In February 1984, Nissan and the UK government signed an agreement to build a car plant in the UK. The following month a 799-acre (3.23 km2) greenfield site in Sunderland, Tyne and Wear, was chosen. As an incentive the land was offered to Nissan at agricultural prices; around £1,800 per acre.
Jaguar Land Rover is owned by the Tata Group, an Indian conglomerate. In July 2023, Tata Group announced plans to invest £4 billion to build a gigafactory in the UK. The new gigafactory will supply batteries for all Jaguar Land Rover’s (JLR) future battery electric vehicles.74 Once built, the new gigafactory is due to have an initial capacity of 40GWh. Battery production is due to start in 2026.

When Volvo was really Volvo they made uniquely strong cars, like the 240 that with car would last a very long time. I had two of these many years ago. Fantastic and cheap to repair, on the rare occasions that was necessary.
Since they were bought by Ford and then Geely, they make cars that are neither better nor worse than many rivals, cheaper and more expensive.
It is Sweden's own business whether they go for this grant of tax-payer money to Geely. I suppose it will be based on a cost benefit analysis and not so much on a loyalty to the Volvo marque as such by now.
Norway never made a serious effort to build cars, but they do make very good oil rigs and other ocean going craft, and marine engines. I suppose it depends on how strong the market still is for Sweden and across Europe, and whether this justifies the grant.
Best wishes from George in UK.
PS: Half British and half Norwegian.

A Chinese production equipment supplier has (allegedly) sabotaged Northvolt’s production. Viking, look it up, it will make for a good video.

Let's blame the Chinese whenever a European company is in trouble. It can't be their fault. Must be the Chinese.

Sweden resident here: reason why the SEA is giving $1.2bn is because they can. No, really. The SEA is not even a big agency in Swedish terms but because of Swedish immigration policy over the last decade, Sweden's economy is growing like crazy because of the increase in Labour these immigrants bring - Sweden is export oriented and both it's exports and domestic consumption surged because of it. So now we have massive surpluses that even a smaller agency like SEA has billions looking for a home. Most successful Welfare State ever.

Let them better ask for money to buy themselves back. We used to love Volvo because they were Swedish back in those days, but they've lost themselves.

Always like Volvo but when China acquired them; I will have nothing to do with them. Same when IBM sold their PC Notebook division to Lenovo, a Chinese company.
