The end was very sudden, but the rest of the book was beautiful…
Thanks for this review, Kieran.
I am not allowed to say something about this book publicly yet, because I'm judging the booktube prize and I had to read it for this round.
Let me just say, that I am wondering, if anyone who praised this book, actually knows someone "on the spectrum" irl.
Will come back to you later again probably. 😉
I did like this book, although I too felt a bit off about the mapping his brain on his mum's, and the dad's reaction to his son's struggling with his mental health. I enjoyed the writing and the relationship and although some of the ideas were heavy handed others I thought worked well.
Also comparing Robin to the mouse in Flowers for Algernon is massive foreshadowing, but I didn't know that before hand I still felt there were references to "when Robbie was" and "before" that I saw the ending coming, but I thought it was gonna be the suicidal cow disease what did it
I was really excited about this for a while....Now not so much! Thanks for being the nail in the coffin.
As a huge fan of "The Overstory" I too was so disappointed. The last 10 pages...UGH.. if this book weren't on my kindle I would have thrown it across the room. Great review Kieran!
Wow. I thought I was going to have the unpopular opinion on this one. But it turns out that you have it and I just agree.
Enjoyed hearing a contrary take on this one. I was getting tempted by the praise from many but then I watched a video with Powers talking about it and kinda got turned off. Primarily by the gee-autistic-people-are-worthy-humans! reveal he apparently experienced in recent years. Just kinda got the idea his ass was showing. (Seemed like a nice enough guy but...)
Yeah I was not a huge fan of it. Idk what happened between Overstory and now but he lost something. I'm curious if it was too much editing maybe, like he cut huge chunks out or something.
If I was rater it would be more a 5/10 for me but I was still disappointed and a little frustrated 😄
This is the only book on the shortlist that’ll piss me off if it wins. I realize it wasn’t written BY a third grader, but I feel as though I’d been talked down by one. 😑
Well I have to read The Overstory now, you and Rachel agree and that's interesting.
I thought Robin was suffering from grief around the lose of his mother and that wasn't discussed as part of his diagnosis... Maybe he was also on the spectrum, but it seemed intentionally overplayed by people in the novel.
What a beautiful start to the video.
I really liked the premise of this one but the more I hear about it the less I want to read it. Yeah I think I won’t bother.
it feels like the end of a booker era 😭
Now we gotta wait until Booker 2022
@@KDbooks international booker is only 5 short months away... 😔

What?!
just finished read this book and I dont like it
Ah thank god I don’t need to attempt this now
Have you read The Overstory!?
I deeply deeply recommend The Overstory
@@KDbooks I started it…
You and I both 😂
Clearly not his best work.
I love it when we agree Victor 😂
@@KDbooks it is so peaceful in the world right now. No more existential crisis until the next one 😂😂
Bewilderment was really bewildering. Moments on my reading I kept asking myself, "why should I care about all of this happening in this family's life?" The only part I enjoyed is the small NASA's Did you know commentary.
Sounds wild lol
the book was a huge disappointment, for me!!!
Yes, so disappointed by this one!!
