    Greetings, fellow Okie!
    I bombed around Tulsa on one of these for right at a year, a 2018 Street 500. My first ever Harley. I was blown away by how well the little bugger turned - they're nimble to the point of being twitchy. 492 pounds as you say, but I think most of it is at axle level or lower, it's carried well. My only big complaint about the bike was the mirrors - I ended up putting some mirror extenders on it. I took it on one trip from Tulsa to central Arkansas, and back, and it didn't give me any trouble until I tried to ride it over some fist-sized rocks on what I will charitably call a "road". I can confirm that it's *not* a dirt bike, but I did make it where I was going.
    I ended up trading the bike in last July. I tried a sportster, didn't like it. I ended up with a street rod 750, and that is the best bike I've ever owned.

    Hi, thanks for your great review. Just purchased one today, pick it up tomorrow. I’m a 5’3” 64 yr old woman and I’ve been riding for over 40 years. I took this out for a test ride and fell in love, it’s perfect for my size. It’s a great “retirement bike”...lol.

    I have had the 2015 XG500 starting a few months ago, and I love it. This is my first bike, never ridden before, and i feel comfortable on her. I had a couple issues when i bought it though... Fuel pump had a recall which supposively gotten replaced but still didnt work where the low fuel never came on and ended up stranded on the hwy. My dealer told me to use 91 octane, which would explain why the fuel pump 02 sensor went out. Mirrors are difficult to use and have to look sideways to use it. But, great mileage as I average at 50 mpg. lane splitting and filtering is easy at any speed. And she'll get a lot easier to ride and sound different when broken in, listening to this bike in the vid gives me memories of my engine when i first bought it. I had a hard time finding neutral and would get stuck in neutral somehow when going 2nd to 3rd. Wind can be a huge problem on the hwy, and I've gone up to 90mph on her. The harley luggage rack and back rest (luggage rack required for back rest) is around $400... And my biggest tip for those getting this bike would be to allow the 500 to warm up before riding

    • @RabidHedgehog

I was looking at the Rebel but at round same price point I bought the 500 street. No brainier Harley has the COOL factor. Plus you can't ware any HD shirt / Leather Jacket, ect without someone asking "what Harley do you own?". Do you really want to pull up to a biker bar with a Honda - lol - Perfect bike for me.

    Love your reviews, man! I took my MSF course on this bike and spent an additional couple days riding the 500 after I got my license. I enjoy the in-depth reviews you do of a range of motorcycles and I was wondering how this Harley Street 500 compares to the middle weight naked bike category? Something along the lines of the Z650, MT-07/XSR700, CB650R - all of which have more power than the Street 500, but are frequently recommended as "beginner" bikes. Since this is the only motorcycle I have seat time with, would that 650 class be too much of a jump for a first bike? Thank you!

    • @RabidHedgehog
      @RabidHedgehog  3 года назад +1

      It may become hard to find these machines as Harley has cut production with exception of providing them for their own Rider Academy courses. To be honest the other bikes are indeed faster, more powerful, lighter, etc. But they are all very tame as well as quick when slapped. That is kind of the thing with the other companies' machines in that they can be used as a beginner bike as they are easy to use, cheap to maintain, good handling, reliable as a sack of hammers, etc. But they also allow you to grow as well. You get that potential. The Street 500 is what it is, a beginner's machine, or a secondary machine to one that needs to run into town without their bagger. It presents itself as one of two things as you will quickly grow out of its potential, or like I did, ride it beyond its potential and shave some weight off the exhaust system chasing a VFR800 (although this was done with the Street 750 version but chassis and all is the same). I like the bike, loved the 750 version because of the extra power, but I know that it is just a commuter in quick around the block machine in the long run. The others, full of potential to go beyond just being a beginner. Hope that helps.

    I absolutely love my XG500. I had hard saddle bags put on her to make running errands around town easier and this coming spring I'll add a windshield for a bit of commuting. I do wonder if I should have gotten the 750 but after talking to a guy who rode his XG500 from Seattle to Milwaukee I'm not as sure anymore. I do like the look of the blacked out engine better than the silver fins of the 750. I wonder if I could have her blacked engine bored out to a 750? Then again why drop the gas mileage.

      In the US they are not that hard to maintain and parts are not bad as there is tons of distribution outlets. If you live outside then it could be more expensive on the parts side, but maintenance is still easy as unlike most Harleys there is only a single fluid required.

I'm 6 foot tall and couldn't find a comfortable position to save my life, also it got pretty hot learning how to ride in a parking lot... and I hate how the exhaust looks and the bike is heavy. After the class and getting my motorcycle license, I test rode a Moto Guzzi V7III... man what a difference. You would be a bit tall for this one and cramped up after a long ride. The 48 would allow you to stretch out a bit better due to the forward mounted pegs. I would suggest sitting down on both for 15 minutes a piece and see how they start to feel. Where are you from? If in the US the difference between the Street and the 48 in price would be minimal. I know in other countries that the engine size dictates the insurance.

    I bought this bike as my first one in May, 2017, but the first time I took it out on the Hwy, I noticed that its max speed was only 85 mph. I feel like I should have purchased the street rod 750 instead, already feel like I've outgrown my 500. Oh well, live and learn I guess.

