For more Steve Martin, you should try Parenthood (1989) also starring Rick Moranis and Keanu Reeves as well as My Blue Heaven which is another Martin/Moranis team up.
My Blue Heaven was hit and miss to me, but enjoyable. Parenthood, though? That is a classic. The comedy AND the drama is so well-written and so down-to-Earth. That whole extended family feels like everyone's family somehow.
If you enjoyed seeing Steve Martin and Victoria Tennant in this one, Ashleigh, I highly recommend you see both of them along with the incomparable *Lily* *Tomlin* in ALL OF ME (1984), one of my all-time favez. #AshleighBurton #MickJackson #LAStory1991
Especially of the time period. Who can forget the era of freeway shootings? That was so funny. Steve had a movie showing his love for LA on par with Woody Allen's love of New York.
I lived in L.A. and O.C. when this came out and the theater was so loud with everyone laughing at the very LA-ness of it all. That and the scene from "Edward Scissorhands" when the father is stapling fake snow to the roof... very LA!
I am so glad you saw this. It's a forgotten gem. Keep rewatching, there are so many subtle and hidden jokes to discover. For instance, the hotel they all go to is called El Pollo del Mer. That translates to Chicken of the Sea.
I *LITERALLY* ran into Steve Martin, his wife, and Paul Simon on Amsterdam Ave. in NYC. My girlfriend and I were on the way to the Broadway Baby to see an acapella group, when the three of them came walking out of restaurant. The five of us collided, made sure everyone was okay while apologizing, and then went our separate ways. A few seconds later, my girl and I stopped and realized we'd LITERALLY crashed into celebrities. 🤣
Since we are telling ran into stories, coming out of a bathroom at a restaurant i ran into James Avery (uncle Phil) from Fresh Prince. We almost collided,he was a huge dude.
That's John Lithgow as the guy staring at the sign at the beginning. He was supposed to have a whole character arc, which was totally cut except for this one brief shot.
5:56 Larry Miller. Character actor; you might recognize him as the father in “10 Things I Hate About You,” he was also in “Pretty Woman.” 6:07 The British actress is Victoria Tennant; she and Steve Martin were married at the time this film was made. They met while making a previous film together (which I highly recommend) “All of Me,” also starring Lily Tomlin. 8:00 SJP had that hair pretty much throughout the 80s and into the 90s. Yeah, it has a life of its own. 25:04 Young Mel Gibson. It’s a shame you didn’t like “Roxanne” as much, but it’s like a Mel Brooks parody; if you never saw the original, it’s harder to get the jokes. (“Roxanne” is a takeoff of “Cyrano De Bergerac.”)
Along with Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid, one of my favorite Steve Martin movies and one I have never seen anyone react to before.
I also love Steve Martin, and this is a fun movie. The reason there are so many Shakespeare quotes and references (such as Rick Moranis as the grave digger, and the skull) is because this movie is (VERY) loosely based on Shakespeare's "The Tempest". Thanks Ashleigh, that was fun.
You sort of zipped through the Rick Moranis Yorick scene that was inspired by HAMLET, cued by the gravestone for Shakespeare, and the skull of Yorick scene from the play: "Alas, poor Yorick! I knew him, Horatio; a fellow of infinite jest, of most excellent fancy; he hath borne me on his back a thousand times; and now, how abhorred in my imagination it is! My gorge rises at it. Here hung those lips that I have kissed I know not how oft. Where be your gibes now? Your gambols? Your songs? Your flashes of merriment, that were wont to set the table on a roar? (Hamlet, V.i)" This has always been one of my favorite movies; it perfectly skewers the mores and quirks of Los Angeles of the day (which is relatively timeless). No comment on Woody Harrelson? "Let me see the menu with its prices." Um, any traditional good restaurant (that isn't for hicks) doesn't include prices on the menu. Or there may be two menus, one with prices and one without, but you only get the one with prices if you especially ask. Sam Spade is, of course, one of the most famous detectives in English language fiction, being the main character of one of the two creators of the field of "hard-boiled detective," Dashiell Hammett. Spade was the protagonist of THE MALTESE FALCON, one of the most famous detective movies and noir movies and American movies of all time, played by the great Humphrey Bogart. If you somehow haven't seen the movie, you must, of course. "What is that supposed to mean?" That he has clanging balls of steel, he said in a deadpan British voice. Colonics have been a popular thing in health-food circles since the 1960s, by the way. The whole movie is making fun of Los Angeles fads. It seems clear that you didn't recognize George Plimpton giving the weather. (Google him.) In real life, Victoria Tennant and Steve Martin were married for several years after this film.
The movie is Maltese Falcon, it's the stuff dreams are made of. That is, if your dreams include sweaty guys like Humphrey Bogart, Sydney Greenstreet and Peter Lorre.
