How can someone hate Toriyama? Honestly. Even down to the humble way he depicted himself through his life as a guy who just liked to draw, look at boobs, and smoke a cigarette. He should feel like this mountain of a man. The man who redefined all of anime around himself and his aesthetic and his ideas, and yet he just felt like this funny uncle who would crack inappropriate jokes at a family gathering. That's what I remember most about Toriyama. He was just a man who wanted to create what he thought was fun and cool and no matter how successful he got, he didn't seem to change who he was at his core. It's an ideal that even today I strive for. The internal consistency of a master at their craft and a master at living their life for what they love.

Very well said. Just to share my rough experience - I remember waking up at 5am on Saturdays as a kid in the 90s to watch Dragon Ball (the OG series). I forget if it was Cartoon Network, but it might have been (eventually that slot went to Yu Yu Hakusho for yeeaaaarrrrs). I ended up being obsessed with the series and would watch what little of Z I could find, including the weekly slot of untranslated episodes for far later than we had in the US on the international channel we had on our cable provider at the time. After Z, they aired Slayers (again, raw Japanese episodes), and then one of the Japanese manzai duo Downtown's many variety shows, Hey! Hey! Hey! Music Champ. I didn't know who they were for SO LONG, but I still loved the show despite not understanding a SINGLE WORD at the time. I forgot about that for so many years (and only just now connected it to my future love of Gaki no Tsukai, the group Downtown is a part of), but later when I found Gaki no Tsukai I fell in love with their yearly 24 hour specials and then what translated episodes I could find (it's still hard to find them sometimes now even though Gaki no Tsukai is STILL GOING over 20 years later).
Toriyama was one of the most influential creators in my love of Japanese media, and I grew up *from birth* watching Transformers, Voltron (my hometown local channel, KPLR, is the one that originally created it as the weird hodgepodge it is and aired it), and then anything that had that distinctive quality from that time on. Comics, too. I actually fell in love with manga thanks to Rumiko Takahashi and Ranma 1/2. It's hard to put into words what someone who you've never meant means to you, but Toriyama has influenced the *entire world*. That is not an exaggeration. He is truly immortal. He changed the WORLD with his art.

This was supposed to be a short, simple manga about an old man and a tank which I made for my own personal enjoyment. But the tank was harder to draw than I expected, and I stubbomly insisted on drawing it all myself, so I came to regret ever getting involved with it. But the story was already plotted out to the end, so I couldn't change anything, and I went through hell drawing the whole thing.

What you said about Scavenger’s Reign really resonated with me. It’s one of those shows that exudes such freshness and attention craft, that each episode contained a scene or even just a line that had me going NO F*ING WAY and HOW IS EVERYONE NOT TALKING ABOUT THIS?? Or an interaction between characters that made me cry because of how specific it felt. I won’t spoil anything but there’s one character in particular who is so intoxicated by the past that he loses himself in it, which is so on point for the theme of this video.

Toriyama and Dragonball Z had such a huge impact on my childhood. Future Trunks being my all time favorite character, wanting to have his clothes and hairstyle. It also, like many, was my introduction to anime and seeing it as more than a cartoon. Getting home after school everyday to watch it and using my allowance to buy the VHS every week will never leave my memory. Hopefully him and Miura are watching us from the next life and are proud of their achievements.
    RIP Akira Toriyama

I am ugly crying at my desk right now because god damn, I was not ready for that send off for Akira. Dragon ball z on toonami was the one thing that I could always looked forward to after school. Not only did it introduce me to the wonderful medium of art that is anime and manga, but as someone who didn't have a strong male role model in my life, it taught me many valuable lessons about courage, perseverance, honor, family, and good vs evil. DB gets a lot of unjustified hate for being "a normie show with a weak story" but if normie means that as many people as possible can see part of themselves or see part of the person that they want to be in your art, I can't imagine a higher praise. I hope you are finally getting the rest that you so deserve you crazy, talented, passionate workaholic.

"Everything Grimbeard makes has this intangible personal feel which comes from the simultaneously detached yet passionate style of writing, to the syrupy goth aesthetic they drench every part of their videos in, to the background music that they write themselves.
    And I love that.
If I was to break down video essays into a simple formula, I would say that it is passion multiplied by a person’s ability to convey that passion, and Grimbeard maxes out both those categories."

I was a pretty skinny kid growing up which made my schools athletic requirements pretty rough on me. I joined my schools wrestling team for about three years and it was rough. Almost every match ended with me getting fucking slammed on the ground before I could do anything, and yet I kept working at it, pushing myself in every practice, throwing myself into every match. That’s the influence Vegeta had on me. He was this guy so prideful that he refused to let weakness define him. I always used to say Goku was my hero back then because he was so fearless, but I only realized when Toriyama passed away that it was Vegeta who I had always connected with. I struggle a lot with my self worth and what impressed me about Vegeta was that no matter the situation he refused to acknowledge he was lesser than anyone else. That’s something I still want to this day. I’m now in college and it’s dragged me to some of my darkest points in life, and yet three years in and I’m still here. Maybe I’m stubborn, maybe I’m just really good at picking myself up, but I do know that Vegeta is at least part of the reason for that.

vegetas arc has been one of the pieces of art that has made me feel the most seen, relating it to art, i saw myslef in the moment of ego death when you think that you are the best (at least in my facinity lol) and them realizing that there are people out there who are better than you. the rage that comes with that, all the times your ego will step in to try to protect you but the ultimate peace you archieve inside you when you learn to be okay with that and being finally able to see your own worth from within, not from comparing yourself to those around you.
vegeta made me feel seen and understood in a time of my life when i really needed it, thank you Akira Toriyama

Toriyama’s work on the Dragon Quest series is a huge reason as to why I love that series so much. The character and monster designs are so timeless and iconic, while being so unbelievably charming.
Something as simple as the Slime is filled with so much character, and the design for DQ4 protagonist is one of the best ever.