    • @RabidHedgehog
      @RabidHedgehog  7 лет назад +6

      It is a tough spot for new riders to find the perfect bike. While training even a 125 can feel reasonably quick when in real world riding it is terribly slow. Also they are not 100% sure how they will use the bike and how fast they can progress in riding. The 500 is a great urban and short stint hauler as it can make the 70 MPH highway speed with ease if needed, and is nimble and quick enough for the city streets. But for long haul highway it is for sure not going to be the best for it as you maybe trying to hold formation with some larger bikes and also the buzzing in the higher RPMs might fatigue the rider a bit more. The 750 is a bike I did take out on long 4+ hour rides and it did fine due to its extra power and it can wander up to 115 roughly. If you need a good urban hopper you have the perfect bike and if you are able to keep it, pay it off, and then get the next bike and have that one sit next to it to perform that duty while the other gets the long hauls that would be the ideal position for that bike.

    • @RabidHedgehog
      @RabidHedgehog  6 лет назад +1

      Depends on your total leg length but at 5'4" it would still work for you and it is a fairly short seat height. But here is where the legs come into play. You will need to see if your right leg has clearance over the exhaust pipe when sitting at a stop cause it will get mighty toasty if you cannot clear it. I recommend taking a seat at a dealer as they allow you to, and check your leg on that pipe. I would also make a recommendation to take a look at the Vulcan S 650 and the Honda Rebel 500 as they are both good to start on as well with the Rebel 500 being the least amount of weight at 414 lbs max with ABS and the Vulcan S being a smidge lighter in the 482lb range while the Street 500 is at the 489 range. Hope this helps.

      To be honest with the cost you save on the Rebel, better fuel economy, better power, lighter and more fun chassis, it is better to go with the Rebel 500 for sure. I admit the Street 500 does have a better suspension setup and a better seat, but the Rebel can be modded to fix that in the money you save by going Honda.

  • @stelladyer9457
    @stelladyer9457 6 лет назад

    I think this would sell like hot cakes in the UK due to the licence law meaning that if you want to ride bigger bikes you have to take your test on a 500. Hmmm

    • @RabidHedgehog
      @RabidHedgehog  6 лет назад

      See the US works in different ways for different states. Oklahoma has a law at 14 years old you can ride a motorcycle 300CC and below but not on the major highways and only in the day and to and from school. At 16 though they can get a license for all sizes and times. How does the graduated system work?

    • @stelladyer9457
      @stelladyer9457 6 лет назад

      The licencing rules have changed since I took my test 18 years ago, but the Government is looking at the current rules and debating whether they need changing (again). At 16 you can ride up to 50cc with a speed 25 to 45 km/h (15.5 to 28mph), at 17 a category A1 light motorcycle of max 125cc, 11kW max and not more than 0.1kW per kilogram maximum. At age 19 you can ride a category A2 of 35 kW (about 47 hp) motorcycle of up to 0.2 kW per kg and not derived from a vehicle more than twice its power - something like a 350 or maybe a Triumph Street Twin that's been restricted to comply with the power limits.
      If you're over 21 you have to hold an A2 licence for over 2 years before you can take a further test on approx 500cc to gain an A licence and ride any bike you want and a trike over 15 kW. I am without a licence at the moment for health reasons, so will have to stick to horses and my pedal tricycle, but I do hope to ride a motorbike again eventually.
      Here in the UK we have a lot of bureaucracy to go through before getting any kind of licence, which makes it rather expensive!

I’ve been riding around on my dads 450 rebel and klr 250 and have decided that I like cruisers. I also like Harley’s street 500 quite a lot as well though, and have been doing some hard research. • @RabidHedgehog
      @RabidHedgehog  4 года назад

      I would still ride both of them to see what the better fit is for you. The Rebel is a great machine, but that seat takes some time to get used to. The Streets are more comfortable out of the box, a bit heavier, but generally heavily discounted as dealers cannot move them well. So far the HD liquid cooled bikes tend to have better reliability than their air cools. There is one more thing though, the transmissions. The Rebel is easy to use and smooth and the HD tends to be kind of clunky and hard to find neutral.

    I dont even need to watch this video or read anything or even ride the bike and I can tell you all kinds of bad stuff about this motorcycle. A. Harley actually had to TRY to make this bike far less of a machine than anything built in 2018 era has a right to be....They had to sit there and meetings and have their marketing types keep warning "Now PLEASE PLEASE do NOT give the buyer SHIT except for looks and reliability ....make SURE it is under powered and utterly lacking in every performance category other than safety ...because we sure as hell can not risk selling a great motorcycle for less than $8K! ALL we want is something to bring buyers into the shops so our sales team can go to work upselling!"
    This bike is totally aimed at the ignorant that only know what they like in terms of looks. Obviously Harley COULD use that basic same amount of material and labor and put out a bike that actually competes with other 500cc motorcycles ....they COULD have built a steller platform for an TRUE adventure bike/scrambler, a sports bike, AND still be able to offer a low end dog of a a cruiser ....but how do I know that marketing types are scared to death to mess with the formula....they are not about to allow the company to actually apply itself to building other than the same ol same o....anything else is just going to be halfassed but never "Let's go for it!" willingness to COMPETE... This company needs to fall so damn hard that it becomes a sitting duck for a hostile takeover by someone with some damn BALLS.
    Harley has been an embarrassment for decades to any American true motorcyclist...as in those who appreciate lofty goals of best handling/best power/best performance overall rather than this fad affair over looks and sound. I went riding today out to Julian California and there were probably 50 bikes there, 90% OLD MEN with their parked Harley Davidsons ....Harley has to be petrified what comes next after all these old duffers can't pull their overweight bikes out of the garage anymore....They got to be getting antsy and desperate how they can keep their gravytrain going ....the "bad" image is so worn out, SO not translating to youngsters... If they dont pull their HEADS OUT OF THEIR BUTTS? The company is seriously going DOWN