I am SO happy you reacted to this movie! LA STORY is one of my very favorite movies, but it flew under the radar for so many people. The two sections of the movie set to Enya songs (the scene where they revert to children in the neon flower garden, and the big Magical Weather Change climax of the movie) make me cry every time. (Oh -- and that "revert to children" wasn't because the sex was so great; it was because they were so in love that the magic of the moment reverted them internally to the innocence of childhood, where **everything** was magical; the regal lion statues bowing their heads to them as they passed by acknowledged this.) There are a LOT of decade (or even *year* ) specific cultural trends that this movie is making fun of; you caught many of them. YES, car-shooting on the LA Freeway was *real* ; this is actually where the term "road rage" came from. There was a period of time (months? a year??) where people were getting so mad at or during the notoriously bad traffic on the LA Freeway that yes, some were actually shooting at each other. It made national news for a while, including cover stories on *TIME* and *Newsweek* , IIRC. Yes, high colonics were a big New Agey sort of thing; they were the late '80s - early '90s version of "a cleanse." They're called "high colonics" because enough water is put up yer bum to reach into the upper part of the large intestine -- the colon -- instead of just the lower part which is the usual in an enema. It ~really~ flushes you out. The suction-cup Garfield cats were *huge* for a while. Everyone had them attached to the inside of the side or rear windows of their cars. Steve Martin's character having one on the *outside* of his rear window was really funny at the time. And just an in-movie joke, like the snooty restaurant L'Idiot -- the name of the resort they all went to, "El Pollo del Mar," translates to "Chicken of the Sea."
Alyx, I'm curious how old you are. You said the film "flew under the radar", but it was a HUGE film when it came out. It was well-received at the time as a classic, and played non-stop on cable in the following years. I'm wondering if maybe you are too young to remember this coming out, and weren't aware of the impact it had back then. Aside from that, i can tell from your comment that you really "get" this movie, and that's great, because i don't think Ashleigh really "got" it, except on a very surface level, and a lot of the jokes went over her head.
I'm old enough to remember when it came out; I saw it multiple times at the theater. Didn't have cable at the time, so I missed out on its run there. Huh.... I probably phrased that part of my initial comment poorly. It struck me at the time that the movie did make a splash when it came out, but then floated away pretty quickly, and didn't have any lasting cultural reaction (probably because I didn't have cable). I'm glad to find out I was wrong. 😊
@@trekkiejunk I’m old enough to remember and although this was critically well received, did well at the box office, it was totally overshadowed by Silence of the Lambs and Terminator 2.
@13:08 is a nod to Shakespeare. In Hamlet there is a scene with a gravedigger who Hamlet talks to and he picks up the skull and find out he knew the deceased: Yorick the court jester.
Another fun movie that stars and was written by Steve Martin (and that doesn't get nearly as much attention as it deserves) is "Bowfinger." It's a spoof about Hollywood and the film industry, starring Eddie Murphy, Heather Graham, and Christine Baranski. I think you'd really like it.
I LOVE that movie, and back in the seventies, I lived in that same neighborhood as Bofinger's house. Also, I was an extra in Diggstown, which was Heather Grahams first movie. My friend and I sat and talked with her during a break in filming.
"I didn't realize [Steve Martin] was, like, a writer." Articles for The New Yorker, a number of books and plays, and a few screenplays. Seriously, I'm convinced he can do just about anything in the arts and humanities.
@@Kaddywompous Yep! Big break was writing for the Smothers Brothers. Also: Ashleigh should definitely seek out some of his standup, if she's never actually seen it. It's so peculiar and specific, but so good.
"What? She'll be 27 in 4 years!" Haaaa, that line is still perfect after all these years. Steve has written a LOT of stuff over the years, his books are quite good. One of those was Shopgirl, which was made into a movie with him and Claire Danes. Then there are his short stories, which are ridiculously hysterical and I highly recommend. There's simply no such thing as a bad Steve Martin work.
The female lead in this movie, Victoria Tennant, was married to Steve Martin. That was indeed Rick Moranis as the gravedigger. There are also cameo appearances by Woody Harrelson and Patrick Stewart (with a mustache). I think of this film as Martin's Annie Hall (another great movie you should watch). For me, Martin's funniest movie is The Man With Two Brains. Can't wait till you get around to that one. Another good Martin movie is All of Me co-starring Lily Tomlin. It's directed by Carl Reiner, who directed The Jerk, Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid, and The Man With Two Brains.
Aw I've always loved this movie ever since I saw it in my youth. Steve Martin has done just so many good movies. Parenthood and the Father of the bride movies are definitely ones to check out
Ashleigh, please add the Steve Martin film “All of Me” to your viewing list. Also starring the love interest from L.A. Story, and Lily Tomlin. One of my favorite Steve Martin films.
I loved this movie when it came out! Watched it countless times. To this day I still joke about the "half caf decaf with a twist of lemon" coffee order. 😆 You must watch Dirty Rotten Scoundrels!!!!!!!