Regarding Toriyama, in a strange twist of fate, I began reading the DB/Z manga not long before he passed, and finished them only a few months ago. Always preferred reading to watching when it came to manga vs. anime. It was campy as hell and a little unintentionally silly in places, but it's so easy to see where the contributions were to the broader landscape of the medium. He did great work.

It's not "Scavenger's Reign" (the reign of scavengers [a noun phrase, describing the reign]), it's "Scavengers Reign" (a _statement,_ of the scavengers, scavengers be reigning). A difference I thought was very profound. Though I was baked off my head when I noticed that so maybe it's not all that profound.

My exposure to Toriyama was his work for Dragon Quest, and especially love his monster designs. There's a ton of character to them, from the cute slimes and sanguinis to the iconic golem and mechs. It's safe to say that the series as it is would not exist without him. I still haven't played Dragon Quest Monsters 3, but knowing it might have been the last Dragon Quest he worked on feels bittersweet. A lot of the art he's done for DQM, featuring groups of lots of monsters together are so wonderful and lively. Really demonstrates his talent as an artist, both with monster design and composition.
I also own an unreasonable amount of slime plushies, their big smiles always cheer me up and I spent too much time hugging my favorite ones. Thank you for such a perfect friend, Toriyama.

I grew up in the 90's and one of my most vivid memories is waking up for elementary school (primary school for non-Americans) and on some of these early mornings getting to catch glimpses of episodes of Dragon Ball Z episodes as my family got ready for the day. I don't think I ever actually saw an episode but I can absolutely say that is probably the single defining reason I got into anime as a teenager and re-discovered it as an adult post education. As I learned, too late, about Akira Toriyama , and who he was I'm saddened that he passed as early as he did. I hope he is able to find peace.

Sharing my Toriyama inspiration story here as requested.
The Dragon Ball manga changed my life. When you talked about the playfulness of Akira Toryiama's panels, the warmth of his machine designs, the fashion and poses of his characters, I started crying and couldn't stop for several minutes. There are few creators whose deaths have given me this level of grief, but Toriyama's passing was a huge gut punch. It still hurts.
These days, I'm a professional video game artist (specifically UI/UX, but I still draw characters in my free time, and I'll hopefully never ever stop). Toriyama is one of a handful of creators who set me on that path at a young age. Though I would later come to adore his character designs for Chrono Trigger and Dragon Quest, it was Bulma in Dragon Ball who inspired me the most. When I opened Dragon Ball volume 1 at age 14, it was Bulma's vibrant personality, her sense of adventure, her winning combination of smarts and brattiness that hooked me on the series. I was a teenage girl trying to figure out my role in the world, and so was she. Even beyond Bulma, Toriyama had an endless fascination with "girl who tinkers with machines", from Lucca in Chrono Trigger to Ann in Sand Land. Every time I see one of those characters in his work, I smile. They all feel like old friends. I was drawn to my field of work because I love creating art while solving technical design problems. I hope I approach my work in the same way Bulma does hers: innovative and thoughtful, but also decidedly feminine, outspoken, and always uncompromisingly myself.
Rest in peace, Toriyama-sensei. Thank you for all the joy and inspiration you gave so many of us.

I randomly stumbled upon Dragon Half back over a decade ago. It doesn't live rent free in my head, it does pay rent in the one bedroom brain apartment it rents reliably. It's just there. All the time. Every once in a while it goes "You are now thinking about the anime dragon girl from the 90s that wore the super skimpy outfit. You are welcome." And then I once again suspect that it was one of the initial seeds that got me into monster girls.

When I was 13 I was introduced to Dragon Ball Z and it really kickstarted a love of anime that was at times brutal (because it really wasn't a thing back then and certainly not in the podunk nowhere town I grew up) and at times profoundly beautiful in the connections it allowed me to make with other weird and lonely kids who all had this one big thing in common. I remember setting my alarm for midnight to catch reruns if I missed an episode because of school, and drawing Vegeta 24/7 is what got me into art. I recently found a copy of Dragon Ball 1 being given away at the local library so of course I snapped it up and can't wait to read it. Anyway, thanks for all the nostalgia bait! My earliest memory of Dragonball is being a young child absolutely terrified of Majin Buu. Watching this happy monster turn some kids into candy and feeding them to another blind child. Seeing Dabura, who was scary himself, turned into a cookie and completely done away with. The fear and curiosity those moments left me with are what compelled all of my interest in anime and visual art as a whole; Nothing else will ever in my mind compare to the master piece that Toriyama created.

Thank you for the Buu shoutout! My moment of #ScareFactor with Buu was the _very_ first time he actually smiled. Going from his happy fat man's expression to a cartoonishly sadistic smile that dwarfs Dabura's, only to, yeah, turn him into a cookie, and also beat up every other character that could stand a chance to him, and then just regenerating absolutely any damage.
I actually love the blind kid moment despite how messed up it is (the idea that he has no idea what to do if you're not scared to him when he's there, so he just... cures your blindness so you can see him and be scared, only for that not to work either), but find it a great choice that he both eats people more literally than Cell, yet less so because they're turned into candy first.
Not to mention the music. There's so much about the Buu Saga's music that speaks to me.
