get the character some very solid spells. Knowledge Cleric also brings Blessings of Knowledge and Knowledge of the Ages. Getting as much dialog and cutscenes as I can and find as many secrets as possible while following a strict set of chaotic lawful self-imposed extra rules.
One day I want to try a more "chaotic neutral" fun playthrough where the "Eleventh Commandment" is more important than actual morals: as long as I don't get caught and prevent my companions from disapproving too much, I'm fine. Steal everything that isn't nailed down, shamelessly exploit game mechanics all the time, use all the tadpole powers, get as many permabuffs as I can. Eat the cake and keep it when ever there is a way. And so on.

The idiot idea is the opposite of most of the characters I make! ^_^" I can't resist keeping Intelligence and Wisdom decent because it's part of ny usual playstyle in RL D&D, and I have a tendency to strategize and/or randomly know something because of all the lore (and actual information) I gave memorized, and have a hard time leaving that out of roleplay. That said, I also have an overall tendency to put low priority on Strength and Charisma unless I'm playing a class focused on them, with Charisma fails probably being my most common thing going wrong in my current playthrough as an unreasonably smart but socially inept Ranger Durge...

One suggestion I will always give to anyone who listens: Romance Minthara! "Yeah I did that on my last run, I knocked her out at the-" NO! If all you want is a strong paladin drow mommy snarking in the background and telling you to do the evil thing, yea sure knock her out and have fun. But I promise you, if you give even half a shit about her as a character, you HAVE to side with the goblins and kill the grove and all those tieflings, and then you WILL sleep with her. I am DEAD serious.
You miss out on SO much of her story when you knock her out. Hell it's possible to fight and KO her without even SPEAKING to her in act 1. By siding with her you get to see exactly how she was under the Absolute's control, how that contrasts with her moments of lucidity both during and after her sex scene, and how it's less the effect of slipping out of mind control that you might be used to seeing in fiction, and more of a crisis of faith for someone deep in a cult. And when you finally reunite in act 2, the dialogue when you rescue her has changed too (my tip: make sure you enter her mind rather than just fighting and killing her captors first) and it acknowledges your previous relationship! It is a fantastic way to start her romance, especially if you're playing Dark Urge.
And on top of that you still don't have to commit to a full on "evil" playthrough; I sided with her in my first playthrough as a Tav who was regretful for what happens in act 1 (but still head over heels for her) and the rest of my campaign was not too dissimilar to any other "good" playthrough. Literally do what you want after act 1, but this is THE intended way to romance Minthara, and it is still the best in my not-so-humble opinion.
I say it here because I have seen SO many people respond to this advice like "oh nooo but I could NEVER kill the tieflings I just can't BRING myself to" And I don't know how to politely tell them that it is just a game, Minthara is not a Real person, and neither are the Tieflings, please just calm down, you can do this, I believe in you. And if your current Tav/Durge is the kind who Wouldn't, then change them/make a new oc who Would. It's actually not as hard to justify as you think, and it's not a Durge-only sorta course of action.
Come on. If you can Ascend Astarion or DJ that Shart, you can do this for Minthy. Please.

I did kill the tieflings with minthara, but I was very dissapointed about the outcome. its only a one night stand with her. you cannot go into a relationship with her, which would be so interesting, mostly when you play the dark urge.
The only char I really think is boring, is halsin. I would not mind, if he would not be a companion. and I do not need 2 druids. So I always have him kidnapped in act 3 ;-)