Looks like Rick Moranis did his accent so perfectly he fooled you into thinking it wasn't him. Some clever writing from Steve Martin here. Steve was on a role in those days, cranking out the comedy movies. A lot of the same people wind up in these movies. It was Steve's crowd. Make no mistake, Steve Martin worked hard to become a great comedic personality.I will offer up 3 films as suggestions: #1 Down and out in Beverly Hills #2 Revenge of the Nerds #3 Annie(1982)
Got to love the "interview" with the restauranter at the bank.. Patrick Stewart was just pitch perfect in that cold clinical role. You just think, "yup . That gotta be how Wack-afornia" really works". Lol
Now that you live in Nashville you should know that Steve Martin loves this town. He used to perform at the Exit/In on Elliston. He'd get the audience all excited, lead them out into the street and walk everybody down to McDonald's where he'd order two thousand cheeseburgers before suddenly changing his mind and saying, "No, just one small fries."
As an ex-resident of L.A., I can attest that everything you see in this movie has happened at least once in real life. I was born and grew up, from the mid 50s through the 80s, 20 miles south of downtown. To many, myself included, this was the "golden years" of Southern California.
You have to understand that this is a love story and the lovers are Steve Martin and Los Angeles. It is Steve Martin's vision of one of Woody Allen's homages to New York only with Los Angeles instead....and much funnier than Woody Allen has ever been.
Woody had his moments, but it was often too intellectual to make it enjoyable. In Annie Hall, he had a scene where he pulls Marshall McLuhan to put down a pseudo-intellectual pontificating about media. The meta moment only works if you know about who Marshall McLuhan is.
I had forgotten about Patrick Stewart (Jean Lucy Picard / Charles Xavier / Royal Shakespeare Company) being in this movie as the snooty French guy! Completely forgot about that. This would have been right in the middle of Star Trek: The Next Generation. What a fun cameo!
"Who kisses people hello?" The French, Belgians, Italians, and people in the theater. Or at least we did before Covid. "I know that guy. He's been in other stuff," was Larry Miller, who has been in lots of films and TV. The face in the thought bubble, "I don't know who that is but I get the joke," was Mel Gibson. Rick Moranis as the gravedigger was a parody of the graveyard scene in Hamlet. Steve Martin is extraordinarily erudite and will pepper his scripts with classical allusions. Richard E. Grant (Roland) who has had a long career, was nominated for an Oscar for _Can You Ever Forgive Me._ He's likely best known for the British cult film _Withnail and I._ Marilu Henner (Trudi) was in the great 80s sitcom _Taxi,_ along with Christopher Lloyd and Danny DeVito. The maitre d' at _L'idiot_ was Patrick Stewart. Woody Harrelson (Harris's boss) was in the long-running sitcom _Cheers_ along with Kirstie Alley. Kevin Pollack has been in many films, and most recently played Moishe Maisel (the ex-father-in-law) in _The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel._ The reason the film has so many fine actors in small roles is that everyone wants to work with Steve Martin.
Had this movie recorded on a VHS tape and watched it all the time growing up. The fantasy elements and silliness were what brought me back, didn’t even get all the jokes and adult themes.
Love this movie. I think my favorite line is when he finds out his girlfriend is cheating on him and he says: “My agent? Frank? And this is how I find out? You TELL ME!?” Ugh so funny. And then he leaves and starts that little dance down the stairs. Love it
I don't remember if you've done "All of Me" or not, nut you get Steve Martin, Lily Tomlin, and Victoria Tennant (the love interest from this film and his wife at the time). Steve Martin actually writes the majority of the projects he does (Movies, TV, and music).
Love this movie, thanks for the reaction. I love the little throw away bits he put in the movie like L'Idiot and the name of the hotel by the beach, Pollo Del Mar, which is Spanish for Chicken of the Sea. Someone else here recommended Bowfinger, another movie Steve Martin both wrote and stars in. Very funny.
I was just thinking about this movie (which I love) yesterday and lamenting the fact that I hadn't seen a reaction to it yet. Bless you, Ash. You are a Golden Goddess of the South, and a beacon of Light in these Dark Times.👍✌❤
I love this movie. It introduced me to the wonderful music of Enya, before she exploded with her second album. Also, the maître d' is played by Sir Patrick Stewart.
My friend Andrew Amador is in this movie! He's the serious newscaster. He always spoke of how he loved the "pre-code" era of motion pictures. He loaned me his copy of Shanghai Lilly and it blew my mind.
Such a cute movie. Steve Martin did a movie called The Lonely Guy. Really funny! You should check it out. Also Ashleigh, you should watch the 1954 movie Brigadoon, starring Gene Kelly. It is a delightful film about a magical Scottish village that appears only once every hundred years. It is a whimsical love story, and because it stars Gene Kelly it has songs and dance numbers in it.
My late mother loved Brigadoon. I love me some old musicals, but Brigadoon is a tough one for me. It's just too quaint. Although i did love the ending (I won't spoiler it for others). Singing in the Rain is lightyears better, as far as i'm concerned. I also love Anchors Aweigh, partly due to Sinatra's wide-eye innocent character.
