When Volvo was really Volvo they made uniquely strong cars, like the 240 that with car would last a very long time. I had two of these many years ago. Fantastic and cheap to repair, on the rare occasions that was necessary. Since they were bought by Ford and then Geely, they make cars that are neither better nor worse than many rivals, cheaper and more expensive. It is Sweden's own business whether they go for this grant of tax-payer money to Geely. I suppose it will be based on a cost benefit analysis and not so much on a loyalty to the Volvo marque as such by now. Norway never made a serious effort to build cars, but they do make very good oil rigs and other ocean going craft, and marine engines. The SEA is not even a big agency in Swedish terms but because of Swedish immigration policy over the last decade, Sweden's economy is growing like crazy because of the increase in Labour these immigrants bring - Sweden is export oriented and both it's exports and domestic consumption surged because of it. 1.2 billion US isn't much in comparison with $22 billion Canadian dollars about $18 billion US is spent on battery plant in Windsor, Ontario, Canada.

Sweden resident here: reason why the SEA is giving $1.2bn is because they can. No, really. The SEA is not even a big agency in Swedish terms but because of Swedish immigration policy over the last decade, Sweden's economy is growing like crazy because of the increase in Labour these immigrants bring - Sweden is export oriented and both it's exports and domestic consumption surged because of it. So now we have massive surpluses that even a smaller agency like SEA has billions looking for a home. Most successful Welfare State ever.
