  • The Aussie Fisherman Greg, another day at the office. I will be showing how to catch and handle and tie up mudcrabs. In northqueensland.
Make sure you tie your crabpot to a good solid mangrove tree. Because in Northqueensland, where I crab, we get huge tides. The current will wash your crabpot away. Plus, when we get a bad storm, the extra water that runs down the muddy creek will wash the crabpot away as well. Most times, that crabpot turns into a ghost pot and keeps on destroying fish and crabs for years.
Pulling the crabpot in the right way is very important for people who haven't had a lot of experience in handling mudcrabs. Even I do it this way, I find it a lot less trouble, I make sure the crabpot is upside down before I lift it out of the water and into the boat. That saves turning the pot over in the boat. When you turn the crabpot over in the boat, the crabs start biting each other and cause a lot of damage. In some cases, they actually die some of the crabs.
I show how to pick up a mudcrab safely. Just make sure you have a good tight grip.
In Queensland, Australia, it is not legal to take female mudcrabs. So They have to be released immediately back into the water.
Check for size that is another rule in Queensland the mudcrab has to be 150mm across the top of the crab shell.
How to tie mudcrabs up so they don't bite you or each other when you put them into a tub.
How to bait a crabpot with Mullet heads. I like to use mullet heads for bait because they work pretty well and are easy to access from our local buyer (Mackay Reef Supplies)
It is important to look after your mudcrabs in the boat. I place them into a tub with holes in it. Put a hessen bag over the crabs. Too keep the hot sun off the crabs. Plus, I like to put a hessen bag between each layer of crabs to stop the crabs on the bottom, biting the legs of the crabs above them. Every now and then throw a bucket of water over the crabs to keep them cool and alive. They need to be moist all the time, or they may die.

Nice crabs! Do most of your crabs end up in Sydney and Brisbane? I know the pro crabbers in Stanage Bay years ago, would load a heap up and drive into Rockhampton airport and they would end up in Brisbane at Gambaro seafood wholesalers. Cheers

Hi Jason, I used to send my mudcrabs to Sydney fishmarkket. I am selling my product to Mackay seafood supplies now. I used to net fish at Stanage Bay years ago. It was a great place for all seafood. Cheers Greg 😊