@@trekkiejunk I’m not much of a musical fan, but those you mentioned are pretty good too. On the Town is another good one, very much like Anchor’s Away. Brigadoon is very quaint and I think it is timeless(pun intended) because everyone longs for a simpler time now and then. Maybe I just like Gene Kelly. He’s talented and fun to watch.
Brigadoon is my favorite too but I don't think it is as easy for people to get into. I think Ashley would like 7 Brides for 7 Brothers or the Gene Kelly/ Judy Garland movie, The Pirate. Those have more comedy and flash
Happy Weekend Ashleigh Though rare, LA does get heavy rains like in the movie. I am sure you heard of the mudslides and flooding of some houses / communities near the mountains and burn scar areas. High colonics are enemas in the ass. Hence colonics for colon. I could not afford a high one so I only got a low colonic. )))😁😆😂 The 'wife' is Marylu Henner. She is famous for tv series "Taxi" and many other roles. But us is also famous for being one of those very rare people that can remember just about anything that happened in her life, known as hyperthymesia. Yes, the gravedigger was Rick Moranis. The other guy you tried to remember who "was in other stuff" is Tom Miller. He can be recognized for "Pretty Woman", "Necessary Roughness", "Corrina, Corrina", "The Nutty Professor", "10 Things I Hate About You", "Runaway Bride", "Pros and Cons", "The Princess Diaries", "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" and several tv shows guest starring appearances. The 'boss' that fired him (Steve) was played by Woody Harrelson. He is famous for playing 'Woody' on "Cheers", 1994 film "Natural Born Killers", LBJ, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri, People VS. Larry Flynn, Zombieland, White Men Can't Jump, Edge of Seventeen among many others. "Where do you spend your summers" guy is Patrick Steward of the famous Captain John Luc Picard of Star Trek series. The 'man' Sarah JP was thinking of was Mr. "Braveheart" himself, Mel Gibson. There are several other cameos of famous stars playing bit part in the movie that you missed noticing. But since you said you may watch it again soon, hope you pick up on some of the others that were there even for a few seconds of film.
Martin met his ex-wife, Victoria Tennant (Sara McDowel), on the set of “All of Me.” Tennant said that, after meeting him, she went home & broke up with the guy she was living with. They were married for about a dozen years. As for “All of Me,” both Martin & Lily Tomlin were nominated for Golden Globes for best actor & actress. His movie, “A Simple Twist of Fate,” is based on the novel by George Eliot called “Silas Marner”...just like “Roxanne” was based on the play “Cyrano de Bergerac” which was loosely based on Bergerac’s life. If you are looking for a Steve Martin drama, though it was panned by the critics, I recommend Twist of Fate.
Loved this video! My husband and I quote this movie frequently. Steve Martin is a writer - comedy, scripts, novellas, novels. All great. He is one of the smartest guys around. Roxanne was of course, a comedic rewriting of Cyrano de Bergerac. His comedy is multi- layered and he can write pathos, too. “Shopgirl” the novella (also a movie) was really great, as was “The Pleasure of My Company”, “Object of Beauty”, and of course the comedic masterpiece, “Cruel Shoes”. Get to reading!
Why is this channel watching the most boring movies ever??? Are all her patreon supporters 50 to 80 year olds ??? WTF. React to cool movies like SIN CITY 2005 THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO 2011 WATCHMEN 2009 12 MONKEYS 1995 Actually cool movies not old lame stuff or wierd women movies.
This movie really reflects Steve Martin's personal sense of humor, probably more than any other. He loves highbrow stuff like art, film and poetry, but he hates the stuffiness and elitism of it, so he mixes it with absurdist humor to poke fun at those things. His books are all like that, too.
I love this, the whimsical nature of it was very appealing, and the payoff with the signpost is still hilarious to me. Doesn't get enough attention if you ask me, so glad you watched this and also loved it.
This is one of my favorite movies of all time. I grew up in So. CA and was going to school in Colorado when this movie came out. I was feeling a bit homesick. I never really liked So. CA but this movie reminded me of many of the good things about my home state. A lot of the comedy in this are based on real things that go on there: Shooting guns on the freeway, telling other people to go ahead at 4-way stops and then going all at once, sitting calmly through earthquakes and being able to estimate it’s size pretty accurately, etc. Some of my favorite quotes are from it, but I think the best is: “I don’t think you realize how unattractive hate is.” I’m glad you got to see it💕
5:31 Sam McMurray also played the guy who wanted to wife-swap in Raising Arizona. 5:55 the guy with the neck brace you recognized is Larry Miller, who I know you saw in Pretty Woman. 16:45 That’s Woody Harrelson firing Harris. 19:23, while you were noticing Chevy Chase, he was talking to Patrick Stewart as the maitre d’ at L’Idiot. Paula Abdul was skating around the hot dog stand.
I completely forgot that Richard E. Grant was in this. First thing I ever saw him in. He's such a wonderful actor, and based on interviews, a positively delightful human being.
If you're up for something fun and obscure with Richard E Grant check out the delightfully odd 1990s UK-Canadian cartoon 'Captain Star', where he plays a narcissistic space captain suffering a mid-life crisis. One of those rare cartoons back then secretly written for adults. They're up on RUclips and I think they're pretty funny. "His mission, to find new planets and civilisations, name them after himself, and sell them things "
Another great reaction, Ashleigh. This is one of my all time favourite films, I think that it's a beautiful fantasy, it deserves to be better known, I think that it will be a future cult classic.
Hi ashleigh. Really enjoy your reactions to movies. I am also glad that you decovered L. A. Story, which is one of my all time top 5 movies. Three are two movies for you take peek at. That is Vibes, Jeff Goldbrum. Cyndi Lauper. & peter fawlk. - (Columbo). And Date With An Angel. Michael E Knight. Emmanuelle Beart. & Phoebe Cates. Given your reaction to most movie you've viewed I think you might enjoy them. Anyway thank you for making me smile.
Hi I've got hold of a movie that I have to recommend to you, it's called Baby's Day Out. It is very, very funny. Even if you o ly get 1 or 3 people recommend it to you. It's a must watch movie. Home alone gone nothing on this movie. C u later.
This movie hits on every level- slapstick, social commentary, romantic, absurdity, as well as being the best-photographed and best-scored comedy of the 90's. A great film and one of my two favorite Steve Martin movies. The other one is "Leap Of Faith". Very different but one outstanding acting job by Steve and a top-notch cast.
Ashleigh: "Are you talking about enemas for fun?" Everyone has a kink. LOL Also Ashleigh: "Who is Sam Spade?" Me: "Ugh, I'm a dinosaur." Do a reaction to the "The Maltese Falcon". You will have some idea. Another great Bogie movie from the 40s. I dare say may be better than his "Rick" character from "Casablanca".
This movie is a satire. S Also I highly recommend THE. BIG CHILL, 1983 Comedy Drama where college buddies, Kevin Kline, Glenn Close, Jeff Goldblum, William Hurt, Tom Berenger, Mary Kay Place, Meg Tilly and Jobeth Williams, reunite following a friends funeral and listen to old rock and roll records while reminiscing about the good times and bad.

I am SO glad you got to this one. It is one of my absolute favorites - especially now that I live in the L.A. area. "I'll have a twist of lemon" - and we do get really rainy days sometimes. Just don't drive those days - yikes.
Thanks for this reaction, Ashleigh! "L.A. Story" is a quirky favourite of mine, and I'm so glad it brightened up your day. The line that brightened up my day: "If I was a boy, I would play with my ...." 🤣💀 Another Steve Martin flick that you might enjoy is "Father Of The Bride". It's actually a remake of a black-and-white classic, so you might want to watch the original first, but Steve's energy brings a lot to the story.
Steve Martin in his prime Silver Fox phase (I swear, this guy always had grey hair). Fun Fact: Steve did free banjo tutorials on his social media during the pandemic.
No one ever mentions it, but another Steve Martin movie (that I think Ashleigh could get into because of her religious upbringing) is Leap Of Faith, where Martin plays a con artist stage-evangelist who doesn't believe a word he's preaching, until he sees something that he can't explain.
It's been a while since I'd seen this, so long that I had Steve's character mixed up with his character in Grand Canyon (also from 1991) and was expecting a really dark turn.
It's been so long since I've seen this movie that I remember the plot but not the little details (apparently). I never knew there were so many cameos, from Rick Moranis to Chevy Chase to perhaps the most surprising of all (at least for me), Patrick Stewart as the restaurateur.
If you want to see Steve Martin play the straight man instead of the comic, I suggest "Housesitter". Martin plays a neurotic architect opposite Goldie Hawn playing a con artist who barges into his life by pretending to be his wife.
As someone previously mentioned, Ashleigh should see a lot more old movies so she understands it better! Certainly more Bogie and some Cagney! Without that background I think she'll really miss out on how great it is!
There are in fact deer in LA, and other forms of wildlife, particularly if you live near Griffith Park. I've had multiple encounters with groups of coyotes who seem genuinely offended to encounter a human out and about after two am, and the number of times I've almost been skunked is absurd for an urban environment.
Personally, I had always felt there is something special about this movie. There is a strange mystical romantic 'heart' to L.A. Story that really isn't seen in many movies, especially not quite like this, and unique - a quirky sonnet written by a hopeful poet. As far as films go it was a high concept film that took a lot of risk in its own skin. Much like another amazing Steve Martin movie I highly recommend called "Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid". Martin's vintage noir exploration that was way ahead of its time.
I agree taht there's a great romance along with the comedy. I think most movie romances make the main characters generically perfect, in the hope that everyone in the audience will fall for them. What makes this movie work is that Harris and Sara are perfect for each other; laughing at each other's jokes when no one else does.
Colon Hydrotherapy; Very '90s Los Angeles and why we never took a walk in LA. - Btw, if you love Steve Martin read his book "Born Standing Up." It's great.
So glad you reacted to this movie. One of my favorites. Another Steve Martin movie that has a lot of the same type of humor is A Simple Twist of Fate. It's a really good story and it's told very well. I think you'd like it very much.
Fun Fact: Steve Martin studied philosophy at university. Reading Wittgenstein made him consider becoming a professor, but he later changed his major to theater. There is a Wittgenstein joke in L.A. Story.
You, "And apparently stupid" Me, "It is L.A."🙄 It feels a little weird to see him not being a goofball. Like I didn't care for his character in "Planes, Trains and Automobiles". It might be too late for this month's "Love Stories" February but a suggestion that nobody's done yet is "Witness" with Harrison Ford and Kelly McGillis.😍😍
For more Steve Martin, you should try Parenthood (1989) also starring Rick Moranis and Keanu Reeves as well as My Blue Heaven which is another Martin/Moranis team up.
My Blue Heaven was great
My Blue Heaven was hit and miss to me, but enjoyable. Parenthood, though? That is a classic. The comedy AND the drama is so well-written and so down-to-Earth. That whole extended family feels like everyone's family somehow.

The love interest in this movie was Steve Martin's wife at the time. He basically wrote it as a love letter to her.
And to L.A., with a generous jab in the ribs, of course. 😉

I had read that but, ironically, forgot. She's got an eidetic memory.
Meanwhile I hardly remember any of mine.
That sounds like a nightmare
Apart from that fiver she owes me for a fish and chip supper, grumble grumble.
She’s famous from starring in the popular sitcom,Taxi, with Danny Devito, Christopher Lloyd,Tony Danza et al in case you don’t recognize her
Steve Martin is a genius writer. “I was deeply unhappy, but I didn’t know it because I was so happy all the time.” Is absurd yet relatable.
Such an L.A. thing to say at the time, as if you weren't happy in L.A., it was your fault.

I elbowed Damon Wayans in the chest at a comedy club. It was my fault.
That's John Lithgow as the guy staring at the sign at the beginning. He was supposed to have a whole character arc, which was totally cut except for this one brief shot.
I never knew that. 👍🏻
just checked out the deleted dinner scene.
Also, Patrick Stewart played the Maitre D' at L'Idiot.
5:56 Larry Miller. Character actor; you might recognize him as the father in “10 Things I Hate About You,” he was also in “Pretty Woman.”
6:07 The British actress is Victoria Tennant; she and Steve Martin were married at the time this film was made.
(“Roxanne” is a takeoff of “Cyrano De Bergerac.”)
i'd recommend the version of Cyrano with Jose Ferrer(1950). He really captured his "fire."
Watch All Of Me...excellent movie! Steve was so physically funny in that movie!!
He was so great in 10 Things. Seconding All of Me! Such a fun movie.
Larry Miller as the "dean" in the Eddy Murphy "Nutty Professor" movies gets to use his natural biting venomous sarcasm and is hilarious.
Didn't he also play Paulo the hairdresser in _Princess Diaries_ as well? 😁
Along with Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid, one of my favorite Steve Martin movies and one I have never seen anyone react to before.
I think we need to get Ashleigh through a few more black & white classics before Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid 😁
An LA Story reaction went up yesterday, coincidentally.
Agreed!
Yeah this is a deep cut. Big favorite of mine!
@@alisonrodger3360 Definitely, it would be wasted on her presently. She needs to be introduced to more legendary actors and actresses.
‘You’re taking a course in communication? Yes………..’. One of my favorite lines ever.
Wasn't it a course in conversation???
I also love Steve Martin, and this is a fun movie. The reason there are so many Shakespeare quotes and references (such as Rick Moranis as the grave digger, and the skull) is because this movie is (VERY) loosely based on Shakespeare's "The Tempest". Thanks Ashleigh, that was fun.
You sort of zipped through the Rick Moranis Yorick scene that was inspired by HAMLET, cued by the gravestone for Shakespeare, and the skull of Yorick scene from the play:
"Alas, poor Yorick! (Hamlet, V.i)"
This has always been one of my favorite movies; it perfectly skewers the mores and quirks of Los Angeles of the day (which is relatively timeless).
No comment on Woody Harrelson?
"Let me see the menu with its prices."
Um, any traditional good restaurant (that isn't for hicks) doesn't include prices on the menu.
"What is that supposed to mean?"
That he has clanging balls of steel, he said in a deadpan British voice.
Colonics have been a popular thing in health-food circles since the 1960s, by the way. The whole movie is making fun of Los Angeles fads.
It seems clear that you didn't recognize George Plimpton giving the weather. (Google him.)
In real life, Victoria Tennant and Steve Martin were married for several years after this film.
"Who is Sam Spade?"
I see another movie being added to the schedule.
(Oh -- and that "revert to children" wasn't because the sex was so great; it was because they were so in love that the magic of the moment reverted them internally to the innocence of childhood, where **everything** was magical; the regal lion statues bowing their heads to them as they passed by acknowledged this.)
There are a LOT of decade (or even *year* ) specific cultural trends that this movie is making fun of; you caught many of them.
Alas, poor Yorick! I knew him, Horatio. A fellow of infinite jest, of most excellent fancy.
And the English actress in this - Steve Martin's wife at the time - was Laurence Olivier's goddaughter
You need to see “All of Me” with Steve Martin and Lily Tomlin.
CHUBBY RAIN!
I LOVE that movie, and back in the seventies, I lived in that same neighborhood as Bofinger's house. Also, I was an extra in Diggstown, which was Heather Grahams first movie. My friend and I sat and talked with her during a break in filming.
"I didn't realize [Steve Martin] was, like, a writer."
Articles for The New Yorker, a number of books and plays, and a few screenplays.
Seriously, I'm convinced he can do just about anything in the arts and humanities.
And writing for television before he wrote for himself as a standup.
@@Kaddywompous Yep! Big break was writing for the Smothers Brothers. Also: Ashleigh should definitely seek out some of his standup, if she's never actually seen it. It's so peculiar and specific, but so good.
I know everyone loves Shop Girl but Pure Drivel is my favorite.
And years as a stand-up comic before al those things, including his first movie which came straight out of his act.
My favorite of Steve's books is How To Turn A Million In Real Estate Into $25 Cash.
I read Cruel Shoes when I was 10. My sense of humor is Steve Martin's fault.
More people should react to this comedy classic. It's criminally underappreciated. It didn't even get a domestic Blu-ray release til a year ago.
Aw I've always loved this movie ever since I saw it in my youth. Steve Martin has done just so many good movies. Parenthood and the Father of the bride movies are definitely ones to check out
You really should and must watch Martin's craziest and raunchiest film ever The Man With Two Brains.
I'm so glad you're getting back to the classics like this one! I hope you watch Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, maybe me all time favorite comedy!
That would be a perfect follow up to this reaction. Ashleigh really needs to find out why the cork is on the fork.
Yes! Y e s ! Y E S !!!
You must watch Dirty Rotten Scoundrels!!!!!!!
WOW, took forever for someone to review this GEM of a movie. One of my favorites from Steve Martin.
For real. Shame it fell on a channel that needs a ball-gag and a valium.
I saw this movie for the first time on tv by chance. And it quickly became one of my favorite movies!
As an ex-resident of L.A., I can attest that everything you see in this movie has happened at least once in real life. I was born and grew up, from the mid 50s through the 80s, 20 miles south of downtown. To many, myself included, this was the "golden years" of Southern California.
Yup. Some of it is exaggerated for comic effect, but not always!
LA Story is one of my top 3 movies of all time.
That’s what I noticed too!!!
Richard E. Grant (Roland) who has had a long career, was nominated for an Oscar for _Can You Ever Forgive Me._ He's likely best known for the British cult film _Withnail and I._
Marilu Henner (Trudi) was in the great 80s sitcom _Taxi,_ along with Christopher Lloyd and Danny DeVito.
Maisel._
The reason the film has so many fine actors in small roles is that everyone wants to work with Steve Martin.
Had this movie recorded on a VHS tape and watched it all the time growing up. The fantasy elements and silliness were what brought me back, didn’t even get all the jokes and adult themes.
I was 22 when this came out but I felt the same way. So much so I keep thinking it was made in 1982.
Love this movie. I think my favorite line is when he finds out his girlfriend is cheating on him and he says:
“My agent? Frank? And this is how I find out? You TELL ME!?”
Ugh so funny.
Pre-codes are amazing!
Have you seen Schmeggadoon?
Brigadoon is my favorite too but I don't think it is as easy for people to get into. I think Ashley would like 7 Brides for 7 Brothers or the Gene Kelly/ Judy Garland movie, The Pirate. Those have more comedy and flash
Happy Weekend Ashleigh
Though rare, LA does get heavy rains like in the movie. I am sure you heard of the mudslides and flooding of some houses / communities near the mountains and burn scar areas.
High colonics are enemas in the ass. Hence colonics for colon. I could not afford a high one so I only got a low colonic. )))😁😆😂
The 'wife' is Marylu Henner.
"My Girl", "L.A. Story" and "The Color Purple" still on the way?? Is it my birthday?
This seriously gives me hope for "Working Girl".
OMG - "The Color Purple" - I can't wait!! I hope you love it. It is a masterpiece.
Seen Novacaine ?
I Just mentioned Ashleigh Needs To watch All Of Me She'd Love it
I love All of me. Ashleigh would too I suspect
"All of Me" was very funny. "Back in bowl."
I love all of me. I hope she watches that one day
Loved this video!
This is such an underrated movie. Quirky in the best sense. Steve Martin is a treasure.
Yes this is a magical movie that's in my top 100 list.

You should know the definition of “underrated” before using the word.
This movie really reflects Steve Martin's personal sense of humor, probably more than any other. He loves highbrow stuff like art, film and poetry, but he hates the stuffiness and elitism of it, so he mixes it with absurdist humor to poke fun at those things. His books are all like that, too.
Loved him in Parenthood ✌️
I love this, the whimsical nature of it was very appealing, and the payoff with the signpost is still hilarious to me. Doesn't get enough attention if you ask me, so glad you watched this and also loved it.
Ashleigh, you NEED to watch "The man with two brains" It's the funniest Steve Martin movie, and criminally underrated.
Some of my favorite quotes are from it, but I think the best is: “I don’t think you realize how unattractive hate is.”
I’m glad you got to see it💕
This is the film that put Enya on the map. I saw this in the theater when I was very young. A lot of jokes in there only if you know LA.
Here’s another one: Sara’s mother was voiced by Terry Jones of Monty Python.
You have to read Grant’s film diaries book With Nails. It’s a fantastic read.
This is my favorite Steve Martin film. (Roxanne is next, but we can't all share the same tastes.) Such a delight!
Excellent reaction!
He wrote the screenplay for both films.
Another great reaction, Ashleigh. This is one of my all time favourite films, I think that it's a beautiful fantasy, it deserves to be better known, I think that it will be a future cult classic.

THIS. THIS! A stone cold classic. Those pheasants are for his pot. These eels are for my pot.
I concur. A truly hilarious movie. I NEED and Awkward Ashleigh reaction to 'Withnail and I'.
Ashleigh: "Are you talking about enemas for fun?"
Everyone has a kink. LOL
Also Ashleigh: "Who is Sam Spade?"
Me: "Ugh, I'm a dinosaur."
Do a reaction to the "The Maltese Falcon".
You will have some idea.
Another great Bogie movie from the 40s.
I dare say may be better than his "Rick" character from "Casablanca".

The music performance from Enya is quite beautiful placed in this movie. :)
This movie is a satire. S

@Ashleigh Burton You really should try watching _All of Me_ from 1984. The cast alone sells it.
As a kid I couldn't stop laughing at the toilet flushing scene.
For a minute I thought you were talking this one before realized which scene you meant.

The line that brightened up my day: "If I was a boy, I would play with my ...." 🤣💀
Another Steve Martin flick that you might enjoy is "Father Of The Bride".
Steve Martin went totally grey by 32 but started graying in his early 20’s. 👍🏻
This is indeed a fun, cute, movie. Been a while since I've seen it. It's probably where first real crush on SJP began.
Have you seen Grand Canyon? It's an amazing movie with this same vibe though more philosophical and less funny.
Grand Canyon and Spanish Prisoner are two great Steve Martin movies
Steve Martin in "IT'S COMPLICATED" with Meryl Streep is also a good watch! ❤

I love Bowfinger. I say this in all seriousness: Eddie Murphy should have, at a minimum, been nominated for an Oscar for that movie.
"Who is Sam Spade?" I predict a Maltese Falcon reaction in our future...
Love this film. Still have the VHS tape which I bought new as a 14 year old over 30 years ago!
Martin plays a neurotic architect opposite Goldie Hawn playing a con artist who barges into his life by pretending to be his wife.
allow me to recommend "Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid" as a Steve Martin movie for you.
i think it's one of his best.
L.A. STORY?? no, you need to watch "L.A. Confidential". Now that one is a superb film.
Sara's mother's voice was Terry Jones from Monty Python.
Ashleigh: "A deer!"
Me: "A female deer!"
I love this film for all the Enya in it.
Most people miss that the name of the hotel they stay at in Santa Barbara is "El Pollo Del Mar," which is Spanish for "The Chicken of the Sea."
The serious weather guy was George Plimpton, who wrote a book about pretending to quarterback in the NFL, called Paper Lion.
Colon Hydrotherapy; Very '90s Los Angeles and why we never took a walk in LA. - Btw, if you love Steve Martin read his book "Born Standing Up." It's great.
Such a great movie. Glad you liked it. And yes, that was Rick Moranis at 12:35 .
Steve Martin in “All of Me” is where I was impressed with his acting ability. Hope you get to see that one someday.
Ashley is giving out prizes left and right. She's the operah of giving away stuff.
So glad you reacted to this movie. One of my favorites. Another Steve Martin movie that has a lot of the same type of humor is A Simple Twist of Fate. It's a really good story and it's told very well. I think you'd like it very much.
Sarah Jessica Parker never looked hotter than in this movie.
Fun Fact: Steve Martin studied philosophy at university. Reading Wittgenstein made him consider becoming a professor, but he later changed his major to theater. There is a Wittgenstein joke in L.A. Story.
Because he’s circular, and goes downhill? No, wait. I’m thinking of the Guggenheim. 😉
You, "And apparently stupid" Me, "It is L.A."🙄
It feels a little weird to see him not being a goofball. Like I didn't care for his character in "Planes, Trains and Automobiles".
It might be too late for this month's "Love Stories" February but a suggestion that nobody's done yet is "Witness" with Harrison Ford and Kelly McGillis.😍😍
I can second Witness. My fave Harrison Ford movie.
